Love it! Been waiting for this one to be produced. I. Sold Hyundai’s for 5 years of my 20 years selling luxury cars for a living. Sold Hyundai the last 5 years before retirement. Loved their line up so much I bought my wife a Elantra Limited before I retired. It has been great car. 60 K miles 5 years old and never 1 problem. 👍🏻
A year or two ago I watched a review of the Amarok, a very short bed pickup resembling the Santa Cruz that VW sells in Australia and other international markets. At the time I questioned why someone would buy such a vehicle rather than a similar size unibody SUV with nearly equivalent cargo capacity and a roof. The answer was that it was much more practical to bring home a deer carcass in a truck bed than in the vehicle's cabin. Makes sense.
I want this as an Ioniq 4 or whatever, especially considering they're not targeting it for off-roading and just casual activities, it'd be great electrified.
3:50 - I'm not surprised it rides better, it's got a longer wheelbase. I hope this sell well, I'd like them to be around when I'm looking to replace my old BMW X3.
I always loved the style of the Subaru Brat growing up and the Baja later in life. I hope the Santa Cruz sticks around long enough for me to get around to my next vehicle... I like it and would consider it if I were shopping for a vehicle now.
I'm really liking this vehicle! It may very well be the first vehicle that gets me out of my VW GTI. (had two of them since 2011) It's such a cool, versatile vehicle that looks great, works on the road, and mildly off of it, and the price is so reasonable!
These days if you need a truck of any kind new or Pre-Owned you are going to forking out a huge chunk of change, I sell new Ford's and new Hyundai's at my dealership and from what a lot of what our customers are saying about them is they would like to have a truck, but a ton of them don't need an F-150, or even something comparable to a Ranger which even that scratches the $40k-50k price range for something that has reasonable features, both the Maverick and Santa Cruz have finally unlocked an option for a lot of people who don't need a massive truck but could use a truck bed for light hauling, I think both Maverick and Santa Cruz models are going to be really great for city contractors and people who need that light duty work but don't want to shelve out a years earning for something. But yes Hyundai has really been outdoing themselves with all of their models that past couple years and you definitely should keep them in mind when you're car shopping, considering they are quite literally making some of the best vehicles on the market right now.
There's a reason there's a cult built around the smaller Ford Rangers - with a long bed and a six - they're all the truck 99% of folks will ever need. They're comfortable and well built - and last. Oh - and just a fraction of the cost of a modern new truck - which I wouldn't buy if I won the lottery. And yes - I know what I'm talking about - I was a remodel contractor for 45 years...
Great Review Tom!! This Santa Cruz looks great and can’t wait to see it in person. Hyundai is going to sell a ton of these and possibly one to me in the next year. (I’ll follow your advice and test drive at least three vehicles)
It's just a Subaru Brat. What's so new about it? It has a useless little bed just like a Brat. It's not a truck... like a Brat. You can't even fit two bicycles in the bed! It's just a car without a trunk lid. 🤏
Its an awesome platform but IMO there are 2 things missing. #1 PHEV. Bump up the fuel economy and make it partial zero emission for short trips. #2 Passthrough from the bed into the passenger compartment. I want to be able to load up my ski gear and a short bed won't cut it.
We are getting 29 and 32 with our sel premium. Love it .A Rocket Ship. Every Where we go it gets people coming up to us . Older guys Love it .Its like our favorite Hot Wheels.
So, this a four-door Ranchero (or El Camino if you prefer that manufacturer). It might've been worth considering if it had been a two door cab with a longer bed. I wonder if they will make a cap to at least provide a "full height" bed that protects big cargo from the weather.
My GTI scoots to 60 in around 6 seconds and everyone thinks that's fast... but the Cruz seems to be decent competition against it! I think it will be a hit. It won't sell as much as its SUV counterparts (I suspect) but I am glad to see a viable alternative on the road like this product. I intend to seriously look into it. The design is spot-on and not geeky like the previous cars of this body style, handsome from all angles, and the colors are a refreshing change from the blah greys that dominate all other makes. Hyundai does it again! It's a car that can do the grocery run, take you to the great outdoors and yet keep you comfortable no matter what. Great review again.
