Just subscribed. My wife is from the US and we have interesting conversations about pronunciation of English and American words. Pembroke is pronounced 'Pembrook'. I still can't get my head around Arkansas!
Good talk,,and hello from the Selkirk Mnts in SE BC. One of the things i use to tell people , especially those who were pleasers , is when someone asks you for something just say something like,," let me get back to you tomorrow about that", or " let me check my schedule and get back to you.". It gives you time to reflect on how you really feel rather than just react. Been enjoying your video's , thanks Bill
Interesting concept Tom, smoking a pipe creates a barrier allowing time for further thought. It can also be likened to a child with a dummy in its mouth comforting it. Smoking a pipe is comforting, relaxing and an enjoyable experience, that's why I smoke one. As I'm relaxed I'm open to deeper and more complex thoughts. With my next pipe I'll think about more deeply my friend :)
Nothing like have a smoke in nature seems to often amp the flavors of the tobaccos . Out of all your videos this one is my favorite and the first video I watched of yours and been hooked since then .. open down to earth honesty of opinions of life it was like sitting and listening to an old friend of mine Eddie Stone from Texas he was an excellent story teller and has lived an interesting life as well .
The pipe as both facilitator and shield makes a lot of sense, Tom. There is a level of attention and maintenance necessary when smoking a pipe and that of itself encourages a slower more deliberate pace of conversation. I suspect that it does also promote more periods of listening to what is being said that listening for an opening to interject more of your own ideas. Thanks for sharing! Take care and - Peace
I know it sounds crazy, I miss the rainy Northwest, hope to get back home someday,(Oregon for me) the secret is, don't let the rain stop you from doing things, and get rid of you're TV.
A decent rain jacket and hat - already got rid of the TV. But aren't our phones and tablets just TV's, after all? A recent study indicated that overall device use is at 10.5 hours a day for the age group most afflicted - and that seems understated, perhaps. They're just little TV's ... -Tom
I found this out after smoking a pipe at the pipe shop with all the guys around having a conversation. And I guess I picked up on it then, I enjoy it and it is a nice way to kind of form your thoughts as you said. Otherwise you are right we would feel more inclined to answer right away. I find that some of my best conversations have been with others smoking a pipe, or doing some sort of activity; I think its just the way we are wired. I laughed a bit when you stopped in the video and said "I hate tinted windows on cars." Always enjoy your style it is as if we were right there with you talking.Always enjoy your channel Tom, hope things are going well for you. Take care - Clayton
Thanks, Clayton - sometimes a witty and snappy answer is just what a conversation needs, other times a quieter, more considered reply, or just to listen, is the thing. A pipe can provide the tool for either one. Thanks for the good words! -Tom
Tom.. Thanks for another great video... I really appreciate them.. Great thoughts you got me thinking and I appreciate that.. Take care my friend be well 👍👍👍
Bryan's thought, I take no credit. He's a quick, witty and enthusiastic conversationalist, so for him I think the pipe gives a way to slow down his desire for the entertaining and witty response - which is always fun, but sometimes it's nice to give it some thought at the expense of good fun. All part of our hobby, and an aspect I hadn't really considered before he brought it up. -Tom
Tom I knew this shield concept all alone before and arguably many of us pipe fellers do use this helpful trick while in social situations which sure allow us for further thoughts before any action is finally taken, Take Care and Thanks for sharing these ideas, Paul
Thanks for the comment, Paul. We enjoyed our time in Norway and Sweden (and in the dead of midwinter night, Finland) last month. Everyone should be required to travel as part of their schooling! -Tom
I was sure you would do well anywhere up in north.. meanwhile I'm looking forward to warmer days,my acquaintances in great state of Tx just reported on temperatures as high as 80f- ,,
Great smoke in the Pacific North Wet. I have seen every variation of the wet stuff these last few days. Then a unpredictable sunbreak for half a day! Adam
