- John liked smoking in graveyards, and I do, too - so here's a Friday at 7PM (EST) smoke thinking of him.

I agree with you 100%, brother. John would have been in awe over the camaraderie in our community. I think he would've been a little miffed about all the fuss over him, because he was a simple guy that didn't like to be fussed over, but too bad!! LOL He certainly deserves it all. Great video, Tom!! Thanks!!
Thanks, Vin. I meant to do one last week but work wouldn't allow it.
-Tom
You're preaching to the choir, brother!! LOL
Yes he does
Can you believe the impact that man had on us all, whether we had the privilege to meet him or not. I watched tribute videos from people in Germany, Australia and Japan, amazing.
I'm from Germany too and you're definitely right! Many of my pipe smoking friends really loved his videos. A few days prior to his death, I had just received my first tin of Haunted Bookshop. In honour of John, I smoked some in my Savinelli 614.. and it was great! He'll always be a part of the YTPC!
@@sebastianh.1090 I bought Haunted Bookshop because of Matches but I haven't been able to handle it, too strong for me.
John deserved it all after all his years of giving to the community with his stories and info on pipes and tobacco.
Dear Tom thank you for your kind and generous words of wisdom . I have been smoking a pipe for 33 years and am also amazed by Mr. Harden’s profound impact on a splendid group of pipe smokers. Be well and thank you. Sincerest best wishes, S.
Thank you, Sandro!
-Tom
Go to the pipe Nook and preorder your official Friday savinelli! It will have a stamp on the bottom stating Matches860 and Friday savinelli! It's a limited run!!!!! I'm scrapping together my $115! Great video as always! Thanks again
I'm preordering mine Monday 👍 some big and burley waiting
Think we're all still grieving over Matches. Some sense of normality gradually coming back but it's going to take a while longer for everyone.
Good lord. I didn’t know. He was a master storyteller. He will be remembered with a lot of fondness. “Matches 86 zerooo. Smoking...the Friday Savinelli with a little Haunted Bookshop...”
as a newish pipe smoker who only recently discovered pipe content and ypt on yt and having naturally binge watched a lot of matches860 videos, i am so sorry for your loss and the communities' loss, what a great guy.
Life is short. Reality always wins. Make the most of every day.
Amen my brother
Love your videos. I’ve been watching them for years. Love your insights and thought processes. I think most pipe enthusiasts have similar thought processes. Like my dad always said “there is nothing better than a good pipe and a good fire”.
Beautiful pipe!
I'm going to miss those stories he didn't get to share. Especially his Halloween stories. I'll have to find a copy of the book you mentioned. As always, well said sir.
I regret not finding John sooner.
I stumbled across his last Friday night live stream and subscribed that evening. A couple days later he was gone
Tom you have an awesome way of telling story's and putting life in perspective I have seen non-pipe smoking RUclips channels
pay tribute to John the broad audience he reached in legendary it really teaches a great life lesson that one person and RUclips can make a difference to so many people and perhaps they them selfs never realize it and more than likely John would be embarrassed over all the attention. On one level is so sad and yet so beautiful to see on an emotional meter it is pegged.
May John remain in all or hearts and minds and may he rest in peace. May God Bless us all.
Beautiful cemetery, and great pipe! Another relaxing, thoughtful smoke - thank you!
You bring me a since of clarity that I've never had before, kind of like placing my jumbled thoughts in order and I appreciate that. It's about the only reason I make my videos so that people can gain at least a little more surrity of mind and confidence in life. I doubt you'll be missed the same way John is. I think there will be more in way of Thanksgiving for your existence than simply being missed. Thanks again for who you have decided to be and for how you have decided to display it....
Great video! You reminded me of Jack Nicholson!
Enjoyed the chat as always, Tom. The peacefulness of cemeteries is very appealing. It's great to have that space of quiet reflection with a pipe. Thanks, my friend.
