"I'm burning up a sun just to say goodbye."
Love that line.
The most romantic thing I've ever heard
That how much loved her
Just to clarify incase anyone thinks this. The Doctor didn't burn up the sun himself. He found a supernova in history and siphoned the power from it. He's not a psychopath who absorbs suns, potentially dooming millions of nearby ecosystems.
I love the sound the tardis is making
"And I suppose if it's my last chance to say it...Rose Tyler" will ALWAYS make me cry😭
THE FIRST THING THE DOCTOR TOOK ROSE TO WAS TO SEE THE SUN BURN OUT
THEY SAID GOODBYE BY A BURNING SUN
why must you hurt me in this way?

This is the first time i actually cried just watching a TV screen
same.. same.
You should see Donna or Amy's goodbye scene
Welcome to the club.
Yeah, same here. I was actually in front of the tv on the floor sobbing.
Me too.
Billie piper's performance in this scene was outstanding.
There needs to be a word to replace "outstanding" I had no respect for her the first time I saw her. So much for intuition and first impressions. This was, by far the greatest scene in cinematic history. Perhaps because of their real life connection and our own life experiences. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
IKR! I miss her so much😭😭. Doctor Who isn't the same without Rose Tyler. 😭💔

OH MY GOD TENNANT THATS NOT COOL
it wasnt his fault. he only had a short time to be there.
or maybe he closed the rift because he could not say it, like in satan pit, where he cant say it, whatever it may be. he did not say anything, cuz he thought it would hurt to much. again just a theory of mine

It’s funny how when the doctor says, “both universes would collapse,” and Rose says, “so?” you can tell she actually means it. She’s not joking.
Love it how Matt smith just appears at the end lol
Makes you feel a little better lightens the mood
sproutickler That’s what I thought.
I thought you were talking about Donna 😂
What do you mean?
😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Rose: am I ever gonna see you again?
Doctor: you can't
Producers, thinking about series 4: who's gonna tell them?
producers: no let them cry haha

ponytailsforlunch LOL!😂
Producers: *evil smile* lets break their hearts....then mend them.. *slowing morphing into Davros voice* ...then break them all over again and again and again!! *evil laugh*
Roro Halstead Producers: Their fears and compassion will be their greatest weakness. (Sinister chuckle) Then when they think the Doctor wins and everybody lives! We tear out both of his hearts, and theirs too.( Malevolent Laughter )
The way Rose says 'I love you' breaks my heart every time.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that Billie Piper was so distraught after filming this scene that she had to go to her trailer and it took nearly an hour before she could get herself under control. She had channeled so much emotion into this scene and submerged herself so completely into the character of Rose she had difficulty turning it off when the director yelled cut.
It Shows That A Long Time Friend WILL NEVER FORGET and Always Love The Other
@@chooseyourpoison5105 oh my God 😢, I mean props to her she did a magnificent job, I always loose it when she says I love you to him I just start badly tearing up 😭

"Quite right too" is up there with "I know" as the best replies to "I love you"
and HE NEVER GOT TO SAY IT BACK
Idk if it's just me, but saying "I know" or any iteration of that to "I love you" feels kind of arrogant in a way. I know it's not meant like that, but still.
@@Dead25m I think it was even more heartbreaking bc Doctor was an alien, I not sure if he could feel something, idk.
@@eurobertoaraujo I reckon he could definitely feel it for her but knew he couldn’t say it back. There’s no future for him and her; even if she could come back he’ll still outlive her and it probably hurt too much
So I just noticed this the other day. At the end of the Madame Du Pompadour episode, the other guy says "quite right", when Tenant refuses to share the contents of the letter. And in this scene, Tenant says "quite right to". And I always thought that response was odd. And now I'm wondering if that's a direct call back. Might be a reach. But considering all the other callbacks maybe not?
What makes this duo so unbearably painful is how well their end reflects and depicts a break up in real life. Suddenly separated into two different worlds, you know that the other person is out there living their life only you cannot be together for whatever reason and you feel changed forever. Rose explains how the doctor has shown her a new way of life and she cannot simply return to how she was before after all their amazing experiences.
Frick, this is the best comment on here
on the plus side at least she got to be with her father again even if he was an alternate universe version plus her whole family are in a better world now anyway