Fellow GTI owner here, had my current MK7 since 2015, and had a MK6 before that from 2011-2015. This Santa Cruz may be the first vehicle that gets me out of the GTI. The versatility of the Santa Cruz is just what I have been looking for.
@@Incomudro1963 Yeah, I had a MK6 and loved it until the engine gave out at 135k. I have a MK7.5 now and like it, but the throttle mapping and transmission shifts seems to have been modified for better economy unless you put it into "Sport" mode but then it just hangs onto gears too long. Annoying. I agree with your assessment of the Santa Cruz. Can't wait to test drive one and check it out in person.
My folks (in their late 70s) picked up their first SUV 2022 Hyundai Tucson. Finally took it for a spin. Hyundai has come a long way. Really nice build. Steering was about as detached from the road as you can get and the accelerator pedal was more like a lightswitch but everything else was solid, looked good and well made. I really DON'T like floating dash screens. I mean I really hate that look so I liked the integrated infotainment screen. Seems to be similar to this car. Looks way better than the floaters.
Interesting observation on how quiet it is on the highway, not only when compared to other truck-ish things, but even to luxury vehicles! Maybe more than anything else, that is what will set it apart from the competition. Too small to be the family vehicle for all 5 McLellans, and not fun enough to be my to-and-from workmobile, but something that future empty-nest me would be interested in for sure.
I was taking my Miata for a scenic drive the other day and saw alot of Santa Cruz near Santa Cruz and highway 1. Now I realize it might be press cars. lol
No doubt a cool vehicle. Now, you said you can fit 4x8s in the bed? That would sell it for me. You're right though, this segment has never sold unfortunately.
I can't believe this isn't coming to the UK. Put the 2.2 Santa Fe Diesel and a 6 speed manual in it, or a Hybrid power train. This will take over the SUV market and even appeal to estate car buyers.
It’s just OK I went and test drove one and even the turbo engine version is a little bit sluggish. The biggest issue for me was it’s terrible blindspots. It almost made the cabin feel claustrophobic because of the lack of visibility. The Ridgeline is a much better vehicle if your looking for one of these suvs with a bed.
My brother traded in his Santa Fe for the Santa Cruz, his santafe had issues. He loves to Santa Cruz. And he got the turbocharged Edition and I guess it hauls ass pretty good. Is that the same colour as the one being tested here and it's a beautiful vehicle and he does a lot of onlookers. He was the second owner in our city that have a Santa Cruz
This will outsell everything just like the KIA Telluride is doing. Dealers can't manage to keep enough in stock because everybody wants one. They look so cool and have better features, warranty, practicality etc than most vehicles in the same segment. Hyundai/KIA brand is an underdog disrupting markets historically dominated by American brands like Ford, GM, Dodge or other Asian manufacturers like Toyota and Honda. The Santa Cruz made Ford try to catch up but they're offering a traditional looking pick up truck which is like their older ranger. Soon, others will start making smaller trucks so it will be great for the consumer.
I have a Honda Passport AWD Elite that I paid about $40,000 back in 2020. I get 24.5 mpg on the highway and even once got 26.5 mph with cruise control on.
Tom, another excellent review! I have to tell you, if I wasn't still smitten with my '18 CX-5, I would seriously consider the Santa Cruz right now; a sexy, techy, mini-truck, sort of... I wonder if this vehicle will trigger much competition from other automakers? Seems Ford already tried and failed with their Maverick - and it's not even for sale yet! Poor Ford, they keep trying (and failing miserably)! I'd be interested to see if GM or Mopar think it would be worth the effort, I'm sure they'd fare better if they did. Maybe Subaru can resurrect the Brat or a Baja-like vehicle again - always liked those. Is Isuzu still around? This genre would be right up their ally judging by their past efforts. Maybe even something by Toyota, Nissan or my beloved Mazda if this sort of vehicle catches on, you never know. Then again, I like fungus...
