      This channel puts Dave2d to complete and utter shame. I mean just compare the two with their 3080 reviews. Dave2d just managed to gloss over thermals and noise. I get it most people doesn't have the attention span to watch super technical stuff like Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed with their 30min videos (which I love) and prefer the aesthetically pleasing catered down stuff like Dave2d but this guy is on another level. He has all of the cinematics and minimal design of Dave2d while being well more informative and capable of catering to both the casuals and the enthusiasts.

      The SFF is a form factor, it has NOTHING to do with power ratings... he could have run all of these tests on ATX form factor PSUs and the results would be applicable to every SFF form factor PSU out there. It was pointless to specify that this was an SFF form factor video, because it has nothing to do with the testing or results in this test.

    • @billycaves7194
      @billycaves7194 3 года назад +1

      @@wolfshanze5980 Except it isn’t pointless. I bought a Silverstone 600 watt SFX power supply for good chunk of change when that was the MOST power SFX power supplies could, well, supply. This was a PARTICULAR power limit to the SFF community as it was developing as you could already get 1000 watt ATX supplies for cheaper than what I paid. Many, many people bought the same exact power supply I did. Upgrading now to the recommended minimum 750 watts for the 3080 would cost $130-250 for an SFX format power supply depending on brand, which compares to as low as like $50 for a reliable ATX power supply if you didn’t buy a big one the first time.
      It effects a higher percent of the SFF community and the effect would be more expensive to the SFF community.

    Awesome video. I just recently upgraded my rig with a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and an RTX 3080, and I've been a little worried about my Corsair SF600 80+ Gold not being able to handle it. I did run Aida64 and Furmark simultaneously without issue, but it's still nice to see that someone else has gotten similar results. It's definitely given me some peace of mind.

    • @SpaceLion949
      @SpaceLion949 Год назад +1

      It's going to run fine short term, sure, but you are putting a lot of stress of the components of the PSU. Long term it might be a different story, that should be a consideration.

    • @SpaceLion949
      @SpaceLion949 Год назад +1

      @p It will be generally fine for most application, but you could encounter a game or program such as Doom Eternal that makes the GPU have a power spike that last in the order of micro seconds. Very short, which is not enough to affect average power consumption, but it could be enough to trip your PSU overpower protection. Both components would be working as intended, however, you could have a bad experience. That's why it is mostly recommended to buy an oversized PSU. If someday, GPUs no longer present such behavior, then you could do just fine with a 600W unit.
      In regard to how good that specific SF600 plat model is, I wouldn't know unless you tell me the brand and specific model name, so I could research. I wish choosing a PSU was as easy as looking at the 80 plus certification, but sadly is actually a more complicated topic.

Then I started getting weird crashes, lag spikes, and my SSD fried along with the sata port it was plugged into. Switched to corsair 600watt and no more problems (except my dead ssd and sata port). It was a PITA to diagnose this problem. I'd go for the 750 watt if I was going to do this. Its really not worth the time and money you might end up spending. JM2C.

      420 watts from the wall AIN'T 420 watts in your system. the gold, bronze, white rating on PSUs denote EFFICIENCY. assuming you using a gold one & drawing 420 watts, you'd only be feeding 90 PERCENT of that AT BEST, which is 378 watts, to your system, which in turns means that your PSU would need to draw to the VERY LIMIT to provide just 405 watts. you're practically already straining your PSU despite numbers at the wall telling you that you still have room. it's lucky in your case that shit only happens after a year.

    This is a big issue that people haven't really covered yet because nobody can get the cards.
    I have a new card RX 6800 XT MSI Gaming Trio X and my EVGA 750W Supernova G2 crashes due to power draw with a stock clock Ryzen 5600x and x570 mb. Most 3080s are more intensive. Lots of people are complaining of crashes. Many with 850W PSUs even. I encourage you to keep doing this type of content because people don't even know what to buy to fix their issue.
    The other issue is power spikes caused at some points in games that are intensive with graphics or loading content. These transient spikes can be up to double what the card is normally doing.
    I find the best one for me to try on is Elite Dangerous when jumping systems. If you run at 1440p, 120hz, ULTRA, 2xMSAA it will crash to reboot about 30%-50% of the time.

