Quake II RTX uses Nvidia Vulkan propietary extensions, which AMD doesn't implement. The new Vulkan Khronos RT extension (that is developed by 12 companies, including Intel, AMD and Nvidia) is almost ready, and the code for Quake II RTX is already prepared to use it as soon as the extension is finalized and shows up in the drivers (soon, maybe month or two from now). AMD could also implement to support the Nvidia extension, but considering very few titles use it, it is unlikely they will bother doing that.
@@movax20h Wrong. Quake II RTX uses Nvidia's proposed Vulkan RT extensions which got accepted and are now in Vulkan RT Draft (released March this year). Once the draft gets ratified (currently no changes are expected) it will be the official spec. Once it becomes official spec AMD will obviously support it.
@@andersjjensen Nvidias Vulkan extension is very similar to the VulkanRT draft, but it is not identical. There are a few subtle differences, that would ruin your day if you simply renamed your function calls.
I'm guessing it only helps in the stability of the clock speeds because setting a higher clock speed (basically OC'ing) will need higher voltage thus higher wattage to have better stability. In short, it's just like maxing out the power % slider in MSI Afterburner lol.
That feeling when AMD gave Steve more of their new GPUs than they gave to your entire city :( Thanks for all the hard work on these reviews and other GPU videos, as someone building a new PC atm they've been incredible!

Every other review I've watched so far: This cooler is soo much better! Steve: It's mediocre. Oh well, wasn't ever going to buy a reference card anyway :D
It's because of the Tjunction temperature behaviour with the overlock. The card doesn't handle it well since the Tjunction is already close to the max. I guess this is because of the use of the graphite pad combined with not good cold plate evenness. The average temps are ok but it's more complex than that.
@@yapweehow that's not how it works. The 30 series cards actually produce more heat with their higher power consumption. It's all about what cooling solution is chosen for each scenario.

Igor's Labs review is 45 minutes ... and that's just the video, while the text version has even more content. And a lot more details than GN. Hardware Unboxed is 26 Minutes still. etc ;-)
I like that RAGE MODE is about as useful as actually raging while playing a game, doesn't really do anything most of the time, and kinda just makes you a bit worse sometimes.
This video was really helpful. 6800 XT's were in stock at a more reasonable price than the 3080s in my country when I did my new build a couple weeks ago, and on the basis of this comparison I ended up getting one. I'm just glad I don't care about raytracing because it seems functionally useless on AMD's first stab at it (maybe next time).
We got some nice 6800s for only like 900-1000 euros and 6800xt for 1100 ish, don't you want to pay twice the value of a product? Well looks like no one wants since the store still has them in "stock".

As a Nvidia guy Amd is looking really impressive especially with the tighter frequency while gaming. I have the Asus Strix 2080Ti OC card now and will probably build a all AMD rig when parts actually become available. Hats off to AMD welcome back to the GPU/CPU Wars.
So far, it seems to me that if ray tracing is not a consideration then the 6800 XT and the RTX 3080 seem to be on par with each other. Getting your hands on either card would appear to be a win for the consumer. Also, love the increasingly entertaining Rage Mode graphics!
People need to understand that just because they sell out instantly it doesn't mean its a paper launch....... the demand for GPUs now is HUGE, and FAR bigger than the demand has ever been in the history of GPUs. The 3000 series demand was 10x higher than 2000 series. No matter what you do, you can't make enough to meet the demand in time, the stock situation with the 6800xt will be around the same as it is with the 3000 series... Also people thought they would actually get one for RRP is also stupid

