  • Does your Craftsman (YT4000) or Husqvarna AYP Lawn Tractor have a loose drive belt, even after replacing it with a new one, and is sluggish or won't drive at all? A new belt, pulleys look good, you just can't seem to figure out what the problem is? In the video at 8:27 where I use the blower is VERY important, this will also cause the clutch / brake to not fully engage the drive belt due to the grass and dirt build up.
This repair works on riding mowers brands like.... Cub Cadet John Deere MTD AYP Husqvarna Poulan Pro Murray Troy Bilt Craftsman Honda Toro Snapper and many more.

That Forward/Reverse control is so much better than the pedals. Thank whiners for the pedals. Great belt guard on that model. Great hoist too.

My son in law just fixed the almost same model mower for me. He found it on Facebook for free. It does just about the same thing so I’m going to see if it’s this problem and just needs to be cleaned out. Maybe my son in law missed that. Crossing my fingers.

Great video! I went and bought a Big Red chain hoist for $50, ordered a replacement belt for $18, and installed it this afternoon. Much better than crawling under a dirty old mower to struggle with the belt replacement. Saved a ton of money doing the repair myself (with your guidance) AND walked away with a new tool. Blew the mower out with my compressor. Only problem now is when I take my foot off the brake, the darn thing wheelies! Raced it up a couple of hills and it's like the mower has been reborn. THANK YOU!

I have a Murry, you can change the belt without taking the steering shaft out, but frankly, it's just as easy to pull the shaft to change the ground drive belt.

I had the same problem with the used Craftman I purchased. First the drive belt measured 7/16" width instead of the 1/2" specified. It still was not quite right so I looked around and found some trash packed in under the clutch peddle linkage that kept the drive belt from fully engaging. A second problem I had was the blade belt. I measured it too and it was 7/16" wide not the 1/2" specified. New belt improved it, but not totally. It is partly the design of this section. The belt as it is pulled by the engine goes around a stationary idler and then on the pully for the left of othe operator the belt is engaging half of the circumference of the blade pulley. The belt is engaging about 1/3 the circumference of the blade pully to the driver's right. There is a spring loaded pully to tighten the belt as it comes from the engine. If you are multching as I do 99% of the time it is easy to go too fast causing the right hafe of the deck to leave a lot of trash. I see two factors here at work. One is that the left blade is shuving a fair about of clipping to the left blade. Two is that the belt is not getting enough traction on the pulley. I have noticed that if you listen and your ground speed is too fast that you will notice a bell sound from time to time. If it sounds like you are grinding up twigs, you are really going too fast!

I made my rider start pulling good by squirting gas on the spinning belts. I have to do that every time I cut grass now. Never put belt dressing on your riding mower belts. Makes them slip. It's like coating them with oil.
