    How much does your hand weigh? Lightening the mouse just doesn't cut it anymore. The mouse may weigh 16 grams, but your hand weighs way more. To really optimize our aiming, we have to think better, more radical designs will elevate our skill.
    Cut off your hands, replace them with carbon fiber and alluminum alloy proshetics. Give yourself an unbeatable hardware advantage.

      Above or below the wrist? A wrist would be useful for small movements, but then you’d still have a forearm slowing you down. Taking it right back to the elbow seems optimal

      I considered the same, but there is some degree of movement you can do with fingertips when the mouse isn't heavy, and in sure you can do it with more agility when it's this light.

    Fun fact: the two printers highlighted at 5:11 (HP Multi Jet Fusion and Stratasys H350) are actually using inkjet printing, not lasers! The inkjet printers print an infrared absorbing ink onto the layer of Nylon powder that causes that region to heat above the melting point of the Nylon while the rest stays as a powder. This means that the entire layer is printed in one go rather than "drawing" a pattern with a single laser point, making it potentially much faster. Beyond this, the principle is the same as SLS

    I bought "replacement" ceramic mouse feet some years ago from a French company on Amazon (who doesn't seem to be around anymore), and I pop them off and apply to every new mouse I buy. They're about the size of a small button, and you remove the original feet and double-sided tape them in place. They do add a little weight, but it is low, centred and well worth the upgrade. The friction is so very low, you should consider trying such a thing on your lightweight mouse to make it feel even less connected to the surface (friction, being likely the largest drag component now, rather than inertia).

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 4 месяца назад +2

      No, it wouldn't be.
      Let's say your mouse is based on STM32L052T6 processor, you can choose the second smallest package not the smallest, 4x4x0.5mm, that's a weight of 0.01g. You only need 4 wires, power, ground, and USB D+ an D-. Now imagine you had the processor offboard, then you need to run to the mouse power, ground, sensor clk, sensor mosi, sensor miso, and 2 wires for the buttons. The copper weight in the cable adds up quickly! The one change that would sort of make sense is to remove the 3v3 regulator (sot-23 + 2 MLCCs) from the mouse and move it into the plug housing at the other end of the cable, but even that won't save you more than 0.03g including footprint induced weight.
      Bulkier processors which need more external components can come out cheaper, so you don't see this one often.
      I would remove the USB-C connector due to steel weight and replace it with Picoblade or JST GH, mould a strain relief onto the cable.

  • @chuckcharles5963
    @chuckcharles5963 4 месяца назад

    I love your design, but I think you could get it even more rigid and possibly lighter by using the PCB as a structural member. It’s pretty easy and cheap to make it into an x shape with a frame around it. Also FR4 (PCB substrate material) is incredibly strong(Young‘s modulus of 24 in bending, compared to 1.7 GPa in SLS Nylon).
    If I where you I would try to use the PCB to give structure and only add the finger rests and button covers as 1 layer thic molded carbon fiber sheets glued directly to the PCB. You could also directly apply the feet using some printed risers, to keep the sensor at the right height. Having a less complex part will also save you cost in the long run, since milling a PCB with large cutouts is sooo much cheaper than a SLS-print.