@@superblitz2274 I wouldn't say it's "terrible" value. It straight up matches the 3080 FE in some games and at worst it is only 10-15% less FPS vs 3080. If you want RTX, then yes, that value does diminish quite a bit, but what are your RT capable alternatives besides 3080? A $1500 3090 or a 3070/2080 Ti, which perform worse. In my opinion, based on the preliminary benchmarks I've seen, the 6800 (non XT) is going to be the best performance/value GPU for the time being.
@@davidlegkodukh6969 Benchmarks say otherwise @ 4K. NVIDIA dominates with even 10GB. There's no proof of benefit of 16GB over 10GB (At least for today's games)
Something that no one mentions is that AMD released 4 major products this year. That is crazy hard, and I am without a doubt certain that a LOT of people will still not be happy with what AMD has done. Nvidia had to release only one product line and they blew it.
A lot of driver updates within the year of this Review. I just ordered one today and a Alpha-cool water block, we need another update with all the Driver updates! I think AMD is starting to pull some where. I have been a Nvidia buyer for a long time and never thought I buy a AMD GPU.
After about a week playing on this 6800xt. Overclocking memory and undervolting is key to stability on this particular design. Rumor is it’s the same VRAM modules as 5700xt that are 1800mhz, these are already at 2000. I tried over clocking and it created stuttering. I left it at 2000, 1010mv, 2600 max - 2500 min Core clock. VRM set to fast timing and well all I can say is. She is a absolute under rated video card. This card makes my 2080s EVGA Black Gaming edition that is still water blocked look like a total POS. At this point in time for VR and all my Flat screen gaming. This card is a absolute dream… I run this on a OC’ed 10900k that is Mono-Blocked at 5.1ghz all core 1.34v LLC5 and crucial Ballistix 3600mhz CL16 32gig. Idk what I throw at this card that doesn’t stay locked at 144 fps 🤷♂️. My capture computer has a 5950x so when times is needed I’ll buy another Ryzen chip and throw the 6800xt in that. NOT SURE who AMD hired for their drivers and such but I LOVE THEM, last two months they been just blowing away numbers, reading forums and everything. Nvidia is sleeping and AMD on to something…
the review with wendell seemed slightly different. maybe because he used the raytracing games that were announced for amd lol. still though this is good. amd is indeed competitive .
The two, count them, two games tested here with ray-tracing are specifically RTX implementations. That is they are designed to work specifically with Nvidia's proprietary tech. Other games that use DXR (the vendor agnostic, Direct X ray tracing API) are, unsurprisingly, closer. Interesting that they would only choose RTX games to test ray tracing when DXR exists.
@@Pushing_Pixels Both of those games use DXR, you can argue if they're optimized for nvidia or not. Can't argue with the 3dmark DirectX Ray Tracing Benchmark and Port Royale, which AMD gets thoroughly trounced. Unless you're saying UL is on the take too?
I am currently binge watching RX 6000 series reviews. And almost all reviewers tries to shoot some tasty looking packshot intros for their opening scenes. Meanwhile: "Today we are reviewing the AMD RX 6800 XT video card..." says Steve holding stripped PCB in one hand and a fan array in the other... I simply love that guy. :D
@@PocketDelicious I love it so far, I'm getting just over 75FPS in Control with max settings and medium ray tracing at 1440p. With max settings and ray tracing off I get about 105. Finally you are the first channel I see, who put Total War Three Kingdoms in to the test review for new GPU. I was missing this information for a long time as a Total War series player. Big thumbs up. THANKS for great content.
So essentially: at 1080/1440 without raytracing or DLSS trades blows with the 3080 and is a good deal. But at 4K or with raytracing or DLSS the 3080 is superior.
they'll need to come out with their kind of DLSS tho. Heard that consoles devs are working on DLSS like feature, if succeed it should be able to work on PC as both using the AMD set of hardware
@@yinitialize4930 the thing I am scared for is that nvidia has dlss for a long while now and it really has improved compared to the older dlss versions and amd just started with a dlls varient, so I think it will fall behind in not only performance but also how it looks.

@@somethinglikethat2176 Exactly. And why would amd care? Other than to 'look like the good guy', but the fact remains, it just means they sell their entire stock much much faster and still get paid the same amount. @@Paul_Sleeping Not me. We saw what happens when retailers have free reign on prices in the 90's. It wasn't pretty and pretty much handed the mom and pop computer stores their heads before online retailers had the chance to. They just took what they learned and went online.

