Thanks for the review! 👌🏽😉 As always, amazing work! So it seems I now got the best mix of both worlds, as a gaming content creator:
An AMD 5800x CPU (which I just got yesterday) with an RTX 3080 (4k rendering in Premiere Pro with 3080 is super fast, although for some reason limited to 40Mbps). I was looking into AMDs new GPUs, as I've heard the benefit of having a new AMD CPU with a new AMD GPU is great, but after this review, I'm not giving up on my RTX 3080. I absolutely need that Nvidia Share recording (been using it ever since it was introduced in 2012 when I got my GTX 680), and I love the DLSS.
Easiest choice of my life: I'll buy whichever will be aviable sooner in my country.
haha pretty much
This is the clearest review yet. Everyone else's opinions and interpretations of results aligned about where you'd expect (e.g. HUB for AMD, Linus for Nvidia). Your review is the clearest at demonstrating the facts that there are good reasons to go for either team.
The only good reason to go for AMD is if you don't care about ray tracing and never will till you change the card.
This video was also for NVIDIA. $50 isn't cheap enough to consider the AMD card if and when both become available.
See i am not a big Ngreedia fan. But the dlss, ray tracing(marketing bullshit i know), cuda, and render/recording features are just too good imo. Until AMD comes up with their own compelling features. I don't like to say it but i think Ngreedia is better for now at least... hopefully AMD can make up the difference soon
I sort of care about DLSS but ray tracing at this stage is just a gimmick. Like don't get me wrong it does look good but it's way too early for it to be worth the huge performance penalty imo (and sure DLSS helps with that but I find it dumb to get better lighting just to then turn around and make the whole image blurrier for it to be playable)
And given that I care way more about Linux than RT, AMD is an easy win, given the absolute garbage Nvidia drivers on Linux
I wonder if the difference in color was due to the dynamic range setting. NVIDIA GPU default to the limited dynamic range preset over HDMI because the assumption is you're connecting to a TV while AMD GPU output the full dynamic range by default even on HDMI. Perhaps the capture card couldn't switch automatically based on this input.
I tested this before. They just look different.
It is. You need to set "Dynamic range Full 0-255" under "Video color settings Advanced tab" in the Nv control panel. I've been doing this for over 10 years at every driver instal. Even asked on the Nvidia forum to set it to full range by default. They refuse to do it for whatever reason. It has no performance impact.
@@TheBlackIdentety That is for videos only. Videos use codec color settings. Anything else falls under your Color tab which is set to windows default (which will detect the range of your GPU) stop perpetuating this nonsense. Just read what it says on the Video tab.
@@-pcmr-108 No it's not. TechYesCity showed it has a major impact on color quality in games. Get your facts straight instead of trying to correct people smarter than you!
@@TheBlackIdentety I don't care what TechYesCity said, you can open up the control panel and read the description yourself. The Color settings are under a different tab and are set by windows unless you change it yourself. The exact text is as follows
'Adjusting the VIDEO color settings will allow you to fine tune the color settings for the VIDEO CONTENT on your display. For best results, play a VIDEO while you make adjustments to view the changes as they happen'
These have NOTHING to do with the natural colors on your screen, your color range, or video games. Its for encoding that is passed to the codec that reads the file. Its limited by default because most video content is recorded at the limited rate because at the time they were primarily played on TVs, which as I'm sure you know as your are apparently smarter, operate on the limited range of 16-235.
And even now, with current drivers and the last couple years this is set to let the video player pick the settings. Very simply to figure out if you simply open up your control panel, slow down, read and comprehend. This whole color thing is dumb and over perpetuated by dumbasses that wont test it themselves. There is no color difference between the two anymore outside of color profiles (not ranges) that AMD sets when you first install their drivers. For me, it auto set to vivid, which can be mimicked on the Nvidia side if you adjust your color sliders under 'Adjust desktop color settings' (not Video settings like you're implying) to their proper values.
And plenty of people corrected TechYesCity on this as well.
The song is "Nostromo - Synthwave Goose"
Just to clarify, Synthwave Goose is the artist and Nostromo is name of the song.
I hadn’t put on my glasses yet and wasn’t paying attention as i scrolled by this comment, and i thought it said synthesis grease

