      Directorial debut for both of these guys, they turned down a DCEU film so that this could be their first. It's wasn't scary to me at all but very disturbing and intriguing with such a unique take on possession. The correlation between possession and substance abuse and the addictive aspects was heavily implied. Also, everyone in the film is new except for the mom, played by Miranda Otto, who has been in everything from Annabelle and War Of The Worlds to LOTR.

    It was actually the drowned woman that Mia first let in that was pretending to be her mother the whole time. Which is why you can hear under water noises every time her mother is around and why she gets more and more soaked over time. Also if you slow it down at the end it shows that jade actually pushed Mia infront of the car to save her brother.

    My interpretation was that no one "needed" to die in the end. One of the friends said at the start of the movie if you die while possessed your spirit is stuck with them forever. It was just the evil spirit trying to convince her to kill him so they could keep his soul. Also the brother who was stabbed said that the spirits leave if you stop using the hand. But mia was unable to stop and made everything worse by continuing to convince herself to use it. It's a very accurate depiction of addiction.

  • @psychokitty71
    @psychokitty71 9 месяцев назад +245

    There are a lot of subtle clues in this film that are extremely easy to miss on the first watch, like the gurgling sounds accompanying Mia's "mother" whenever she appears. The brother at the start of the film flat out stated that the spirits lose their hold on you over time. However, instead of leaving it alone, Mia used the hand more and more. The whole movie is an analogy for drug addiction and the part that grief and depression can play into someone getting addicted. The things that the kids did, including the peer pressure and trying to convince Mia to use it because it was harmless reflect a party scene that includes drugs. There's also the way that the "drug" affects people differently. Some can use it repeatedly with no apparent lingering effects, some can use it only one or two times and get addicted and some can use it just once and die. Or, in Riley's case, almost die. It's a very well written and incredibly acted movie.

      not to mention the wording, I let you in. You have to be careful who you let in. the crowd you surround yourself with can and will affect you. What happened to duckett's? bro, they left him in a room, nobody checked on him till his bro broke down the door, and what everybody do take out their phones to record. No help what so ever. what the main party girl do? talk mad **** even flicked a cigarette at the curtains. Even the hospital scene, friends and family visit, ol dude was kidnapped by the main mc female who was allowed in the room and could visit so nurses didn't think anything of it and he almost killed bc of it.

      No one convinced her to do it☠️ Mia told jade they should go to see if it’s real and she even volunteered for it willingly. Other than that one instance of them peer pressuring her by saying "do it" it was all her.

    • @EatDatBitchAwp
      @EatDatBitchAwp 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@theeLonelyRedPanda why you complaining about that? Realistically the mom at the party would’ve got that door open called cops or taken him to the hospital since he had gashes on his back before his brother even arrived at the party. Realistically at the hospital the medical staff wouldn’t even let her get in the room, let alone take him off his bed put him in a wheelchair and stroll him out the building into the street. It’s just movie logic to move it foward, mia wouldn’t have died. Mia wouldn’t have taken riley and the brother wouldn’t be possessed since he wouldn’t be doing the "talk to me" "I let you in"

      and Talk To Me is way better than Smile!!! media and blogs were saying that ppl ran out off the theatre, vomitting, panicing, passing out and crying... that's how i kinda felt by Talk To Me not Smlie... lol

    • @AquaticOni

      @@breeayeezy The sister was a normal little girl in hereditary the entire time. She was a host for Peter who needed a male body so the cult made that happen at the party they went to. You notice the cult's insignia everywhere if you go back and watch it including on a few of the people at the party(one of them making the cake with nuts in it). Hereditary doesn't really scare you, but it does cause a feeling of extreme dread which is powered by great emotional acting.
      There's so many things to catch and piece together in the movie besides that. There's not many horror movies that can touch it in my opinion.

    At the end of the movie when “her mom” says “he’ll be ours forever” or something like that i think that’s when it clicked to Mia that that wasn’t her mom. The person who was pretending to be her mother the whole time was the first spirit that stayed latched onto her when she went over 90 secs. The drowned woman. That’s why everytime her mother was on screen you heard that bubbling water sound. & as time progressed her mom looked worse & worse. Wetter & wetter. "Is this what I'm gonna be upset watching cause I need to look out for my kids?" In a way, yes. The directors and the film itself make it clear that it's a drug analogy. Kinda like showing how things like wanting to fit in, the youthful tendency to assume invulnerability, and discovering there are alternative ways to deal with the bad feelings they are new to feeling.

    There's an unwavering bleakness at the heart of this film -- one of the most sobering depictions of life-draining depressions I've ever seen.
    Mia's utter desperation to have her Mom back, to understand what she endured and try to make sense of it; well, not everyone makes it out alive. The trauma of her mother's death was just too much. Those movies showing young people surviving trauma, then thriving, are exceptions.
    Mia got broken and stayed broken, the "drug" of the hand only made it much, much worse (feeding her lies, preying on her vulnerabilities).
    p.s. The ceramic hand reminds me of how casual sex was used in "It Follows"
    p.s.s. That suicide note is one of the most devastating messages I've ever heard. Victims of suicidal depression can sometimes sound completely resigned, hence the heartbreaking inversion of "hope."

