My immediate thought is of Sailor Pluto, who was clearly intended to be older than the core Sailor Scouts, but was wearing much the same outfit. It actually works for Pluto, though, largely because of demeanor and accessories: she moves like a more mature woman who knows what she's doing compared to the core group, and the accessories on her outfit and ever-present staff gave her overall look much more of a sense of purpose and presence. Maybe that was a way they could've gone with Nilah; still clearly 'magical girl', but with a more defined role and place in a hierarchy.
Agreed! There are plenty of ways of reworking magical girl aesthetics to seem more mature and elegant instead of young and playful. The anime boueibu is a tongue in cheek satire of magical girl + fujoshi culture, so it has magical boys instead of magical girls. Their outfits are still frilly, but more along the lines of being “prince-like” than hyperfeminine. They give variation to the lengths of the pants and sleeves, so the more playful and young characters have shorts and short sleeves, while the more serious or mature characters have pants/capris, long/quarter length sleeves, and/or tall boots.
Some of that stems from Naoko Takeuchi's deep understanding of fashion design, I think. The senshi uniform she settled on is a simple design that can be easily tweaked with accessories and hairstyle to look anything from cute to sporty to elegant. There's a reason Sailor Moon is so fondly regarded by fashion nerds!

In the Pretty Cure series, by Toei, when it comes to older characters who become a Precure (or just Cure) their outfits tend to have longer adornments. Longer skirts, bigger floor-length hair, or are given capes. Examples of this being Cure Flower from Heartcatch Precure, Cure Moonlight also from Heartcatch, Cure Earth from Healin' Good Precure, and Cure Butterfly from Hirogaru Sky Precure. If you want an older character to fit the Magical Girl aesthetic make them wear a gown or a robe, it some how helps represent their maturity compared to the skirt/short wearing younger members.
I think that it being a less mature outfit is fine for a magical girl. Comes with the territory after all. I had a veteran DnD magical girl once and she hated her bright girly costume, but it's based on childish magic and possibly dreams.
Thing is that in magical girls series we do have older ones being magic girls but having different outfit. Check out cure moonlight for example from heartcatch precure. She has more elaborate and "bigger" outfit then rest of the younger precures. And it fits her very well
My pitch as far as doing a "mature" Star Guardian: Give her a much more classic like '90s era, magical girl design then have her be like a counselor or teacher at the school. On the topic of "branching the star guardians out a little bit" I'd LOVE to see them do like a sister skin line designed around Tokusatsu. As far as I'm concerned the only difference between a tokusatsu and a magical girl is if the visual effects for the transformation sequence are glitter and sparkles or a gasoline fireball.
I dunno: I like to think that maybe she is like a magical girl who has been at the job of being a magical girl for so long that she grew up into a woman but is still going strong with the magical girl job with the same spirit and energy she had in her youth... Maybe even being a teacher and mentor to young magical girls who are taking up the mantal. I honestly like that idea, it's an idea of magical girls that is so rarely seen that I have only seen it done maybe once and I kinda dig it.
I don't really see her as a "Cosplay" person, I see her more like "Used to be a great magical girl back in the day and occasionally comes back to her old costume to help the younger generation".
I agree with the clothing giving vibes of being too young for her, but I can't really point out WHY it feels that way. What specific elements make it look off? It can't just be the entire aesthetic since it still seemingly working on older champs like Syndra?
for me, its pose and the happyness, she seems more "I'm a teen being a magical girl" for the first time look, instead of, "I have this job that i have done for years that i enjoy" look to her face.
I imagine that the magical girl outfit hasn’t changed since she was younger so it’s like wearing an old costume that fit you better when you were younger kinda thing (Although that clearly wasn’t their design)

I honestly don’t think it’s the body, but the face, it’s possible to look young with her body type, a ton of teenage girls have a body like that, but her face has that more mature vibe.
Sometimes there’s some girls in highschool that matures way faster than others and can develop larger breasts, wider hips or just look way taller and bigger in general. I don’t think her looking more mature is a bad thing for star guardians. Don’t associate looking mature as bad because young girls already get enough criticism and gets sexualized way too early in their life. Let her be.

I don't know about LoL, but when you mention that she was a veteran, I can see this as her wanting to be a magical girl but didn't get the chance to (either wanting to dress like a magical girl or be a literal magical girl), so now that she's older, she got that chance and is happier.

I feel like Star Guardian Nilah gets a really bad rep. I think it fits her very well aesthetically (character with a sword whip naturally fits a magical girl) and it also fits her character. Just... yeah can't deny that Nilah looks like a 26 year old mom trying to dress up like a 16 year old, _especially_ in her model.
This is a swing and a miss for me. The idea that a magical girl character innately looks awkward because of it being a grown woman feels weird and ageist to me and I honestly wish more delightful, colorful character designs were placed on adults. Bringing up cosplay in this way also feels infantilizing towards actual cosplay in a way that I don't like.
Man I hate to disagree with you here. I feel coven is SUCH a good fit for her character that even if it’s done weakly it takes the spot. (Soul fighter Nilah is still her best)
No they aged up seraphine, syndra, zoe, gwen, senna and nilah by hundreds of years and in Zoe's,gwen's, fiddlesticks's/harp's and syndra's cas by millions of years they just look super young due to star guardians not being able to physically age

Just... yeah can't deny that Nilah looks like a 26 year old mom trying to dress up like a 16 year old, _especially_ in her model.
Wtf her face can blink??? There's barely any characters with blinking a animation. I now realize Nilah can.
Eeh I like that even grown up women can wear magical girl fits. It feels more inclusive for people who have a similar body type
This is why you need to adjust suit for older womans
Los colores son el problema
This is a swing and a miss for me. The idea that a magical girl character innately looks awkward because of it being a grown woman feels weird and ageist to me and I honestly wish more delightful, colorful character designs were placed on adults. Bringing up cosplay in this way also feels infantilizing towards actual cosplay in a way that I don't like.
Soulfighter is her best skin
What about soul fighter nilah?
What is going on with her sword?
There's no reason they shouldn't have treated nilahs star guardian as sailor Pluto.
Isn't weird that they aged down some characters to fit the skinline but not Nilah? 🤔
Man I hate to disagree with you here. I feel coven is SUCH a good fit for her character that even if it’s done weakly it takes the spot. (Soul fighter Nilah is still her best)
Engagement!
Why is she a rubberband when shes dancing? 😭
Star guardian Renata when??
Soul Fighter
Isn't it weird that they aged down all the other champions (except maybe Janna) but not Nilah?
No they aged up seraphine, syndra, zoe, gwen, senna and nilah by hundreds of years and in Zoe's,gwen's, fiddlesticks's/harp's and syndra's cas by millions of years they just look super young due to star guardians not being able to physically age
?? I think precure now have many adult woman
