Great video Tarly as your videos are great for the back yard lawman. As for heating the spring red hot, take and dip in cold water, and it will bring back the tension strength.
Nice quick fix. Thinking outside the box again. I fixed a friends deck spring with a rear drum brake spring from a car until I got the correct part, improvise overcome and adapt. Keep posting the great content.
Always check your adjustments on a regular basis. Watch for wear on your parts. If you find your mounting hardware is worn or if you notice notches going beyond the factory made notch, you will have problems such as he stated. Craftsman riding mowers have problems where the belt tensioner bracket can actually get hung up due to wear. It's all about maintenance and noticing things before they get too bad. Noisy bearings, loose sloppy steering due to bad bushings. A riding mower is subject to dirt abrasion and dust. Wet grass can lead to rusted parts and corroded parts. Every year, you should removed your deck and go through each and every part looking for unusual wear. It's cheaper to fix an issue before it gets to the point your belts fall off or start slipping.
Thanks for these 'quickies', and thanks to you I am gaining the confidence to work on my power equipment, latest was to replace the head gasket on my Craftsman 2000. So far so good, no extra parts left over and it is still running!
This works on MTD 46" too. Lowering deck reduces spring tension, under the variable threshold then main drive belt slips into smoke! Belt dress can help regain good rubber/steel friction too. Clean it if dirty. There your dessert...
Just had one of these come into the shop with the same issue, turns out the idler bracket was loose! I removed the fuel tank (4 bolts) and tightened the nut behind the steering column, good as new! Good quick fix, although I wouldn't recommend heating a spring because it'll lose its strength!
Taryl I have a 1998 craftman 1000 that use to have kohler twin but now has an opposed briggs how do I wire it so I don't burn out the charging system and can still use the key switch ? got it for free so the price was right .Your the best I have seen on youtube or anywhere for that matter so please help me Sir ! Thank you
I used to do the same thing on my craftsman only problem was after a couple hours of mowing the spring decided it wanted to break right at that spot I heated it up so I learned you have to make it a nice easy bend no sharp kinks otherwise you’ll have to go back and do it again in a week or two
i have this on a john deere sabre when i engage the electric pto, on the lower levels of cut it really drops the speed of the deck right out. I will have to check it out and see what i can do
Not an issue for me. Just about every mower I've used I liked the cut level in the highest position. Now I have a neighbour that likes his at putting green height.
Ken Hilson my neither but at 3” and doesn’t know where the property line is. It was very annoying as he mowed the hillside between us and would scalp the whole thing and it looked awful. I just told him I’ll mow that whole wide for you. Haven’t had any issues since.
I'll never understand why anybody wants to waste their time cutting the top off the grass! The whole idea is cut the stuff down. Oh wait a minute.....townies don't have yards.....you're like Hank Hill...you have 'lawns' and mower wars with the neighbors. I don't have time for that foolishness, dial in at '2' and let the grass fly.
@@mark-wn5ek I've read that it's best for healthy grass growth to remove the top 1/3 of it. Besides sitting on the mower is my thinking about everything time. Townie? I cut my own 1/2 acre plus the county road allowance spanning 3 properties and a 5 hour cut at my church. Mind you I've reduced the church cut to almost half . I pull a gang of mowers to get a 7 ft width. To each their own.
@Taryl Fixes All The mower I have is a 2017 Troy Bilt Bronco. Is the spring that needs shortened the one connected to the PTO cable? Model#: 13WX78BS011
Hey I have a pony Troy Bilt and my tension spring came off while I was changing my belts. To the deck and was wondering if you could help me out. It's different from the one in the video
happen to have this trash mower with this exact issue. Thank you for that. Wouldn't be so bad if they didn't put the Intek engine on there as well, all trouble waiting to happen.
Does That go for a Craftsman lawn Tractor too?? Mine dose the same thing on 3. The only different is. It comes off the pulley!! .. Anyway. I named it Christen! Because. It seems like something goes Wong with it every week!!
I have a 2013 troybilt pony. Belt keeps coming off. There is so much slack in belt when released no idea how it stays on. My blade release is on the side next to deck height arm. On my mower spring is attached to cable. Thought about getting shorter belt if possible
Hi Terrell, I have a 1987 John Deere mower that makes a loud screech/squeal when the mower blades are turned on at first then it stops is there anyway to fix why it is doing that
I have a craftsman t210 with the same problem it's a bit lose when not engaged and I have the right belt for it, it slips from time to time. I and I try to follow your fix but it doesn't have two spring loops.
If you are referring to the lever that the tension spring (he shortened) is attached to, it's made that way. I have the Troybilt LTX-1842 and it looks just like the lever on the one in his video.
thanks for all your helpful videos I was wondering if you could do a lesson on replacing the bearings on the cheap toro timemaster pulleys I saw the video on replacing it with the upgraded pulley but I am cheap and would like to know if its possible to replace the bearings on the crappy ones thank you
Taryl please do a video on buying v belts for sit down mower the belts dont match the belt. 1 first belt ordered b-85 but measured 88.25 2nd belt ordered b82 measured 84.5 3rd belt ordered b 81 measured 83.25 I extended my belt measuring DEMCO v belt measuring gauge and extended it 10 inches to measure the longer belts and that's what I found, I also measured on outside diameter with 1/2 Stanely power lock tape measure also, the decks have little adj and I also tried the red link belt and the stretch is too great for craftsman gt5000 deck there only good for a fan belt water pump not mower deck . If you go into bearing shop you can measure them but prices are 3-4 times higher NOW DO YOU ORDER BELTS????????????????
My Yard Machine was working fine. Once I replace the deck belt , I saw white smoke coming from the engine pulley. It spins while the engine is engaged and disengage. What could cause it to just spin now?
A friend would say, "you've just weakened the metal by heating it". I would say, "this ain't the space shuttle, knucklehead". Thanks for videos, Taryl!
I got a similar problem... The deck is in highest setting, if I lower it at all it starts to scalp the lawn. Can you make a short and simple video like this one, on this subject (btw, its a snapper). Thanks, Hoss.
Hey teryl I hav a craftsman LT 1000 doing same thing will that work on it to you know the spring connects to a cable and the pulley thanks let me know please
My belt was slipping , I could tell by the way it was free revving at the end of a burnout. So I added some tension and the first test burnout I snapped the input shaft clean off. It was pretty cool.
Tarly I have a 25hp koler command pro series. The engine runs rough especially after it warms up. It’s not keeping much fuel in the filter maybe a 1/4 full or less. Ive changed the pump, cleaned carb etc but noticed oil coming out the valve cover also seems to be a lot of blow by out the valve cover. You think a head gasket is the issue?
If you have Blow-By, yes more likely you have Gasket Problems. If you have Gasket Problems.... You fuel won't get to the pump easily. Your Fuel Pump is working in conjunction with your Engine compression. Low compression = Low fuel.
for a long time I thought those where your real teeth, lol I love your videos, taught me how to adjust my values on my motor, story to long to tell about my lawn mower ha, .. QUESTION__on a troy bilt zero turn, would that spring happen to be on top of the deck, my blade will not kick on after I reverse, if I shut the blade off and back on pull the PTO blade will not turn, try it again on the way to put it up lol and it might kick on??
What if the belt falls off when you don't have the blades engaged? The belt is fine when cutting, but slips off when not in use and I have to keep putting back on. PIA! Thanks!
Great video Tarly as your videos are great for the back yard lawman. As for heating the spring red hot, take and dip in cold water, and it will bring back the tension strength.
I like these little short clips as well as the ones on Sunday's can't get enough of Taryl Fixes All

