Blend between sections/players sounds leagues ahead of last season, especially this time last year. The increase in note density is really nice to hear too. As an alum, it would’ve been dope to learn from Mike and co.
7:05 to the end is such a choppy chunk. I like this writing more than last years, Such a cool MIX of East & West sounds instead of just West👍 thx 4 sharing
Regardless of how this sounds, I already think their hands look good. A nice uniform approach. Just have to get everyone firing at the same torque into the drums. Excellent start.
I think it's a hot topic. That for the past 7 or 8 years they've had a specifc, intentional style under the team of writers, directors, and techs like Hannum, Schack, etc. that people let 2013's line determine the entire skill of percussion for years to come which is a general blind statement and inaccurate, and doesn't give credit to the hard work that the lines the years after did. 2016 was clean. So was 17, 18, and 19, 20, 21, and 22. I have a lot of respect for MJ and his different angle to challenge this drumline with. It sounds different and looks different. Different doesn't mean bad. It's just new. And crown is handling this change very well.
Much improved over last. They are now where they were at the end of last season. The addition of Mike and his staff last season was such a needed change.
Ehhhh they really only placed third in perc on finals day only last year, just like in 2018 so unless their perc starts scoring up there consistently then it's kind of difficult to justify the staff change from that standpoint. That's not to say mjack and kshaw don't write neat books, but they really haven't set themselves apart from the previous perc staff at all
@@jordantyler148 Ehhhh sure but that can be said of any staff leads/designers. They didn't really elevate or innovate the overall design enough to push past bloo in 23, maybe they do this year. Percussion/sound design is somewhat independent from the whole programming of the show too. Funny enough, crown's worst percussion from 2012-15 had the best finishes & show design: a gold in 2013 with a incredibly hard to clean book that dragged down the perc score even with an all time front, and what would have been another gold in 2015 if the percussion didn't tear front to back that night (I was in the stands watching it happen). Again zero disrespect towards MJ or KS. I'm sure you're right, but I just don't see the reward of the perc staff change yet for crown.
@@opem1383 They were on par with bluecoats the entire season, those scores on finals and semis nights are incredibly close, and they won prelims. I agree that the best show design was 2012-2017, those were with their old design staff, who left. And since then, crown has had, let be frank, awful design direction. That's what mike jackson has brought. It's easy to say crown lost in 2015 because of percussion, but their brass got worse throughout finals week. There were crown members ordering their championship rings before prelims. They lost because they didn't push through the end of the season. But lastly lets not pretend the 2018-2022 percussion writing was good, it was awful for the shows and tended to get dirtier towards the end of the season. If we both agree that the show design and percussion section both needed help, why would you have any issue with the new staff who solves both of those issues, especially after 2023 giving them their first medal since 2017, and one of the lowest score gaps between brass and percussion.
Yeah I agree. The difficulty is there without a doubt, but 1-2 minutes in and it just all sounds the same. No hate at all, but it doesn’t do it for me either.

Is anyone else genuinely not a fan of this writing? Seems repetitive with the same ideas. Buzz rolls, deceleration singles, with the occasional high roll. Not a lot of dense flam figures, and it's vertically aligned from section to section basically the whole time. Mike Jackson's style used to be a lot different, not really sure what happened.
I agree but I’m sure there’s a few good reasons for it. It’s early season so they might change it later. It also might just be because of their skill level. Recently, crown typically relies on the hornline and keeps battery as more a textural thing. It could also just be Mike Jackson trying something new, it’s artistic after all
