The Matt Damon gag was actually an inside joke between the creators, when they ordered the puppet they couldn't stop laughing at how stupid it looked, so that's the reason why he only says "Matt Damon!"
Just answered a decades long question for me, thanks! I don’t know why but that shit has always cracked me up as much as anything else in the movie.
it`s also the truth of how the millionaire Adult Pretender degenrates think they are better than us, while in the background be a lot worse.
@@TheCentralScrutinizerAgain
Stop crying. People say what they think when asked. I’m sure you’re telling people what you think is best. Just don’t listen to them if you disagree, but the complaining about famous people speaking their minds is ridiculous.
"he's the best martial arts expert Detroit has to offer" is an amazing throw-away line
The Pearl harbour song is actually hysterical to me “I need you more than Ben Affleck needs acting school, he was terrible in that film” 😂
I will sing it to my friends at random intervals, normally that line specifically
@@Icetemplar Same. I used to sing it to an ex-GF - “Pearl Harbour sucked… and I miss you!”
"How are you gonna get into the car without the strings?"
You know... in all the years I've loved this movie... I never thought of that.
You made me spit out my pizza!!
"I may need subtitles, I don't know what durka durka means"
I love your innocence!! Never change my man!
I had to google it; I'm Canadian so yeah...we don't use that up here.
Durka durka jihad durka
Lol
This Movie came out a Year before RUclips did. This movie Satires the 2001-2004 America Vibe perfectly lol
Durka durka, Mohammed jihad
I love how serious he takes so much of it. Like the "Freedom Isn't Free" song. Like "Yup freedom aint free yal" lol good on ya Leo.
Freedom isn't free, is such a nice touch of satire that he doesn't seem to understand the point of it :D
To be fair though, there is a hefty fukin fee.
@@metalmayhem3622 That is also true :)
Some of this movie is just so deep though lol
@@metalmayhem3622 Fun fact: A buck Oh Five in 2003 dollars is worth approximately $1.57 today
South Park never takes prisoners and skewers every side of the political and social spectrum. Their no holds barred approach and "screw you guys" attitude make them the legends of comedy they are.
South Park kinda slipped during 2012 and on I think he who shall not be named really threw them for a loop
Much like Seth McFarlane and the Family Guy writers
@@chrisofstars I disagree. Mr garrison as trump is some of my favorite South Park
So i heard that the whole "Matt Damon" gag is like an inside joke they had on set that they just kept in the film. Apparently, when Matt and Tray saw the puppet for Matt Damon, they thought it looked derpy, so derpy that they thought the only thing that puppet could say is his "Matt Damon" in a derpy voice and nothing else.
I also heard that actual Matt Damon thought the puppet was so funny that he tried to get it after the movie came out. Though i'm not sure he actually did.
Matt Damon took it in stride. Sean Penn infamously did that I WENT TO IRAQ YOU KNOW.
Movie still holds up remarkably well too. Still relevant in all the right ways
That satirical puppet movie is so much closer to reality than 2021 it is truly scary.
@Nada Gain they can’t stand both extremes of the spectrum. They are square in the middle. They can’t stand the left a little more but, they hold a mirror up to society. We’re all in this country together.
This movie is stupid. The problems today are very obvious and the problems always have been. Stop trying to push the dumbest and one of the funniest movies up to a philosophical pedestal, it's hilariously dumb. Just laugh at the movie and deal with the problem instead of trying to seem clever by realising something that doesn't exist. "This movie tackles this problem" NO IT DOESN'T, MOVIES DOESN'T TACKLE SHIT. You should deal with problems, not movies. When did entertainment become the frontline of handling issues? It's literally distractions. Just have some fun with movies then move on the real shit, it's not the same thing. If this movie is needed to tell you whats wrong, you are the wrong.

