Just want to say thank you for highlighting this simple fix. After my dad died last year, I’ve had to try to fill his “fix anything” shoes. Your video helped me get my mom’s lawn tractor going again. She was thrilled and relieved. Thanks again for your video

This was the exact problem I had. After seeing your video I now know why they tell you to always park mower with brake on. It takes tension off the drive belt so it will not stretch as much. I also found that after cleaning grass and dirt from underneath the bar hanging down on the brake I had a small amount of free play on the pedal when it is not engaged. So if you you find no free play then you probably have this problem. I had already taken the pins out of the hanging bars on both sides of the deck and the rod on the front of the deck before I found this video. I then slid the deck towards the side with the discharge chute and did not have to remove deck belt tensioner cable to get enough room to clean out the brake area. Great video, thank you so much...

DUDE!! 3 years after you made this video Thanks a lot!! I just came in from the test drive and this fixed my problem, my mower suddenly wouldn't go up hills, I thought for sure it was the trans going out and after watching several videos on how to change the fluid I stumbled across your video. No way it's that easy, I never get lucky with this stuff but sure enough even though I blow the grass and dirt off of every time I use it junk was caked on up in that area causing the pedal to not release all of the way. THANKS!!!

Changed the drive belt. Less slippage but by the end of mowing, it was barely making it up hills. Found this video and thought it wasn’t likely to work because I pressure wash after each mow. Found lots of hard clumps in there but not right under the brake stop. But sure enough, it worked!! The mower pulls uphills it never has before! Thanks for taking the time to make this video. You saved me a couple $k.

Thanks so much for posting this. While my new belt was on order, I saw this and went out to clear out nearly a bale of grass out of that area. A screwdriver and air gun got it all cleaned out, and she gained nearly all power back. It would hardly climb an incline in the middle of the yard it was so bad. I assumed the belt had stretched. I may still swap it, when the belt comes in. But for now, it will go on a hook for when the first truly fails. Thanks again!

Last year we got a new Craftsman T260 50" cut and 2 weeks ago a used LT2000 and I am learning that these lawn tractors can be a pain in the a** to keep running and driving properly..I just replaced the 2 spindles and blades on the LT2000 and need to look at the transmission drive belt(s) and actually the T260..I always blow them out with the air compressor and change oil and air filter when needed but haven't looked at the drive belts...its videos like these that have helped me realize theres more to maintain if I want to keep from having to buy new equipment all the time..especially at todays prices.

Yup I’ve seen this happen a few times mostly on Craftsman riders and figured it out on my own same way you did. People like to mow over all kinds of junk and get crap packed up tight in there and the brake can’t completely release. I’ve actually had people argue with me because they didn’t believe the packed debris was the issue.

Yeah, I typically like to blow them off with either a blower, or compressed air vs. water as places like this will just get more compacted if you don't hit it just right with the water. Air seems to get more out without direct placement. A little maintenance can go a long way.

Wish I'd seen this before I spent 2 days replacing the drive belt and cleaning all of the junk out from under / in my tractor. ;) My old belt was a few years old... and it had stretched a bit... so it probably needed to be replaced... but it might have made it another season if I had just cleaned out all the accumulated crap from underneath the mower first. I'll remember this for the next time my drive belt starts slipping again.