I've been looking at this car since it came out. Frustration was that my dealers only ordered the $41K models in my area. I could not go to the showroom to buy a SE new. Two years on they're starting to show up used in the states around my tourist-y state and I'm shopping for a used '22.
I didn’t love the look of this when I first saw photos online but in the months since then the concept has grown on me. I might get one if availability is reasonable. I have for years swung between large 4X4 half ton trucks and sports cars. This may be right in the middle for me. I still am not smitten with the looks but the concept is great for me. I have a 3500lb trailer that I need to pull occasionally and I end up carrying lots of dirt and plants. Perfect for that.
Yeah 22 mpg combined is brutal. I get that the truck firm factor has more drag than a crossover like the Tucson but still. They need to bring the hybrid over from that at least.
I'm thinking similar, along the lines of the Ford Ranchero, and Chevy El Camino, back in the day. They weren't pick ups either, but had open cargo carrying abilities too. Oops, I didn't finish watching, before posting..you beat me to the comparisons. Ranchero, El Camino!! Lol.
Is it just me or am I seeing flashbacks of the Isuzu VehiCross in the Santa Cruz when the white one was displayed right before this green one at 1:24 mark
Nothing else like it? It's a downsized Ridgeline. Just like the Ridgeline, it's a unibody based on an SUV platform. And, just like the Ridgeline, it features more comfortable driving and random storage areas compared to body-on-frame trucks. The biggest difference is that it comes with a FWD option.
Just bought a 2022 Santa Cruz July 23rd. Paid MSRP, no mark up. It's an SEL so not all the bells and whistles this one has. I liked the maverick, but wasn't willing to pay more than the manufacturer says it was worth.
What a shame they only build it in a 4-door. All of the concept models were shown as a really sharp looking 2-door but people with sharp pencils said it wouldn’t sell so they turned it into a soccer mom station wagon.
You can get a silverado that will beat in mpg and than turn around and crush it in towing and loads. Sant cruz won't last long. Maverick nailed it in price a fuel economy with the base engine. Not only are they getting people that just want a small truck for weekend getaways. Service companies are getting it for their fleets.
@@robertsn6584 Are you serious? Those old small Rangers have notoriously great mileage and the new one, from what everyone is finding in long test drives, is proving 100% as claimed.
Another good video. An interesting sav alternative. I like it and can see the high content value proposition creating a lot of interest. I hope it does well.
I have one I put a 2" lift kit on it and BF Goodrich tires 265 17 TA I've taken it off road a little bit and it handles way better than my Subaru does and I get looks everywhere I go
Excellent review and outstanding video production quality. I agree…Hyundai may want to consider a raised and more rugged “Bronco-like” version for those who want to at least pretend to go off road….and with a more rugged interior as well. That’s a market they’ll miss with this “Urban Utility Vehicle”…..make an Rural Utility Version!
Except, then you fall into the problem that the H2 and H3 fell into: that they became labeled as laughable trash. If people want an offroad truck, they're probably going for a Gladiator. This vehicle was specifically designed to be its own market.
I like it - it is a bit weird but more useful than my Miata. It called up images of my first car in Seattle - a 1951 Chevy businessman's coup. (Mine had a 55 pickup engine and transmission) I dunno if they will sell - I liked the Brat and Baja but never bought one.
The problem with it is the bed is so short, after initial infatuation people will be asking themselves, what is the advantage over an SUV? In many ways it is even less practical because you can't fold the seats to extend loading space. Perhaps if they cut the cabin to a single bench up front with minimal extension space behind, and extend the bed to 6.5 ft, it might succeed. As is, I am afraid it will end up the same way as Subaru Baja.
The phrase that makes a consumer shutter: available options. Getting to the point where dealerships can advertise the vehicle for a dollar pending sufficient “up-grade” purchase of accessories . . .
