      Taryl is like twenty some steps ahead of any high school shop teachers I've ever met. I work off and on as substitute teacher here and not even in my area where I live. I at an inner city school near Reading Pa... I want to tell ya the school board is probably only capable of running a liquor store and that's about the extent of their knowledge. When I said that at meeting about 2-3 years ago it was one of more infamous smart ass comments people still remember me by that zinger because people and parents were spitting coffee all over each other laughing their asses off. People wanted me to run for an open position on their school board. I said within a week I would end up earning a lifes sentence at the state pen....

    I just broke a belt on a brand new mower with less than one hour mowing. Now I know why. I was cutting really thick grass which is now under the cut grass, and then driving into an area that the grass is already cut and cleared. The belt was snapping as Taryl said. I didn't hear it or feel it but it had to be happening if Taryl said so. Now I should be getting a long use from my belts if I cut the grass the right way. Don't cut grass on top of uncut grass. Cut grass onto already cut grass. Now off to the store to get a new belt. Thanks Taryl. We're never too old to learn.

    Right video at the right time. I only have 60 hrs on my John Deere Z930M but I recently seized a blade on an exposed tree root. I smelled burning rubber before I freed up the blade by moving forward. Afterward I heard this slight rattling sound and realized I burned a flat spot in the belt. I considered purchasing an off brand cheaper belt but after careful consideration I purchased the correct deck belt from John Deere. It was expensive but after watching this video I know I made the right decision going with the OEM belt. Thank you.

    Awesome segment!
    Reminded me of my Bolens ST180 hydro that used to go through belts like CRAZY, but only when I would have to raise the deck with the PTO on to get over rises, squirrels, etc. Turns out I had a burr on the bottom of one of the pulleys that would just slice em up if the angle of the belt came close to parallel with the PTO pulley.

    It seems most people do not value a sharp blade when that is where the rubber meets the road on the whole thing. Sharp blades are the number one fundamental in lawn mowing. Great job Taryl on explaining so people can understand whats going on with the mower deck.

    another great video Taryl.
    i was given a Murray 38702x20c recently, and was told it just needed a bushing for a front wheel, i was later told it chewed up belts super fast.
    it's currently stripped down completely, there are four belt guides at the front, and three on the rear, 6 were bent and grooved from rubbing on the pulleys.
    the main frame assembly had patches welded on each side where the trans-axle bolted on, both patches were broken, so it was only held onto the mower with the brace near the brake disc, the reason for the strip down is a dozen cracks, someone way too heavy owned it in the past.
    the deck is pretty bad, but i might be able to repair it, at worst the mower can be a tow vehicle for the firewood cart or the lawn sweeper.
    regards from Australia.

    Also, to help prolong the life of your deck belts engage them at low speed before throttling up to mow. Every time you engage, you get slip. Every slip equals wear. The lower the RPM, the less slip ergo less wear and longer life.

    • @dekoldrick
      @dekoldrick 2 года назад +3

      And don't just slam it into operation. Ease into the engagement so you don't shock the belt having it go from 0 to full speed suddenly.

      @@harryboeckler7198 Examine the deck pulleys. My nephew has a CC and it was throwing the deck belt constantly. He couldn't figure it out. I looked it over and on close inspection, you could see the tension pulleys mount, which should have been designed to have either a thicker threaded mount, or enough room for a nut under it IMO, had worn from the belt tension pulling on it. We had to replace the whole arm and that solved the problem. Part was a 'Idler Arm Bracket'. We also replaced the 'Idler pulley' because the bearing was shot, the Extension spring, belt and belt keeper rod. All those parts including shipping came to $173. It now works like new.

    Good video. You say not to go too fast or mow too low because you're feeding too much grass and you point out to make sure you have the proper clearances. One thing I saw was a bunch of grass by the pulleys and you don't say to clean that grass out of there and another thing that goes along with abuse of the belt would be having a grass build up under the deck that prevents getting rid of the grass quickly and causing the slipping of the belt. Also found a portion of a tarp wrapped around one the the blades on a S160 John Deere.
    Good stuff. Thanks for the info.

    Taryl, I have an old Merry Tiller (1977 I think, from the date code on the engine) with the 5hp Briggs that I took apart to fix a fuel leak on top of the fuel tank. I believe I put the governor linkage back wrong because now it runs fine and throttles up fine until you load it. It has no power under load. Is there a diagram somewhere that you know of that shows the linkages? Or at least a good description. I really am grateful that you do these videos. You don't owe this to anyone, yet you do it. Hey Taryl,
    I have a around a 2003 18 simp regent 38 deck. I bought it for $100 the guy said it just needs a drive belt. Kohler engine runs good. The problem is I don't know what all I have to do to change this belt. It looks complicated n id like to be sure its not the trans locked that caused the belt to snap. The belt is shredded. The guy started to work on by removing a bolt n I have no idea where thats supposed to go. Before I lift this thing with my crane id like to know where to start. I also saw on one of your vids you talked about the parking brake can cause the belt to brake.
    Just was hoping you had 1 of these hanging around that you can do a video on. Thanks
    Oh n your videos are great. You guys are hilarious. You make it fun to work on the junk we have to deal with these days.

    2:30 if the pulleys are really worn they will bite into belts and won’t want to release them. Learned that from an hvac guy that works on electric motors and fans. Wears the out even more and extra load.

    • @KStewart-th4sk
      @KStewart-th4sk 4 года назад

      Don't think i would agree with that description. Worn pulleys would lead to the exact opposite of biting. Slippage, therefore heat, and glazing of the belt would be the result. Worn bad enough, the side of the belt isn't gripping the pulley at all, and could or more likely be riding on the inner circumference of the pulley.

    Good and correct information. Some belts are over $100 and while they do last a long time they eventually wear out and when they do it is time to look at and replace the pulley and idlers. Everyone wants to replace just the belt and then complains that it didn't last as long as the original. Duh. OEM belts usually cost more but you are already at the dealer buying new pulleys and an idler or two Right?

    Taryl, how about horizontal pulley, spindle and motor spindle (whatever its called) alignment? Do things over time slouch slop fall in small increments that you cant really see by eye? Perspective, lay down look at the deck belt. As you raise and lower the deck for cutting heights, would something like i describe be common enough so the belt no longer travels in a clean path across all wheels and then the belt comes off? Hard to explain... hope that kinda does it... My tractor ate 3 belts in a weekend. Ima gonna check the belt wheel surfaces today but it was fine for the first few cuts back in April. I've bought 7 belts this season, some oem, med quality and some cheapo. Is this a thing? or is it something else? Much obliged from Ontario Canada.

    I get the same issues here in the UK people bring their mowers because the belt has snapped or not cutting the grass properly and on inspection pulley's sometimes broken or wrong belts fitted and blades so dull I could slide bare arsed to London on them.

    Earlier the winter I purchased A belt for my lawn tractor snow blower attachment that cost about 170 from the dealer. I than ordered one from A small engine shop that sent me A B114 that was around $20. That cheaper belt which is much stiffer than the oem is A much stiffer belt that keeps coming off.

    I have a Cub Cadet 1554 riding mower with 54 inch cut that is around 15 years old and it is still a pain to change the transmission drive belt. The pulley under the engine on drive shaft is still seized up on the shaft and will not slide down like it is supposed to in order to properly remove and change that belt and bending those guide tabs is not easy. I put a new Cub Cadet brand belt on last year and it shredded this year already and have to change again. I wish that mower had been designed to service more easily. I been laying on my back to do the work under it but might try leaning it over or something.
