Jokes aside, that's a good thing that I knew would happen, I figured an RX 6800 would barely lift a finger on Cyberpunk in 1080p, even completely maxed (RTX off) when paired with an i7 9700 (some extra cores would help). Like I imagined, when I'm zooming thru Night City on a bike at 140 mph, Rivatuner's got my CPU pegged at 99% (very CPU intensive game) loading in/out all the buildings, decals, and people. Furthermore, developers will have to optimise for AMD's RT architecture for the consoles, do you think this will transfer over to PC in uplift as it all matures?
    Maybe worth a short talking head piece or article, after you guys get some well deserved rest of course.

      As far as I know, both Microsoft and Sony have implemented their own solutions somewhat to raytracing and neither are directly using AMD's solution or just standard DXR. They have their own software or hardware to help ray tracing on their respective platforms. But even if they're 90% the same, I don't think with such a big difference, it'll change things all that much until they bring out RDNA 3 to be honest and who knows what Nvidia will have by then.
      The thing is even with DXR optimised games, Nvidia's cards as far as I understand, would still run them better even if they're not using any of their proprietary RTX features directly due to the dedicated RT cores. Couple that with the fact that some renders apparently don't work properly in openCL anymore in Blender and the fact that Nvidia has most programs optimised for its cuda cores AND has more overall features on the cards and for me, it just has to be Nvidia I think.
      10GB seems a little low for the future as I'd planned to get a card to last a good few years at least while pushing the best graphics or thereabouts so was looking forward to the 16GB with AMD. Alas with all of the above, I just can't risk it. The 3080ti would be perfect with its 20GB, could buy one of those and not upgrade for 5 plus years but I really don't think I can afford a 1000 dollar graphics card. Would be good to get an idea from someone a LOT more knowledgeable than me though for sure.

    Honestly for me the RT performance leaves me with more questions than answers. So one of the big selling points for both of the 2 new Consoles is Raytracing. Both of them use the same RDNA2 Architecture yet so far the 6800 as well as 6800XT struggle a lot to consistently output 60 FPS even on 1440p with raytraced games. On paper however both cards have much more oomph and memory than the consoles.
    Are the few current DX12 RT games just really not well optimized yet (because RT is kinda an afterthought maybe) or is there something with the consoles that I am missing entirely that somehow can achieve better results with way less powerful hardware? Obviously I know that games can be optimized a lot better since the hardware is always the same but still something doesn't quite add up here.

    • @kadatherion_
      @kadatherion_ 3 года назад +2

      It's simple: consoles are always running lower graphics settings than what you see on PC. It's been like that in the past gens, it will be in this one too. And sure, it comes down to optimization, but optimization for consoles often boils down to that very thing: how much (and in what way) can we scrape off graphics fidelity - and as such load for the gpu - before players begin noticing their game looks worse?
      The new consoles *already* are struggling keeping stable 60fps with their launch titles (look at Spiderman: if you play it in fidelity mode - read: rt on - it basically runs at 30 fps).
      Seriously, consoles have a different market, they can sell you hardware at cost, sometimes even at a loss, since they are proprietary platforms and they plan to recover that with the actual games sales. But there's a limit to that: you can't expect miracles when you pay for the whole platforms *less* than what just the kind of equivalent gpus would be supposed to be worth standalone. And if they are promising you such miracles, well: they're lying.

      tldr; console RT will not be as good as Nvidia RTX because of inferior RT architecture like RDNA2
      RDNA2 implemented RT because they had to compete with Nvidia. That's really the only reason for it being present in the new architecture, if Nvidia didn't push to start using this technology in real-time games rendering, neither company would probably be using it right now, and the same can be said for the new consoles. Its pretty easy to assume that if RX 6000 is unable to keep up with RTX 30 cards in RT, the consoles will struggle in a similar way too. Also, let's be honest, the vast majority of console gamer's don't have a clue what RT is or why they want it, it's pretty much just a marketing tool for Sony and Microsoft so they can say "well technically we have RT" and, with RT specifically, this isn't something that can simply "be optimized" by developers because RT performance is actually dictated by the actual architecture of the GPU die itself. That is why Nvidia will probably always have a lead here, because they are one generation ahead. Not to ramble on too much, but it's also worth mentioning that since AMD has been designing the hardware for consoles for generations now, and people have been saying games will always be optimized better for their architecture, but it never really measures out that way. I'm really happy to see RDNA2 trading blows with the top RTX cards though, this makes a really good market for us consumers.
      And just a PSA for anyone who wants to call me an Nvidia fanboy: I've had 7 different graphics cards in my life and 5 of them are Radeon , and I'm STILL currently using an FX-8350 processor. (Don't worry I just bought a Ryzen 7 5800X)