Great tip Taryl. Thanks for thinking outside the box again and sharing it.
Thank you T-Bird. 😂 You have saved me so many headaches. Love videos and I tell all my friends.

Thanks, my troy bilt is a bronco and the spring hookup is different than yours, but I think it will work just the same.

Another easy but smart fix ;) thanx Taryl!
I'm gaining weight with all these mid-week snacks! Great tip thar, Taryl. WooHoo!

On my craftsman t110 the spring is actuated by a cable. Any help on this fix for that system?
Brilliant great tip. 👍
Thanks Taryl I needed this for my mower.

The lever on the tractor looked bent if you were to straighten it it would not want to pull against the hitch pin as bad either.
If you are referring to the lever that the tension spring (he shortened) is attached to, it's made that way. I have the Troybilt LTX-1842 and it looks just like the lever on the one in his video.
Nice

Very infomative
There he goes again...Taryl is thinking outside the shop !!! He loves his hot-wrench
Good short one Taryl.
Your the best
Whoooooooooooo Hoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
you boys are the best love your shit man
Another case of Hamms.HAHA!!.
Great video Tayrl.
Taryl please do a video on buying v belts for sit down mower the belts dont match the belt.

Great lunch tip! Must be the mower deck went on a budget and had to tighten the belt.
Awesome. Thanks dude!
That will work!
No, no, no........too short, need more Taryl.
NICE TEEF!

You’re the best!!!

Tell him to get out his heat treating stove and we can fix that up in a few hours for him 😆
On the old MTD's it was the other way around. The belt would wear out and would have little tension at the high settings!!! LOL
I got a similar problem...
The deck is in highest setting, if I lower it at all it starts to scalp the lawn.
Can you make a short and simple video like this one, on this subject (btw, its a snapper).
Thanks, Hoss.
I think may you got a ROTOTILLER deck by mistake, but I'm no expert.I'll bet my lunch money Taryl knows.
It’s hard to make money in the small engine game, just goes to show how smart Tim is to have built such a great, thriving business.
Did you try? I used to make good money on repairs. OMG, people were coming to me like crazy. I had to go back to school. :((((
B-b-but Taryl, wont heatin the spring maybe cause it to fail during re-entry into the atmosphere on my mower's next space journey?
Legend!
