It's brother Black Mallory has the same components but is more rounded. I prefer it over Red Rapparee.

Black Mallory is stronger and a little more sweet than Red Rapparee. I really like both though, but I would chose Black Mallory over this. I definitely like this enough to keep it stocked up in my cellar though!

I love Red Rapparee; it is currently my ‘baseline’ English blend, the blend against which I judge all other Balkan and English blends.

Awesome! Glad you reviewed this one. I feel this tobacco bowl starts off in a lighter way and finishes stronger. Us Rattray's fan boys are smiling saying welcome to the family now. You'll be back for more I bet.

The only Rattrays blend I have tried is Hal o the Wynd. I do very much enjoy that blend as it has that Kentucky I love so much. I will definitely be trying more Rattrays in the future.

Hal is definitely stronger than Red Rapparee and in a different ballpark flavourwise. But it's definitely a very good blend.
Other Rattray's blends you might enjoy are: Marlin Flake, Old Gowrie and Black Mallory. Maybe Accountant's Mixture as an all-day blend. Can recommend all of them, especially Old Gowrie (also with Kentucky).

Nice, solid tobacco blend. I kind of put in the same category as Presbyterian Mixture and Fusilier's Ration. The Cavendish is definitely there to offset some of the Oriental tang with a bit of sweetness, but I'm pretty much on point with your assessment at the end of this video. A nice smoky, slightly spicy English blend.

I alternate a lite aromatic with sundry English blends in tins (only) that I like or come across. Have become a recent Rattray convert and like Red Raparee, Accountant’s Mixture, 7 Reserve, and most of all, Red Lion. Wish I’d have discovered Rattray long ago - great stuff. 51 years a pipe smoker and I enjoy your videos Bradley!

I am glad you are trying Rattray's blends now since they are well available here in Japan. Would you be interested in doing "Hal O' the Wynd" maybe? Here is a description I found online:
"Hal O' The Wynd" is an unusually strong Virginia-based mixture. Fire-cured Kentucky is added to a base of a variety of Virginias and Perique completes this mixture. It is then pressed and finally rubbed by hand.
    Also, Stirling Flake sounds promising:
"Stirling Flake is a full-bodied blend for the experienced smoker who enjoys the full power of an English Flake. Equal amounts of air-cured, flue-cured and dark fired tobacco give this powerhouse its specific flavour. "

RRR is one of the blends I go to if I want something interesting. As you've noticed, every puff can be a little different, sometimes more than a little, and sometimes that's exactly what I want from a blend (Nightcap provides that, too, for example).
It was also, after I had tried only a couple of Latakia Blends and being quite new to "the dark side", the first Oriental-forward blend and I enjoyed it immediately and immensely.
I'm not at all surprised that you (will apparently) like it.
Thanks as always for your videos, best wishes!
    Michael

If flavour was a colour. The first time I tried it - it was like smoking a forever changing light 💡 bulb. ( multiple colours) No I wasn’t “tripping” lol. But it carries on throughout the bowl. No a boring smoke at all. And keeps you interested throughout. Like a kaleidoscope of flavours 🎉

I don’t know why, but when I smoke this I get a distinct taste of grape juice. Or maybe a grape jelly. Not very strong, but it is distinct and noticeable. I really like it, but I do think Black Mallory is a superior blend, not by much though

Very cool to see a Rattrays blend video! I smoked them quite a bit when I was starting out. I liked Red Rapp, but was partial to Black Mallory which has a deeper taste profile. Looking forward to the review!

Glad you are reviewing this one. I found it to be very similar to MM965 due to the slight sweetness of the cavendish and its oriental forward nature. I pretty good blend

As still a relatively new pipe smoker, I am pleasantly surprised that I have enjoyed Rattray’s blends. Old Gowrie is great and Marlin flake and Howl O’ the Wynd are good, too, if a little strong.

There is no shame in being an aromatics man. Dont let them tell you otherwise. Try bagpipers dream n Davidof danish mixture.

@@BlakesPipes Don't be ashamed of liking what you like. I've been in the hobby for about 8 years and aromatics are still my go-to. If you haven't tried them yet, Gawith Hoggarth & Co American Delite, Sutliff Eastfarthing and and Sillem's Linea Epoch Antique are all aro's in my "10 I love" so I'd recommend trying them if you haven't.
Bagpiper's Dream is tasty too, as recommended by Ricky-oi3wv, but be careful as it has a tendency to bite.

I know someone who exclusively smokes this tobacco and I really enjoy the blend as well. BUT... this blend tends to get a lot of fanfare compared to other Rattray blends but I don't think it sticks out in their lineup. Try some other Rattray blends if any of you think this one is good and I think you'll have a few more favorites.

Bradley, I haven't smoked any Red Rapparee since it's been blended by Kolhasse and Kopp. Back in the Murray's era, it was a powerful smoke, so much so that I had to consume it in a meerschaum or calabash. Very good, but definitely not a daily blend. Looking forward to your full review!

Well, if you're sucking a pipe like a vacuum, then it's all your fault.
You blow into the pipe cause that's how it's been designed.
      You only inhale 10%.
      You DON'T inhale 100%

@@stuffandthingsyoutube My experience with Rattray's blends goes back to the "cutter top" cans, and labels that read, "Blended by Charles Rattray at Perth, Scotland." In other words, THE REAL THING. Perhaps Rattray's most famous mixture was Black Mallory, where the tin said, "blended with the full strength of Red Rapparee." And the first Rattray's tobacco I ever smoked, 7 Reserve, was described as being for the smoker who "enjoys Red Rapparee but smokes throughout the day." In other words, it was powerful stuff!
