- This is the first tie dye I've done in at least 6 months and the first video since my "Status Update" video that was published on 11/11/18.

I love your art and your calm approach. I did check back to your "status " video. I'm so sorry for what you have been through. I want to toss out my neuro diagnosis, because it can show all of your symptoms and be tough to diagnose. It took me 8 years and 8 neurologists. Just make sure your neuro has considered Multiple Sclerosis. The CT will usually miss it and it takes a specialized MRI. Any way, good luck to you. All of us enjoy your art. I have many old videos to go through, as I am a new subscriber.
I have done so many tie dye shirts with just tulip brand dyes but the powder is so much brighter. This is a beautiful design and those colors. I am in ❤️. This is absolutely gorgeous!

The back of the shirt is identical to the front in almost all the designs. But, starting with the videos from March-ish 2020, I've been trying to show both sides during the "final thoughts" part of the videos.

Awesome shirt! I wish I could buy procion dyes as cheaply, that would be at least $20 worth of dye in Canada! 8oz containers are about $30, 1 pounds aren't much of a savings. Great job👍
I don't use anywhere near the amount of dye that most people think I used in the videos. The spoon I use on the videos is an old baby food spoon that holds about 1/4 teaspoon. While I don't monitor my dye usage on a per shirt basis, I do quarterly for inventory management and it comes out to less than 50 cents of dye, on average per shirt.
While I do buy most colors in 1 to 5 pound jars, the 8oz rate for most of the colors I use is about $12/jar and there is minimal savings when buying in 1 pound increments versus 8oz. So, you should only be looking at $1.00 to $1.50 in dye cost per shirt while ice dyeing based on the pricing you referenced.

I'm wanting to tie dye more and i love your videos for inspiration. I really want to try ice dye, but I feel like I very quickly use my 2oz containers up. I was thinking of either buy 8oz jars for secondary and 1lb jars for primary. Or 1 lb jars for secondary and 5 lbs jars for primary. Which do you think is best?
I buy the colors I use the most in 1-5 pound jars. Then, I refill the 8oz jars with the bulk containers when I start running low. It's easier to work with/move 8oz jars when I'm laying out the colors.
What are you using to tie with and why that instead of rubber bands?
Could you please do a video on how you get your final pic to come out so awesome. I am assuming you use photo shop or something and I need help with the pics.
I'm a commercial photographer that specializes in e-commerce/product photography. So, white-background, accurate renditions of items is my day-to-day work.
The colors in my images are accurate - I've had several people comment on their Etsy purchases that the actual shirts they receive are even brighter/more saturated than my images show. So, my first suggestion is to NOT use the saturation adjustments or anything else in PhotoShop to "fudge" reality like I've seen many, many others do on FB posts and Etsy listings. :)
As far as the photography of the shirts goes: I use 2x 800w Alien Bee strobes with large soft boxes attached and a wireless sync to my DSLR. The shirt is placed on the floor which is painted solid white with a semi-gloss paint and the light is further softened by bouncing both strobes off the studio ceiling at 45° to the shirt. I typically shoot the shirts on manual at ISO 200, f/8, 1/160 with a Canon 28-70mm f/2.8 L lens. With proper lighting and the solid white background, very little post-processing is needed other than a basic white level adjustment to match the 5000 Kelvin lighting and slight levels adjustments.
Shirts and a few other large items are the only things I photograph on the floor -- everything else is photographed either in a typical studio setting with a white vinyl background using 3-4 strobes (left, right, background wash, and highlight) or on a light table that I custom built for the studio that allows me to have true solid white backgrounds in-studio with little-to-no photoshop needed during post-processing.

I added a ceiling mount shortly after this video was recorded and the videos since that point have had a nice, clear, top view -- except for the occasions where my head bobs up too far.

I notice that you don't add additional soda ash on top like many others do. How do you think this effects the dyeing?
It depends on the shirt, how much water/ice I used with the dye, and the temperature. The lower the temp and the more ice/water used, the greater the chance I'll add extra soda ash.
I found this really interesting. Do you dry it after soaking in soda ash, before dyeing? What type of pen do you use for marking?

