  • This video shows our BendPak Inc. lift after it spontaneously dropped, a cable loosened, and one of the posts was bent from the pressure. While our Dad was in the shop he was thankfully about ten feet away and fell down but was not injured directly by the life-threatening failure of this lift. Here are the details:
We are a family owned car dealership in Hammonton, NJ. We have been here for 19 years.
We have had our own vehicle above-ground lifts for the past 10 years.
We decided to add another lift to our 4-bay shop and had the company
Garage Equipment Sales and Service, Inc. out of Glendora NJ install a BendPak 4-post Above Ground HD9XW lift in our shop. This lift is rated for 9000 lbs.
The lift had been installed for twenty days when the following happened:
We were getting ready to shut down for the day and decided we would lower the lift from an elevated state to lower down for the nighttime, while it was holding a 2002 Chevy 2500HD Silverado (weighing under 7000 lbs).
As the five members of us who operate the business have all been operating lifts for the past decade. Our father Avi lowered the lift down to about 2 feet off the ground as we normally do always.
Approx two minutes later Dad came back into the shop to grab a document left behind, and while the shop was nearly pitch dark he was startled by the sudden sound of the lift dropping, causing him to fall to the floor.
Going over to the lift we discovered that one of the corners of the lift had dropping, and the vehicle thankfully was only tilted but hadn't fallen off completely. Obviously had this happened while the lift was still elevated higher it would have been a tragic situation in more ways than one. Extremely life threatening equipment failure.
The following day we reached out to the installing company (Garage Equipment Sales and Service Inc.) , and later on to the manufacturer of the lift (BendPak Inc) both of which are attempting to shake off responsibility of the event and blaming it on user error.
This claim is absurd as one - no one was operating the lift when it dropped. two - Avi and all of us are very well versed with how to safely lower a lift without fault. three - REGARDLESS of anything Bendpak could claim any used would do "wrong" or by "error", a lift holding a vehicle should never EVER simply drop. There are supposedly precautionary safety features on this and every professional lift which are intended to keep this very thing from happening under any circumstances.
BendPak Inc and Garage Equip Sales+Svc ought to be ashamed of their product and service, and we are calling out anyone who is considering purchasing any lift or garage equipment to refrain from doing business with these companies.

The safety features in this lift worked flawlessly. Failure of the operator to ensure the all four uplocks engaged in corresponding slots and depressurizing hydraulics to allow for weight bearing on the uplocks was the cause of this incident. These lifts are not designed for holding load on hydraulics alone. Obviously one corner ulplock was not engaged and began to drop with loss of hydraulics over time. Surprised that after a decade of using lifts, you and your five members have no idea of the importance of this procedure. In future, after lifting vehicle, drop load onto the uplocks, depressurize hydraulics, and using a small shop flashlight, go to each corner and visually inspect that all four uplocks are engaged before working under load. You will have a chance of living a lot longer this way.

Looks like user error to me, so none of the 5 of your are as experienced as you think.. That hoist has a 50 second lift time and then it's your responsibility to drop it down on the dogs and make sure that each and every lock is in place - doesn't matter if you're working under it or parking it for the night - and I'd say that didn't happen. Over my 30 years in the business, I've seen way too many people rely on the hydraulics to hold the vehicle and think that the locks are just a backup - a quick look at the user manual would have prevented this problem...

Kevin Katz though I agree about the lock comment and its clear that it's only partially on the locks here, I do in fact that Bend Pak lifts are basically the top end junk of the lift industry.

  • @Bajalifestyle

cables dont hold up the car in a "non moving state" the safety locks do (the ones that click as you go up). I have never seen a lock fail, but i have seen techs fail to seat the lift on all 4 locks and tilt a lift like that. This one was obviously left hanging by the cable and not the lock.