    • @Madtroll1209
      @Madtroll1209 3 года назад +1

      1. Your game performance (fps) suffers significantly with Ray tracing. Everyone knows that you will be sacrificing fps if you turn on Ray tracing. So in a sense, Ray tracing does not make your game "play better". There has been no instances by far, where turning on Ray tracing improves your fps. Since good Ray tracing gpus aren't cheap, these people tend to have expensive, high refresh rate monitors, why would I play at 70fps when I can play at 100+fps and not make good use of my 144Hz monitor?
      2. Asking what the difference between Ray tracing on and off is like one of those questions girls ask their boyfriends. No, I don't care, neither do you look really different until I look up-close. That's why I don't care about Ray tracing. My game doesn't look bad without it, but it sure plays worse ( because of lower fps) when I turn it on. Yes, ampere has better Ray tracing performance, but it's still a noticeable fps dip that I don't want to mess with it.

Currently released games don't have much support for it as cards able to run it weren't readily available, now that they are (or soon will be) devs are going to be implementing it into far more games. Even now more and more games are announcing that they will launch with RT support.

      As for "announcing" stuff, well, ngreedia "announced" like 30 games with RTX support back then when greedy f%$#er huang peddled this useless stuff. How much actually implemented ray-tracing in the end? 3? Yeah...

      @Aaron King Yeah, I'm a fan of AMD, always have been, but on the software side they just haven't been competitive in a long time. No good answer to NVENC, they are behind in performance basically across the board in productivity, and Nvidia has all the AI stuff (I don't really understand it but I have friend who's a researcher in the space and they just ordered a bunch of 3090s for the departments work rigs). I think that we have to acknowledge how big this is for AMD, but also have to acknowledge what this is. They have certainly not beat Nvidia, but for once they are a legitimate competitor on the high end. I wouldn't be surprised if a year of software development and refinement of the hardware leads to them being in a better position next year, but they aren't there yet.

    My take is that AMD is in a better place than they have been in the last 5 years, but it's still not good enough.
    It's not enough for AMD to offer similar to slightly better rasterizarion performance at a similar to slightly higher price.
    Let's say you don't care about ray tracing, you don't care about upscaling, and you don't care about the hardware video encoder.
    You *still* have to deal with AMD's drivers, which despite improving quite a bit remain buggier than NVIDIA's drivers.
    The reality is that NVIDIA could have been greedy this generation, called what they released as the RTX 3070 the 3080, and called what they released as the 3080 "Titan".
    If NVIDIA had done that, the RX 6800 would have been a lot more interesting. It would undercut this alternate reality "3080" on price and beat it on performance.
    But NVIDIA didn't do that. It seems that they knew that AMD would be more competitive this generation, and so they put their biggest consumer GPU silicon in the $750 price bracket.
    So we're left with a situation where AMD is maybe slightly faster in some cases, but they lose all over on features. They don't have AI upscaling, their RT performance is way worse, and their video encoder continues to suck while NVENC is now competitive with software encoding.
    AMD needs to be honest about where they can play, which is by offering performance per dollar. A $450 8GB RX 6800 would be pretty compelling. Then, it makes sense to say, I don't care about those NVIDIA features, I'm saving $50, and my performance is better.
    I don't know why AMD didn't change their plans, other than maybe the fact that both AMD and NV seem to be so supply constrained that maybe they figure they will sell everything they can produce at their current prices.

    • @z7eleven
      @z7eleven 3 года назад

      Good points, though, I feel if Nvidia named their current 3070s as 3080s and 3080s as Titans, AMD would have done the same. There is no sign from recent AMD launches, that would like to restore market to previous levels, conversely, they tend to increase prices per tier as soon as they get a chance, for example, Ryzen 5000.

      AMD doesn't seem to really care about outselling Nvidia, they just want to give them a real battle to regain market share. And as they have an often substantially better raw performance at 1080p/1440p, they're probably banking on that section of the market.

    • @zemi2750
      @zemi2750 3 года назад

      I agree, but consoles driving the optimizations for this cards is something to keep in mind. It seems the smart way to go about it is to wait it out and see where drivers and better performance stack up, right now it's like taking a gamble. So far from everything I've watch it's either (no ray tracing) at 1440p 6800, or a 3080 max everything at 4K and peace of mind for the rest of the build life-span. Of course, if you can get either one that is..lol. I'm at 1440p 144hrz, so even If I could buy one, I won't.. gonna take my time see how it matures.

    • @BrianCairns
      @BrianCairns 3 года назад +1

      @@zemi2750 I suspect that supply will be the deciding factor for a lot of people right now anyway. I would probably own a RTX 3080 right now if I could get my hands on one at a reasonable price (currently I have a 1080).
      My decision is pretty much baked-in at this point, though. I have a 1440p 165Hz classic G-Sync (not G-Sync compatible) monitor, so if I bought AMD I would either need to buy a new monitor or give up adaptive sync.
      I think AMD will sell every card they can make.
