This is literally my favorite movie. I agree with Nikki that a lot of the great parts of this movie are in the tiny details - one detail about the dad that gets overlooked is that according to logos and equipment we see, he works at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant outside of Denver, which would later go on to be shut down for exposing its workers to harmful levels of radiation; which is a possible explanation for why both his children and his wife developed psychic powers.

the dead boys were showing gwen were they were burried because they knew that she would find them and because they (the dead boys) also knew that finney was going to escape with all the clues they gave him to make it out
Considering the time period I always assumed that the father probably served in Vietnam/Korea and the loud noises trigger his PTSD not that that's an excuse for his actions. This is based off the short story by Joe Hill who is Stephen Kings son and just like his father all his works are tied together in some way or another. I assumed the phone was like the hotel in The Shining. The siblings both have abilities but I think the brother has it lessened and needs a conduit which coincidentally might have some Shining stuff associated with it.
Haha ik this is a late reply but I’m pretty sure it’s cause the dad was hungover from drinking lmao and when your hung over you have pretty big noise and light hypersensitivity
11:06 I love how they portray how you go into "time out' from the fight when you had enough. Gwennie crawled to the bleachers with that other kid. IDK if kids still do that nowadays though.
Criminally underrated movie!! I LOVED the way it was shot and filmed, the kid actors were amazing, Hawke was phenomenal. The premise/story was unique and interesting in a time where it seems like so many movies are the same. You know the acting is good when you find yourself attached to characters like Robin who only had maybe 3 minutes of screen time total. I loved the bittersweet themes of Finn growing up, etc; he matured and found his way, but at the cost of his own innocence and a good friend. I wish Finn could have saved Robin, but I think Robin's death symbolized Finn having to stand up for himself, because no one else can. Very Stephen King-esque, which makes sense because I think his son wrote the story it's based on? Anyway, I loved the vintage 70s feel, and the way they made very bit of it's relatively short runtime count.
Criminally underrated? This movie is garbage imo. Where is the horror element in it? A criminal kidnapping young boys and killing them wow such original story trope. With some old school movie affects thats it? Where is the unique thing about it? Oh thr spirits of the dead are communicate with the main character using the phone as a tool. Seriously anyone who said this movie is great are either has a super bad taste or didnt watch good movies or tv show to know exactly how a great movie should be. I will not give this movie 1/10 at all.
@@Velshin1986 I mean, I certainly won't argue with someone's opinion lol, if you feel that strongly, i'm not entirely sure why you watched a reaction video on it, but I don't think anyone's opinions on any specific movie are wrong. If the movie was garbage to you, then it was garbage to you. And that's fine.
@@Velshin1986 It's interesting you're watching a reaction of a movie you so passionately dislike. I'm assuming you'll never watch their content again right? Since according to your logic they have bad taste.
Who said I watched the reaction I was just curious to see some of the comments who loved the movie. I watch and love the channel contents just not this garbage movie. I am asking you once again tell me where is the horror element? Answer me logically all I saw in that movie (I watchedit during release) a bad B movie Thriller that is all. There is nothing horror about it really. If you guys think this is a horror? Then you need to watch more movies to know exactly what it means for being a horror movie. Try the old school the thing movie or if you want a modern horror movie watch Smile which is fantastic horror mystery movie.
@@Velshin1986 I get that you don't like the movie. But I'm saying why would you continue to watch their content if according to you, they have really bad taste since they like this movie and thought it was good.
The early scenes with the bullying hit hard, because I went through the same as a kid. I didn't have a fighter on my side, so i just took it, for 7 years. I've moved on but on rare moments I still have memories.
Such a great movie. I love that Joe Hill can write a story that's just as good as the ones his dad writes and that this movie adaptation was so good. Granted, Stephen King tends to write five 1000 page novels and a dozen short stories in the same span of time Joe Hill writes a single 500 page novel, but King is horror-story writing machine that never stops and mere mortals can't write like that.
for me personally, the movie adaptation is better - because the book version looks kind of raw and short, like Joe Hill didn't try, there was no psychic sister in the book, there was no tyrant father, there was no Robin and other children, in the book, only Bruce called the phone, and told Finney to fill the phone with earth and fight with the grabber. By the way, in the book, Finney was kidnapped right in front of the store when he and his father were shopping!
