    After the 48hr soak do you do wash on HOT, WARM or COLD? Getting fading on color after 1st wash 😩

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 года назад +1

      After batching for 48 hours with heat, I rinse in the sink to start with in cold water, this rinses away the soda ash which is what activates the dyes ... then I un band and rinse in warm water till it runs semi clear, then I wash in hot water three times to wash away all of the un bonded dyes... the first cycle is a quick cycle with lots of synthrapol soap ( some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral) ... the next two cycles are longer soak cycles to help remove the last of the un bonded dyes.
      SO, if you are having lots of fading after the first wash, then you have some issues other than washing that need to be adjusted ..... First, what kind of dyes do you use?? I use Procion Dyes .... if you are using a store bought kits like Tulip, then that could be part of your issue.... if this is the case, there are a couple things you can do, first is to still do a soda ash soak on your tees/hoodies ... then I would tie everything up and have them ready to dye... THEN, I would mix the dyes... with Tulip brand dyes, they are active as soon as you add water.... so if you mix them and leave them to sit for a couple hours while you tie things, then the dyes are weak when you apply them.... so tie, then mix dyes and then use right away .....
      heat is another thing, the temp needs to be at least 70F for the dyes to set up properly, bt I like to add heat, I batch mine in tubs with lids so the dyes stay wet while I batch, then I set the tubs in the sun to warm up... this will help speed the dye bonding process, which will give you better colors
      Another thing to check is the cotton content... a lot of hoodies are a 50/50 blend of cotton/poly. and poly does not take these dyes.... so if you have a 50/5- blend hoodie, then only half of the fibers will take the dye and this will give you a faded looking hoodie... I use Hanes Ultimate Cotton Hoodies, they are 90/10 and dye up great .... I buy mine wholesale from sanmar.com, but many dyers buy from jiffyshirts.com
      So with all of that said, here is my Beginner's Playlist which has a few videos that could be helpful to Improve your Colors : ruclips.net/p/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo
      and just in case you need it, here are places to buy Procion Dyes in the US :
      CA : Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html
      CO : Grateful Dyes : www.grateful-dyes.com/
      NC : Custom Colors Inc. : www.customcoloursinc.com/
      MA : Pro-Chemical and Dye : prochemicalanddye.net/
      MO : Dyespin : www.dyespin.com
      I hope this helps

    I like both of these. But I have a question. What would you use as a dye fixative for the Dharma dyes? I did buy some Rit color fixative as I’d like to do something for the black cotton knit pants I buy that lose so much color with washing. For the new ones and the ones I plan to re-dye black.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 года назад +1

      I use fiber reactive Procion dyes and they are activated with the soda ash, so I pre soak my tees or hoodies in soda ash and then when I add the dye, they become active and start bonding with the cotton... I leave them to batch for 24- 48 hours and this is when they dyes set up... they need to stay wet so i put them in a tub with a lid and they need to be at least 70F .... so I stack mine next to a heater vent or out in the sun
      here is my beginner's playlist to show how I mix the dyes, the soda ash and how I batch and then the wash out process as well as a couple videos where I talk about the basics as I tie up and dye a tee .... ruclips.net/p/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo
      I have not used Rit dyes, but I have seen results from many people that were not good compared to procion dyes

    how to keep the white area without replacing dyes? please answer

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 года назад +1

      To avoid back staining in the washer, I batch the item for longer
      (I leave mine for 48 hours) so most of the dye is spent by the time I rinse and wash.
      Also, I use Synthrapol soap during my hot washes, it is pH neutral and it helps to hold the dye particles suspended in the water during the washing
      And I add plain water or thickened water to the white areas to help hold space when i am doing liquid dyeing
      it is not an issue when I use foam brushes like i did in this video.

      after I dye an item, I put it in a tub with a lid to batch, the Procion dyes need to stay wet in order to bond with the cotton, and they need to sit for a minimum of 24 hours for the dyes to set up for decent colors, I prefer to leave mine for 48 hours to give the dye more time to set up ... then I rinse in the sink and wash in hot water with synthrapol soap ... here is my beginner's playlist with video to show this .... ruclips.net/p/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 года назад

      Part of that comes from using Synthrapol soap in my washer during wash out... it is a pH neutral soap that helps keep the dye particles suspended in the water .... BUT, one other thing that I feel helps is a longer batch time with added heat (I batch my tees in tubs with lids and I will set them out in the sun or stack next to a heater vent) .... this helps more dye bond with the cotton.... BUT, it also will help 'exhaust' the dyes.... so there is less of a chance of them back staining
      oh and some dyers use Blue Dawn Dish soap or Folex Carpet cleaner in place of Synthrapol soap as they are all pH neutral ... I hope this helps keep your white area white during washout

      Soda Ash is what activates the fiber reactive Procion dyes I use, so soda ash must be used at some point before you batch them (let the dyes set up) ... most ties I pre soak my tees, but sometimes I will just get them wet with plain water as it makes tying easier, and then soak it in soda ash an then spin out the excess ... and one last way it to tie it, dye it, and then squirt soda ash on and then batch it

    I love this one! Looks great.
    One thing I was wondering when squeezing dry a soda ashed shirt today was, have you ever considered using a mop wringer (like custodians use) to make the process easier/more efficient? When I'm doing a bunch of garments at a time I think it'd be nice to have some mechanical advantage on my side, and I considered picking one up. Could you see any potential downside to this?

      yes I have seen many other dyers use them to help with the wringing process.... I happen to have space outside for two dedicated soda ash washers ... so I put my tees into the washer and then I turn on spin cycle in the other machine to fill the 2nd washer up with soda ash... I soak 20 minutes and then spin it back into the 1st washer... but I do a lot of tees when i am working with a school

      I use Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes. I buy most of mine from Dharma Trading Co. www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-fiber-reactive-procion-dyes.html
      I have also purchased the same kind of dyes from Custom Colours in NC and Grateful Dye in CO
      Here is a video on how to mix the dyes: ruclips.net/video/3Fj289T6BVg/видео.html

      I buy mine wholesale from sanmar.com .... but I know a lot of other dyers buy from jiffyshirts.com ... I use the Hanes Ultimate Cotton hoodies, they are 90/10 ... and I have also purchased direct from Hanes.com in the past

      I buy my hoodies and tee wholesale from sanmar.com ... but I know a lot of dyers buy from Jiffyshirts.com as you do not need a business license for them.
      tapestry blanks I purchase from sunshine joy ... www.sunshinejoy.com/Tapestries-Hippie-Wall-Hangings/blank-white-tapestries-prepared-for-dyeing