@@manasmitjena5593 Same. I actually like this review better than LLT's though as Linus was being really critical about AMD even though the 6800XT is a fantastic card.
Jesus christ your cinematography is insane. The beginning gave me major goosebumps.
The fact the frames are so solid, is a display of AMDs advance when it comes to their architecture.
especially looking at how terrible performance per watt has been for them in past cycles
very impressive
It's more the result of a node difference (8nm vs 7nm) and also a difference in the expectations of what next gen titles will require. NVIDIA focused on high bandwidth requirements and high number of rendering features, AMD bet is high poly count limited features. So if games scenes becomes more complex and RT more employed, the 3080 will increase it's lead.
Wish AMD's software game was as good as their hardware game. 😔

@@willwunsche6940 The same could be said in reverse scenarios was his point I think, although I will admit that having more than 10% of return rate on cards in retail stores really does suggest that something is wrong between software and QC on the cards. The 5700 XT had a really high return rate and was usually swapped for a 2070S. I myself stopped using the reference 5700 XT I had at launch because of how unstable it seemed if you sneezed at it in Radeon Settings.
The music choice in this is superb! It reminded me of the game Axiom Verge, and the visuals somehow also matched.
I love your videos man. Watching them became more than just informing myself - it's a hobby, relaxation.
Perfect on the spot conclusion! 3080 overall is a well rounded card (apart from the vram issue). DLSS, RT, Better driver support, RTX voice and Compute is definitely worth considering if you are planning to stick with the same card for the next 3 years(yes you might have to redce the the textures slightly at 4k in future titles). AMD is on the early drivers for RT and if they can improve the RT performance some more and have a DLSS equivalent, then its a better choice. Whether you care for RT or not, future games will have RT and will definitely look better with it on.
@Thomas B 25% of all games or 75% of famous games we play will have it. Most modern games worth playing will come with RT for sure now that RT is already baked into many game engines.
Thank you very much for your break down with mention of video editing and capture capabilities.

AMD's inception BWRAAM! sound
I think AMD has won the graphics cards war by offering one of the greatest 1440p video cards ever seen when 1080p and 1440p are still considered to be the predominant resolution that gamers still play at. NVIDIA chose a poor time to try to get ahead of the curve and attempt to offer smooth 4K gameplay when high refresh rates and IPS panels are all the rage right now.
Yeah I don't get why everyone is talking about 4k performance now like 1440p suddenly fell out of favour especially when 1440p is the supposed 'sweet spot'. 4k high refresh still isn't there and a good 4k gaming monitor costs more than the GPU. But I would take either of these GPUs and be satisfied
Once you start playing on 4k, it's difficult to go back... But for sure, not possible for the masses.
Amazing video! That intro is nuts! Good job mate!
So the 3080 is still the better card. Trading blows is great for AMD, but NVIDIA still has too many other advantages. Glad I already ordered a 3080
I'm really happy you got the RTX 3080. It seems to be a really amazing card for the price and I hope you'll get the better experience possible. I'm still rocking my 1080 Ti because I can't really order a 300 series card for now. You got lucky bro', really lucky 😅
I resold it with a smile(3080). The moment i saw the price difference in my case... o m g - there is no competition at all.6800xt destroys 3080 in "are you stupid to buy this shit" category.
3000 series are just way better in RT but i just dont give a fuck about better lights
@Ranov amd is working on a dlss alike this is the only technology worth it imo. But lets not forget amd is only on their first generation of RT and Dlss and seeing how they improve their technology each year nvidia better be careful because amd is really not that far
I just don't see why one would want a 6800xt, unless you game exclusively at 1440p, and you also have a ryzen 5000 cpu. Even then, the SAM advantage will soon be gone, and you'd be stuck with a worse performing card for years, because more and more games will have RT, going forward. The 16gb vram advantage is questionable, given how the 6800xt is worse at 4k pretty much across the board, and especially in flight simulator, which was supposed to be pushing vram usage past 10 gb
YOUR VIDEOS KEEP IMPROVING EVERY TIME, OUTSTANDING. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THAT RTX 3080 WATER COOLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely in LOVE with the competition this year. I’m still on the fence due to NVIDIA having dlss, 2nd gen rtx cores, the broadcast suite, and nvenc encoder. Those tools I think are worth the extra $50 for me. However if AMD addresses this next year, I’m switching over fast
Hey, this is late but what did you choose? I’m in the same fence myself
@@Astra5899 the price different is now 100$, and FSR2.0 is out.
I am 30 seconds into the video and you already have a thumbs up from me, as that intro was edited brilliantly.
So basically:
RX 6800 XT has better price to performance in non RTX games and takes less power consumption.
RTX 3080 has more features and better ray tracing performance.
The price difference is justified then.
More than justified given the AMD card cannot do ray tracing at a playable framerate.