Just like Steven explained Finn did not know but he also had abilities whereas his sister had visions but Finn could communicate with the dead. Also, I love the fact that Gwen’s visions did not lead her and the cops straight to Finn. It is almost like Gwen’s visions KNEW he was going to be OKAY and focused mainly on FINDING THE CHILDREN who were unalived by the grabber. This is what I found so fascinating about the movie and when you think about it everyone knows psychic visions may be valid but are not always 100% accurate. That is something you hear commonly because visions always change according to predicaments and situations around the vision. The future is never SET in stone remember? I feel like Gwen wanting to find Finn was focused so much on her because that is her brother however her gift is a gift which is for doing the GREATER GOOD. In this case, it was not about finding Finn it was about leading her to the children that the cops could not solve themselves. This also made enough room for the audience to understand that her vision with this case was to help those parents looking for their kids get CLOSURE they deserved. When you think about it, it really takes a moment for you to be like oh woww. I also feel like they wanted the movie to also have more realistic elements to it because I mean even in real life psychics do exist and vision error is a thing but sometimes it is the best kind of error. If Gwen only found Finn then where would that closure be for the families who wanted to desperately find and know the whereabouts of their children. Lastly, when it comes to the dad, I read that people believed the dad was not abusive just to be abusive but because he wanted to SAVE Gwen from the same fate her mom ended up in. However, I still do not believe in beating kids nor do I believe that he was the best father (alcoholic parents always a no-no) but one may truly speculate MAYBE he was doing the best thing for her which we know that is what HE THOUGHT but Gwen still has a gift regardless and it helped her solve these heinous crimes . Now psychologically I thought about something I have learned in previous psych classes as a psych major. There is something in psychology called reinforcement and punishers. In this case, a PUNISHER is a consequence that makes a behavior less likely in the future. In this case I would apply the theory about the punisher in the fact that the dad beating Gwen and making her say ALOUD that her dreams are just dreams were associated with the pain of the belt and her distress from being beat so everytime she had the dreams she'd be conditioned not to. Nice reaction though guys !
Great points. I def believe in spanking it worked with my bad behind as a kid but this was pure abuse because it was rooted in anger and drunkeness not discipline but I also believe dad needed help. You can tell he loved his kids but likely suffered from depression and addiction after his wife's suicide. Like im curious how he was before that happened. Not excusing bad parenting or abuse but I like to understand the reasoning behind stuff and the end broke my heart because I felt his apology although he cant undo the damage he caused his children I felt his remorse and hopefully its an assumption that he got mental help and quit drinking and turned his life around for himself and his kids.
If I remember correctly the kid who played Finny this was his first movie role he only ever played in episodes of a show. And the sister really did a good job in her role
***SPOILERS*** Would’ve been a cool ending if Finny ran to his sister and was actually a ghost, and the scenario of Finny getting away was a figment of his imagination when in reality he died trying to escape. And the movie can end with the phone ringing for another kid and Finny being the one to pick up on the other line.
that would have been good but too sad i'm glad this movie end the way he did cause a lot of those movie doesn't end good it's just depressing so i'm glad Finny survived bc of his and sister abilitys
Great movie! I’m glad you guys watched it. I think you would also love “The Lovely Bones”. Fun fact: The movie was based on a short story written by Joe Hill ( Stephen King’s son).
Ethan Hawke needs to play more antagonists! He is a great actor. I remember first seeing him in The Explorers. He does great in all his roles, but I like him best in the horror/supernatural genre.
Favorite movie of the year so far. I think this is a horror/thriller classic now for me. Everything is so well done and tied together. I love that it’s not overly showy or gory, they leave a lot of the grisly elements to your imagination which makes it so much creepier. I also get emotional during several moments of the final act. And those PERFORMANCES! Incredible film.
Whenever I see psychic powers i always think of them as The Shine lol. The Shine has different categories, the sister is a Looker while the brother is more similar to Danny who's powers mostly revolve around death.
Went to see this in theaters with my fiancé because she is a horror/thriller movie fan girl. I only saw one short 30 second trailer and thought it would be awful. I left the theater absolutely loving this movie. Fantastic movie!
One of the best horror films ever made and also one of the saddest, as it deals with a teenager who gets kidnapped by a serial killer called The Grabber, must find the courage within himself to fight back.
