I sat in the sky box next to him while he made this recording....and watched him and watched Crown. I saw this first hand and felt that passion he had. He WILL be missed.
Sorry for your personal loss. May his memory be a blessing. I admire his work here and I can only imagine the impact of his profound loss to the professional community. I come back to this audio when I’m seeking reminders on how to provide meaningful feedback to students. This is an outlier due to the masterful execution, but it is a great look at how to provide constructive feedback to even the best performers.
This was my HS band director who guided my love for music. He was demanding, but inspirational. He conducted music the way I wanted to play. He empowered his players to be better than they thought they could be.
Rest In Peace to Joe Allison, a man who truly loved this activity with all of his being. Some great quotable nuggets from this tape: “I almost said the F word, GOD that’s impressive...F for phenomenal, right?” “If you can connect like that for the rest of this, it’ll be a picnic on a sunny day.” “When you’re playing this game, every ounce is a pound.” And my favorite: “Someday, I’ll tell you why this touches me so much...and 99.9% of it is you, of course.” Thank you for all your contributions to this activity Joe!

RIP Joe Allison. Just a good, quirky dude who loved music and loved this activity. I had the honor to know him as an adjudicator in DCI and then to stay in touch over the years on professional and social media platforms. He will be missed.
Such a touching tape. He was truly touched by this show and just could not hold back his emotions. Thank You for sharing. He made me cry listening to this. Thank you for sharing. RIP
It was Joe and the late Ed Warren that mentored me in getting my Visual Judge certification through Drum Corps Midwest in 2002 - a certification I was bestowed on me by Ed himself after trial judging through the Midwest over about a 3 week stretch, but never really used afterward. To be taught by both of these men was truly an incredible honor, and it is an understatement in saying that they will both be missed. I’ve watched this judge tape by Joe at least 5x, and it tears me up, every time. RIP Joe and Ed.
@@nickniehaus17632000s Cavies is God tier, they were absolutely throwing down back then and the scores definitely showed. Crown 2013 is my favorite show of all time but I have a sweet spot for DCI in the 2000s
I'm glad to see I was far from the only man commenting here through watery eyes. For me personally, I wish this fine gentleman was judging when I marched, he so eloquently validated the hard work each member puts into their show and performance of it. I so wish I had the chance to meet Dr. Allison, what a genuine human who loved what we do....in essence, Joe Allison "got it". Thank you and may you sleep in eternal peace Sir.
Thank you for taking the time to edit the subtitles. Also, thank you for including the HD Multicam. Really brings together the judges tape. I'd love to see/hear more of this type of content!
Well here I am sitting at work tearing up now. if only 14 year old me could have really understood what this show means and the impact it would have on my life, my career as a musician, and my life overall. thank you DCI for sharing this.
RIP Dr Allison. Drum corps shouldn't be about hitting the judging marks. It's about emotion, the love for the activity and the connection with fans. Crown connects.
Never heard a tape where the judge comments on the crowd. I love Joe Allison. He gave us such wonderful advice and critiques when I was marching at carmel 2012-2015 seasons.
Congrats one your 2012 Grand national title! What a web we weave was one of my favorites, I’ve marched 2021 and 2022 at Grand nats and had similar experiences as you guys did! The marching arts is amazing
Absolutely one of the greatest shows of all time. It's touching to hear his commentary and how present he was in the moment - just to fully grasp what he was seeing and hearing.
The biggest fans and cheerleaders have always been the judges. This is so beautiful to hear. Thank you Joe Allison for such a beautiful, everlasting memory of your love for activity!
Good Lord. To me and my taste (and admittedly I’m a Crown brass addict) this show was damn near perfect. Saw it at Finals and have watched it many times since. Just unreal.
This video explains everything to the unfamiliar. Epic. Edited to say that I’ve watched this more times than I can count. This man embodied how powerful this art is; there are no age limits to its effect.
This invoked a profound spiritual effect on him and quite frankly on me and others listening. He was in a state of nirvana. “You know” was very much a description of something that was indescribable. I am glad I came across this (and am blessed to be a crown alum)
Wow, such gorgeous sonority and great low brass and such great tone quality and the articulation is so spot on. Visuals are quite captivating and keep me continuously interested. Nice trumpet line working together so beautifully.
I love bawling to this show too….every time! Was excited to finally see this judge’s video posted since it’s been a while now. Loved Joe’s comments throughout. Wanted to meet this guy some day….but of course after reading the comments, this is not possible. RIP Joe! Maybe Joe’s bawling because maybe he had a dad named “John” who sat on a hospital bench in a sunny courtyard with his cancer-stricken bride of 50 years and held her hand as she tried to live one more day. (Miss you Mom). This is why this show brings tears. It’s so real.
My dad judged in prelims that year. It may have been brass, but I'm not sure. It was awesome seeing his face on a movie theater screen. I think his neighbor (and Cavaliers alum) got even more excited than I did. There was a shot of him writing on a judging sheet and it was the most serious I'd ever seen him.
Saw this prelim show in the theatre and cried a little at the beginning, more in the middle, and bawled from the Love Story until the end. My friend came with me and cried right alongside. So yeah. I get it. Musicianship and tonal structure at that level is seldom experienced in one's lifetime. To be a judge for it? Yeah. That man held nothing back and we are all better for it.
My twin brother and I were so lucky to see this in fresno😊and understand why the judge felt the way he did at the end. The sound alone was just on another level compared to other bests of the bests. The experience was almost transcendental😂😂😂

There is one thing that would be more astounding to hear than this judge's tape: Getting to hear this show LIVE at the 50, about halfway up. Only those who heard this performance in the best possible zone of the stadium will know what Joe heard. I'm so sorry I missed this in 2013. The brass sound phenomenal.
This is one of another zillions reasons that this activity is so brilliant and how it touches lifes of everyone involved. The emotional impact of this show, with this AAAAAmazing hornline is something unique. Thank you for sharing it.
Wonderful to see someone attempt to put into words how I feel every single time I see this performance, because I fail every time (and see him fail a few times as well for all the right reasons). Hands down my favorite.

Love this show...one of my all-time favs. and love hearing judge tapes. Glad this was posted. (and was music...lots more percussion judge tapes out there, which are great, but like hearing other captions as well!). just wish they'd get finals out of a dome...sound is so muddy (especially percussion). their final audio recordings are cleaned up, but it's bad in person. I've been to only 2 finals in Indy and it's my least favorite place to listen to a show -- so much more clarity of sound when the venue is outside... without the bounce. (I go to Rose Bowl each year...can hear so much better).
My high school band played their balled last year and we made state so we had to have been doing something right also Linda Harvey was a band director at my middle school lol
