Yes kids can be smart and observant, but they don’t have that level of psychological understanding of emotions, what causes them, coping mechanisms, etc. And even if somehow they do, putting that into perfect words after just realizing it is still a stretch, so I agree with Dylan that it doesn’t seem believable, it would’ve been more so if it was done in another way (more accurate for a 12 y/o) or if the kid was a few years older

As a high school teacher - I can definitely attest that most 8-13 year old “kids” are sooooo switched on. They are basically witty, mini-sized adults and have very outgoing, individualised personalities, that are heightened even more by hormones. They can be full-on adults and then in a split second change to puberty driven teens who say/think the craziest, intense or insightful things. Having just 4-5 of these kinds of kids in a class of 28-30 is basically just controlled chaos at the best of times LOL. Junior high school is pretty funny and most teachers have to wear a poker face for 90% of class time. They also absorb EVERYTHING like sponges, so the synapses in their brains are just firing off 100% of the time and they mimic/mock adults like parrots.

As many people in the comments have pointed out, kids with trauma often grow up faster to deal with the situation they're in. Plus, 12-year-olds aren't 'little'- people often group 8-year-olds and 12-year-olds together when they're not the same. 12-year-olds (especially traumatised ones) are often self-aware due to their early matureness.

Not “get wittier.” I agree with the rest of your comment as an analysis on Dylan’s intentions with his rant, except for that self-serving assumption about a person you don’t know who’s already admitted to having suffered a lot of trauma as a kid.

It didn't bother me in this instance, but I get why it might bother people. I mean about 90% of kids in movies are written to be way more mature and witty than real life kids. It's a cliche. Hollywood writing is 99% a cliche ridden borefest nowadays, so...
I didn't even finish this movie. It's nothing we haven't seen about a hundred times already. Meh.

I don’t know I feel like 12 year olds as someone who was kind of recently that age and have been around are witty once and ridiculous the other times. I've got anxiety problems, but I'm absolutely fearless and proactive in a crisis.

Dylan makes such a good point about integrating dialogue in scenes, instead of having them walk from Point A to Point B, stop to talk, them move to Point C. Like one of my chill faves movies (as in it's obviously not some cinematic masterpiece but I like it as a chill, stress-free rewatch) is Ocean's 8, and but it's kind of slow. Their build-up to the heist where they're still establishing key information, introducing the team, and working out the plan is slow and could've been snappier if they whittled down a lot of unnecessary scenes _while still_ keeping everything intact. I've rewatched it so many times I can rewrite the scenes in my head to better cut down the length but still keep majority of the dialogue - now whether or not my imaginary rewrites is any good is completely questionable because I'm not screenwriter/director, nor a Professional Movie Watcher™ like Dylan, but the need to cut unnecessary walking scenes and rearrange the conversation scenes is there.

I have a younger sister who’s 13 I’m currently 16 and I can confidently say she’s more mature than me. Maybe that’s why I personally never saw an issue with the kid being this smart. I also liked this scene 21:55 because I love the idea of your childhood self helping him in the future when it’s usually the other way around. Of course this is just my opinion and I think it’s interesting that both of us had a very different take.