Nice lines. Reminds me of the Chevrolet pick up they made for awhile. My wife and I both have the 2013 Honda Ridgeline. Really like that look. Not so much the new Ridgeline they look too conventional.
14:20 "modern day El Camino" -- *** Earth to Tom *** This thing has a bed of just over 4 ft., El Camino had a 6 ft bed. If you do not understand the difference in practicality and usability, ask someone.
It looks very ,very nice but I see legroom in the back is a little tight. The other negative is the gas mileage 22 or 23 miles per gallon for a small vehicle is not very good.
I see a marketing opportunity for someone creating a 3D printed visor for that driver information screen in front of the steering wheel. With only 22mpg on the 2.5L Turbo, seems like the hybrid drive from the Tucson would be an ideal addition for next years' model.
Whatever it is? I think this vehicle is great, I don't see why people are talking shit? You can get a chevy colorado with 4 doors and the bed being short and it's no big deal, this comes out and people are going nuts saying it's not a pick up, who cares? You pay for what you want, it's a great vehicle either way, it could be suv or pick up, if you are a city guy that goes out of town with family? This is ur vehicle.
love this. I'm definitely the target market for this. just needs a volume knob, more actual buttons, and rear heated seats. hopefully will be addressed in subsequent model years, then I'm in.
I love the looks of the Santa Cruz, yet I'd much better prefer the basic Maverick for its starting price point, fuel efficiency, and a bit more practicality. Then again, this Hyundai is gorgeous.
"it suffers from making too much sense" -- Too much sense to whom? To a few hipsters who want to impress their friends? It is useless as a pickup, and won't even take bikes on the back. Its short bed is a stupid compromise. They should cut the cabin to one row and extend the bed to 6.5 ft to make it useful. It will end up exactly the same way as Subaru Baja -- a bunch of city slickers will say "oh, how cute", and then no one will buy it.

They're going to sell every single one they build. The looks alone are enough.
jesus hell you must have bad eye sight then...the new hyundai front ends look like sheer shit to my eyes and everyone i talk to
Looks cheap
not at 41k tho
no chance.
Almost like you don’t have to buy the 40k trim
I always loved the style of the Subaru Brat growing up and the Baja later in life. I hope the Santa Cruz sticks around long enough for me to get around to my next vehicle... I like it and would consider it if I were shopping for a vehicle now.
Tom. You really do know how to discribe a car. It's the best anyone can get as an information. Keep it up
I'm really liking this vehicle!
It may very well be the first vehicle that gets me out of my VW GTI. (had two of them since 2011)
It's such a cool, versatile vehicle that looks great, works on the road, and mildly off of it, and the price is so reasonable!
Maverick is much bigger and better fuel efficiency and better looking.
and cheaper.
@@tocreatee3585 yuuup that's why I just ordered one 🤗
@@godfreydaniel6278... the discontinued Ranger was a great small truck.
Just bought the 2023 and am loving it!
A real shame they do not have a two door extra cab model. A lot of us seniors don't need a back seat and two extra doors.
Great Review Tom!!
This Santa Cruz looks great and can’t wait to see it in person. Hyundai is going to sell a ton of these and possibly one to me in the next year. (I’ll follow your advice and test drive at least three vehicles)
You are going to Love it. We love ours. It's so fun to drive.
I like it! It's about time someone took chance to bring something different to the market. Really cool car; looks nice, practical, and awesome tech.
It's just a Subaru Brat. What's so new about it? It has a useless little bed just like a Brat. It's not a truck... like a Brat. You can't even fit two bicycles in the bed! It's just a car without a trunk lid. 🤏
Yeah, Honda brought us the Ridgeline in 2006. This is a smaller version of that.
ILIKE IT TOO. I just HOPE THE AWD is GOOD IN THE SNOW.
@@gwcrispi nothing like eather one Nothing! This is Really different. I bought one. I am 6.1 and 280 and it's got plenty of room.
