  • After falling out of the Top 12 finalists in 1976 and finishing 20th place in 1977 and 1978, the Troopers eyed a comeback in 1979. However, after finishing 14th place at the DCI Midwest Championship Prelims in Whitewater, Wisconsin several weeks earlier, the corps increasingly looked to be a long shot to climb back into Finals. That is until they marched onto the field at Legion Field in Birmingham.
Judging the General Effect Brass caption at the World Championship Prelims that year was future DCI Hall of Fame member Dave Richards whose recorded judging commentary during the corps' closing tune has become legendary for its raw emotional response. It's a recording that has been shared with countless generations of Troopers members even decades later, as an example of how any performance on any given night can inspire.
In this video, audio from Richards' judging tape from the corps' Preliminary performance is laid atop the corps' Finals performance for illustrative purposes.
Richards passed away October 6, 2024, after a number of years of declining health. He was one of the last surviving members of the original panel of adjudicators who judged at the inaugural DCI Championship in 1972. Read more: dci.org/news/d...

The PR 2010 drum tape is also a great example. He goes crazy over the basses a lot and ends up crying in the end

Had a friend (he's gone now) who marched mellophone for Troopers that season. He told me about that tape & how every year they play it for the corps. I'm glad to finally hear it for myself. Life long Troopers fan.

Troopers got 12th, but Richards put them in 5th, tied with Scouts and even above the 3rd place overall SCV. Listening back, it's hard to disagree :)

God I love this tape so much! I’m so proud I got to play Ecstasy of Gold for my rookie season in 22’ and made the long blue line proud! The 79’ Troopers spirit pushed us over the line, hearing this tape made me proud to be a Trooper, it made me want to repeat history again to make them proud! >”

First time I saw the, Casper Troopers, is when they came East, I believe in New Jersey? Anyway I was with, Steve boglino, play French horn with the golden eagles from Brooklyn and Long Island sunrises, he's in the Drum Corps Hall of Fame. We could not believe what we witnessing, at that time it was the most exciting, drum and bugle c o r p s that I ever witnessed both Steve and myself would jumping up and down both former members of the golden eagles and the sunrises, Floyd Bennett, 1960, 1961, sunrises, 1964 through 1968. Thank you for posting this clip. Great great memories. We no longer have real drum and bugle Corps. May they rest in peace.

I agree 100%. Old School drama vehicle course many standing ovations throughout, most of the drum and bugle Corps. It was a real drum and bugle Corps, not a marching band, superimposed on a three-ring circus. DCI has price the activity out of business. Average person can no longer be any activity due to their course going through the roof, once was the largest youth activity in North America. Today it no longer exists, thanks dci, in my opinion

@@ardyjeen6144 I agree with you 100% period in my opinion DCI is the reason for the demise of what was one of the greatest youth activities in North America. They turned it into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three-ring circus, and they priced many organizations out of business.