    • @Wizongod

      Indeed. I think most people forget about that when taking measurements from the wall. A 600W PSU will SUPPLY 600W and will take a bit more. Efficiencies are usually around 90-95% depending on which part of the curve the system is at, but drawing 600W from the wall would still mean 5-10% headroom!

      @Johnfuse Ah, pardon me. I was using the SF600(plat) as the reference because I'm assuming it's what most people on ITX builds are sporting (including me). I did forget to mention that I'm on 230Vac (similar to Ali who's in Australia). Both of us get a slightly more efficient curve up to 94% peak (which I rounded to 95%) and staying above 90% under any significant loads all the way to max rating. Any non plat supply will definitely be lower though, especially his RM850x which he first presented as baseline, although he did a cursory mention of having observed spikes above 600W on the SF600 power supplies he tested.

      This is not how you measure the power delivered by the PSU, the measure at the wall is the total consumption including the efficiency of the PSU. Assuming a 80% efficiency you can multiply the measurement by 0.8 to get a rough idea of how much the pc is consuming... But even then it's not ideal, because the efficiency/power draw curve isn't linear.

    600watt might be fine for a while.. However I have this same exact dilemma when I was upgrading my GPU to a Vega 64. AMD also reccomending 750watt PSU but lots of people on the internet saying 600watt is enough for that GPU (My system is an itx i7 8700k non OC with corsair SF600 gold psu)
    After running the card for almost a year suddenly I encounter many sudden crash when loading a game or during the gameplay that prompt the system to trip. Since then I upgrade to an SF750 and have no problem.
    I think it’s safer to run a GPU with a PSU wattage that are reccomended by vendor.. Not only for the piece of mind but for a quiter system. imo as long as the power drawn from the PSU is around 80% of the PSU maximum power it is safe for the long run... Just my two cents ✌️

Never had issues with a Corsair RM650i. … I did however after one year, buy a Corsair HX750i, because it was a platinum rated PSU. It would also run my power consumption more in its middle range than the 650W. … Anyway am set for whatever comes, and I have a back up PSU that I can swap out easy. Just change over the PSU box, leaving the modular cables in place. (Except the motherboard power cable which has a different fitting on the PSU.)

      @threecats8219 3 года назад

      @@sendhelp3828 Yeah the Corsair RM650i and HX750i which I have are modular. The cables were not old by any means. Neither are they dirty, because I use a case with filtered air-intakes. Inside my PC is clean, and it only ever gets at worst, a fine layer of dust. Then I just vac it, because I clean my CPU tower at least every year. Plus I go in my PC case often to do something or other, and if there is dust I clean. There is no harm at all leaving cables from one PSU in place to use with another PSU. The HX750i has ribbon cabling, compared to round cables on the RM650i, but that doesn't make any difference.
      Afterthought. I suppose it would be a good idea to swap the cables for the GPU over. Since the HX750i GPU cables are possibly designed to take more current. At the moment I still have my 1080Ti in place, which was running on the old PSU and its cables. However the likelihood that the RM650i cables can't carry the current that the HX750i can, is slim. Better to swap them over when I get a new GPU though. Better to be safe than sorry. Yeah, thank you for leaving a message for me, otherwise I might never have thought to change GPU cables.

Also: power draw on the wall is not actual power the PSU is providing, so having a 600W PSU pulling 600W from the wall probalby translates to it delivering about 550W of power instead. It "loses" electricity in the conversion process. Saving about 30W is great though, I will definitely undervolt my 3080 if I ever get one that is...

Running a PSU at it's max rated wattage (or beyond) will significantly accelerate the MTBF (failure rate) and any potential for catastrophic failure.

