  • Striking your irons better is a great way to lower your scoring.
I met up with PGA Professional Jack Backhouse to find out why we hit fat and thin iron shots and to see how we can get that iron play better.

In addition to shifting my weight more towards my front font, I found at least for me, looking a few inches in front of the ball completely eliminated me hitting behind the ball

1000% it’s exactly what I do whereas I look at the ball with the fairway woods/hybrids etc.
Currently experimenting with how far in front of the ball I should be looking

great idea! Dustin Johnson and a few other PGA/LIV/DP World tour players also do this

Absolutely… people make the mistake of hitting AT the ball…
      Instead of THROUGH the ball.🏌️👍🥃

Good drills there. I've always loved moving the ball 2 inches forward of the normal set up position and making normal swings, gets the low point in front very quickly.

this is actually the best drill! You have to train your brain and body to move the strike forward, not back. (no ball in back of stance!). There is a drill Rory once spoke of hitting any club with a 3-wood ball position.

A divot mat is a great investment. Let’s me practice on days I couldn’t normally practice and make sure I’m hitting the right spot and no bad habits have crept in. Also good to warm up with and take along to the range or sim for when things start to go bad

once i started to shift my weight forward it made a big difference and then hands in front of the ball made it all gel

Love the content Hannah. I’m finding some channels over complicate the topic and take ages to explain things which can be confusing. I really like the way you get straight to the point and clearly explain what you’re covering 👍🏻

I agree completely. It's frustrating to watch some videos spend the majority of the time on intro, telling us what various others do wrong and then 10 percent on what we should do. Makes no sense. Just tell us what to do correctly like done here in a straight forward manner. Also, nice setup questions as well :)

I look at the front of the ball not the back so the back of the ball blurs out. Improves strike immediately.

Great tips here. I had been striking the ball so inconsistently, and after a few of these drills, I am now hitting much better shots!

LOVING these instructional videos from you, Hannah.... but please for the love of God, tell your cameraman to turn the iris down on his camera just a little bit! LOL

Agreed, the content is perfect, but the exposure needs a little tweaking. That harsh midday sun is tricky to get just right. I think a one stop smaller aperture would be pretty close to perfect, turning down the blinding highlights without crushing the shadows in the treeline.

Use a towel 2inches behind the ball and try and miss the towel..less off putting trying to make a downward strike