@@bee8425 Actually she was talking about the series 4 version.
As a child I got emotional at this farewell. For me Rose will always Be my favourite dr who companion.
@lukedaley17 That's why I find it pretty stomach churning. The overemotional, oversexualised, over-whiny Ten is why I stopped watching. The trouble with modern drama (& I quote RTD in his first Dr Who Magazine here ) ''Is that it has to make you care all the time''. That's a way of storytelling I find manipulative & dishonest, it also invalidates the show when it's trying to make a serious point/comment/observation. I'm watching a fantasy drama, not a charity appeal, doc, play for today or news item. That doesn't mean Dr Who can't make a point just that it should do so w/o laying it on with such manipulative, dishonest & cheap tactics. TBH I find Ten either too whiny or aggressive to take seriously, there's no middle ground with him.
@@mortdewerewolfe691 damn dude what’s ur take on the current series because 💀
And mine. Always.
The connection lasts 3:38 minutes, or 180+38= 218 seconds.
The time there is used saying "Rose Tyler" (by him) and "I love you" (by her) is about 4 seconds.
218/4= 54,5.
He could have said _"Rose Tyler, I love you."_ 54 times, but they wasted them by talking about the beach and her mother, so he used just the 0,5 to proclaim his love for Rose.
*FIFTY-FOUR TIMES*
***** For a Time Lord, he sure does have poor time management...

Voted #1 greatest moment in sci-fi, horror and fantasy by SFX readers in their 250th issue!
Could you please possibly release the clip of Donnas mind being wiped by the Doctor.
I personally cried a lot more at that sequence and when the Doctor entered the Tardis alone afterwards then I did on this Scene :)
Unconventional Jack u should have voted jack
Haha first comment to say first
Oh please. Considering the majority of Doctor Who fans these days don't want to acknowledge anything outside Tennant's era, it's no surprise this shlock made #1. If you think this is the best moment in Doctor Who history, then you obviously haven't been paying attention.
Rose was a terrible companion. CHARACTER DEVOLOPEMENT RUSSELL T YOU GAVE HER IT AND THEN YOU BROKE IT OMG OMFG
The Doctor just left Rose on read at an interdimensional level
Me as an oblivious 9-year-old watching this: “Why did he just say her name? What was so meaningful about that?”
Crystal that was me when I was like 5. I never used to understand
Exactly, but still cried my heart out, and cried again few years later, and cried some more today

