Easily replace deck belt (without removing the deck), Troy-Bilt riding mower

  • I show you how to easily change the deck belt on your Troy-Bilt Bronco riding mower without removing the deck. This is the belt that controls the blades. The belt on this mower had been installed incorrectly so I didn't have to initially loosen the idler pullies--but if your belt is intact you probably will to get the old belt off. This is the same process for most riding mowers.
    Lawn Mower Model 13WV78KS011
    belt part number is 954-04060b

    This was the best video ever. So very detailed I'm a 63 year old woman. Was having trouble getting it back on the pulley because of the guide. Okay, here's another trick That helped me... Use electrical tape to hold screws in the socket and on front pulley guide arm I used duct tape on the side you just stick in to keep that booger attached! Just finished mowing. Thanks Again!

    • @GiordanosGarage
      @GiordanosGarage  Год назад +3

      Some machines the guard is a pretty thin/flexible piece of metal you can easily bend out of the way but on this Troy-Bilt I think it's easier to loosen the idler pulley

      I actually got it! Put the crescent wrench on bottom of the tension pulley & then the socket wrench (with a breaker bar) and loosened the pulley enough to slip it on. 🙌 I'm a 105lb women who feels invincible with the recent knowledge of a breaker bar. 😂 Well, a pipe actually but, it makes me able to remove bolts I'd normal get frustrated & give up. It still took me almost 2 hours. 😂😂😂

    I liked it but you will have to remove deck on most models to get the blade guards loose. Slipping your tools under are not so easy to loosen the nut and it needs to be torques back on. It really only a couple pins to drop and one cable to release tension. Changing the blades raising the deck and mower like he did makes them easier.

    OMG, I borrowed my cousin lawnmower today which I have for little of the summer. Well, today I was cutting and went to put turn the blade back on and noticed it wasn't engaging. I moved the lawnmower and noticed a piece of metal in the grass. Well, now I know what that piece is just from the beginning of your video you showed this is the bracket. I'm puzzled as to how that bracket just fell off, I didn't hit anything. It covers the belt and I noticed the belt has come off a little so I think it just needs to be tighten. Now, just waiting for my mechanic cousin to put it back on. Thanks your video solved my problem had no idea where the metal piece came from.

    Thanks for posting I would do deck belts in cuting tall grass the blade would get stuck in the grass and the engin drive pully would burn out or wear out a 8 inch of the drive belt then the deck belt would be out of balance So I just duck tape the belt to restor the blance till I had time to replace the belt. I mostly did this with the dect belt Because I had to take the whole deck off to change the deck belt , I have a Rover rancher 38 inch, its all most the exact same mower Mine to Has only a single belt pulley as well next time this will save me time .

    Thank you for your video Giordano, I have a question, maybe you can help me, Coincidentally, I recently changed the drive belt and I don't know if that will be the cause of my problem, I have a Troy bilt pony (2011), now I can only control the speed with the throttle lever, even when I put it in rabbit mode the motor goes at high rpm, but the ground speed is about half the normal speed; the (yellow on mine) speed control lever doesn’t work, it goes up and down without locking the notches, offers no resistance and does nothing. (however, the engaging of the parking brake action works fine). I opened up the mower and saw the yellow speed control lever attached to a connecting rod which is attached down there to the cupped metal piece in the correct position as the new Troy Bilt Pony I saw yesterday at Home Depot, but besides allowing to be put in in park position, I don’t see it attached to anything else, is it right? How does it regulate the speed if it is not connected to anything else? Thank you in advance.

      Hi, thanks-you can do it!! I did lower it all the way to the bottom--i don't think putting it on blocks will get you much lower. The deck arms are only so long-if you need more room you might just have to take the deck off entirely.

    Remove the deck, do it right. Clean the deck, check all pullies. Replace as needed. Wire brush or sand off any rust, spray paint areas needed. Put belts on the deck, roll back under the mower, attach belt and reinstall hanger hardware. Sharpen/balance or replace blades. It's not all that bad.

    I have a nearly identical Troy Bilt. I loaned it to my mother so she could cut her neighbor's yard. At some point she hit something hard enough to completely break one of the belt guards off. Since it threw the belt and the belt was in rough shape, I decided to replace it. I replaced the belt and installed a new belt guard. Since the replacement, I cannot get enough tension to keep the belt in place. The routing is correct and nothing else appears to be damaged, but the belt will come off after a couple of passes. Thankfully, I have plenty of other riding mowers, but I would love to get this one into good enough condition to sell before Spring is over. Is there anything that I could be missing?

    We have the same mower and for 6 yrs the belt has continued so slip off the pulley on the right side. Any suggestions? Even took it to the dealer. They fixed it but happened again after 6th or so use. Very frustrating!!

      Same thing has been happening to mine! I have taken my deck off for some other work and it seems like perhaps the belt guide shifted a bit (should be closer to the front of the mower instead of the back). I haven't finished the other work so I haven't tested my theory yet.

    I’ve noticed my deck doesn’t engage as fast as it used to when I push the mow lever forward. Do you think the reason for that would be a loose belt?

      I had this problem today blade would no longer engage, later I noticed the belt is off at the front. That bracket he showed in the front fell off and I think this made the belt loose.
