Beethoven also smoked a pipe while Brahms loved cigars. Schubert also always smoked his pipe while writing his beautiful music. We are in good company.
I can only wonder if maybe maybe the translator of the poem was not a pipe smoker and was confused/ mistranslated the verse?
To any classically trained musician, such as myself, JS Bach represents the epitome of music, and, to some extent, the apex of western culture.
This is by no means an exageration. Believe me.
I believe you!
The poem provide lirycs to 515 BWV Aria. And the style and tone reflect a tipical Lutheran mind of its time.
He also wrote The Coffee Cantata.
Maybe that could be part of a new series? Famous pipe "S"-ers in history. Bonus if they wrote a poem!
Good idea!
As a mega Bach fan, I like this.
"I smoke my pipe and worship God" I guess we can include Bach amongst the other famous Christian pipe smokers now.
A good German Lutheran sentiment!
It wouldn't surprise me if Bach put to music the topic of tobacco smoking. After all, he wrote the "coffee cantata" in honor of another of my most favorite substances. I knew about the latter, since his music was the topic of my scholarly study in graduate school, but I'm surprised that I never came across his tobacco poem. Thanks for sharing!
Good to know!

The Aria (song for solo voice) is BWV 515 by the way. You can find several performances on RUclips.
Thanks!
Not much to add this week. I listened to the show while cooking breakfast this morning. It's currently raining outside, so it's going to be a stay in day. It's been raining a lot in this last week.
As I've been diving more into the Nirvana rabbit hole, I found out through Shonen Knife that The Melvins have quite the following in Japan. They very recently had a tour here, but I wasn't able to go.
And all of this started all because I wanted to play The Moffatts's song better, as a lot of their stuff was influenced by bands like Nirvana, Silverchair, and Bush. The singles from their final studio album has some bangers- Bang Bang Boom, Just Another Phase, and Walking Behind. Misery was released prior to that, but I noticed immediately that the song shares some of the Kurt Cobain power chords.
I find it interesting how one rabbit hole leads to another, and another. I feel like I am decades behind the music discovery thing because grunge, alternative, and metal was banned from our house for many years in my youth. And then I got busy with college, uni, and life. But it's great to have The Beatles' Helter Skelter at the ready when older generations criticise these genres of music.
Interesting! I never really got into the Melvins, but I know that Cobain liked them. I remember the first time I heard Helter Skelter as a kid. I couldn't belive something that heavy came out when it did.
My clay (RIP) had stained quite a bit. Fun poem. I first heard it a decade ago or so.
10:55 He did know what he was talking about. After saying:
No stain, the pipe's hue yet doth darken;
It remains white. Thus do I know
That when to death's call I must harken
My body, too, all pale will grow."
He went on to say:
"To black beneath the sod 'twill turn,
Likewise the pipe, if oft it burn."
I wasn't paying close enough attention to what I was reading!
Interesting tidbit about clay pipes. If one is put into a fireplace and left to burn awhile, it will turn white again. Tested and works! From the “Christmas Pipe.”
Interesting, but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense!
Bradley, I really enjoyed this. But it's good that Bach had a day job. You look like you're doing well, much better than I did this soon after a nearly identical cataclysm, lo these many years ago. Keep at it, my good friend!
Good Evening 😊 Awesome Video Mate👌🏽Thanks for the updates 👍🏼 Appreciate your time sharing a pipe with me 🌬💨💨 Have a wonderful week ahead & God Bless 🙏🏽 Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦

@@thomaswebb248😂 thanks Webb!
The German reading was good.... really......lolol..... Bach was the Led Zeppelin of his time..
My favourite rendition of Bach’s song is this one, where the singer is actually holding a pipe and addressing it: ruclips.net/video/fkgKdVzexsI/видео.htmlsi=bybzJhL6bcsa7IVr
As for the themes, they are quite common in verse and song for that time. There are several other early 18th Century compositions where the same themes are present, such as decay, the transience and ephemeral smoke symbolising Man’s spirit etcetera. This performance by The Virginia Company of the early 18th Century song “Tobacco’s But An Indian Weed” is nice, very folky. ruclips.net/video/ym5DfviAZ-w/видео.htmlsi=tw7v-EHyi3liEQ4f
Very interesting, and thank you so much!
I loved the bit about Bach. Speaking of tobacco in music history, It's actually a pretty common theme. Of course in Bizet's opera Carmen, Carmen works in a cigar and cigarette factory and they originally smoked cigars on stage while performing. My favorite though has to be Tobias Hume's renaissance masterpiece, "Sing Sweetly for Tobacco." It's in English! Here's a video of that: ruclips.net/video/gKv4GKNjKDc/видео.html
Thanks for the info!
Love your videos! You should review Cornell and diehl Virginia gentlemen If you get the time I've heard a lot of good things about it
Thanks for the suggestion!
You're welcome. I really enjoyed your video on Star of the east and haunted bookshop. You were right about haunted bookshop it is very good.I ordered both of them after seeing your review and it seems like your taste in tobacco is pretty close to mine. I have some Virginia gentleman on the way, arriving tomorrow hopefully!!! Cornell and diehl is quickly becoming my favorite brand. They have very good blends and most can be bought in bulk. Thanks for your reviews and the time u spend doing them I really enjoy your channel.
Do they put recon tobacco in pipe tobacco?
Tea used to be enjoyed through a pipe? I’m trying to imagine it.
Is tobacco pipes shipping tobacco to WA?
Not for retail anyway. I'm assuming there's a loophole when they're sending it for free.
@@stuffandthingsyoutube i see, thanks!
i could review your vanilla tobacco. just helping you out!
I don't get it - are you not allowed to say the word tobacco?
They de-monetize vids that mention it.
If among your stuff and things you have a dictionary, do consult it for the correct pronunciation of contemplatively. @11:00
I know the pronunciation to which you're referring, but I'm not going to take the loss here. ;-) Emphasizing the first syllable is a valid alternate pronunciation (in the USA at least). www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/contemplative
