I believe it may actually be your starter not your ignition switch... Sometimes the starter gets "stuck". Shorting the starter like you did to turn it over probably unstuck it. I've had a Z425 since 2006.. It's a great machine. Some additional things that'll keep it from starting are: Dead Battery (Duh)... The parking brake is NOT set. The PTO switch is pulled (blades are on). Battery terminals / wire connection can be dirty or just plain loose going to and from the battery and starter. The safety switches (there are two) connected to the steering handles may be worn off and not being compressed properly (pushed in) when steering handles are spread. Engine will not start if the machine thinks the steering handles are not spread.. My safety switches wore out a long time ago and have to be "jimmied" in order to start the machine... this actually prevented it from being stolen once.. Thanks for the video..
You absolutely nailed it! I have the 445 ( old school serial number 60000 up from dealer not big box), and it’s such a good cutting unit I hate to let it go. I’m wondering if it is my neutral safety switches on each arm!! I replaced parking brake switch, solenoid. The fuse box and fuses, but don’t remember if there’s a gap between f2 and f3 in the fuse panel or if they’re all connected at the base f1-f4? My starter I tested with a jump box and the damn thing nearly jumped off the bench it cranked so hard! I just don’t get why I’m not gettihg power from the solenoid positive post thru ti the starter cable post. I mistakenly touched the two and it started right up. I’m pretty darned frustrated right now man
I have a Z445 and most often than not it will not start, no clicking, no nothing…….. Then I discovered that at the same time you turn you ignition on, you wiggle the parking brake handle…….. Bang it starts…….. FYI
Well there could be several things -not to mention the compression cam on the inside of the engine, common to break off. BUT back to the subject here,Yes I replaced my switch just because it is rusty and gunked up, and I tested my solenoid with direct 12V short wires to battery and Solenoid clicking like all get out so probably wasn't the Solenoid -doing a direct cable to starter right now. I am not getting 12 V on the Green and White wire the run 'to the' solenoid that energizes the coil inside Solenoid. So what Im trying to find out, does the 2 coil wire go thru the fuse panel first? I do not have the 'Start Fuse' but the sticker on the mower shows one. Did it fall out or smthng -IDK? I looked thru all my manuals that came with the Z425 and there IS NOT one thing on the fuse panel, fuses or etc. How cheap can they get? So Im off to JD store tomorrow to ask for a Start Fuse ( should be 25 A) , taking my manual , and asking them for a wiring schematic mainly to Fuse Panel. I had to replace my Intek engine at 100 hours, overheated plus sucked in a bunch of sand ruined the cylinder walls. I got a 25 hp commercial Vanguard,
We replaced Battery in our EZTrac Z425 Zero turn and now when we take the parking brake off, the mower dies. What did we possibly "hit" or disrupt that would make it do this all of a sudden?
Make sure pto is off, handles are pulled out...if those are checked then the seat sensor I showed in the video could be bad, that would make it turn off. You could try the paper clip trick I mentioned in the video to test that
JD Z535R, starter engages and runs but only while key is set to start, i.e. starter has to be constantly in the start position or it auto dies. Complete service as scheduled was just done, new battery and battery terminals are all cleaned. Any advice? Or more info needed? Tyvm in advance.
Standing behind and facing the mower if yours is same model, there’s a wire to the left of the engine that needs to be pulled into the neutral position. Then you can push...should be able to Google that too if can’t find it
There’s 2 hydraulic release pins on each hydraulic pump. Turn counter clock wise to free it up and look at manual to turn back properly so iuour steering is even. Not fun when they out of whack
Start with the battery, use charger when starting, then go from there. If any engine doesn’t turn over the battery is the first thing to check. Lord’s blessings.
I have the same problem with my mower I can’t get it to start .. so I jumpstart it an when it turns on the blades automatically turn on as well what could be the issue

Well said. Hopefully your insights will help someone.

There is a display: no lights, no crank with key, crank w/12v to starter--> key switch is bad. New switch: $$30.00

What’s wrong with the mower it runs fine but it doesn’t start wen it hot

Thank you amen my brother.
Thanks...now can start troubleshooting
Thank you. I was the ignition switch for me
You’re welcome. Glad it helped.
Thanks for the video...God bless you!!
You’re welcome. God (Jesus) bless you as well! Romans 10:9.

what if you've ran the mower out of gas and can't seem to get it restarted. I wouldn't think it would be very hard?
This is the high octane content I live for. Truly a masterpiece deserving of the 12K views.

Sorry I didn’t respond. Did you get it figured out?
Probably an ignition switch issue. A year later.
AND... how do I disengage the thing to push the mower back into the garage?

Hopefully this is my issue. I’m a lady so hope this is as easy for me. Didn’t know exactly what you did with the bolt but hopefully won’t need to.

Just for the record a ignition switch is 50.00. Sucks.

I’d check the yellow knob that engages the mower. Sounds like this isn’t switching off when it should. Hope it works.
The best part of this video was “I’m a grown adult, I can handle it”. Can I quote you on that?
Yes, you may! Was a spontaneous comment...I forgot I said that. Free people do free things. Glad you enjoy the content.
