    T, I discovered something on my own today and thought about you immediately. Of all the RUclips channels I watch (dozens), yours has shown the tiny movement of the exhaust valve as it is opened by a cam lobe for compression release more often than any other channel.
    It’s a difficult thing to show and see on camera.
    I’m currently working on a B&S flathead engine that threw its intake valve seat. As I was removing both valves and springs and rotating the crank I realized I was seeing the exhaust tappet move a smaller distance and then a larger distance. I knew what that was immediately. I rotated the crank several times with a finger on the end of the tappet and it was then very easy to feel and see when the release was activated. I then did it some more times and discovered that the release is activated approximately 360 degrees from the regular valve opening.
    For a relative newbie to the workings of an engine this was really neat and a revelation. 😁🔧👍
    If you happen to be doing a valve job on a flathead sometime this might be another way to show viewers how this works.

    Hey T-bone, my thought was it's most likely the rubber tip on the anti-backfire solenoid. In that style solenoid, the rubber tip comes loose. Then gets stuck in the up position. Restricting the fuel flow. The solenoid, without this rubber tip feature, is a much better design. Better yet, take some side cutters & clip the pin. Bypassing the solenoid all together.

    Forgive me for saying but I was taught that an engine needs 4 things to run…fuel, spark, compression, and also timing. If you have a sheared key, a broken timing gear, or bad cam it ain’t gonna start. Just my 2 cents worth. You’ve probably forgotten more than I’ll ever know. Love watching your videos. It’s like sitting there watching and listening to my uncle work on small engines.

    • @hester781
      @hester781 10 месяцев назад +4

      I don’t think you’re wrong, however I was taught that in the diagnostic end of the categories of fuel spark compression each has its own subdivision of specifics. Like for instance timing is actually related to all three categories as it can affect each system differently. So it’s more of a fundamental starting point than an absolute 👍🏻

    • @Rein_Ciarfella
      @Rein_Ciarfella 10 месяцев назад +5

      5 things - FACTS - Fuel, Air, Compression, Timing, Spark!!!
      Whenever I’m diagnosing I keep those at the forefront of my mind so I cover all the bases.
      Yes, JD, some can be sub-categories or ancillary, like exhaust is ancillary to Air/intake. Lack of either will cause one condition.
      I’m just saying keeping FACTS in mind all the time will avoid missing critical details which are easy to forget or overlook.

    Also take a bread wrap tie, strip, bend the end 90º leave just a short part past the bend 1/8 - 1/4 inch. Stick wire in the tiny jet holes which are visible inside the throat near the throttle plate, move throttle plate as necessary to access the holes. Older carburetor, remove adjustment screws, taking note of where they were set AND jab wire through the holes from that side, & spray out with carburetor cleaner. I have seen cases where just cleaning out the adjustment screw holes got the engine running again.

    W ell done TBone. Thanks. Great video and teaching approach. Is there a Husqvarna thread? My yth24v briggs 44R877 starts up runs awhile and then Peter's out. Air filter, check. Fuel, check. Spark, definitely. It slows and then revs, then dies. Hmm. If there's a thread with others experiencing that and problem solved, I'd listen. In the meantime, I'll take apart and clean the carb.

    I want to THANK YOU! AT 16. I got a 79' Z28 with an engine that had been swapped for a "corvette" (blah blah - I just wanted wheels.. It had been abused before it discovered my lead foot.. Rebuilt that engine after a cracked head on day 2... Long and short.. For every hour I drove it, I worked on it for a legit 3 hours.. Bloody knuckles and curse words that hurt so bad, they could be unrecognizable.. I've full built and short block swapped (and everything inbetween).. I never did a transmission repair, but lord knows all these decades later, with Suncoast rebuilds of Dodge Trashmissions on my 06 fully built midlife crisis.. ONE THING.. I KNOW and APPRECIATE!!!! Trial and error sucks... 51 now.. I go to RUclips on father's day to fix his mower and troubleshoot.. GOT IT.. Sparks alive and sow is the mower.. 2 acres of hot texas h3ll (hopefully before he wakes up), and all is good! He's a combat vet from nam 68'.. Taught me about mechanics and all of the above when I didn't know jack.. Being able to fix this Husqvarna 48 w/ same engine, and help him do what is now very hard for him to do is just awesome! I truly thank you for this video.. HOPE not to need your help again, but I am fully subbing up, liking, and I'm sure (imagine that - he has a bunch of relics he'd love to push.. (No chainsaws for him.. But, I need to fix his STIHL.. ;). Happy Father's day to you! Blood or by way of mentoring.. Done both!