The “AIDS” musical was making fun of the musical “Rent”
Yeah and very obviously too 😂 calling it Lease and everything 😂
The 1st time I heard that song I think I laughed for 10 minutes. I’d seen Rent just a few weeks before, so it really resonated🤣
My friends and i saw this movie when we were only 13, in '03 or '04. I laughed my ass off at this scene, but it became much funnier when i realized i was the only one who got the joke and knew what Rent was and what it was about.
@@NikkieTwix omg how tf I miss that after all of these years 😂
True story:
My mom and dad took me to see this movie when it released in theaters in 2004. Thing is I'm born in 1997 so I was 7 years old ... My dad honestly had no idea he thought it was a family movie because the characters are puppets, apparently he got all kinds of dirty looks when people saw us.
I took my kid too who was 6. In my defense I was home on leave from the war in Houston to see for 18 days. I caught them looks too
Question to both of you: did you watch it til the end? 😁 And if so, how (in retrospect) hilarious was the discussion with your parents/kids afterwards?
I was around 13 when it came out and my parents were gladly pretty much oblivious to what I watched in the theater and this one was one of those movies that a wannabe-edgy 90's group of teens absolutely needed to see, of course.
@@ichmeiner4531 Oh man I do wish I remembered it this much but I really don't. What I do know is that we left at the puke scene LMAO
I fell asleep watching this and the kiddos came in the room and watched it. When my fiancee got home they were sitting there watching the bar scene before the puking. Needless to say I heard about it the next morning.
I never understood the whole "going into a random movie with a minor" stories. Like how shit parents can people be? 😅
This movie was WAY AHEAD of it's time exposing Hollywood celebrities like this xD
Watching someone who has NO idea about what Team America is watching it for the first time has been the BEST THING EVER!
Love the threads Leo, keep flashin' that fresh mah niggah ❤
Lol you're fuckn cool
I had to google it.
Never heard of it either
Lol I had the opportunity last year with a friend who'd never seen it and it was a fantastic time! The reaction went from "What the hell is this? Is this for real?" to "I love this movie!" and finally "That was the dumbest most magical thing I've ever seen and I love it!" 😂
This movie was written and directed by the South Park guys. Knowing this, it makes perfect sense. It is also the most epic puppet project ever. CGI was kept to a bare minimum, so all the action scenes were done using miniatures and scale models. Plus the marionettes each had multiple operators, and finding room for everyone was a big challenge.
Durka durka muhammed jyhad
Not really happy time murders was better lol
Somewhat random, but I've always highly preferred real props over CGI.
For some reason, I feel more immersed in the movie when I can tell that the object is real. Even if the prop doesn't look all that great. There's something about CGI that makes it hard for me to get immersed into movies with them. That's partially why I mostly prefer movies made before the 2000's.
You can see why they considered season 8 of South Park their least favorite season ever for some time after, because they worked on its production at the same time as _this_ movie's production.
Yeah, and they will never do it again on the count of how much work it was. According to both of them in an interview. But turned out brilliantly anyways✌
I'd rather watch Southpark than this garbage though. lol
The musical show in which Gary was singing the "Everyone Has AIDS" number, was "Lease", a parody of the real Broadway smash hit "Rent". Rent was about bohemian groups in NYC, one of whom did indeed die from AIDS. It's based on "La Boheme" a famous opera by Puccini.
19:54 "I gotta get me some strings"
- The bloody funniest thing I've heard somebody say in a some time... and just too true as well. Genuinely and sincerely, laughing out loud.
"This dude is throwing up inspirationally."
My favorite scene. It just keeps going and going. 🤣🤣🤣
It’s never not funny
It's really rather reminiscent of the scene in Blazing Saddles where the...
Well, it shouldn't be too hard to guess which one I mean. 😏 😁
Remembering watching this as a kid and literally saying
"those are some f**ked up puppets."
The Matt Damon puppet was literally f'd up, that's why he only says his name. It came from the manufacturer a bit melted or whatever, looking like it had Down Syndrome, so Matt and Trey ran with it. The real Matt Damon was confused why he was portrayed in such a way, but it was literally just them playing with a melted puppet and had nothing to do with Matt himself. Lol.
ruclips.net/video/MTmIfng-TUE/видео.html

@@vovindequasahi offensive doesn't mean that it can't be funny when put in the right frame. This movie is the perfect example, it just makes fun in the most exaggerated ways, but of everyone. No one's excluded from being portrayed in the most stereotypical, hilarious form possible. I sure laughed my ass off to that movie, but I don't think I'd go around and quote it without clarifying the context.