@@testplmnb No good games have DLSS dude. Seriously, look it up, probably 4 good games have DLSS. It’s a software thing anyway, once AMD’s driver level DLSS equivalent are supported it’s not gonna matter anyway since it’s gonna apply to all games. I hope your 500 dollars more for RTX is worth it buddy hahahaha
@@enrique6335 I mean, it is better now. Nvidia has had way more time in the oven when it came to software support and extra features. Which means they are going to find themselves more favorable in most titles even from just a driver standpoint. Kinda what happens when almost the entirety of the GPU market is just NVIDIA for multiple generations back-to-back. So for AMD to come in and offer equal to better raw performance against NVIDIA's high end gpu's means that they've made some serious improvements to their architecture. I've never been one to praise AMD's graphics department, but the 6800xt is absolutely solid competition to NVIDIA, and when almost every PC title doesn't support Ray-Tracing+DLSS, a lot of people are going to find that few hundred dollars in savings in their wallets a compelling option. Even right now, as GPU supply has started to ease up, the lowest a 3080 goes for is $850 compared to the 6800xt's $700. For a lot of gamers right now that need to get a system upgrade and don't want to wait for next gen to most likely be out of stock yet again, AMD is a great option for graphics cards. And I couldn't imagine myself saying that before RDNA 2. They did it with their CPU department. I never thought my 2020 build would feature an AMD processor and yet they continue to push competition forward. Which even if you don't like their products, there is no denying their competition has benefited performances across all CPU and GPU brands. I for one am very excited for AMD. I'm not a fanboy, and will absolutely criticize them just as I do for other brands, but they are really coming back in this market with their new leadership and that is very nice. I hope this progress for them continues as RDNA 3 launches between now and early next year.

This is such a weird feeling. For the first time in so SO many years I am actually having to compare AMD vs NVIDIA again for high end gaming. I almost forgot how having a choice of two equally good products feels. First Ryzen, now RDNA 2. I remember a few years ago a friend said "AMD will probably never catch up to Intel. Intel has three R&D teams working on current, next and the next after gen of CPUs, AMD can't afford that." Look where we are now.. what a time for PC enthusiasts.

Because Steve does noise-normalized thermal testing, which means he doesn't just crank up the fan to 100% and let it rip.
It's because of the Tjunction temperature behaviour with the overlock. The card doesn't handle it well since the Tjunction is already close to the max.

Man your criticism is epic,
If i was a computer developer your channel would be terrifying lol I guess what I’m trying too say is I appreciate the Hell out of your quality control.
The reason why Rage Mode doesn't do all that much is that these graphic cards are always angry
Ìt's just the CPU mate. 10700k doesn't communicate with rage mode so he's Gamer Nexus is constantly getting his panties in a twist over something that just requires somebody to read the description.
@@MartinPuedes that's smart memory, not rage mode.
@@MartinPuedes That doesnt make sense. The 6800xt should be more angry about having to work with an intel cpu. XD
@@MartinPuedes AMD already stated that all RAGE MODE does is raise power limits. It's a cheap OC, basically.
Everyone droping the review... but we all know: only GN has the most indepth one.
So take your 30mins and get every info you need!
Love GN!
Beware of fast talkers and overly complicated reviews with wording that is nothing more than bias using aftermarket cards! I would advise everyone to watch Hardware Unboxed Review.

@@musinclind37 Their's was fantastic. Jays wasn't bad. LInus....Linus really dropped the ball and comparing it to the others and even some gaming sites like PCGamer almost looks like bias.
The quality of benchmark's presentation is unmatch !
Great job.
For a 3080 i need to pay 830 dollar to get 10gb of vram minimum in my country. For the 6800xt it is "only" 640 dollar for 16gb vram. No chance i am even considering nvidia at this point.
In my country if you manage to find 3080 its gonna cost close to 1100 dollars, while 6800xt would be close to 700 🤔
Damn right Rage mode is enabled, I had one in my cart and couldn’t check out on www.AMD.com
It's on sale today? I thought it was tomorrow
Same
The embargo lifted at 9am EST I had one in my cart and got the 503 error message at checkout! I'm pissed, I won't buy AMD now or Nvidia so someone new better come along...lol 😆
Bless the editor for including the rage mode animations! Never though I could laugh so much during a review. And, of course, thank you for the hard work in reviewing these!
AMD showed us losing temper makes things worse. Exit rage mode and keep calm, and quiet.
"... was certainly enough to change the order in the charts." The most important thing for a feature to do :P
I don't know how I never smashed subscribe before this. But it's mental seeing the channel hit 1.2 mil when they celebrated one mil like a month ago
Thanks for this review. Just ordered a 3070. The combination of DLSS, CUDA and raytracing makes nvidia come out ahead this time around. Maybe next time.
