Yeah, I'm sure they'd sell a lot more of them with the base engine and lower price point but I'm sure Hyundai Canada had a good reason for that. I'd love to hear it. Either way, not my kind of vehicle. I'll stick with my aging and fully paid for (and still very reliable) Toyota Tundra and Corolla.
@@robertfletcher2974 Yes, I've seen it online already, Toyota really outdid themselves, but I'll wait a while and get a used one, and drive my current Tundra a few years more.
After waiting for the release of the Santa Cruz Ultimate and seeing what you got for the money in terms of size and amenities, I bought a Ridgeline Touring. I would have loved the cool display, etc, but the cabin size and bed size and the ride of the larger vehicle won out. The 2021 Ridgeline has a nicer ride than my 2017 Buick Lacrosse Premium, IMHO.
@@1Mhoram9 I sat in one to confirm that the size of the interior compared to the Ridgeline is markedly smaller. After that combined with the bed size I had to officially bail on it. It's a shame since I was really looking forward to this vehicle. I'm sure it will make a lot of satisfied owners.
I keep hearing people complains that Hyundai/Kia don't have wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay for the top trim. I say it's good marketing strategy for Hyundai to include that on the lower trims..Most domestic brands will only make that feature specifically only for the top trim. Hyundai/Kia made it standard for the average Joe to have. That's how you cut competition. Kudos to Hyundai/Kia for that.
Awesome review as always thank you, very objective, and I agree 💯 % with your opinions. It would be awesome if they came out with a hybrid, and then a plug-in hybrid version which of course is expected and will probably match the Tucson. If they offer a hybrid option and drop the price a little bit more to be competitive with the maverick I think that they would sell much better but we haven’t seen the numbers yet as it just came out so time will tell. It is incredibly unique I think it looks great, and good job Hyundai for being daring.
Thanks Andrea and Zack for reviewing the Santa Cruz! Been waiting for a real world review for this vehicle. Would love to see a comparo between this and the Maverick... at $46k you can negotiate that price for a 2021 Ridgeline EX-L!!!! Rather have the Honda!
Dual clutch and turbo 4 - sounds like a possible nightmare as it ages. I know Hyundai reliability has vastly improved but it still could be a costly choice
Ive got a 2018 elantra sport with the 1.6 turbo... 30,000 miles on it now. Mechanically knock on wood its been fine but the DCT has become very jerky during stop and go traffic. A couple of times i noticed my car did not move even though the revs went up....it was in drive but failed to get into gear for a good 3 seconds. Power has been great for a little compact car but how I wish hyundai/kia would've offered an automatic instead of the dct.
Yeah, Hyundai reliability is getting better, but they've still got a ways to go. I'd rather put that money towards a used Toyota Tacoma as Zach suggested.
@@reallyrandomrides1296 yeah exactly! I am also going to change brands just because of the DCT. 90% hyundai kia cars with decent power come with the DCT... how i wish the corolla came with a turbo 4 with about 200ish horses.
@@Brian-jv8iy I don't know... it seems people either love or hate Hyundais. They either find them reliable or not, there's no in-between. I personally know of people who have purchased several Hyundais in a row and been very pleased with them. And others who bought just one, had never-ending, often serious problems and vowed never to buy one again. Against my better judgement, I bought a 2015 Santa Fe that always seemed to need something fixed, often at my expense, though occasionally under warranty. It didn't take me long to trade it in for an older, used Toyota. I regret deviating from Toyota and will stick with them from now on.
Nice pick-up with a beautiful interior. Yes, without a lower trim available people will drive pass the Hyundai dealership on their way to buy the Ford Maverick.
So many people have asked me about the (then) upcoming Santa Cruz. Nobody (well only 1 person) has asked me a single question about Ford’s Maverick. The Ford, I expect, will sell incredibly. This Hyundai looks spectacular. It will also sell well... despite it’s price. And as the DesRosiers Automotive Consultant Group has recently pointed out, that the average Canadian new light duty passenger vehicle is currently just north of $40,000... which is where it has priced itself (base). I believe that the Santa Cruz is trying to become ‘the latest’ trendy stylish product, whilst The Maverick will pick up all of the regular/average family (or person) and utilitarian sales (including corporate/small businesses). I was waiting to to see your review/thoughts on this product. Very good points. Thanks for the video.
Agrees. I would imagine that most of those beautiful yards during those test drives that you pass have landscapers that would embrace the short box and the hybrid fuel savings.
WOW! That’s awesome vehicle. Love Displays and a lot of storages! About power seats, I hope it’s height adjustment and they should include a power seat on the passenger. 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️
Love the idea of Sports Adventure Vehicle. Perfect for city and suburban environment! Unfortunately, Hyundai has become quite expensive and is no longer a budget / value for money purchase. You must really love the vehicle to pay for it! But I think the Santa Cruz will be a better seller than the Tucson!
Many reviewers have commented on the wonderfully-low base price of the Maverick, *especially* with its standard hybrid powertrain. I'm no fan of the quality and reliability of Ford vehicles, in general, and now, here's one expressly designed to be unusually inexpensive? It should be no surprise that you don't get something for nothing (IF it were to be built by Toyota, that might be a different story). Hyundai has a far-from-sterling reputation, as well, but in this case, I'd definitely take the Santa Cruz (but at a lower trim level).