So many lines and scenes in this movie that are just pure comedy gold.
Such an underrated movie. There are so many levels of jokes in this, it honestly take multiple viewings to fully see just how funny (and brilliant) this film is. Trey and Matt totally hit it out of the park with this film.

As an artist / architect, someone spent some serious time on that sketch! That’s not one of those traced and printed programs , thst was done by hand. Awesome!
The same way 'Scary Movie' spoofed Horror films, 'Team America World Police' spoofed action films... with puppets.
And it is probably the best action spoof ever made!
Years ago, there was a kids show called " The Thunderbirds". They were Puppets that did basically the same things, only it was the rated G version.
Yes do thundeebirds now 👍
I'm 51 and Thunderbirds was still in syndication when I was 5-7 years old. I even had one of the Dinky brand toys. Awesome memories.
This movie was deliberately spoofing Thunderbirds
Hell yea Thunderbirds are GO! Used to watch those when I was in Indian Guides as a kid in the 70’s
Thunderbirds are GO. Great series as a kid.
Ah Team America. This movie is a classic! 😆 Haven't watched it in years.
Leo you have to go find the unrated version of this just for the puppet sex scene alone. You'll see some of the freakiest and kinkiest stuff you may not no even exsists.
he did see it, but had to blur it out of course.
I know but in the unrated version it gets into some serious kink. I'll leave it at that.
The Foley artists put in the sound of wood clanking on wood in that scene. It's usually drowned out by audience laughter.
@@edminchau811 I've watched this film lots of times but never noticed the clanking sound because I've always been laughing so loud. Just going to watch it now.
“I gotta get me some strings attached.” 😂😂😂😂 Bruh I’m dying
I remember seeing this movie when it first came to the theaters opening night. Parents with their kids grabbed them up and we’re running out in the first 3 minutes! It was epic!
Saw the same thing happen, it's like they just saw puppets amd assumed it was for kids.
“He’s gotta teach me some of those moves. I think it’s the strings. I gotta get me some strings attached”

You just described a sex swing homie. Do it up.
love the reaction! my dad was actually one of the special effects coordinators on this film. I got to be on set for a few scenes. keep up the great work!
What’s even more hilarious about team America is how Matt and Trey used the entire premise of the movie to satire actors who think they can save the entire world with their acting and how ridiculous they all are. Genius satirists.

This movie has a special place with me in that it was the last movie I saw with my best friend before he died. Funniest movie I've ever seen in theatres
Believe me, this movie almost killed Matt and Trey, but it’s a great movie and it was made between the two runs of the greatest season of South Park - season 8. Matt and Trey do their best work under stress.
Back in the early-mid 60's there were 3 shows featuring puppets like these. Sorta. It was the 60's and very 'G' rated. If you get a chance, they're a fun watch. Look for Stingray, Thunderbirds and Fireball. Stingray and Thunderbirds were the most popular.
Don't forget captain Scarlet
“Freedom costs a buck-o-fiiiiiive!”
The backup singer saying "Heeeeee died of Aiiiidddssss." Gets me every time lol
I remember when a reporter asked Matt and Tre why they used puppets and the response was a flat "because we hate actors. They're the most annoying people in the world" I was a lifelong fan instantly...they just burned every bridge in Hollywood with a smile ,wave, and a howdoyoudo 👏👏👏👏👏