So its not actually a 3080 killer based on these benchmarks.
I play at 1440p, not interested in 4K at the moment. Either card is a good purchase in that case.
For me it is much better.Like 20% better option(i am looking at all metrics not only fps) with MUCH lower price in my case. It is actually a killer - to my interest in nvidia's offers.
you are forgetting that the 3080 also has better RTX performance and DLSS... DLSS changes everything when turned on.
@@Revivalheb DLSS even 2.0 is a smeary mess especially in motion.
I’m liking the 3080 so far because while I play at 1440p, i like the idea that if I try to go to 4K 144hz, I already have the better card in that regard. The trade off? Slightly less performance at 1440p
a good old 5700XT or 2070 Super is more than enough for 1440P. I would rather spend the money upgrading sound system.

Is it just for me, or do the colors of the Nvidia Cards look a lot better and more natural?
But that the RX6800 XT can battle the 3080, is astonishing, well done AMD, I have to admit, well done. Finally we get some competition back.
Just look a bit darker in NVIDIA cards.
@@aphelion3472 More colorful and darker. It has not this bland look, many games had a few years ago, where everything looked a bit washed out and the contrast was terrible. Probably RTX at work?
Both great cards with lots to offer. But when you consider the price to performance or price to features aspects, the RTX is the better option. If you can afford a GPU at this price point, you can afford the extra $50. I think AMD needs to lower the price to really steal the show. Unless you’re an AMD fanboy or you only play/use AMD optimized stuff, I don’t see anyone honestly saying “yeah I’d rather get the AMD card”. That’s just how I feel, I may be wrong tho.
So that's why they didn't talk about raytracing performances
But on the other hand, RTX's first gen ray tracing is also just as bad, but they improved alot on their second gen.
Considering the 6800xt is as fast as a 2080ti in ray tracing which is nvidias first gen its pretty great

There are 2 "1440p", 2560X1440(16:9) or 3440X1440(21:9) Ultrawide.

Ray tracing is a gimmick
Can you do a follow up on the image quality? If the contrast is not right, I'm not buying it. Would not work nicely with the oled TV I have.
Something I feel like should be considered, especially given the focus of this channel, is the size and "fit-ability" for these cards in itx cases. If you have/want a Dan A4/Ghost S1/Novolo Steck etc style case then the 6800xt is a no go. There is at least one model of the 3080 that will fit in these cases if just barely.

"With DLSS enabled the 3080 gets a 60% framerate boost with no visual downgrade".
I strongly disagree with that statement. The visual difference with DLLS is noticeable. The image looks artificial and over-sharpened.
Well at least in Control...
ALSO to add to this comment: DLSS is glitchy, images pop in RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY EYES. and everything else is blurry. Theres even halos around objects and shit with raytracing on. DLSS in BLOPS cold war is not horrible, but the entire game is sub-par for optimization.
Your correct its bad.
DLSS 2 on control in quality mode gives you nearly identical image quality. You may have tried performance settings to see any difference. You should watch the digital foundry's video dedicated to DLSS on Control that totally contradicts your opinion.