Rains in BC?? No way!! HAHA!! I live in Wa. state, and yes, we get rained on up here. A lot! Great review, by the way! Sounds like the turbo engine is definitely the way to go!
Im not a big fan of that look. I was in the market for a new car and I think Maverick has this car beat. The price is too steep, whats stopping me from just getting a bigges SUV or a normal Pickup truck? IMHO Maverick’s pricing is on point and you cant beat that hybrid fuel economy. Thanks for the review!! You guys are awesome
creature comforts are all people want....i'm fine with the base model of 23K here in the usa or the mid trim level...this and the maverick are 2 totally different beasts and for 2 totally different people's needs...sanat cruz is great for driving around and still get stuff done....feel like you not driving a big hunk sheet metal around....this is for the adventure people too, fishing, camping, beach, snorkeling, hiking, kids who play sports, etc...
We are baby boomers and we are crazy about this vehicle. We’re trading in our 2028 sport Elantra sedan and that’s how we’re able to afford the steep price. We have an Audi A3 and a Nissan Titan so this half SUV half truck is perfect for vacay and urban shopping. I think young people will also love it for off road and for tailgating. It’s going to work for both demographics. Soccer moms are probably still going to prefer their vans and minivans.
Great balanced overview of a unique, practical and fun vehicle, like a modern version of the El Camino or Ranchero... Mullet edition :) Andrea looks great in double blue also, even better than Jay Leno! :) Hopefully a hybrid will be available, along with a more affordable Canadian version at some point.
well..I did not have a hand in the advertising...but maybe a career change..lol.agree,,I kinda like the look..not something you see everyday...and not a huge vehicle to get around in...but the price...and why no entry level in Canada...choice is what people want...have a feeling a base and mid level will be coming soon,,,then maybe will take a closer look...thanks,alot of good info..and enjoyed the review...have a great day
I have no use for the pickup bed, it might actually be a drawback for me, but I would get this because it's not that expensive and it's just cool looking.
Looks are subjective but I'm a fan. I am tempted to give this vehicle a look but I'm not a fan of the lack of physical dials and buttons. I find that very distracting. Also trying to wrap my head around a Hyundai as a friend just had to replace an engine in a 5.5 year old one. That was 6500.00 he won't get back.
the DSC was a bad choice for this. I know three different people who have had their DSC transmissions in their Tucson's die horribly within the first year of ownership. Putting such a non-traditional transmission on this car is going to fail.....should have just stuck with one of their other regular transmissions. It's sad - I love the way this car looks and I'm sure it drives great - but I wouldn't touch one of Hyundai/Kia's DSC transmissions with a ten foot pole. Awesome review as always.
I think it looks pretty damn cool. It ain't ugly. Get your kid to SpecSavers. The lack of a volume knob and HVAC buttons is a deal breaker for me. I'd buy a Ridgeline before this, even though this is a great looking, smaller package.
Exactly what I said prior to getting a Tucson hybrid. But turns out no knobs is fine. You use the steering wheel for volume and most people barely touch A/C anyway.
I just got my Santa Cruz and I’m in Saskatchewan. Over Christmas we drove to our daughters cabin on snow covered roads. When we arrived and opened tailgate to take out gifts the box had 2” of snow in it. Did you notice anything driving in rain? I can’t put anything of value back there like I could with my Adrenalin-it never leaked even dust
I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a Maverick, with the hybrid engine, in a year or two. The excellent fuel economy is important to me and I've read that the hybrid engined Maverick can be flat-towed behind a motorhome. I've looked at purchasing a used Ranger to tow behind my motor home (unfortunately, I sold my very reliable 2000 Ranger six years ago), but the prices are way too high. Not Tacoma high, but still higher than I want to pay.
I could see the appeal for this vehicle for some. Kayaking and bike trails are where I find myself and I could use this. Mostly a car but it can get me to the trail head. They will narrow the trims I expect. I would drive one...can't wait to see one on the road.
Yes you can. It has the same setup as the ford Maverick. You adjust the tailgate and the 4x8 sits on top of the wheel wells and over the back of the tailgate when lowered
If you ignore the busy, ugly front end with 10 different lights, this is a very, very nice, clean looking car with excellent proportions. Good power, quick, decent ground clearance and wheel size, AWD, 8 speed dual clutch...wow, this could work. If they advertise it as a truck it will fail compared to Tacoma or something like that but if they advertise it as an "adventure vehicle" they could be onto something. I wish there was an option for a 6 speed manual.
I hope this new vehicle segment does well. I would love to see offerings from Honda, Subaru and Toyota. What about Mazda? They used to make small pickups.
After you see the "nipples" above the wheels, you can't unsee them. The Ford Maverick is slower and cheaper, but their hybrids and the turbo-4 from their Exploder are not known for being reliable- if you get the turbo, use a high quality 0w-16 synthetic oil changed every 5 thousand miles. See the Project Farm videos for testing oil brands.
Make compare between Honda ridgeline Vs Hyundai Santa Cruz and ford maverick Why they use unibody style ,for trucks their, usually used body on frame for other brands truck
Because most people who buy it will use it for commuting in the city on all season street tires, never tow anything or go off-road so a car based unibody and FWD or AWD is fine. In reality, they'd be just fine with a hatchback or sedan but people insist on having a "truck" 😐I use my 4x4 Tundra for towing, going off-road, using it like a truck, not a car.
I'm 71 and I love this "mullet"!