Once we all have to go there. Honor his memory. 🍺🍺🍺❤
Tom, I absolutely love when I received 2 pipes from a very nice brother in our club here. And he also sent me a slew of tobaccos to try. I try to do the same to others, especially the people having issues with not being able to get tobacco because of financial issues or whatever. I can't believe the brotherhood and love that comes out of the YTPC. I think John, where ever he is now is VERY proud of us and the way we came together to comfort and support each other. Plus the way Eddie Grey got Savinelli to make a pipe in John's honor! Oh, I pre ordered mine!!
I ordered mine to
Love ya Richard!! I cherish these videos while I smoke and always will! Peace and Love brother!!✌🏼❤️
“Ave imperator morturi te salutant “...interesting reflection on life and death. Thanks Tom
Great video Tom,
Loved the setting with the lighting and sound. Beautiful place to enjoy a bowl.
John certainly has left a legacy and brought people together the way he has always done.
Have a great weekend
Regards
Mark
Interesting to see the thoughts on covid a year ago and now. Can’t beat a smoke in a graveyard and I always find my thinking going even deeper for whatever reasons while in those peaceful spaces. I think as you said it’s better to engage and enjoy every moment you can because there are no guarantees and one day tomorrow will not come so make the most of today. And enjoy every sandwich, every pipe , every coffee , every smile, every tune, every song and every video! Thanks so much for another great though provoking video and hope you are keeping well. Cheers for now
Tom, enjoyed listening to your thoughts as usual. I have been enjoying your book readings also, sometimes I'll Bluetooth into my vehicle and listen to you read on the drive to work. 😉
Tom wonderfull Video! Love the pipe and good choice of Tobacco. I choose to enjoy life, smoking many Pipes and Drinking fine Irish whisky.
Ah, the Irish whiskey would add to the mood! I'm not much of a drinker to begin with (too much of it in the family growing up) but also a volunteer fireman, so I'm sort of always on-call. That's my excuse, anyway. :)
-Tom
Hello Tom! That’s a beautiful Savinelli.
You are once again most welcome! Friday’s will never be quite the same without John’s videos.
I took yesterday off of work to do some maintenance on the GS. New brakes lines (factory rubber replace with stainless), full ABS flush as well as new plugs, fuel filter and replaced all in tank hoses and seals. Inspected the alternator belt and anything else I could reach. Tomorrow is a complete oil change, then removing tires to get a new set of rubber. Sadly I can’t balance them myself due to the hub style off the BMW - so off to the dealership to fork out $120 to mount and balance.
Too wet and cold for a pipe today ... maybe tomorrow!?
Take care and chat soon
Richard
Ka-ching! But honestly, you'd be doing that sort of maintenance on any bike, Richard. And I think they all pretty much charge a similar hourly rate - plus, you get the satisfaction of riding what is truly an engineering masterpiece. What kind of tires did you get?
I have a friend who just got a great deal on a 2004 RT, and it made me want to explore BMW again. But honestly, I'm thinking smaller, and 'known to be reliable' with many dealers - and have been looking at the Honda NC750X. But, I could just stick with the KLR650 and be done with it.
-Tom
NWPipeSmoker true ... they are nice machines for sure. I am going with a Mitas E7+ allow a good road and off mix. Honestly the KLR is itself a bulletproof platform, a master of the single thumper. The only other BMW I’d go for is the R1100 series or a single thumper 650 Dakar. All now 20 years old but great bikes, cheap and reliable.
Howdy Pardner, An interesting reflection on life(and death)what I have learned during these years working at this funeral /driving job is that nothing is grated, so where possible let us try to Cherise moment we're living, that what am thinking at my 53 years of age, it is very likely that, Mr.John H will remain in all our hearts,God Bless and All the Best,Paul
I recently read somewhere that if death = non-existence, the closest you'll come to experiencing it is under general anesthesia. Considering none of us existed roughly 9 months before our birth, and back through eternity, it's odd (but very human), that having "been there" once, we're so incapable of understanding that we might "be there" again! Anyway, nice tribute. I'm one of John's posthumous subscribers.--Tom in Boulder.
Tom- I just wanna day thank you for what you do, for RUclips and for the YTPC. I still look forward to my weekend smokes with you after all these years. I do miss our friend John but I’m grateful that guys like you are still here representing. Hip-hip-hooray for you, my friend 👍
You and CANEROD have been a real salve on this heart wound.... thank you for your continued support.