  • @wazabullfrog
    @wazabullfrog 7 лет назад +10

There is no way this could happen. It's more like someone was putting it down while looking at thier phone. I've been installing and maintaining hoists for 15 years. Poor form calling out the installer and the manufacturer when's it's obviously user error. Even if it was catastrophic cable or hydraulic failure it wouldn't fall that far, only to the next lock. Shame on you and your family business for incorrectly blaming the installer.

this is the result of not lowering the lift onto the locks. the lifting mechanism isn't meant to hold the weight of a vehicle, its meant to lift it, the LOCKS do the holding. use your lift properly and you wouldn't have this issue

The weight of the vehicle shouldn't be resting on the cables. This is tantamount to lifting a vehicle with a jack and complaining when the car falls on you because you failed to used jackstands. I'll be buying one of these anyway for my garage.

Also looks to me like user error ! I had this happen to me when I was learning how to use a commercial lift with a motor home on it. I didn't make sure all locks where above the the set down pins and when I started to lower 2 where and 2 just missed and started doing exactly what you see. Can't blame a company for user ignorance. Just saying that's what it looks like to me. Be safe

  • @jggmoreno7996

Thts not a commercial grade lift brother that's what they called a parking lift for houses or what not. That's a bendpak 9000lbs cap. And yall said it yall self yall were bringing it down before leaving the shop so truck wouldn't be up over night. This is a user error mistake. On bendpak lifts user is required to pay attention when coming down on all 4 corners. If one corner stops from coming down it means lock is still engage user has to go up and press the air valve again to fully open the locks and travel down with out issues.

It looks like the lift has been lowered into the safety latch at drive on side right column.
User must always be watching lift and ensure no safety latch has been caught in ladder. This lift should have been raised first, so the operator was aware of the position of the ladder to safety latch, then lowered. I have seen this happen numerous times with various 4 post lifts from different manufacturers. The lift would only drop in one corner of rope broke, which hasn't happened. If the hydraulic ram piston dropped pressure all four corners would have dropped at same rate, which would have caused hydraulic oil spillage which hasn't happened. A double safety mechanism on each corner would have engaged in ladder if the lift was to suddenly drop. The quick remedy here would have been to raise the lift till level then lower. If I bought a car and drive it into a wall by not driving carefully then it is not the car manufacturer to blame.

I'll add, the cables look way to clean and non lubricated, in fact they look brand new. ? Lifts require periodic inspection and maintenance as outlined in the manuals that the manufacturer supply's or at least mine ( Bend Pak) did. As others have stated if it was on the locks and all was adjusted properly it wouldn't have happened. Another comment is beware of cheaper internet replacement cables

The problem with the lift is There is 4 cables that do all the liftings They need to be adjusted every 6 mounth or so So cables were out of adjustment thats why it cought on the locks Or possable air locks wasnt working properly which caused lift to get stuck The lift operator should always have eye on the lift and watch make sure it goes up and down evenly .

I am not a fan of Brandpak but I know how to use them correctly at least. You don't leave the lift resting on the cables. You have to rest it on the LOCKS. This is clearly spelled out in the owners manual. When you have the lift on the locks there is zero weight being held by the cables. You could cut them with bolt cutters and the lift wont drop. If you guys can't even operate a lift correctly I sure as heck wouldn't trust you to work on my car. And if I did leave my car there chances are it would burn down with your dealership because you don't even have working smoke detectors lol

Well I had a BendPak HD9 in my garage and had nothing but failures of the 110 pump went through two (2) pumps before I finally said no more 110's. Swapped over to the 220 motor and the lift worked fine. Couple of things "critical" you MUST LEVEL all four posts. Residential garages typically have slopes in the concrete floors for drainage flowing to the front. This can and will cause BIG problems if you don't properly shim the posts and level everything. Also, as stated these 4 post lifts can be used without bolting to the floor - but I would NOT recommend that, bolting to the floor is a much better and safer scenario. Most all of the lift companies in the US sell lifts made in China, BendPak is no exception it's a Chinese lift, so be aware. If safety is of no concern to you then install your lift yourself - however, if you care about safety and that of your family members then have a professional install your lift for about $700 it's peace of mind. Make sure you do your research and vett the company you buy from there are a lot of fly by night shit bum Pirates out there - and it sounds like you found one.