Finn has psychic abilities like his mom and his sister, while his dont show up the way they do for his sister or mom, when the phone rang he could hear it and hear their voices, that's why Bruce had said, "It rang, but none of us heard it." Just like Ethan Hawkes character he said when he heard it ring he picked it up and heard no sounds on the other side. And his sister trying to connect to find out what happened to Finn she connected to the ghosts not him, that's why she was lead to where they were buried and not where Finn was, right across the street. Also can I say how much I appreciate how smart Finn and even all the rest of the kids are? When Finn got there the first thing he did was try to remain calm and find a way out, he only let himself cry or at least let in how scared he was after he thought he had tried every option. Not only did he escape twice, but he killed him. (Also my favorite character has gotta still be Robin)
I was thinking the same thing Steven was thinking when watching in theaters, when the police were searching the house and it was empty. Somehow Finney had been dead already which I thought would have been such a sad twist.
Similar to Black Phone, I loved Summer of 84’ it’s just like The Burbs. Summer of 84’ very very very underrated film. Black Phone meets The Burbs meets Stand By Me. Good movie. Highly recommend to people, not enough have watched it.
It's amazing how even tho it seemed like whatever the other dead kids told him didn't work, at the end, it all helped him to get out. The hole and the grill in the hole and the meat from the freezer. Great movie overall.
It’s funny that you brought up Sinister because this is the same director, and actually reminds me a lot of that movie because of the editing and the dead children.
I had to pause and laugh for 5 minutes after the "we've been trying to contact you regarding your car's extended warranty " and just when I thought I had recovered she hit me with the "have you accepted our lord and savior Jesus christ" 😂😂😂😂💀
A few fun facts about this movie. 1) It is based on a short story by Joe Hill (Stephen King's oldest child). 2) The actress who plays Gwen is real life sisters with the actress who played Violet at the beginning of Doctor Sleep (you might remember her as playing young Nell in The Haunting of Hill House). 3) Scott Derrickson directed this movie and also directed Sinister, which as you both pointed out, also starred Ethan Hawke. 4) James Ransone, who played The Grabber's brother, Max, was also in Sinister (the fanboy cop in the town) and played the adult Eddie in It Chapter Two....which brings my fun facts back to Stephen King!!! Great reaction as always!!!
i wanted to see this in the movies so bad as i luv ethan hawke and this seemed like such a good movie and i finally watched it and i loved it .. the storyline was really good and it was just overall really well done and casting was good definitely a 10/10
The scene with the movie clip is William Castle's The Tingler. All his premieres had classic gimmicks, , like seats vibrating, which were gold. Wish they still did these....
Enjoyed this one. Just watched your reactions to "Get Out" & "Us", Nikki mentioned Elisabeth Moss, you've got to do The Invisable Man 😱😱in which she starred. Love your reactions.
I think you guys should start watching Barry if/when your schedule allows it, it's a pretty good show, the balance of comedic and seriousness is impressive
My partner couldn’t watch this, but this happens to children everyday! I almost caught a child snatcher, but the police didn’t listen to me. He had a white van, and he wore Converse sneakers.
Just saw this. Not sure if anyone mentioned this (too many comments to read) but the ending reminded me of "Silence of the Lambs". Cops at one house and the protagonist at another. Very good film. I'm hoping the black phone becomes a series.
Great reaction! I just watched this last week, and I picked up on a couple things I missed this time around. For sure a movie you can go back to and enjoy over and over. Thanks!
The creepiest thing is that they don't need to tell us what the grabber wants, but they show it through his behavior. It's a good movie, definitely unsettling.
fun fact the girl who play Gwen " Madeleine McGraw" ( pacific rim, ant man the wasp, etc) is Violet McGraw bis sis in real life, you should remember Violet as young Nell Crane from The Haunting Of Hill House or young Yelena in Black Widow (or the trailer from the new horror film M3gan) they are soooo friggin talented of course Madeleine twin brother and their big brother are actors too =)
I have to say that the detectives do not act like seasoned investigators. Someone offering to help is like someone using a giant Bat Signal but instead of the Bat Signal, it's a message that says, "Somehow, someway, I'm involved and you need to take a good hard look at me."
