For anyone who doesn't know, that night in Dayton there were 19 tornadoes. They ranged from EF0 to EF 5. I was lucky because everything went around the area where I lived, although for awhile one was headed right at me. Many homes that were hit were uninsured because the owners couldn't afford insurance. At least one neighborhood was virtually wiped out. A couple that I worked with lost their house. That night was Memorial Day. Three months later. On August 4, there was a shooting at a popular nightclub. Nine people died, and 17 were injured. It was a horrible to be recovering from the tornados and then have the shooting happen. The community really came together, though. I'm glad that Jamie Simpson said what he did. Lives were saved that night because of the work that he and the other weather men and women did that night. It was extremely difficult to do the warnings with so many tornadoes forming at one time.

The weatherman from Detroit who gives a lesson on how to remove snow from a car should get an Emmy award. I see so many peephole drivers anymore it's ridiculous.
@@angiecats5298 You would be amazed. They never stop to think that once a car gets up to speed, even snow-street speed, that an avalanche in any direction can cause a bad accident. Not to mention the very weight of that snow takes off MPG for each pound of snow on the car.
@Pro1er, no doubt. Driving behind someone and their car hasn't been brushed off.....once had a good chunk of ice fly back and hit my windshield at 50mph. Nice little $200 fix after that. A vehicle that isn't brushed off has the potential to be dangerous.

To be fair, I live in Canada and have seen more snow than all y'all since I grew up 1000 miles north of where I currently live (which is still in Canada) and I have never once in my life seen thunder during a snowstorm. I'd be pretty mind blown if I saw that myself.
I'm from southern california and I've seen the snow only twice. But you could see snow from a distance bc the snow falls on the mountains during the fall and winter; nice view. I would love to travel to northern canada and pittsburgh to see the snow one day. 🥂❄️♥️
Jim Cantore is amazing. He almost got decapitated on live TV while reporting from New Orleans during Katrina, and barely missed a beat. I've called him The Weather Badass ever since.
Mike Bettes is an even bigger badass because he survived the tornado that hit El Reno, Oklahoma on May 31st, 2013 albeit badly injured. But he showed his human side in the aftermath of the tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri on May 22nd, 2011 when he was clearly on the verge of tears while covering the aftermath of the Joplin tornado outside of St. John's Regional Medical Center; the only building in Joplin that could be easily recognized. One really heartwarming story about Mike Bettes is that following the Joplin tornado he adopted an orphaned Golden Retriever and named her Joplyn. Sadly, Joplyn died earlier this year. Being an animal lover and a dog lover I was understandably saddened by this but I reconciled my sadness by reminding myself that at Joplyn was adopted by a loving family and lived in a house full of love and affection.
@@michaellovely6601 that's more of being human. Being "badass" is more like having things barely affect you and intentionally going into rough weather and not being startled by anything.

@@dickbuffman594 if you want thundersnow, take a trip to east of lake Erie before a major lake effect snowstorm starts where they're saying the lake water temp/surface temp is forecast to be significantly warmer than the air 5000ft up. I loved that clip. So many people clear their windshield and call it done. I've had the bottom of my front bumper scraped before a large chunk of ice and trash slid off the top and bed of a truck in front of me and have seen another large roof chunk slide down and shatter a windshield when the person stopped at a light. It's downright dangerous to be that lazy.
A friend picked me up for work after a snowfall. My car was stuck. As we came to a stop at a stop sign, the snow on the roof of her car slid down the front windshield. The WHIO (CBS in Dayton - where Phil Donahue was an anchor before making it big) meteorologist, McCall Vrydaghs, handled it a bit better. She actually got choked up in the middle of the broadcast - seven tornado warnings simultaneously. Western Ohio saw more tornadoes in four hours on Memorial Day than is normal for the entire state in a year. People were worried about a lady who exchanged views of a windmill ceiling with a contestant in her 18th minute of fame. Only one person died and it could have been a LOT worse!
I remember hearing and seeing thunder snow ONE time when I was 7 or 8. I had a little weather book I read EVERY day and loved watching weather documentaries so I knew it was possible, but kind of rare. SO glad I found this gem! Please do another video like this. I worked at a small local TV station(that prolly 3 ppl watched) and we would do all sorts of insanity- particularly me as the weather human during the 5:30am broadcast. The broadcast news was way more fun. Love news casters losing their shite!
I remember when Jim Cantore was freaking out over the thundersnow, I was too. Thundersnow is pretty cool and hype. Jim Cantore is the best guy of all meteorologists
I live in Colorado, and have seen/heard thundersnow several times - unusual for such a rare condition, so I fully understand Jim Cantore's excitement! It is incredible!
First guy shouldve interrupted the next episode and said "confirmed deaths resulting from inconsistent tornado reporting. I hope you're proud of yourselves"