Its an awesome platform but IMO there are 2 things missing. #1 PHEV. Bump up the fuel economy and make it partial zero emission for short trips. #2 Passthrough from the bed into the passenger compartment. I want to be able to load up my ski gear and a short bed won't cut it.
Then GET a sedan!
More like an Ozzy ute then an US pickup, we need more of them.
No option for an opening in the bed though to carry longer things.
@@jody024 - Does the tailgate count?
@joseph boyat - Only if you are a mechanic.
Reminds me of my 2006 Subaru Baja. Which I miss dearly. This would be a great replacement!
Except Subie had a better all wheel drive and a much better engine.
I apprciate using the footage of Kieth. Sure helps break things up and gave me a chuckle. Especially after seeing 100 people talk about this car.
Keith was awesome
Seems like a perfect weekend warrior/second family vehicle. Kudos to Hyundai for taking a risk on this, and Tom for another flawless review.
We are getting 29 and 32 with our sel premium. Love it .A Rocket Ship. Every Where we go it gets people coming up to us . Older guys Love it .Its like our favorite Hot Wheels.
Its really growing on me. Yep, I'm an older guy. I still haven't seen one in person yet.
None of the dealers in my area have them available.
So you have the non-turbo?
Dunno why, but I'm more interested on the Santa Cruz than the Maverick; especially the base model SE which is already enough for most buyers anyway.
Sameeee
So, this a four-door Ranchero (or El Camino if you prefer that manufacturer).
It might've been worth considering if it had been a two door cab with a longer bed.
I wonder if they will make a cap to at least provide a "full height" bed that protects big cargo from the weather.
I like the Santa Cruz. People want the tough body shape. However a wagon with a more versatile load area makes more sense for me
My GTI scoots to 60 in around 6 seconds and everyone thinks that's fast... but the Cruz seems to be decent competition against it!
@@christopherprose3881 Get it chipped... a whole different ballgame.
Ok, it is feeling like they need to just offer the rearward facing seats for the box.
this channel came out in my recommendations. excellent editing and production value. loved the review, just subscribed.
Base engine is the 2.5GDI/MPI used in the base Sonata. On AWD it might be a bit weak
Finally the ebargo is over on this one, and my favorite local reviewer is on the case!
I need someone to release a lowering kit for this ASAP
Or for some of us, a LIFT kit!
The mpg's seem like they should be better.
Yep. I basically get the same mileage in my ‘17 Ridgeline
Evil brother: I'da stepped on that tonneau cover.
Thanks, Tom. Great review. As usual.
Keith was fantastic
Would like a similar Hilux small pickup. Bring in an affordable low tech version with optional 5 speed.
The Maverick has sold out for the 2022 model year. Poor Ford? No. Ford got it right.
Really enjoy Tom's style of presentation. Seriously thinking about getting a 2025 facelifted Santa Cruz with the volume knob and potentially in red!
I hope it succeeds as well. Great review as always. ‘Keith stopped for a hard look’ made me laugh. I had a sport trac back in the day and loved it.
First time seeing your reviews - and it was good - insightful and fair. Good job.
I love this. It is evocative of the old Subaru Brat (or Baja as mentioned).
I'm just simply amazed
I feel like the fuel efficiency is killer here... Hyundai seems to have trouble with this.
Better fuel efficiency would make it underpowered. That’s not what we want in a 4x4 vehicle. Go buy a Prius
Hyundai has a great 200 hp 4 cylinder diesel in Europe, but the American market is too different perhaps.
Yeah 22 mpg combined is brutal. I get that the truck firm factor has more drag than a crossover like the Tucson but still. They need to bring the hybrid over from that at least.
@@Arcticfox7 Ford maverick is looking like it will be close to 30 mpg combined on AWD versions
The Hyundai/Kia motors are behind others in the mpg game for some reason.
Standard wireless android auto/apple carplay is only on the smaller infotainment screen. The 10.25" screen is wired.
Lol.
