Yeah... I don't know... but it is like if some lights flicker somewhere during a snowstorm, Jim will turn around and say: "Oh, what was that? ... Wait, Pederah, did you see that? Thundersnow, baby, I think that was it...!" ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I believe that electrified railways can also cause strong flashes similar to lightning. ...
Jim Cantore has an approach to his job that reminds me of a kids fascination with sharks or dinosaurs. Keep it up Jim! we all watch the weather channel because of you!
I remember watching it live and learning the term "thundersnow" from this incident. Then not a week later while outside with friends when it was snowing, it happened to us and we all got crazy excited about it. Thundersnow for lyfe :)
I've experienced thundersnow a couple of times, and I have to say it's pretty insane when it happens. The snow just falls so ridiculously hard, you just have to take a step back and watch in awe.
i remember watching this live when it happened i was in 3rd grade we were off from school for a few days from that storm in new jersey and that whole winter was crazy we got alot of snow
In December 2009 here in the UK I was clearing snow off my car when a bolt of lightning shot across the sky and the thunder was very loud. It scared me to death because it was so close so decided to sit in my car and watch it for a moment. I have seen this happen a few times during winter snow here in the UK.
I remember this well, I was born in Worcester. We got punished this winter too (some of the highest accumulations I've ever seen, with lots of roof collapses in the area). There were no places left to dump the snow and it kept piling on (my back hurts just thinking about all the shoveling I did). Lots of two-lane roads were only wide enough for a single car.
From the lightning strike and the thunder I witnessed in that video, I can guess how much elevated CAPE (MLCAPE) and mid-level lapse rates were. A high number of either one or both means there is enough lifting (or "omega") and instability to produce enough separation charges in the atmosphere in the snowstorm clouds, which in turn, can set off lightning strikes. MLCAPE may have reached 400-450 j/kg, and the mid-level lapse rates may have reached as high as 7.0 to 7.5 c/km.
Love Jim Cantore ... although ... living in South Florida, during hurricane season, we say "if you see Jim Cantore in your neighborhood, it's time to get out."
Our area in Virginia had thundersnow yesterday afternoon. My husband and I thought it was really weird, but had never heart the term "thundersnow" until our local weather forecast came on the news later. Apparently, most people hadn't, as many of my facebook friends were talking about it last night.
Thunder-snow is very rare. This other guy says it happens all the time but it's really not that common. Many people think that snow storms never have lightning. But just to give you a number thunder-snow happens on average 6 times a year in the u.s. I live in Mass and I've only seen it 3 times in my lifetime and will probably see it tonight lol
Ever seen thunder and lightning with freezing rain? I remember one time in Pennsylvania in January in some year I forgot. 2 inches of ice with lightning is insanity.
i never heard thunder during snow before, but i heard all about thundersnow happening in other states until last night between the hr of 1am-2am on feb 16 2010 here in Queens, NY and now i'm a believer of Meteorological term thundersnow
Yes! The Blizzard of 96. That storm was unbelievable. I was 10 when we got that here in NJ. School was closed for the entire week straight and our cat Skittles got lost in the storm. Thank God he made his way back home a few days later. Also, my oldest niece was born two months after the blizzard, in March of '96.
While we don't experience many blizzards in Alabama, the ones we have had are usually accompanied by thunder snow and lightning. The March '93 storm that pretty much covered everybody east of the Mississippi River, had plenty of it.
First snow of the winter in the North East October 29, 2011, and he did the same exact thing again. I saw it live on the weather channel, and thought whoa that guy looks alot like the guy from youtube who did the same thing, and turns out it is the same guy. All these years later, and he still has the same reaction. First was December 7, 1996 Second was December 18, 1998 Third was February 1, 2011 and now his Fourth October 29, 2011 all on video.
Is thunder-snow some sort of extremely rare phenomenon? One would think that it happens in the rain, then it would be no big deal in the snow. By Jim Cantore's reaction, it must be really rare......
@skotnoctis I just did too about an hour ago but was snowing lightly and I did see lighting and heard thunder. I thought somebody was using their plow until I saw lighting. And was AWESOME!!
@thatpersonxx yes i live in maryland i dont hear any now the snow started around 11:30 today but know its 12:30 at night(saturday morning) i only see strong winds but no thunder or lightning...but maybe there might be some later on today...i am realy scared !!
actually it has.. i experienced it myself here in grimsby, england where i live! it was on november 29th 2010, me and my friends were havin a snowball fight in my garden, england was absolutely covered in snow at the time, one of the best winters weve had in years :) at first none of us had any idea it was lightning... thought it was someone takin pictures of somethin, or a car flashin its lights, then all of a sudden there was a big flash and a muffled rumble of thunder... couldnt believe it :o
Yeah, but they're not near as frequent as you get them of course. We got about 3" back in January but it all melted just a few hours later. That's usually how it happens here when we do get snow. But, March of '93 was like a catastrophe for us. It iced over first , then snowed for almost 24 hrs. Was on the ground for 4 days and shut the town down because there were no plows and no chains for tires anywhere.
I am afraid of rain-based thunderstorms...but when you get snow punctuated by lightning and thunder....this is even worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am facing the new weather reality that sometimes comes with snowstorms...thunder-snowstorms, or thundersnow for short.
Jim Cantore will always find thundersnow wherever he goes. #ThundersnowMagnet
Yeah... I don't know... but it is like if some lights flicker somewhere during a snowstorm, Jim will turn around and say: "Oh, what was that? ... Wait, Pederah, did you see that? Thundersnow, baby, I think that was it...!"

