Our AMD RX 6800 XT reference video card tear-down will be posting later today, hopefully alongside the AMD RX 6800 (non-XT) review. As a reminder, the RX 6800 XT competes directly with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 cards (theoretically at $650 for the XT vs. $700 MSRP for the 3080). The RX 6800 non-XT competes with the RTX 3070 (with the 3070 running theoretically cheaper). Our review of the AMD RX 6800 XT looking at thermal design, cooling, noise levels, gaming performance, Smart Access Memory on vs. off performance, AMD Ryzen vs. Intel performance, ray tracing (RTX/DXR) benchmarks vs. NVIDIA, RDNA2 overclocking behaviors, and more. This is one of the densest-packed reviews we've published lately, and we barely finished it before embargo lift. More to come in short order. Our pressure testing and flatness testing will be pushed into a secondary piece focusing entirely on thermals, as this review ran long enough as is. PCIe 4 vs. PCIe 3 doesn't make much impact on performance, as we showed previously with the RTX 3080, and so any AMD vs. Intel CPU differences are primarily resultant of the higher performance of AMD (particularly at 1080p). Our benchmarks include 4K, 1440p (2560x1440), and 1080p for the RX 6800 XT vs. RTX 3080, et al. Smart Access Memory testing includes the requisite Ryzen 5000 (5900X) CPU, X570 board, and RX 6000 GPU. NVIDIA is working on its own competing feature, but they didn't launch it in time for this review.

This is such a weird feeling. For the first time in so SO many years I am actually having to compare AMD vs NVIDIA again for high end gaming. I almost forgot how having a choice of two equally good products feels. First Ryzen, now RDNA 2. I remember a few years ago a friend said "AMD will probably never catch up to Intel. Im very appreciative of what guys like Steve do, but i've been thinking that myself. Your reviews are so refreshing because you respect us - your viewers - enough that you're confident that you can present the benchmarks, provide a summary of the pros and cons, give an overall assessment, and leave the final decision-making to us without condescension. Just a friendly reminder for my nerds here in Australia, the 6800xt is priced even better than most 3070's
@kim Jong-unsub true, but the 6800XT is literally $300-400 cheaper than the 3080 in Australia. I originally wanted to buy the 3080 for DLSS and RT, but that's quite a large price difference.
I managed to get in on preorder for gigabyte 6800xt (1049aud)at Mwave..havent even seen the reference cards on sale from amd anywhere...Niw after seing all of the reviews having second thoughts...
@kim Jong-unsub What exactly did they exaggerate? Everything seem in line with what have been shown.
@kim Jong-unsub I'm not sure if you're American, but the fps/$ is significantly different for Australians. No, not every game supports DLSS and RT, but the games I am personally interested in playing do. I'm basing my purchase off the games I am going to be playing, not just general benchmarks of games I'm never going to play anyway.
Here hoping that the same would also applied to Indonesia. The cheapest 3080 is $1015. Hopefully 6800XT would priced $750-850

Quake II RTX uses Nvidia Vulkan propietary extensions, which AMD doesn't implement. The new Vulkan Khronos RT extension (that is developed by 12 companies, including Intel, AMD and Nvidia) is almost ready, and the code for Quake II RTX is already prepared to use it as soon as the extension is finalized and shows up in the drivers (soon, maybe month or two from now). AMD could also implement to support the Nvidia extension, but considering very few titles use it, it is unlikely they will bother doing that.
@@movax20h Wrong. Quake II RTX uses Nvidia's proposed Vulkan RT extensions which got accepted and are now in Vulkan RT Draft (released March this year). Once the draft gets ratified (currently no changes are expected) it will be the official spec. Once it becomes official spec AMD will obviously support it.