Also, Hyundai has the best warranty. 🏆🏆🏆
I’m not a Truck lover but this Hyundai Sanata Cruze is my favourite and will be the reason I will ever want to buy a Truck. What I like about is the Mini sport stylist look between SUV and Pick up combination. This is a City friendly Truck, good for family.

Wish they had the base engine as an option in Canada, 40k for the current base is a but much even though it is well equipped
@@reallyrandomrides1296 the new tundra looks nice
@@robertfletcher2974 Yes, I've seen it online already, Toyota really outdid themselves, but I'll wait a while and get a used one, and drive my current Tundra a few years more.
Is this model also becoming a Mild Hybrid/Light Hybrid model version?. 🤔
Thanks for sharing, enjoy your Ridgeline.
Did you test drive the Santa Cruz?
Reminds me of the Subaru Baja and El Camino
I wish it had the comfort setting and the heads up display like the Santa Fe for longer drives.
Very interesting! In my days, the Plastic Fantastic was my 1976 Corvette!
Thanks for watching and for the kind words.
Thanks for watching, happy you liked the review.
Yep, the best thing to happen to the Honda Ridgeline is the invention of this and the Maverick.
Get 2 Mavericks instead.
Amazing vehicle from Hyundai. Very informative review!

Andrea has brought so much color to your channel . A car chick .... priceless .
@@Brian-jv8iy cause the hyundais of the past had regular auto transmissions man. We here are talking bout the dual clutch transmissions.
That built in tono cover takes up too much space. Other than that it looks great and will definitely be used by the DIY person.
It's "tonneau" cover.

I prefer to have it. Especially if I'm carrying luggage and prevent it for getting wet from rain.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Maverick will sell well to small businesses for delivery with hybrid.
Agrees. I would imagine that most of those beautiful yards during those test drives that you pass have landscapers that would embrace the short box and the hybrid fuel savings.
@@kellingtonlink956 They run cab-over small diesel trucks from Japan.