Scott Derrickson left Dr. Strange 2 from the MCU for creative differences and reconnected with Ethan Hawke for The Black Phone, a short story from Joe Hill, the son of Stephen King. You can see a lot of similarities between King and Hill in their storytelling. In the story, Bruce Yamada is the main ghost who helped Finney to escape the Grabber, who was modeled after serial killer John Wayne Gacy. The film changed the sister's name from Susannah, who has no psychic ability, to Gwen and also made her the younger one. The mother didn’t die but left an unhappy marriage. The character Robin was created for the film to have a personal connection with Finney. Overall, the film fleshed out the narrative with engaging characters and the movie scares parents with kids.
this movie was way more chill than i expected. I wouldn't even qualify this as horror. It's a thriller if anything. The only person the killer killed on cam was his brother... 🤷♀ Pretty chill movie.
I’ve told my niece multiple times hit or kick where you can, bite if need be. Stab and twist. I’ll quiz her on weapons that aren’t typical weapons and to not get within arm-length of strangers.
Great reaction you two! 😊 This was a first time watch for me as well. If neither of you have seen these scary movies yet, I very highly recommend the original 1984 "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "The Exorcist", the 2017 "IT" remake, and it's 2019 sequel "IT: Chapter 2".
NGL I was a bit surprised you both chose to watch this one because I know what loving parents you are. But glad you got through it and made a great video

Great observation.
This movie was so good. The ending when the boys talked to him on the phone made me cry so hard
Yea someone was chopping onions 🧅 in my house.
The Little girl is too good an actor and feel she will make it far 😂👌🏻
She is awesome definitely best friends with Ellie from last of us
The early scenes with the bullying hit hard, because I went through the same as a kid.
@@sentinell1208 I guess you never heard of short stories. They’re supposed to be short 💀.
I just love Nikki’s jokes about the phone 😂❤
the extended warranty joke had me snort
@@avalonllewellyn7187 🤣🤣🤣
@@shawnteeisme great points as welll!
OOOOMG Nikki that whispered "extended warranty" and "accepting Jesus" call literally made me LOL and wake up my whole house 🤣😂
If I remember correctly the kid who played Finny this was his first movie role he only ever played in episodes of a show. And the sister really did a good job in her role
***SPOILERS***
Would’ve been a cool ending if Finny ran to his sister and was actually a ghost, and the scenario of Finny getting away was a figment of his imagination when in reality he died trying to escape. And the movie can end with the phone ringing for another kid and Finny being the one to pick up on the other line.
That would be a great twist, but such a depressing ending.
that would have been good but too sad i'm glad this movie end the way he did cause a lot of those movie doesn't end good it's just depressing so i'm glad Finny survived bc of his and sister abilitys
That would’ve been really good but I liked the ending too
The grabber told Fin that he should snap his neck for what he did to his arm, not knowing that later Fin will be the one to snap his neck 💀
"Jesus, what the f**ck?" will never not get me laughing so hard.
1 point for Nikki - Extended car warranty. Well played.
I mean this is based on a story written by Joe Hill, Stephen kings son, so I think there was some inspiration there
Went to see this in theaters with my fiancé because she is a horror/thriller movie fan girl.
Loved the message in that regard
Girl we know the plot u don’t have to explain it
Steves face during that abuse scene.. if looks could kill!
The acting, the camera job, wow wow wow
We went and saw this in the theatre right when it came out just on a whim and really liked it. Super hyped to see you do this one.
Similar to Black Phone, I loved Summer of 84’ it’s just like The Burbs. Summer of 84’ very very very underrated film. Black Phone meets The Burbs meets Stand By Me. Good movie. Highly recommend to people, not enough have watched it.
Nikki making the extended warranty joke cracked me up. Much needed in such a heavy movie.
It's amazing how even tho it seemed like whatever the other dead kids told him didn't work, at the end, it all helped him to get out. The hole and the grill in the hole and the meat from the freezer. Great movie overall.
Fun Fact, this film was adaptation from the short story The Black Phone which was written by Joe Hill the son of Stephen King
Sinister, Insidious, Upgrade, Split, Jordan Peele's movies, the Purge movies... if it's a Blumhouse production, you know it's going to be good.
“We’ve been trying to contact you about your cars extended warranty.” The joke absolutely tickle Nikki’s belly. I’m dead. 😂😂😂
Yay! Really enjoyed this one, Ethan Hawke has just been on fire this year. That said, lil sis acted her SOCKS OFF in this!
It’s funny that you brought up Sinister because this is the same director, and actually reminds me a lot of that movie because of the editing and the dead children.
I like this kind of flick when the supernatural aspect is not the antagonist~
My sister told me about this true story, the whole thing. I’m glad she was with me when we watched this movie.