Good example of a lift being overloaded. If you are going to lift 4 x 4 trucks, especially diesel trucks you are probably going to exceed the capacity of a 9000 lb lift. Why? Because a 9000 lb lift means 2250 per corner. if you lift a 4 x 4 diesel such as my F250, you have 4800 lbs on the front end. i dont own a shop but i do have a 10,000 lb 2 post in my garage and i have had a few large trucks on mine but they were weighed at the truck stop first. granted a few hundred pounds probably shouldnt make a difference but thats the limitation and for my life Id rater be 300 lbs under that limit that 300 over.

truck is overweight. ..its a 7000lb lift not 9000lbs and plus your locks are not holding up the truck. .
also what are, trying to do,anyway, change the oil...???
and its probably better to disable comments on this video cause clearly you have no idea what you are doing. ..

Lke Mccl *The description states the opposite of it being a 9,000 lb lift with a truck that is under 7,000 lbs.*

i dont think it was overloaded. the problem like he even admits in the description is they had it hanging on the cables. they didnt lower it onto the locks. those are not designed to have weight just hanging on the lift system for longer than it takes to raise or lower it. so as he says the cable 'loosened'......the lift motor decided to stop doing something not in its job description. (if it was overloaded it would have gone to the ground it just dropped onto the lock from what i can see)

@Timmy T I don't think so. The dry weight of a duramax is under 900lbs. That is not a whole lot heavier than a big block gasoline engine. It likely has a 4500lb GAWR but without a plow or winch installed there is not 4500lbs on that front end. No overload, just operator error/in a rush.

Laughing my arse off! This video needs to be shown in high-school auto shop classes to demonstrate what not to do. This is a great example of a bunch of schmendricks and schmucks trying to be mensch. (Avi, do you read Yiddish, you schmendrick).

I guess it really does bend when packed....

    • @walterk1221

It bends when a meathead mis-packs it. In a rush to shut down at close of business for the day a human error occurred and now the responsibility for this error is being denied.

    Looks like an operator error

  • @kevink9106

Yeah, was looking to buy a lift but it probably won’t be a Bentpak. This is not operator error, this is a poor design because it should never happen where a lift drops past the first safety stop.

Go to a Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show and ask about bendpak post car lift failures and lawsuits and you will realize how bad it is. They have the highest return rate by new customers, most sued, have paid tens of millions in lost lawsuits, and 90 percent of the top shops won't use that brand for anything. Welded in china and cheap steel that bends like wire.

I have a similar Bendpak lift that is a 14000 lb piece of crap I have owned it for two year now and I have followed the recommendations of Bendpak according to there operations manual and have two corner posts bend due to locks that did not release properly upon lowering the vehicle the structure of the corner posts are just too weak and even though the rack is under warranty Bendpack will not replace the posts because they say it is operator error. BS read your operation manual BENDPAK . I replaced my Ammco 12000 lb lift which had a lock or two hang up when I was lowering a vehicle and never bent a post. Bendpak lifts in my opinion are not worth the money and they don't stand behind the product. I paid over $7000 for my lift and even the approach ramps are bent due to driving a heavy vehicle up onto the lift. Shame on Bendpak. Again I never bent an approach ramp on the old Ammco lift.

Why is everyone bad mouthing him? He said it was installed only 20 days before this happened. The installer or the equipment is to blame. I was going to purchase this same lift, but I don't want to die .

if you knew anything about this type lift you would know this is user error. It could have been any brand. They failed to use the lock outs.

If it’s a installation problem it would of happen when it was tested not 20 day later and used multiple times

Not buying a bendpak just junk nice crappy locking lader hanging from 1 bolt. Junky design. Dannmar, lift king, backyard buddy, are way better lifts

You must be practicing to be a stand-up-comic because "backyard buddy" danger-devices are NOT ALI CERTIFIED. That is the definition of junk as far as my safety is concerned.