Meh...it might be gold if it was called for, or made sense, but....why does he care if people know how to clear snow off their cars? Must be the epidemic of people with snow covered windshields causing accidents, huh? Idk, that was just so..unnecessary. Like he was going out of his way to be an a-hole, I mean not only is his motivation in question, but it's not like there actually are very many people(if any)who don't know how to clear snow off their car windows, so...I'm not really understanding that.

I agree with properly cleaning snow off the vehicles but also would not be a problem if people actually followed recommended driving distance between vehicles, it wouldn’t cause an accident if someone didn’t.

Fox 2's Derek Kevra: I feel you! Nothing like going down the road or highway and someone's load of snow landing on your windshield BLINDING you and almost causing an accident! Happened to me and another and well there was almost a pileup! So Yeah, he has a reason for being pissed at people's laziness! On the otherside - I saw the Cantore's Thundersnow show and that was Hilarous!!!
Jim Cantore is of my favorite weather persons. His reaction to thunder snow was awsome. Then they showed a video of a toddler watching Jim jump around in excitement and she was doing the same as she watched him on tv.

Jamie Simpson, James Spann, Mike Morgan, Damon Lane, Dave Freeman and Gary England are the six meteorologists for whom I have tremendous levels of respect. Jamie Simpson for having ripped into viewers who were complaining about Fox 45's coverage of the Memorial Day 2019 tornado in Dayton, Ohio interrupting the new episode of "The Bachelorette." James Spann for his coverage of the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak on ABC 33-40 and more specifically urging parents in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to stay sheltered and that if the principals of their child's school got angry over their students being late they could call him. Dave Freeman for giving advice on air during KSNW Channel 3's (the NBC affiliate in Wichita, Kansas) coverage of the May 4, 2007 tornado that hit Greensburg, Kansas. Dave told any children who were possibly home alone or with a babysitter and no doubt scared to death that they had to be brave and turn up the volume on the TV or the computer speakers so they could hear him as they took shelter. Dave also urged those kids to take shelter under something sturdy such as a workbench or the basement stairs as well as telling them to put on their winter coats and use a helmet to protect their heads or use blankets, pillows and mattresses for protection. Gary England for his coverage of the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado on May 31, 2013 on Oklahoma City's CBS affiliate KWTV Channel 9 and also urging two of the station's storm chasers Val Castor and David Payne to get out of the area when they were getting too close to the tornado and it looked like it wasn't moving. Mike Morgan for his coverage of both of the tornadoes that hit Moore, Oklahoma (May 3rd, 1999 and May 20th, 2013) on Oklahoma City's NBC affiliate KFOR Channel 4. Mike was left speechless by the May 3rd storm as it was the worst nightmare of every meteorologist: a large, violent and destructive tornado on the ground in a major metropolitan area. On May 20th, 2013 he admitted on air that he never wanted to say it in his position as the chief meteorologist but he ended up saying that it was May 3rd, 1999 all over again. Damon Lane for his coverage of the 2013 Moore, Oklahoma tornado on Oklahoma City's ABC affiliate KOCO Channel 5 as it affected him personally due to the fact that he lives in Moore. In an episode of a show on The Weather Channel called "Real Time Tornado" Damon talked about how he was juggling two roles that day: chief meteorologist and husband. Damon was text messaging his wife and urging her to get herself and their dogs into their storm shelter.
Really him screaming like that over a few playful jabs by the pelican. I can see him being startled but the continued screaming must have caused Australia to rescind his man card. Then again he did laugh it off so maybe that gave him enough man points to keep it.
Thundersnow is pretty weird to experience. I have heard it a few times over the years but never actually been outside or at a window to see the flash. It was extremely difficult to do the warnings with so many tornadoes forming at one time.
thundersnow is an extremely rare event, no wonder Jim was freaking out!

She proceeded to drive without using her wipers to remove the snow. When I suggested she do that so she could see, she told me the wipers didn't work. She wasn't at all fazed by it and I just prayed we'd get to work safely. People are flat-out crazy sometimes.
