Tie Dye: Alien Spine [Ice Dye]

  • This one ended up turning out so much cooler than I expected. The incline with the pattern created a 3D-effect to the final shirt that makes it look like a spinal exoskeleton of an alien.

      Overall, health wise, my speech speed is normal though I still have issues with word selection hundreds of times a day. Most of the videos have at least a few retakes because of 5-10 second gaps of *nothing* happening as my brain just goes into "pause" mode as I'm unable to come up with the word(s) to use.
      I do feel I'm currently in a "good space" with the tie dye designs and I'm happily churning along making 3-6 videos a week to stockpile for slow weekly releases due to an upcoming "time out" I'll be forced to deal with. More details on that will be in a "channel update" in the next month or so. Until then - gotta keep making videos on new ideas, designs, and experiments. :)

    I really like the look of this one a lot! I can't quite see what you mean about a 3D effect, but that might be because of it being on a computer screen. I totally see the exoskeleton though and I love the feathery meltiness of it. Moving forward with it, I'd like to see how it would look with one more color in it, starting with a vibrant violet family color at the center/as the 'spine,' just not as wide as the current blue one is. Then just continuing with the colors the way they are. Btw, I love your videos and now I think I've watched them all.....so make more! I have learned a ton from you, thanks!

      If I would have known it was going to turn out like this, I would have likely chosen different and darker colors; but, the results on this one surprised me. Completely unexpected that this would results.
      I try to release a new video every week and I currently have 23 videos (and 3 "spares") batched up, so there should be a new tie dye video from me every Saturday through the end of this year.

    @johncspine2787 4 года назад

    Yes, it’s very cool. Literally, in terms of color selection..I am a big fan of blues and greens, especially the electric ones, the space ones, all. (My first spiral I got an electric green aura near a purple, who knows what I did to make it happen..) As a beginner I’m struggling with my color selections and placement..I’m learning that a great fold can be well, not ruined, but if you place the colors too..busily, it can detract from all the work you did folding and the intended pattern created by the fold. Here, your color selection and placement and method all came together to enhance each other. I’m betting most beginners like me look at their pile of colors and feel compelled to “add just another touch of..X” until the browns start happening!

    • @johncspine2787
      @johncspine2787 4 года назад

      Ugh..what did I just say? Did three shirts..spiral, ok, geodes, marginal, and thought “I can whip out this design!”..it looks like..a piece of hard striped candy that got stuck in the machine..I’m thinking of either bleaching as an experiment or putting it in the muck of my next batch. Worse..colors..selected..ever..! Mine, I mean..

      I've made quite a few of these and the results are reproducible. There is some variation of the spine with some shirts - since the "spikes" are dependent on the melt of the ice on the incline; but, overall, the design is the same.

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 года назад +2

      Thanks. Some people swear by bone-dry shirts, others only fold with wet shirts. When I started, I tried doing what everyone said was correct: dry shirts, dye over ice for ice dyeing, batching the shirts in a bag, rinsing until the water is clear, using dawn soap, etc. It's endless. I fold and dye with the material damp, usually place ice over dye (though I will do the opposite for specific effects), never bag anything, rinse for 2-4 minutes *max*, don't use any special soap, etc.
      I do what works for me - be it what's easier, what results in the "look" I prefer, etc. The more people experiment with what works best for them, the more options everyone else can enjoy when something really creative springs up from those experiments.

    • @CasualCollisions

      You can; but, it will just dilute the liquid dye and result in a more pastel final color. You could mix the liquid dyes up with less water to form a concentrated liquid and use a steeper angle. That would probably turn out quite interesting.

      The fold isn't an incline - the rack the fabric is on while being dyed is physically on an incline of 45° (or greater) so that when the ice melts, the dye flows at an angle into the shirt.

    Ever tried freezing some water in an ice tray, add some dye powder, water, freeze, add different, freeze, for multiple layers of dye?

      I have a dozen or so freezing/frozen experiments on the "to do" list. It'll likely be winter before I have a chance.

      Probably more trouble than it’s worth, but maybe might produce an interesting effect or two. If I can find an old ice tray, I’ll try..

    With the 'one sided' is just the pattern itself a one sided situation or what should you look for when knowing not to flip and add more ice/dye?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 года назад +1

      If the dye pattern is complex - such as the sawtooth videos I'm beginning to post - I only do a single-sided dye with an extra soda ash application and ice application. The results will already be complex and richly saturated, so there's no need to flip and dye on the opposite side.
      I also mostly do single-sided dyes with inclines. This is more due to how much dye remains on the metal racks I use that would need to be cleaned/replaced before flipping the material. Again, since the results are generally more complex due to the incline, there's not really a need to flip the material over. With that said - I will be posting a video showing alternatives to that sometime within the next few months.

    When you were talking about using daffodil over yellow you said that one of them would split? What does that mean?

    • @johncspine2787
      @johncspine2787 4 года назад +1

      When ice dyeing the colors that are mixes of other colors separate into their constituents and those blend with others creating effects not possible w liquid dyes. Some yellows are primaries with no additions. Do an ice dye color test of all your colors..you’ll see which ones split, what their auras look like..

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 года назад +2

      What John Cspine said. There are 22 Procion "primary" dyes. From those primary dyes, the distributers (Dharma, Custom Colours, Grateful Dyes, etc.) create their own additional custom dyes. Some are the same or very similar between distributers, others are radically different.
      The primary dyes do not split since they contain a single color dye - such as Lemon Yellow, Turquoise, and Fuchsia Red from Dharma. But, other colors that are created from the 22 Procion primary dyes will split into their corresponding components when ice dyed. Some colors contain a very large number of primary dyes. That's why colors like Better Black will split into greens, yellow, blues, violets, etc. when ice dyed.

    Very nice! I like the color gradient you got. Why did you put the dye on top of the ice instead of under? Does the color break more?

    • @CasualCollisions
      @CasualCollisions  4 года назад +1

      Yes, it will have a more smooth color transition that shows less "splitting" and a more organic/smooth result if you place the dye on top of the ice. That's not a method I generally use because I care more about dye placement in most designs; but, for an incline, dye on top of the ice usually has a more pleasing result.

    • @QueenBDesigns

      Are you remembering to pull the sleeves in? So like it's not just a fold in half, you fold in half the wrong way so the sleeves are in the center of the shirt. Then you pull the bottom sleeve even with the top sleeve. Then you reset it to look like you only folded it in half. He kind of explains that in the start of the video. He mentions he's got a video that will teach that technique.

      I mostly use Gildan G200 shirts because of how well the dye bonds with the fibers, allowing super-saturated colors. But, they're not soft and some people do not like the fit.
      I use Anvil 980 shirts when I want a "soft" shirt. They don't have the saturation that the Gildan G200 shirts do; but, they're very comfortable, soft shirts.