However, when it comes to these newer titles at 4K....I don’t mind turning down settings in order to maintain 60fps but when I have to start dialing down my resolution scaling, on top of turning down graphics, then it’s time for me to upgrade. Came for the "RAGE MODE", and I'm not disappointed.
Very glad to see AMD with a competitive GPU again! Very exciting stuff. I really wasn't expecting much, considering their GPU performance over the last eight or nine years. Hope to see them continue on this trajectory. If we can see the same iterative performance uplifts we've seen with Ryzen, AMD GPUs are on track to become VERY formidable.
Great review as always. I hope you're gonna do a refresh video on the "High-End 3950X PC Build for Video Editing"... It will help me decide what's the best for my next build !
"check out other reviews just to get the full scope..."
GN: 35 minute review
Others: 9 minutes...
That's why you don't just rely on RUclipsrs. Sites like Anandtech and Tomshardware exist too.
Though personally I really dislike Tweaktown. They produced some kind of false looking EVGA 3080 FTW3 OC results compared to other sites and Steve's own notion of "they are basically the same performance". Not to mention their very annoying ads.
@@SuperSSSSooonniicccc tomshardware has their fair share of questionable moves too tho. Remember "just buy it" from the rtx 20xx's?
Hardware unboxed has in depth reviews too especially game benchmarks
@@SuperSSSSooonniicccc THG, really? That is about as legit as user benchmarks. Just buy it. ;-)
Igor's Labs review is 45 minutes ... and that's just the video, while the text version has even more content. And a lot more details than GN.
Hardware Unboxed is 26 Minutes still. etc ;-)
I'll never get tired of the RAGE MODE edits
this earned a subscribe
Thats lots of work .👍👍👏👏
Big thank you to your editor for the flying "Rage Mode" still makes me laugh. Flaming "Rage Mode" was the best.
Missed one at 4:25
18:39 You missed one "RAGE MODE" flying banner there.
Hahaha, that rage mode totally got me while drinking coffee. Loving it
Its actually a really interesting value prop in Australia. Listed at 1049 AUD vs 1400-1600 for a 3080 depending on the model.
"...It's enraged counterpart..." Hahaha
Every other review I've watched so far: This cooler is soo much better!
Steve: It's mediocre.
Oh well, wasn't ever going to buy a reference card anyway :D
Because Steve does noise-normalized thermal testing, which means he doesn't just crank up the fan to 100% and let it rip.
It's because of the Tjunction temperature behaviour with the overlock. The card doesn't handle it well since the Tjunction is already close to the max. I guess this is because of the use of the graphite pad combined with not good cold plate evenness. The average temps are ok but it's more complex than that.
wht do u expect? amd gpu is notorious for its heat
@@yapweehow that's not how it works. The 30 series cards actually produce more heat with their higher power consumption. It's all about what cooling solution is chosen for each scenario.
Beware of fast talkers and overly complicated reviews with wording that is nothing more than bias using aftermarket cards! I would advise everyone to watch Hardware Unboxed Review.

I don't know how I never smashed subscribe before this. But it's mental seeing the channel hit 1.2 mil when they celebrated one mil like a month ago
Idk if you'll see this Steve, but thanks for all the work and testing you do for us consumers 😁
Lets go bois, the time to binge AMD GPU reviews has come.
Crazy that the shortage is finally over, was able to snag a 6800XT at my microcenter for $579, absolutely love the thing
@@PocketDelicious I love it so far, I'm getting just over 75FPS in Control with max settings and medium ray tracing at 1440p. With max settings and ray tracing off I get about 105. If you can get it for $579 I say go for it, it's a 1440p powerhouse. just make sure you have a good enough power supply!
Yep. I just grabbed a 6800xt Tuf for $599.
SAM and upscaling solutions like DLSS... both still super early technologies but i'm loving this glimpse into the future!
That camera zoom in at the beginning was simulating my eyes :P
So far, it seems to me that if ray tracing is not a consideration then the 6800 XT and the RTX 3080 seem to be on par with each other. Getting your hands on either card would appear to be a win for the consumer. Also, love the increasingly entertaining Rage Mode graphics!