I hope I can attend one of your tapings should I be able to visit Seattle this year. A fan from the Philippines here.
I kinda like it, but wish Hyundai would have offered a hybrid/PHEV option. I'll stick with my order on a new PHEV Tucson Limited.
Is it just me or am I seeing flashbacks of the Isuzu VehiCross in the Santa Cruz when the white one was displayed right before this green one at 1:24 mark
The only thing that's gonna make this fall is the price. It must must be cheaper than an equivalent full size pickup. If I was 22 I'd buy one
22/23 average MPG isn’t great. That’s what I average in my ‘19 Ranger FX4 that’s lifted and has AT tires. 😬
That's what I'm saying! My Tacoma TRD off road got about 18 city/ 22 hwy. At least the Maverick will get good fuel economy.
Those rangers get horrible gas mileage so your full of crap
@@josexavierfernandez8268 this gets 27 on the highway btw
@@rustler08 Gladiator sells for $70,000
It reminds me of the old elcamino from years ago, but this is a beautiful vehicle!
My 1970 elcamino is beautiful...
I love it!!!! Sure it's a niche vehicle, but this is 2021.. I'm sure it'll sell thousands!!!
I like it - it is a bit weird but more useful than my Miata. It called up images of my first car in Seattle - a 1951 Chevy businessman's coup. (Mine had a 55 pickup engine and transmission) I dunno if they will sell - I liked the Brat and Baja but never bought one.
Hyundai is killing it
The flicker is because your camera frame rate is not evenly divisible to the refresh rate of the lcd.
Getting to the point where dealerships can advertise the vehicle for a dollar pending sufficient “up-grade” purchase of accessories . . .
Keith @5:19 sold me on this vehicle. Done and done
Nice lines. Reminds me of the Chevrolet pick up they made for awhile. My wife and I both have the 2013 Honda Ridgeline. Really like that look. Not so much the new Ridgeline they look too conventional.
You said the infotainment has wireless carplay, that's not true. Only the base 8" has wireless, the upgraded infotainment one in yours is wired only.
Hyundai should make an N version of this lol. How hilariously wonderful would that be, with e-diff and cracks and pops from exhaust😂👍.
14:20 "modern day El Camino" -- *** Earth to Tom *** This thing has a bed of just over 4 ft., El Camino had a 6 ft bed. If you do not understand the difference in practicality and usability, ask someone.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the sport Trac was built on an actual truck platform. I don't know that it's the same as any of these.
Nothing like it, except for the Honda Ridgeline that’s been in production since 2006.
It looks very ,very nice but I see legroom in the back is a little tight. The other negative is the gas mileage 22 or 23 miles per gallon for a small vehicle is not very good.
Didn’t show electrical plug in storage bed and if you want volume knob you have one on steering wheel.
Cool truck! The only flaw? The turn signals point in the wrong direction.
I see a marketing opportunity for someone creating a 3D printed visor for that driver information screen in front of the steering wheel. With only 22mpg on the 2.5L Turbo, seems like the hybrid drive from the Tucson would be an ideal addition for next years' model.
No visor needed, it is bright and crisp, much like the Porsche Taycan’s
Whatever it is? I think this vehicle is great, I don't see why people are talking shit? You can get a chevy colorado with 4 doors and the bed being short and it's no big deal, this comes out and people are going nuts saying it's not a pick up, who cares? You pay for what you want, it's a great vehicle either way, it could be suv or pick up, if you are a city guy that goes out of town with family? This is ur vehicle.
Interesting ideas - power actuated rear trank (such a worthless expansive feature) and manual cheep stick to support heavy hood.
I have a 23 sel with activity package and it’s perfect
You get a lot of vehicle and one of the best warranty's in the market. Subaru, wake up.
Great info as always Tom.
As for the car, it suffers from making too much sense and I'm afraid that is its biggest flaw.
@@mountainhobo have you even bothered watching the video? It's not meant to compete with trucks and several times it is shown loading bikes.