@@JGLewis-jn2km then explain the ensuing thunderclap
@@slayer18726 You got me on that.... I used to live near a railway into N.Y.C. and such lightning flashes would occur though.
@@JGLewis-jn2km oh ok I can see what you're saying
Cuntore is a grandstanding CLOWN 🤡
I remember watching this live with my father. There’s nothing better than his coverage of a solid winter storm
Can’t believe this was 24 years ago but his reactions are beyond hilarious. 😂😂
Thundersnow is always stalking Jim Cantore! Love it! :)
This is hysterical. His reaction is priceless! Heard my first thundersnow this year....
His expression is the best EVER!!! Never thought I would ever hear a weatherman ask if that was lightning! Priceless.
Jim Cantore has an approach to his job that reminds me of a kids fascination with sharks or dinosaurs. Keep it up Jim! we all watch the weather channel because of you!
So this is where it all began. "Thundersnow... Oh baby...!"
I remember watching it live and learning the term "thundersnow" from this incident. Then not a week later while outside with friends when it was snowing, it happened to us and we all got crazy excited about it. Thundersnow for lyfe :)
The Can man at his finest.

I like that he held the microphone up higher. So it could be closer to the thunder. So, you know, people could hear it.
I remember this .... thunder snow is something incredible to experience!!
In December 2009 here in the UK I was clearing snow off my car when a bolt of lightning shot across the sky and the thunder was very loud. It scared me to death because it was so close so decided to sit in my car and watch it for a moment. I have seen this happen a few times during winter snow here in the UK.
It's awesome because thunder SNOW is a very rare thing. I've never seen/heard lightning and thunder in a snowstorm in my life
I remember this well, I was born in Worcester. We got punished this winter too (some of the highest accumulations I've ever seen, with lots of roof collapses in the area). There were no places left to dump the snow and it kept piling on (my back hurts just thinking about all the shoveling I did). Lots of two-lane roads were only wide enough for a single car.
I live in Baltimore City and I remember the major snowstorm that produced thunder and lightning. 2-5-10 to 2-6-10 snowstorm.
It's amazing out there
Had alot of that this winter, it's fascinating when it's dead quiet, snow falling.. and thunder lightnings. It is epic

this has happened twice in my hometown of sanborn, ny...once on the evening of march 13, 1993, and again on october 11, 2006...
Also, the last time before this storm we had thundersnow in baltimore was in the 2003 storm. I remember because the thunder woke me up.
His reaction was too cute!

it happened in new jersey about a week ago when we had the 23 inches of snow. so strange
There were thundersnows in north Alabama last night. Too bad I live in central AL, where there was more ice. I was just a tiny bit too far south.
A few min. ago he was deemed the Thundersnow King!!
I live in baltimore, md and there was thunder and lightning throughout the night around 12:30 AM. I heard about 5 strikes of lightning.
Ever seen thunder and lightning with freezing rain? I remember one time in Pennsylvania in January in some year I forgot. 2 inches of ice with lightning is insanity.