      That is indeed an interesting take on the situation. For argument's sake, it is also possible that the trauma of death causes momentary memory loss and confusion.

Until someone just so happens to reach out to you with the hand. And maybe after youve been in that void long enough you go insane and want to steal someoen elses body (get them killed while they are possessed and be human again)

    No way should they ever had let Riley get anywhere near that hand. Not just because of his young age but because of what Mia said as she was taken over by the drowned woman. The spirits were attracted to Riley prob because of his young age and pure soul and innocence. The directors said at that moment Mia was saying they liked Riley there was a whole room full of “Predator” spirits and were all drawn to him with the most evil one of them getting a hold of him when he did it.

    Mia's jump is left open-ended, BUT the most likely take was that she was too far gone, and when she heard her "mother" say "I'll take care of him, we'll keep him forever", she chose to jump heraelf to be the one that would be with her mom forever. Remember she thought she'd killed her dad at this point. An eternity with her mom was the best she could hope for, but it was a lie.
    This wasn't just a drug parallel, but also a metaphor for that need for connection and how sometimes drugs are a way for people who feel disconnected or depressed to feel validated as part of the group. She was basically an addict, looking for connection in a drug, but a drug doesn't care for you.

    This was such an amazing movie and the more you watch the more you see!. If Mia had held out for another day or so she would have also been free. You can see throughout the movie that her mothers image deteriorates and at the end when she’s whispering in Mia’s ear to kill Riley you can see she’s wet and kinda looks like the original entity that entered Mia (the waterlogged lady). This was showing exactly what the guys brother who was stabbed was talking about.. the longer they are in you the less hold they have on you. The spirits hold and vision of her mom was lessening and she could have been free.. she would have ended up in jail anyway and hurt because of her dad but she would have been alive. I know all she wanted was to feel close to someone because she was missing connection in the real world, but still.. this just goes to show you grief is different for everyone and shows in different ways and can really do damage. Love you guys and thanks for your great reactions!! ❤

    I'm so glad you liked this! I went to theaters to see it. Went in blind with no idea what it was about, which I think is the best way to experience a movie like this. It was so amazing and original. Very impressive especially for a first film. There is already a prequel (I believe- could be a sequel) that has been greenlit. I personally hope it's a prequel so we can get the backstory of the hand.

    If anyone was curious, the song playing during the party scene at Jade and Riley's house and Mia begins to sing is called "Le Monde" by Richard Carter. It's a remix of the original song "La Foule" by Edith Piaf.

    If there’s one thing I hate about horror movies, it’s jump scares. These are the types of movies that are the reason I love horror. The kind of horror that works off of tension and uneasiness, not a quick scare. Loved this movie.

    I _really_ wanted Mia to have a last minute sacrifice, and be the hero at the end too. But after seeing it a few times now, i think she was 100% pushed by Jade. The most heroic thing she managed to do was hesitate when it came time to kill Riley. It's a _genuinely_ brutal horror movie, and i _LOVE_ it!

    In addition to trying to figure out if Mia finally realized she was being tricked and decided to jump, you could also consider that Jade actually pushed her to save Riley. That part was definitely unclear. Honestly, the movie is a lot. My favorite characters were poor, sweet Riley and the mom (because she is totally me, lol.).

  • @aubrey8673
    @aubrey8673 9 месяцев назад +2

    I think Mia finally realized she was being played all along by the demon because it said to her will have him forever and that’s the thing those demons said, and she was warned about and that’s why she took her hands off the wheel chair. but you can see that Jade pushed her If you slow down the clip. I think she did let go, but Jade didn’t know and she just wanted to save her brother. In turn not knowing that Mia had finally realized the truth and wasn’t going to kill Riley.

    No one magically healed in the end. What happens is that the concept of death here draws heavily from religions such as spiritualism and other African American religions. The way purgatory is portrayed in this film refers to these religions, in which it is a very dark and desolate place, where low-frequency spirits stay - angry spirits, very attached to matter, spirits of people who have had unexpected/sudden deaths or who took their own lives. Talk To Me shows little about this place, but it very well explores the concepts said by experts on the subject - how the connection between the planes works (earthly and astral), and the candle is very important in this sense, as it is the guide/ the light that attracts greasy souls. And that we should not trust these spirits, because they will try to trick us and deceive us. When Mia died at the end, time began to pass differently for her. Riley recovered, just like Mia's father, and she got lost in the dark [2]

    Mia didn't jump into the traffic, she wanted to kill the boy and was fully under control of that demon/spirit thing (it was never her mother), the sister saved him and pushed her. those spirits wanted Riley to die while they still have hold on him to trap him forever and were manipulating Mia. if they just freakin let it go and stopped using the hand all would be fine but she just kept going...