I had a question I hoped you would answer. In a couple of your ice tie dye videos, I’ve seen you apply dry soda ash while you were applying the dye. What effect does applying soda ash with the dye have? What does it end up having on the end product? Thanks for any help.
I usually only add powdered soda ash if I think I've added too much liquid to the shirt. They more liquid you add, the less soda ash remains in the shirt, and the less saturation you'll end up with due to less dye bonding to the fabric. So, if I think I've "crossed the threshold" with too much liquid, I'll add some powdered soda ash to the top to let it wick into the fabric.
@@CasualCollisions another words if you don't get enough soda ash into the fabric, the dye won't really get its hooks into the fabric and it will rinse out. If there is too much wayer, itsx hard for the soda ash to hook into the fabric first, the dye won't be Able to hang onto the ash, so it rinses out. No soda ash equals watery washed out color, it rinses out, pale pale washed out pastel color.

Could you maybe try the dying a sweat shirt of hoodie?
It's on the list for 2019. I had been trying to find a source for 100% cotton hoodies; but, that's not panning out at a reasonable cost. So, I'm going with a 90/10 and plan to heat it to help boost the dyes.
You can use a crochet hook to sneak the escaped folds under the sinew

I live in FLA lol wow I could have the ice melt quickly..stick it outside or turn off my air conditioner..I so want to tye dye..how much are the big container of dye? Do they come in brown tones? Have you ever done jungle animals or bamboo design? Love your channel.subscibed
If I were to turn off our a/c, we would die... And, this design was made in December; so, it was around 68 in the house at the time.

Tell me, have you ever consider using colors like Magenta, Pink, Cyan, or Lime Green in you the dye projects?

There's no "magenta"; but, several things that are in the family, six variations that include the term "pink", no cyan, and at least four variations that are within the "lime green" color scheme.
I've routinely used "Bright Green", various dyes similar to magenta, pink on occasion, and a couple of colors that are similar to cyan. All in one project? Probably - I'm pretty sure the 1,000 sub special included almost everything I had.

Yes, you could. Just be sure you completely wash out the bleach.

Really beautiful! I loved the result! But that was a ton of dye! When I get my dyes from Dharma, I can definately not try to recreate it (not that I would copy you anyway). I ordered for 113 dollar, but have to pay around 250 dollars (dyes + shipping, VAT and customs fees). And the crazy high 250 dollars was cheaper than to buy from some place in Europe. So I must use my dyes sparingly. Or well, but I can't just dump them on there. In my country, dyes are found only at 1 place, and they only have those 19-grams boxes for 79,- Norwegian Crowns, which is 9 dollars. So for 8oz, it will be 107 dollars. I just mention, in case somebody say to buy local. Which clearly is not an option in this country.
I have not yet tried ice or snow dyeing. I was going to, and went outside to get some snow. But hey, it was all frozen rock hard. So I had to come up with something else. I could do it today, but have no more T-shirts.
I have some more dye left, strange enough, since my boxes were only 10-grams each. But it did last for quite many T-shirts. I made only low-immersion. The dyes were very strong, bought from Colourcraft in the UK. I just hope the Dharma dyes are as strong. But I'm a bit sceptic, since I see you Americans dump on loads of dye powder. We'll see when I get my shipment from Dharma, if they are weaker than Colourcraft's, I will let them know.
Yes, I forgot! If you want really, really vibrant colors, you should try viscose or rayon. I dyed three T-shirts made of 95% bamboo viscose and 5% spandex. It was a WOW moment when I washed the dye out, compared to cotton. The colors were stronger, more saturated and more bright and vibrant. So viscose/rayon is a very good one (but beware, it has lower wet strength, which means you must handle it more delicately when wet (because it can tear easily). Cotton has a high wet strength, so it can handle rough treatment). Mercerized cotton is another option, which will dye stronger than untreated cotton. I have not tried that, yet.
The international shipping/VAT fees are likely quite high in many countries if ordered from a US distributer. I've heard of $300+ shipping charges for shipments to Australia; but, like with you, it was still less expensive for them than to purchase locally. You might want to check with Custom Colors on what their/his international shipping would be to you. He uses Procion Dyes to create his own colors and I've heard only positive things about Custom Colors dyes and his shipping rates are typically much less than Dharma within the US. I, personally, haven't ordered from him in the past because his website doesn't offer online ordering. But, I do plan to place a small order with him this year to see if it's worth making the switch.
I buy most of the Procion dyes by the pound (450 grams) for anywhere from $12 to $28 per pound (depending on the color) and my overall cost for a Gildan G200 shirt and average dye usage combined is about $2.50/shirt - even with the popular opinion of my "heaping on the dye" ;) Bamboo shirts around here are substantially more expensive than cotton and I've cut through entire sections of the shirt while pulling the sinew tight when working with rayon and bamboo in the past. So, cotton is the best option for me with the way I work while tying.