Who invited you here? Do you like making things worse for us, or for yourself?
(screams)
Who let you in here?!
Why must you hurt me in this way
Noah Daglio BURN.
Just in case you were feeling sad:
I just want to point out that in doomsday, (before this scene of course) the Tenth Doctor explained to Jackie Tyler that "every single decision we make creates a parallel existence". So there has to be at least one version where they stayed together, and that brings me joy. Also I want to say that when the doctor was repairing the TARDIS, he mentioned that if the time lords were still alive transferring universes would have been an easy thing to do. Guess what the time lords are still alive. Hope still exists in reuniting these two again. :)
This comment made me so happy :)
I'm on the Season 4 Animated Special right now... The only other (pure) Time Lord is dead. The other part-Time Lords are either in a parallel universe OR given amnesia for protection. But that's all I know now. Please don't post spoilers :D
Nicole Paris thank you for that 😍😍
And then you realize that Billie Piper is legit done with the show. She's not ever coming back to the show.
@@VincentDoesThings sure... that's why she's not in a new audio play featuring her character and starring her as Rose.
When Rose says "I can't think of what to say" is what does it for me. The "I love you" is emotional, yes, but the 1st line is more subtle, realistic and natural. They had all that time together where they said what they wanted, whenever they wanted to each other when they had all the time in the worlds (see what I did there? ;)). Now its their last 2 minutes and they believed they'd never see each other again, the only thing to say is the one thing they never said: how they truly feel. That one line sums i up for me.
agreed!
Definitely. Also Rose's smile after the Doctor says "quite right to" - it's almost like she knows it's a weird thing to say, but it's very him, and she's appreciating every little thing that makes him unique in the little time they have left. Very realistic reaction to me.
For me David Tennant will always be THE DOCTOR ...his acting is a true masterpiece
He appears different. Like the world gave him a few lessons. That happens. I hope he deals with it well. He is one of my very favorite thespians.
This is the saddest moment ever on Doctor Who! 😥😰
Forget that this is the saddest thing in the entire universe
Dante Giello your right, it's not the saddest thing. david tennant's final line as the tenth Doctor is the saddest thing; "i don't want to go."
that is the only line that can bring me to the edge of tears.
Kraai Kyne actually now that I think about it I think i don't want to go and doomsday are tied because seeing rose bawled up and crying is as emotional to me as seeing David say I don't want to go they both literally make tears run down my cheek and I don't really show that much emotions yeah yeah I know what your thinking BLASPHEMY!!!
Dante Giello nah, doctor who and scorpion are the only two shows ever made that can make tears run down my face too. nothing else hits me emotionally as those two shows do.
SP Murphy And what about the episode "Angels in Manhattan" ?
"Rose Tyler..."
"Sherlock is actually a girls name"
They both fail to confess their love.
Yep, I only just found Sherlock this year, just watched the abominable bride. Didn’t think I could get any sadder until I re-watched Doomsday for the 5th time. I swear, why do I torture myself with such sadness?
@@badwolf029 I relate to you😭
Look. At him. So broken inside but laughing, joking, and being strong. Because Rose needs it.
To be honest I like River Song, she was perfect for the Doctor and a great character, but Rose was an amazing, sweet character. The Doctor loved River Song, but he was IN LOVE with Rose Tyler.
Yes. That right there. That is the best way to put it. To explain it. SO many River and Rose fans are at war over this issue, and whilst it pains even me, the most diehard fan of Rose til the bitter end to see River go on about how no one knows the Doctor better than her.... she can't help it. She was in love.... and whilst the Doctor undoubtedly loved her as he is compassionate and kind with EVERYONE he meets.... he was in love with Rose.... she knew him the most... she knew him when he didn't even know himself.
So, this is the reason why I hate River
The Doctor loved River Song, but he was IN LOVE with Clara Oswald.
@@Kiraya No, Clara was more of a bestfriend/daughter figure to him.

Rose is the one he loved the most, but their relationship is impossible.
Clara is, at best, a girlfriend. Both (11 and Clara) didn't say it but thats the way they look at each other.
River Song got lucky. Yes, the Doctor loves and married her. But if Rose is ALSO available, I'm sure he gonna choose Rose.
I watched Sherlock before Doctor Who and I thought nothing could ever be more traumatizing than The Reichenbach Fall.
I was wrong.
That was exactly me! I seriously thought nothing could be worse-very wrong!

Yes!! When I cry when I'm hurt or sad, its NOTHING compared to how I cry every time I see this episode. So, when I watch this, it literally takes all my energy not to start bawling out loud. I feel like my heart breaks a little bit, each time I watch this.....

Rose Tyler, The Bad Wolf, gets the most heartbreaking departure.
Martha walks out the door. No feels.
I thought Martha had a great exit... she took control of her life and walked out of a negative situation. I felt proud of her. I know quite a few people who could learn a lesson from her.
What about Donna? Her exit was heartbreaking as well.
DONNA, AUGUSTA! DONNA!
Seriously though!! same

I loved this video but it was sooo sad I mean Billie Piper put in
a lot of emotion in that scene I remember seeing something
about this video Billie Piper said she wanted it to be like she
was really losing a good friend that's why you gotta love
Billie Piper for playing Rose she's a great actress.
His little nod at 3:02... I mean, this entire scene is acted impeccably by both of them and still shreds my heart into ribbons with its soul-crushing excellence, but something about that nod speaks so many words. That he knows he's going to be on his own, that Rose won't be there, that he knows how much that concept will devastate her, and that she won't be able to give him the forever she promised him... I mean damn. Billie is remarkable in this scene, but I will never stop saying David Tennant is one of the best actors of all time. He doesn't have to say a word to say *EVERYTHING.*
@@jonbaszkiewicz “On your own?” 😞

