Thanks for the good words, Vin. I binge-watched all the tribute vids I could find last night, until about 2AM ... I've got a little Savinelli bulldog ready to go for a 4PM PST smoke with you - and a lot of other loving guys out there. Luckily for me, I couldn't put my finger on any 'Haunted Bookshop' but I will crack a vintage 2008 tin of 'Old Joe Krantz'. From what I've heard, that should be about as bad to my Balkan-loving tastebuds. Hard to describe how very much I want to share a smoke with you today.

It’s September 2023. I just began my pipe journey in August. I have watched all of Matches860 videos and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Well said Tom. When I first started smoking a pipe I found Matches' videos, as well as Holy Smoking Pipe Padre, Muttinchop Piper, and yourself. It's really is a shame that Matches passed away but legends never die, you know?
For us, for now, John is alive and well, I'd say. I've been impressed with the number of VRs talking about him. Rarely have I watched so many pipe videos!

John was the "God Father" so to speak to the YTPC. With the Artful Codger as the under boss. He was the first guy I saw on RUclips for pipe smoking. I got a Tavern Pipe from a buddy of mine from Williamsburg Virginia. I looked up tavern pipes and how to smoke them, low and behold there was John, with no mustache smoking this long white clay pipe! LOL !! I subbed him right away and watched EVERY video. I got up the nerve and searched him out and got him on messenger. He answered me back with in a half hour. The rest was history. Hey Tom, my Dad died 2 years ago at the age of 65. He died the same way, heart stopped. He wasn't sick there was no sign of anything. He was here one second then the next gone. I really wanted to see his spirit and know he is ok. My dad was a prankster and teased us all the time. Jumping out from around the corner and scaring the piss out of my brother and I. Shït, he was doing that to us when we were in our 30s!! Don't think I'm a nut, but when he first died I was scared he would jump out and freak me out just to mess with me. I miss him so much man. John's daughter has a long road ahead of her. Its been two years for me and I still miss my dads hug and his tickle from his mustache on my cheek, the smell of his Salem lights cigarettes coming off his clothes and baseball cap. It sucks losing a parent.

The intro alone set him apart from the crowd. It also evolved and got drawn out as he made more vids.

It is not the length of life that matters it is the quality of life in the time we have.

Great job honoring John. I will never be able to think Savinelli without thinking about his live webcast. I will try to smoke mine tomorrow night. I had a root canal today, so nothing in the mouth for me today.

Thank you Tom for sharing your thoughts and tribute to John. I love your three cheers tribute to help celebrate the life lost and recognize and remember all the great things and lives touched by those who are lost. A sad time for all of us for sure but many many great memories that John has shared with us through his videos and live streams and it is really amazing to see just how many people he touched all over the world. That is something we can all hang onto and find some happiness in during a tough time like this. Thank you as well for always making me feel like I am sitting with an old friend and sharing a smoke and chat every time I watch your videos. Best wishes.

This video is the first I have heard of John's passing. It will take a while to sink in because I am dense. I feel a loss immediately. I am sure that feeling will intensify as time goes by. But, I recently turned 70 and I am very aware of human mortality. So, R.I.P., John. I will see you soon.
Been inactive for a long time and only just passed. A beautiful tribute, he embodied everything that made the community what it was/is.

Hopefully, RUclips does not take our YTPC videos down. It would be a tragic loss as we all move along through the years. We will miss John, dearly.

So sorry to hear about John. I've been watching him and chatting with him for years. Our community / hobby will surely miss him. Cheers to John, may he rest in eternal peace.
He was such great member of the YTPC and just a great guy. I will miss the Friday night live stream.

Dear Tom, i completely agree on your point of view. Living to be dependent and helpless, i think at that point it is suffering by definition. He was a kind and generous man and great friend to all of us. May god bless his soul and bless his family with the strength to carry on. Thank you for remembering.

Well i'm very late to the party. Been gone from ytpc for ? a yr or two. Found out John had passed, a real loss. Because i was a bit tuned in again your videos popped up on my YT wall. Good to hear you again, thoughtful, and a very nice tribute to Matches 860.
John like us all shared of himself and his life with us. Im thankful he did that. Im thankful you do as well. The camera isn't our only witness. What we share here isn't just about pipes. Its merely the icebreaker. No matter our reach throughout the community we all connect in some fashion on a personal level. John sure did do that with a lot of us. Godspeed Matches. Matches was one of the guys that started my pipe smoking journey. I would watch his videos while deployed Germany to learn about different pipes and tobaccos. RIP John. YTPC has lost one of the pioneers!

I was certainly taken aback by the news of John’s passing. I always liked Matches videos I admit it’s been awhile since I’ve watched and unfortunately I’ve not been watching here either which is a shame because these are my two favorite pipe smoker channels and now I’m down to one.
I’ll have to go back into my correspondence because I was wanting to visit his favorite tobacco shop he told me where it was and now I’ve forgotten shame on me.
I'm sure John, like myself, fully realized that he made his videos for his own reasons, and would feel misunderstood if you ended up feeling guilty for anything having to do with that - it just wasn't his (nor my) intention. He enjoyed his smoking, and wanted to help others enjoy theirs, too - thus creating a shared space where we can all get together and enjoy it. Now you'll have to go back and watch some of his vids to try to find the name of that tobacco shop!

This was well said. I didn’t know John personally, but I enjoyed his videos for the reason you mentioned, “What you see is what you get.” His stories were great, his opinions were honest, and he didn’t seem to mind the little things.