I also have a 5700xt...since the 3080 scalpers proved the same will follow with 3070 and rdna2 cards....i bought the 5700xt for 300.....ive been messaged from ppl that sold their 2080s and 2070s that theyre QQ bc they never got a 3080....then they msg me a low baller for the 2080ti......SMDH....all like well idk i dont trust a manufacturers warranty i want an extended.....im like GET ONE...from one of those 2070...sellers at low ball just like you sold one.....if you are so SOL....and cant even game with a bare bone...pc. LMAO fools sell their 2070s for 300 then try to buy my 2080ti for 500....by they schilled out fanboys with no GPU for q4 2020....and looming cyberpunk........smdh nvidia planned this. The boo boo inwin 650w gold maxes out and shuts down bc it only provides like 400w max to cpu and gpu. Its got a 3600 and 5500xt in it rn just to test that the b550i is still running well with the ram etc. But once i get the new psu im gonna see if the r9(stock) can run with the 2080ti..or 5700xt...or else im gonna try to run the 3600 with the 5700xt and sell it. Just forget about sff as an endgame option. For a do it all thuper pc

    I am so happy i went with the Seasonic Prime Ultra with 750 watts on my system with an i9-9900k two years ago. So many people told me that 650 watts is more than enough but i feel really comfortable with my setup now. I have now heard from some people that their rigs with 600 watt PSUs start to give up during games/rendering and just stop running the application.

  • @Letard710

    It's. A bit shame he's missing some disclaimers. 30mins might not be enough to trip but run it for 6+hrs and see what happens. It needs some proof testing with extended periods of time.
    Also you have to take the power supply efficiently into account. 600W draw from the wall is 552W at 92% efficiency.

    • @EarthIsFlat456
      @EarthIsFlat456 3 года назад

      You're wrong about power draw. If a PSU is rated at 600W it doesn't mean it can draw maximum 600W from the wall, it means it can output maximum 600W so it actually draws more than 600W from the wall. If the efficiency is 92% it means it draws 652W from the wall and outputs 600W, not it draws 600W from the wall and outputs 552W.

  • @Arek_R.
    @Arek_R. 3 года назад +4

    Just because 600W PSU works with a system that takes 600W, it doesn't mean you should do that, it might run fine constantly 24/7 for weeks but the lifespan will be reduced and it can fail after one year for example.
    Just upgrade, your old PSU won't be a waste, you will use it for another build either yours or your friend's.

    • @VascovanZeller
      @VascovanZeller 3 года назад +1

      First of all the 563W (not 600) are at the wall. You can expect the power consumption past the power supply to be 90% of that, so ~500w. Secondly these numbers are only during gaming, not 24/7 use.

      The 3080 is prone to brief massive power spikes of over 500 watts when measured with oscilloscopes. Lots of people, even with power supplies over 600 watts have reported shut downs trying to run the 3080.

      No you can not say that. He didn't do the proper testing. Igorlabs.de has proven that the RTX 3080 (read: graphics card only) over a duration of 1ms can pull a peak power consumption of 500 watts. That's lab tested with certified top-tier professional equipment...

    Not exactly surprising results since both those SF600 units OPP only kicks in above 800W and temps will stay under control even at 700W continuous draw, while the SF450 will have OPP already kicking in around 600W. Good to know either way. Appreciate the test/video.

      Don't worry about it. I was like that. I used to play the games my system could play on budget hardware. (I first played Crysis on an E6700 CPU, a GT 320 with 1GB vRAM, and 2GB of system RAM.) Then when I upgraded to another budget system, I would again play the games I could. There's nothing wrong with running behind like that. I found it made me appreciate games a lot, because I would replay many, many times. I would always be really happy to upgrade again. Then I could play the games I had waited a long time to run. Also with buying games significantly after release, it meant they were cheap. Meaning if the game was rubbish, it never mattered. Going back to me playing Crysis, I think I paid about £3 for it.
      In effect I still like to buy my games cheap, so I can spend money on the hardware to run them. Like at the moment I have a 1080 Ti running at 1440p. However I still have not bought RDR2, or Shadow of the TR.

      If a 600w PSU can run a RTX 3080 just fine, it would mean having no problems running 3070 & 3060. a good half, if not most, who're watching videos like this are out to get info like what i just mentioned. most people ain't loaded enough to get a 3080 after all, & if it's affordable enough that everyone can get their hands on one, it won't be premium high end stuff to begin with.