*MESSAGE NOT DELIVERED*
Ten's "You're not.." could either be him hoping she didn't move on that quickly and have a baby with Mickey, or him fearing it's his because they absolutely had a physical relationship even if it wasn't shown.
Probably moved on
Well she was his girlfriend
I'm definitely of the opinion (and will always be unless one of them actually comes out and says it one day) that they never made it to a physical relationship. I have a laundry list of reasons why I believe that, but one relating to that line would be the fact that I think he'd react a hell of a lot differently if there were any even remote chance that he was finding out she was pregnant with HIS child. I've seen this so many times and I've only ever taken that line and delivery to mean, "Oh my god, you've not only moved on, but you've moved on enough to get yourself pregnant? Bitch, I'm still over here MOURNING your ass!"
"because they absolutely had a physical relationship"
Literally no evidence of this
@@Dead25m Actually, to add to your point, since posting my comment, I have since verified that they did *not* have a physical relationship!
Via ContactMusic in 2005:
“Tennant, who plays the Doctor in the cult BBC show, refuses to allow the writers to introduce anything other than the most innocent romance into the cult series. He says, ‘The story between the Doctor and Rose is basically a love story without the shagging’… ‘It’s still absolutely celibate. I think that's very important.’”
Not that you need more proof, but just to hammer it home… David Tennant at Wizard World 2015, when discussing Tentoo (the Metacrisis tenth Doctor from Journey’s End):
“How galling it is to watch someone who looks like you, who basically *is* you, get to do all the shagging you didn’t get to do.”
As a fanfiction writer who specializes in Ten/Rose “first time fics”, I was over the moon with this validation, hahaha. What’s important to note, however, is that canonically, the Doctor and Rose DO have a physical relationship now. They’re married and in love and have a daughter named Mia Tyler and (I mean we’re all just assuming this bit but) they absolutely fuck all the goddamn time. Amen.
[Source on that last bit: ‘Empire of the Wolf’, ‘Flight Into Hull!’]

Have you ever felt that? When it’s so strong, so hard to say, it just hurts so much to even say it, that you just can’t on the first try?
I have. Props to Billie Piper. She got it across.
So powerful :(
The way Rose says “Am I ever gonna see you again?” absolutely breaks me
There’s such genuine pain and anguish in her voice
And at the end, where you see The Doctor’s mouth open, then close along with his eyes while lowering his head; you can see him pushing down the wave of sadness that almost overwhelms him, the tears still going down his face
10 years and i'm still cry like a baby when i see this. What the hell you did to me BBC?!? :(
I applaud the writers of doctor who, it's so brilliant how you can make your audience feel such sadness when no main character even died! now that's excellent writing, I agree this has to be one of the greatest moment in sci fi film I have ever seen, not because of 10 and Rose's romance, but because of how well the scene was delivered and the thought of leaving your loved ones in a parallel world, man it was mind-boggling to think of!
Never mind "sci fi film" It was the greatest scene in cinematic history and I've been there since 3 channel black and white tv.
“I’m burning up a sun just to say goodbye”