The shipping is cheaper than Dharma, I discovered now when making a test order. Not extremely cheaper, but quite a bit. I will order from them the next time.
Yes, bamboo shirts are also very expensive here. I got a few very cheap from where I work, and have tried to find more, but the prices were crazy! So I will use cotton too. I bought 10 t-shirts in size XXL from an online outlet store, for $1.17 each. I should have bought more, but the size were too big. I guess that's why they were such a bargain. But it is just to have something to start with. I have to order t-shirts from the UK or somewhere else in Europe. The prices here are too high, unfortunately. Shipping from the UK is very cheap, but the problem is customs fees and norwegian VAT, which easily almost doubles the prices if the shops don't take away the UK VAT first. Luckily, many UK shops do that when they export out of the European Union.
Luckily I can get sinew easily from Sweden for next to nothing in shipping. I ordered 150 meter, and it was superb! That sinew came from America, actually. So it said on the parcel: "Country of origin: United States". The sinew is flat and very sticky. I'm afraid all that wax will mark the t-shirts. But since all you americans use it all the time, I'm sure it is just fine.
The biggest problem is our front loading washing machines, all of them ECO and AAA-something energy marked. Which means they use very little water and rinse only once, plus use way too long time for anything else than the quick program. I can dump in more water thru the detergent drawer, but it will only take so and so much before it starts to flush it out again. I really hate the energy marked ECO washing machines. In this country, where water flows everywhere, in abundance, it is not at all ECO. But I understand why such machines is important in for example Germany. But here, no. And it rinses so bad, that a regular full load of clothes is still slightly warm when you take them out. So I have to manually add another rinse program. And you can not open the door immediately. There is this stupid safety thing, so after the machine is finished, or if you stop it, the door can not be opened until so and so many minutes. Totally stupid, since the machine is turned off and can't suddenly start to spin you hands or something. That is very annoying. We actually don't have regular sized top loaders at all. Only vintage ones from the 50's. So I have to wash most of the dye out by hand, before dumping it in the washing machine, and then use the shower to force more water into it. Perhaps it is easier to go back to the 1800's and wash clothes by the river. I will actually try just that. I have the ancient hand cranked rollers they used before the centrifuge was invented. I also have the wooden boards they used to wash clothes. And I have made handmade soap. So why not? Maybe it is very efficient to wash out dye by the riverside. What I definately will try, is to make a sort of cage that I can place in a shallow river, for example with a big plastic box with holes, and then just dump the t-shirts in there and let them soak in running water for a day or two or three. Just to see how much dye the river actually can rinse out without me doing nothing. I guess I will find out just how much dye that have been washed out when I take them inside for a hot rinse with detergent. Anyway, I can't experiment with that until spring. Now everything is frozen.
To add to what others have said about Custom Colours... Dave sells them on Paypal as well. ebay.to/2QwcVbh Not sure how the VAT and all works, but I think there are some lower cost options of shipping. They are VERY STRONG colors...His directions say ratio of powder to cup of water: Pale Shades 1/2 tsp. Medium 2 tsp Dark Shades 4 tsp Black 4-8 tsp. Comparable to Dharma, EXCEPT on pale shades... For example, Baby Blue at Dharma says 2 tsp. So on paler shades, I think the dye is much less expensive for the similar colors at Dharma. Suggest doing a test run before using them on a garment, but they appear to be excellent dyes... very well powdered and appear to be very bright and strong. The colors are fantastic and some of them are different tones than Dharma dyes, so I got some to round out my colors.

how/what do you wash your shirts with?
Cold water rinse-out. Wash in warm water with an extra rinse and whatever detergent I happen to have at the time. Dry on normal settings. And, then I wash the shirts with everything else after that.
We are an "everything can be washed together" house. So, tie dye mixed with white towels is completely normal for us. I've never had any of the dyes bleed onto any other items in the wash.
Can I ask? Why do you leave those large loops of sinew hanging out like that? Does it help you? Thanks!
They're there to start to give extra slack in case the next section pulls free and I don't remove them because it increases the chance of one of the sections of sinew loosening during the process if I drop it at some point.