Thanks for joining us, Charles!
-Tom
Tom, I agree I think John would have chuckled and said how kind it is that everyone was so kind. What a very kind gesture of the pipe. It should bring you many great smokes. Keep em’burning and blessings from Gettysburg
Picked up my tribute savinelli on Friday! Thanks for the video. Nice gift pipe, it does suit you!👍🏻
Richard was very generous in gifting me that pipe - and I can't thank him enough! Hopefully we can connect this summer and share a bowl or two - he's just a few hours away, but in another country. You've got to smoke that tribute Savinelli on Friday at 7pm EST, George. :)
-Tom
Great video. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Always appreciate the scenary
John touched many souls and yes life goes on You never know
You’re mixing Balkan Supreme with Balkan Sobranie? That sounds like a good way to stretch the Sobranie.
Thanks for the chat. I kinda needed that. This community it amazing. Thank you sir. I'd love to burn a few bowls with you sometime.
Nice and informative video as always. Most relaxing.I like your finger tamper! Take care and greetings from Chicago-Olli

What a great Pipe! Thanks for continuing to pay respect to Matches860! Hi also from Peterson, my pipe smoking companion! A Corgi Dog!
Matches860's videos are timeless. They will be enjoyed and related to forever. I thought of him as the story-telling uncle I never had. My favorite video of his was about crazy situations he faced at work. I have watched it many times. It is so funny and so human. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/GBdFLOdN4ko/видео.html
Hey Tom , is everything ok ? haven't heard from you in a bit. hope all is well sir.
Hey Jojo, thanks for checking in! Just having a little wintertime Seasonal Affective Disorder, is all. Thanks for doing that! :)
-Tom
Hey did you buy a Matches860 tribute pipe?
Wow Tom, I sure can't remember getting the small pox inoculation, but I've got that star shaped scar on my shoulder. Amazing that it never really healed or went away. I think we're the last generation to have it. I guess you could call it a Baby Boomer Tattoo! :-)
How do I get a black bite protector/softy like that one?? Pro-level clenching.. love the vids! Thanks
It’s black vinyl tubing found at the hardware store, likely used for refrigeration.. according to some of his other vids. Either 5/8 x 1/2 or 3/8 x 1/2 depending on the size of the mouthpiece. I’m about to do the same with mine. Good luck!
NWPiper and Mr. George Bruno a fellow gentlemen's pipe smoke upload would be pleasant someday...? 🌲🎩🌲🎩🇺🇸
Wow.. eery to here him talk about Covid, no one knew anything in those first days.
Listening to him talk about Covid a year later.. EERY
Tell us the history behind Chief Seattle.
Do you ever smoke your Kirsten anymore? I just ordered my first Falcon so I’m interested in metal pipes. They seem like they would be perfect for outdoor activities because of the durability. I was watching an old BBC documentary about Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast hiking trips in England and noticed he smoked a Falcon. I’d like to find one of the original Lakeland hiking guidebooks he did. They were hand drawn and written, and were absolute works of art.
Something about a metal pipe just feels less ... warm and inviting, to me. And you have to keep the screw-in end that drains the schmutz greased, or it will weld itself to the pipe body with the help of liquids and acids reacting with the aluminum. It's fun to experiment with different materials (clay, meerschaum, different woods, metal) but briar just has the feel, the heft, the warmth.
-Tom
What are you using to cover the bit? Looks way bigger than a softy bit.
روعة الغليون انا دخن في الغليون
Memento mori
And so we should, always!
-Tom
Wait...who died?
Matches860: ruclips.net/channel/UCgf1yYZW9N4ZkCxzbYlB3dw
He is missed.
-Tom
A great chat. It was nice to sit with my pipe and listen to your musings on life and death, black plague, and all the reasons we have to celebrate the moment we're living. It reminds me of the famous phrase of the stoic philosophers: Momento Mori, "remember death".--- Todd.
@LA Pipe Smoker, so true well-spoken Sir