It was 'crunch crunch crunch' on the icy sidewalk to pick up the paper this morning, then a nice sunbreak, now looking like rain. March in the PacNW! Thanks for the visit, Adam! -Tom
The other thing about my pet theory is that, contrary to the observation of how sunglasses act as a barrier, the pipe does give you that degree of separation from people without it being a wall. I tend to think of it as a mask I wear that lets me step into another person. That person being a version of myself more patient and thoughtful in conversation.
I am enjoying the weather here in PA while it lasts. It will be cold again in a few days. Very deep thoughts. I can completely see it. I like to just sit and ponder while smoking.
I tend to smoke freehand that look rustic or natural. I get it. definitely reminds me of nature. I think I would agree with the idea. happy smokes From PA!
Haha! Nice video Tom! I guess I should always keep a pipe in my mouth than! What's that old saying...."Better to keep your mouth shout and have people think you're a fool, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt"!! Hope you've been well Sir!!
Mark, do have a lot of Acer Macrophyllum in your neck of the woods? I love those trees. Thinking about adding one to my lawn in SoCal. They are native to our mtns. here, and think they would do ok down below.
Bigleaf Maple ... Gabe, you might want to have a wetter area for them in lower-elevation SoCal. The vine maples are my favorites, especially in the fall. I've heard of folks tapping Bigleaf Maples to make syrup, but there's probably more boiling down to do. The leaves mulch well - thank goodness, since the fall crop is 'yuge' -Tom
Yeah, the leaves are huge. I was thinking putting it in the lawn (regular watering) we're only 12 mi. from the coast. Watching your cemetery smoke, as your comment came in!
I do not smoke a pipe, I vape on e pipes. However I can certainly relate in that the pipe does allow one that small amount of time to ponder and to gather one's thoughts during a conversation. It allows one to listen better I think aswell.
The mechanical aspects are similar between tobacco and vaping, so why not? Don't know anybody up here using an e-pipe and vaping ... and with new regulations in the US, the inexpensive availability of a wide variety of vape juice will make vaping difficult for us. -Tom
As mark Twain once said. “If smoking is not allowed in heaven, I shall not go”. Amen. I notice a lot of small pipes. Do your own a churchwarden? If not, I recommend getting one, if so, show it.
A lot of truth in that. Another useful aspect of a pipe is that it can make you look as though you're engaged in deep thoughtful contemplation when you might be thinking of nothing more than what to have for dinner! I hate tinted windows on cars too. What are they doing in there?
Tinted windows ... I want to see that they're looking my way before they pull out in front of me. I have removed the aftermarket-added tinted side windows on my truck (with a heat gun) - it gets oppressively dark in the cabin, as well. I suspect for many if not most of us, the 'look' of a pipe is an attraction, though after awhile I would also bet that most of us just become the image by doing it and don't think much about it. -Tom
Clearly (ahem!) a stupid shield is tough to implement ... and I don't think a second pipe would help, but it would keep us busy longer and not talking! :) Good one, Stan! -Tom
I call it the alpha male syndrome,as men we're not to show weakness, bah humbug to that crap, for me a pipe becomes my tool for slowing down, reflecting & thinking, how many issues or problems were solved over pipe smoking ? far too many to count

Never thought of the pipe that way. A "shield". But, so true. Tom your thoughts and conversations are enjoyable. Thank you.

Let us know when you make it safely to The Heartland, Bryan. Was fun sharing time and adventures with you!

Well said

Unusually, very little motorcycling for me this winter - much colder and wetter (or am I just getting older?). Enjoy it while you can!
-Tom

Great video. Do you think it's the tobacco or the ritual of smoking that makes a pipe a tool for thoughtfulness? Thanks.

-Tom
Both nicotine and caffeine increase mental acuity
A shield...yeah.. a shield so I won't say something stupid!..Can you smoke two pipes at once? I need all the help I can get!!
Clearly (ahem!) a stupid shield is tough to implement ... and I don't think a second pipe would help, but it would keep us busy longer and not talking! :) Good one, Stan!