There were thundersnows in my area too last night. Lol. Very rare.
I miss the old Weather Channel during that time. Now its more news talk & shows than weather itself.
wow...Dec. 7... exactly...8 months and 15 days after I was born...
This was from December of 1996, according to the date. Earlier that year, there was an even bigger blizzard.
Yes! The Blizzard of 96. That storm was unbelievable. I was 10 when we got that here in NJ. School was closed for the entire week straight and our cat Skittles got lost in the storm. Thank God he made his way back home a few days later. Also, my oldest niece was born two months after the blizzard, in March of '96.
wow!
heard of such a phenomenom
never seen it, in person or on video
I wonder what he likes more - hurricanes or thundersnow.
Ive seen thundersnow in Beaumont,TX back in 12/11/08.
Heard it in wallsend last night and again this evening
nice! i love the snow SOOOOOO much.
We just had a Thunder.. Snow!
We have this right now, just seen another one

Wow,never heard thunder in snowstorms before. That's weather for you unpredictable.
26.3" in 2 Storms in Worcester. December 1996.
This was Will's Favorite storm (Easternuswx weather blogs)
We get thundersnow every year in Central Ontario. One of only 3 places on Earth that gets it yearly.
**standing there**
WHOA?!?! WAS THAT LIGHTNING???!
XD
It said when in the beginning. December 7th, '96.
First snow of the winter in the North East October 29, 2011, and he did the same exact thing again. all on video.
I love his reaction
This weather can be crazy -- check out the wind from the recent Chicago storm --
we just had thunder... snow...
I saw this live I was so mad at the guys screaming at him in the background
I guess that this is possible since thunder and lightening can occur in a rainstorm and technically, a snowstorm is a rainstorm on ice.
thats what its like were i live :/, cant wait till summer
Is thunder-snow some sort of extremely rare phenomenon? One would think that it happens in the rain, then it would be no big deal in the snow. By Jim Cantore's reaction, it must be really rare......
how the hell is that possible!!?!? snow and thunder!? it must be very rare...never happened here in Europe before!
north east england at the minute... seen about 6 in the past half hour.
Probably an enhanced mid-level CAPE value of about 800-1000 j/kg (elevated convection) triggered that lightning strike from that snowstorm.
It is really rare, considering that warm air is required for it to happen.
13 inches on the ground an 4 inches per hour, that's pretty insane. last year we had like 8 inches in total and I found that much! Now I know better!
Thunder Snow is made by a rush of Cold air and Cool air colliding. It's rare, yes, but possible.
@skotnoctis I just did too about an hour ago but was snowing lightly and I did see lighting and heard thunder. I thought somebody was using their plow until I saw lighting. And was AWESOME!!
Ahh, the December 7, 1996 snowstorm, which dumped 26.3 inches in Worcester, MA.
@thatpersonxx yes i live in maryland i dont hear any now the snow started around 11:30 today but know its 12:30 at night(saturday morning) i only see strong winds but no thunder or lightning...but maybe there might be some later on today...i am realy scared !!
Just happened here in Nebraska, May 1st.
We just had a thunder....snow
@GreenEyes419 I did here in Bolingbrook!! It was crazy! Only heard it once though. Saw the flash. Amazing!
Please somebody loop the first 8 seconds... it cracks me up watching his hat flip around!
Blizzard of 96 that was something.
It's just hard to imagine!
yea i was out skiing a few weeks ago and the lightning was terrible! The snow came down like dip n dot pellets.
thunder snow in michigan right now. Its crazy
oh ! didnt know lightning could strike while snowing!
actually it has.. i experienced it myself here in grimsby, england where i live! it was on november 29th 2010, me and my friends were havin a snowball fight in my garden, england was absolutely covered in snow at the time, one of the best winters weve had in years :) at first none of us had any idea it was lightning... thought it was someone takin pictures of somethin, or a car flashin its lights, then all of a sudden there was a big flash and a muffled rumble of thunder... couldnt believe it :o
@FocussProductions whoah, didn't know you could jump to portions of the video like that!
Tornadoes, yes. Hurricanes, no. But we can get thundersnow, I have seen it before in the Uk!
Yeah, but they're not near as frequent as you get them of course. We got about 3" back in January but it all melted just a few hours later. That's usually how it happens here when we do get snow. You get blizzards down that south??? I live in Alberta and we can get snow that can won't melt until the middle of April or so.
We have Thundersnow here in NC so prediction was right!
it should be like this here...
actually that is the correct term for it
I totally remember that!
I've experienced thundersnow. It is very cool.
Press 1 repeatedly for crazy owl movements hahaha
Thunder-snow is cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
his reaction reminds me of Bruce Cambell
There was thunder like in 2008 or 9 idk I remeber I was outside shoveling snow at 7 and there was thunder it was awesome here in maryland
@420FourTwenty
Thunder snow is an extremely rare phenomenon
Does anyone else hear someone yell “That’s what you get for F***’n.......” right as the thunder is heard??
wow he wasn't scared of the thunder and the one chicgo yes
It took me a while, but yeah I heard it.
0:03
Thank me later
haha
"We just had a thunder snow."
That looks lush
You have to turn up the volume, but you seem to be right
@mcmarkwitfries thanks! that was good.