Both GPUs seem to trade blows with each other, but I really do feel like the nvenc encoder, DLSS, RTX voice and the other features on the 3080 make it a better package overall.
For me if i want to use that card for more then 3 years Vram is the key and performance in 1440p is excelent, plus little more power efficient=less heat. 6800 XT for me. Ray tracing:) It`s a f. joke. With high refresh rate panel i need frames not barely visible graphical fidelity ( only new watch dogs is looking cool, control was boring as f. )
@@hokopl You don't need Ray tracing, neither do I. That's why I never consider rtx to be feature. But with the 3080 you have the nvenc encoder for streaming, rtx broadcast, rtx voice and resizable bar is also coming.
If on any day you want to record your gameplay without hindering the performance in your games or want to start streaming you have the option.
Moreover, if you need to do anything other than gaming on your GPU then the CUDA optimisation for productivity workloads will come in real handy.
If you are just interested in gaming and gaming only then more power to you but I value these extra features.
However it's no pont arguing since I can't get my hands on any one of them😅
Why does the AMD card look so washed out?
This is a big concern of mine. Might be a game breaker for me
It’s usually the other way around.
Wdym?
My answer: some settings probably weren't enabled. It could be that by default AMD now washes out colors for slightly increased bandwidth compared to Nvidia that seems to have done away with that by default as the gpu now has plenty of bandwidth compared to pascal/maxwell. But again, more likely it's a settings thing as Nvidia cards used to get this reputation because people couldn't be bothered to change a setting.
From my own experience, AMD cards usually have a punchier image by default unless you go in and fiddle with Nvidia settings. Sort of hilarious if it's now reversed.
I've seen some people in the comments saying this is something that can be adjusted in the Radeon software.
Definitely agreed on it being worth the extra $50. The issue is finding any 3080s at $699, most are in the high 700s to mid 800s these days. Seems very few available at MSRP.
No dlss, no recording games, poor ray tracing performance and especially the less vibrant colours really killed the card imo!
Sad that AMD has caught up in raw performance but don't have a good competitor against DLSS/RT and aren't as optimized for things like blender. :/ hopefully they can get it together. competition is a good thing and i'm happy to see them giving intel and nvidia a run for their money :)
RTX3080 has more features. 🤷
bruh buy what you need.If nvidia feature actually usefull for you that good. Fature ain't mean nothing if you not even using it.
@HeartXFrost For Streamers the NVENC encoder really comes in handy and Adobe has recently added GPU acceleration (which takes advantage of NVENC encoder) in Premiere Pro which literally rivals the software encoding when it comes to video quality at a slight quality loss where as AMD's VCE encoder is literally trash not to mention how fast you can export videos if you have RTX3070/3080/3090.
@@alwanammarzaki535 I agree. 6800XT is not a bad GPU if you would be only gaming but if you are getting more features for just $50 more with equal or slightly better performance in games, going with RTX3080 is a no-brainer.
It all boils down to which GPU you can find online to purchase after all as both GPUs would be gone before you blink. 😅

Your conclusion is the best I've seen so far from YT reviews. The choice depends on your target rendering resolution, and the features you're interested in (in particular RT).
What are your thoughts when thinking about next gen games? Do you believe they would tend to better maximize the usage of the 3080 rendering pipeline with more RT and more complex scenes, meaning that the 3080 would age better?
Nice. I was open to both of these as I had a 5700XT in my desktop and have a Nvidia laptop but the opportunity came up for me to get a 3080 which I was able to sell my 5700XT to cover the cost. No regrets. Absolutely amazing performance at 1440P and 4K!

Not better in 4k, only sometimes. 3D work looks much better with 3080 I'm interested in these.
Thanks for including Blender/Cycles tests. The results are pretty impressive regardless of Ampere. OpenCL can run CPU+GPU for a boost and Optix doesn't render all scenes faster and doesn't support bevel and AO shaders. The choice is still clearly Ampere for this use but I wouldn't regret using the 6800XT.
I have had no issues with the Radeon recording feature on the RX6800 after disabling some of the default Radeon settings. It is glitchy with the 'Radeon' optimized features. I turned off all of the Radeon Chill, antilag, Radeon boost, toggled freesync, Eyefinity features. Radeon recording works perfectly now - it could be due to a later release of the Radeon software and it is now smoother than the Nvidia recording feature I previously used for my RTX 2080.
I guess DLSS does it for me. But I do wonder if the 16GB VRAM will be more future proof and as with AMD, the drivers will definitely improve overtime and that could mean better performance. I guess we'll see. But the bigger thing to notice here is that the 3070 with its 8GB VRAM seems like a bad choice compared to this. So if AMD could just price it in between the 3070 and the 3080 (price bias towards the 3070), they could shift more of these.
In 6-8 months the results will switch upside down because games will be optimised for Amd hardware due to consoles