9 and 10 were my favorite doctors. The era with Rose was a part of my childhood, so maybe I'm biased. This scene made me almost die choking on my own tears. I’m now 27 rewatching this, sobbing my little 27 year old heart out.
his true love. the one person to help him feel love again. after a millennia. Someone the doctor can never forget.
wait... the way that she paused as if she was unsure if she was going to tell him about the baby, what if she really was pregnant and just didn't want him to know, Plus the way that he looked at her when she said "-and the baby" that must mean that they...
*creepy laughter that turns into crying*
Help I've been stabbed in the feels :(
Dancing Hufflepuff I thought his reaction was weird too, but I assumed he would have felt hurt if she said she's already with someone else (moving on quite fast). Your theory is interesting.. but nah! I don't think the Doctor would do that with his companions. I mean even falling in love was something he tried to stray from and after failing at it with Rose, he learned from his mistake.
Karrie Dreammind Then again he has had kids before and he’s close enough as a human to compatibly have sex with her, I wouldn’t be too surprised if they did have sex. It would definitely be Rose making the first move, but if she was in a right state of mind I think the Doctor would go along with it. They’ve mentioned physical attraction between them both before, not just romantic.
Get that fanfiction out of here son! This comment section should be a place of mourning!
Jackie says in series 4 she had a baby
I think he was going to say "see you in two years time"
He was gonna say," I love you" I think
(as I cry/laugh/ cough/choke/ convulse/TRY to keep from peeing on myself) I HATE YOU BUT YOU'RE BRILLIANT!! That's one of the FUNNIEST comments I've ever seen, none of your business!
+Lorelei O'Brien phan
1:40 his face is so sad, and it's either because he thinks it's his or that Rose has already moved on, either way his face makes is so damn sad how is Tennant so good at acting
Just to point it out, since I rarely see anyone do it
*Rose*: There's five of us now. Mum, Dad, Mickey... and the baby.
*10*: ...You're not...?
*Rose*: No! It's mum.
Look, just the look of pure terror to relief on his face was enough to show that something more was happening behind the scenes. I don't even know why'd they have that line in there if they weren't "having fun" off-screen, so to speak.
Pretty sure the Doctor WOULD have destroyed 2 universes if he realized he'd never be able to see his kid.
Scary thing is We all know he would.
As "interesting" as that would be, I'm pretty sure he asked as though it was mickey's child before Rose said it was Jackie's.
@@eoingaskin No, the look in his eyes is not the look of a man who thinks his, basically, wife had another man's baby. He thought it was his
How tediously cheap. The Soapy Dr is back, pass the sick bucket.
I recently re-watched series 1-4 (including the specials) and it made me appriciate how good David Tennant was. He always was my favourite Doctor and always will be, but it put in perspective how Doctor Who has changed since not only Matt Smith came along, but Moffat came along. It has changed into something that is for children, with cheesy plot lines and stupid defeats. I understand why people like him and I agree he has written some amazing stories. But all in all I miss T.Davis because in my opinion it was so, so much better.
I agree in 110%.
I agree, Russell was so much better, however Moffat did make some pretty good stories back in day being 'The Empty Child' 2 parter. Now he just takes ideas from other shows and makes them dr who, also Capaldi is so boring!
Thomas Gilbert I agree with everything you said except for Capaldi being boring. He's awesome. His episodes suck, but he's good.
toypuppet I mean yes, sometimes Davies' writing would not be at the best he could do, it was still good and he was good at being a show runner. He would 'hirer' good writers and make sure the stories where good. I think Moffat can be a good writer (like he has shown) but I think he finds it hard to run the show and write. Also, the monsters we get know, big, un-scary robots?! The thing I liked about RTD was that he would make a basic design so scary or creative - Moffat just seems to see how many SFX shots can get in!
Dickson Productions I dunno, Moffat did pretty awesome with the Vashta Nerada and the Weeping Angels (well.. the first time he used them in Blink). That thing in Time Heist was pretty cool, but then again, I thought that entire episode was fantastic.
10 years on and this scene still gets to me 😭
It's not just you. It is the greatest scene in cinematic history. Bar none.
Perfectly written. My favourite scene. Upsets me everytime, even after all these years. That's the Doctor Who writing we need now. Memorable and great acting.
15 years ago today. I remember watching this live. One of the best arcs in new Doctor Who.
I'm here again... breaking my own heart...
Not crying, just a time vortex in your eye.
Lol totally
Damn it I have a TARDIS in my eye.
Damn it I have a TARDIS in my eye.
I went a very long time having never cried at a tv scene. When I first saw this scene, that changed.
0:45 can we talk about her reaction to his smile? Thinking that she’s not gonna see him smiling again hurts her this much 😭 it’s been over a decade and I still cry like a baby every time I watch this episode 💔
I STILL wonder why he will never say those 3 words
"I love you"
He was about to, but the star burnt out.
I think doctor already knew when it's gonna burn. He just didnt find that courage. Cus he likes his proud more than he likes Rose.
wELL IT HITS ME IN THE HEART AND I GET SENSITIVE WHEN I SEE HIM CRY ,w,
Because that would've been a kick in the balls to all of us who hate Rose.
*****
Eh.
Why would they care if we hate her lel
When I first saw this episode my heart broke :( And everytime I remember how great Rose and The Doctor were I feel so sad. I love the Eleventh Doctor, Amy, Rory and the other doctors and companions, but Rose will always be that special person that made the Doctor truly happy
15 years later and still bawling like the child I was
I can never stop crying at this scene absolutely breaks me