It really is a great vehicle, I had a lot of fun with it and I agree, plenty of storage everywhere.
@@andreaspencer9813 Exactly! 😀
Loving my ride and planning on taking it all over Florida
People stop to see what this is and fall in love. This is a woman’s vehicle. Love it 🥰
Didn't Subaru already tried this and it failed? Wonder how this will sell?
But everyone wants a Baja now.
Given Hyundai engine woes, its hard to say.
At the time Suburu was competing with Chevy S10 and Ford Ranger.
Neither of those compact trucks exist now.
Any word when a hybrid version will come? Is it likely?
Many reviewers have commented on the wonderfully-low base price of the Maverick, *especially* with its standard hybrid powertrain. I'm no fan of the quality and reliability of Ford vehicles, in general, and now, here's one expressly designed to be unusually inexpensive? It should be no surprise that you don't get something for nothing (IF it were to be built by Toyota, that might be a different story). Hyundai has a far-from-sterling reputation, as well, but in this case, I'd definitely take the Santa Cruz (but at a lower trim level).
Ford's secret with the low price on the Maverick is Made in Mexico.
This thing is funky like the El Camino. This would have been a cool EV.
Rains in BC?? No way!! HAHA!! I live in Wa. state, and yes, we get rained on up here. A lot! Great review, by the way! Sounds like the turbo engine is definitely the way to go!
I love it. I want it. In stone blue. Gonna get it!!!
You really have to want a vehicle like this, and probably a fan of the brand to spend almost $40k CAD at this.
Yes, I know people who have purchased this and just love the look of it. They want the practicality of a pick up but don't want a large vehicle.
I had no problem paying for the Ultimate. I deal with a small town dealership and last time I checked, they have sold 17 already.
It looks good !! Thx for the review
Beautiful car, lovely couple!
Thank you so much!
My pleasure 🙂
Thanks so much, really glad you liked it.

Great review~ 👍
Thank you!
Charm of this truck is because it is a rather compact little truck. That's why it drives so nice.
Glad I watched this. I think I’m going to go with this over that Mazda crossover plug in ev.
I have no use for the pickup bed, it might actually be a drawback for me, but I would get this because it's not that expensive and it's just cool looking.
Do you think there will be a hybrid?
Looks are subjective but I'm a fan. I am tempted to give this vehicle a look but I'm not a fan of the lack of physical dials and buttons. I find that very distracting. Also trying to wrap my head around a Hyundai as a friend just had to replace an engine in a 5.5 year old one. That was 6500.00 he won't get back.
Will you be reviewing the 2024 model?
I live an hour away from Santa Cruz. The beach boardwalk has burgers and fries to sit at while looking at the beach.
Hi guys, will you guys do a review on the the 2023 GMC Sierra? Preferably the 2.7L engine. I'm curious of your thoughts.
the DSC was a bad choice for this.
Is it out in US yet? I’m wanting to test drive
Love the Closed Captions for the hearing impaired.
Cool but a little too pricey. Would have liked to see the US option of the 2.5 with the regular automatic transmission. Thanks for the review!
I wonder if Hyundai Canada will add this eventually, we will have to see. Thanks for watching!
I think I'll go for the Honda Ridgeline more cargo room in the bed and a v6 plus Honda reliable track record
Regular or Premium gas..... ??
I think it looks pretty damn cool. It ain't ugly. Get your kid to SpecSavers.
The lack of a volume knob and HVAC buttons is a deal breaker for me. I'd buy a Ridgeline before this, even though this is a great looking, smaller package.
Volume Knobs is a deal breaker ?
Seams kinda petty. The volume control on the steering wheel should be enough.
Exactly what I said prior to getting a Tucson hybrid. But turns out no knobs is fine. You use the steering wheel for volume and most people barely touch A/C anyway.
El Camino and Ranchero drivers rejoice!
Not sure when you filmed this, but ontario just got over the rain storm. Non stop for 2 days.
love it!
I wonder, could you also pick up things at CDN Tire? What about Home Hardware or Sobeys garden centre?
Might work there too...

I could see the appeal for this vehicle for some. Kayaking and bike trails are where I find myself and I could use this. Mostly a car but it can get me to the trail head. They will narrow the trims I expect. I would drive one...can't wait to see one on the road.
Can you fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back?
Yes you can. It has the same setup as the ford Maverick. You adjust the tailgate and the 4x8 sits on top of the wheel wells and over the back of the tailgate when lowered
Yeah…I can definitely picture Zach with a mullet back in the day😂
If you ignore the busy, ugly front end with 10 different lights, this is a very, very nice, clean looking car with excellent proportions.
For those who remember the Subaru Baja or Brat. I really like this model!
Make compare between Honda ridgeline Vs Hyundai Santa Cruz and ford maverick
Why they use unibody style ,for trucks their, usually used body on frame for other brands truck