I had to pause and laugh for 5 minutes after the "we've been trying to contact you regarding your car's extended warranty " and just when I thought I had recovered she hit me with the "have you accepted our lord and savior Jesus christ" 😂😂😂😂💀
I L O V E Nikki's horror reactions! Been waiting on this once since it came out!
This is based on a short story by Stephen King's son Joe Hill, loved the story but loved the movie even more 😀
Watch IT Chapter 1&2 after this. You guys gonna love it trust me 😉.
You gotta do Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. Arguably the best horror-comedy ever made and it's pretty much made for reaction channels.
We need a compilation of Nikki saying "oh f-ck this, I got to go" 🤣 or her slapping
That scene was so hard to watch. The little girl is such a great actor that it gave me chillsss
i wanted to see this in the movies so bad as i luv ethan hawke and this seemed like such a good movie and i finally watched it and i loved it .. the storyline was really good and it was just overall really well done and casting was good definitely a 10/10
The scene with the movie clip is William Castle's The Tingler.
This movie was so good. That last scene with Robin got to me.
I just love when she gets stressed she hits his arm and is gripping it 🤣🤣🤣💚💚💚
the bonk sound effect when gwen hit a rock over the kids head 😂
Nikki's reaction is honestly everything xD This movie freaked me out too :D
I think you guys should start watching Barry if/when your schedule allows it, it's a pretty good show, the balance of comedic and seriousness is impressive
Nikki's horror movies are the best! can't wait for the next one whichever one it'll be!
Such a dope movie. This, The Batman and Prey are my top three movies of the year so far.
My partner couldn’t watch this, but this happens to children everyday!
I almost caught a child snatcher, but the police didn’t listen to me. He had a white van, and he wore Converse sneakers.
Another thing I learned parents teach us to be nice and helpful WRONG being polite and nice isn’t always good
This is based on a book by stephen kings son
Just saw this. Not sure if anyone mentioned this (too many comments to read) but the ending reminded me of "Silence of the Lambs". Cops at one house and the protagonist at another. Very good film. I'm hoping the black phone becomes a series.
Great reaction! I just watched this last week, and I picked up on a couple things I missed this time around. For sure a movie you can go back to and enjoy over and over. Thanks!
The creepiest thing is that they don't need to tell us what the grabber wants, but they show it through his behavior. It's a good movie, definitely unsettling.
safe to say, Finn will be a different breed of man when he grows up.
You forget how different the 70”s were.
fun fact the girl who play Gwen " Madeleine McGraw" ( pacific rim, ant man the wasp, etc) is Violet McGraw bis sis in real life, you should remember Violet as young Nell Crane from The Haunting Of Hill House or young Yelena in Black Widow (or the trailer from the new horror film M3gan) they are soooo friggin talented of course Madeleine twin brother and their big brother are actors too =)
I have to say that the detectives do not act like seasoned investigators. Someone offering to help is like someone using a giant Bat Signal but instead of the Bat Signal, it's a message that says, "Somehow, someway, I'm involved and you need to take a good hard look at me."
Man that little girl can act.
I always cry liike a baby when Robin calls Finn, that's emocional as fuck!
49:47 Nikki is The Grabber CONFIRMED!!
Those kids are amazing, and that sibling relationship is great. I'm sad for all the dead kids.
I’m sure you teach your children to be aware of their surroundings ❣️
And not to trust strangers!
this movie was way more chill than i expected. I wouldn't even qualify this as horror. It's a thriller if anything.
The only person the killer killed on cam was his brother... 🤷♀
Pretty chill movie.
The dad annoyed me more than the killer
I’ve told my niece multiple times hit or kick where you can, bite if need be. Stab and twist. I’ll quiz her on weapons that aren’t typical weapons and to not get within arm-length of strangers.
Great reaction you two! 😊
This was a first time watch for me as well.
If neither of you have seen these scary movies yet, I very highly recommend the original 1984 "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "The Exorcist", the 2017 "IT" remake, and it's 2019 sequel "IT: Chapter 2".
They could skip IT 2, awful sequel of a great remake. Terrible waste of a perfect cast
“Finn’s arm is MINT!”
Love that line🤣
Nikki in the beginning...not realizing the anxiety that's about to come... 👁️👄👁️
NGL I was a bit surprised you both chose to watch this one because I know what loving parents you are. But glad you got through it and made a great video
