I think it was a pretty fair overall assessment on the Santa Cruz. There is SO MUCH to like about this vehicle - especially the way it drives. Reviewers seem to struggle to categorize the Santa Cruz. Some see it as a short bed pickup. Not really accurate and a description that Hyundai soundly rejects. Others see it as a crossover with a bed. Again misleading, I think. And certainly not comparable to the Hyundai Tucson that's over a foot less in length. The Santa Cruz is even 8" longer than a Santa Fe. To me, the Santa Cruz is more like a (slightly lifted) midsize sedan with a short pickup bed in place of a trunk. It's only about 3" longer than a Hyundai Sonata and in its fully loaded top trim has many of the same bells and whistles. As far as comparisons with the Maverick is concerned, from the information available it appears the two vehicles are significantly different. The Maverick is considerably "truck-ier". Not surprising in view of the fact that Ford's lineup in the US so heavily truck-centric. Consumers looking for a truck are almost certain to visit a Ford dealer. If they show up at a Hyundai dealer it's an error. Add the substantial Ford fleet sales compared to Hyundai and there's little likelihood that Hyundai will sell even a quarter as many Santa Cruzes as Ford's sales of Mavericks. But that's not necessarily bad news for the Santa Cruz. Although the Santa Cruz is unique in the North American market, it resembles another product sold in international markets (especially in Australia where it's quite popular). The VW Amarok's bed is about a foot longer than the Santa Cruz (5' vs 4'), a difference that makes it about 10" longer overall. Unlike the unibody Santa Cruz, it's a traditional ladder frame utility vehicle with stronger off-road chops than the Santa Cruz and and both 4 and V6 diesel engines. Nevertheless, it projects the same overall look and feel and the "adventure" vibe the Santa Cruz is meant to embody. In that context it's worth noting that Australia is an important market for Hyundai. It may well be that the success of VW's Amarok there suggested to Hyundai that a similar concept might work in North America. In any case Hyundai turned over the design of the Santa Cruz to their California design studio to come up with a design for a similar vehicle that reflects American tastes. It's also noteworthy that Hyundai chose to put the corporate 2.5L four banger in the Santa Cruz. In turbo form it's an engine now standard or optional in at least 8(!) Hyundai, KIA, and Genesis vehicles and coupled with the 8 speed DCT in at least five. It's appears to be an excellent choice with strong performance and better fuel economy than a V6. Is the DCT the best choice for serious "off-roading" ? Not really. But that's not the intended mission of the Santa Cruz. It's a great engine for daily use and for loads that are unsuitable for a sedan's trunk or an SUV's interior cargo space. A couple of years ago in a review of the Amarok I asked why Australians would choose it over an SUV with a similar size cargo hold The answer I quickly received was that coming home with a dead deer in the bed was preferable to sharing it with passengers. OK, 'nuff said. All in all, the Santa Cruz is a niche vehicle. But I suspect it will be successful enough to justify Hyundai's investment.
Good review as usual. But a lot of folks are turned off but the digital HVAC system. What happened to physical buttons? So this is a huge problem for Hyundai in general. Who says the cabin should look like a cockpit of Boeing 747? Underpowered American brands look a lot more appealing despite ridiculous “well the whole industry in moving in that direction” thing.
I wish it came in better colors. I wish it had a pass-through hatchway between the bed wall and folding rear seats to let you haul longer items. For the price, a cheap- feeling passenger seat - actually ANY seat, is a big fat omission. Wouldn't regular 'ol knobs on the console just BE BETTER than touchscreen everything? For all the clever, weird, nicely considered thoughts put into this vehicle, there's a few things I still wish it had and a few it did away with. At the MSRP, it might be more attractive in 5 years after depreciation. I suppose I could forgive a few things after a several- thousand dollars drop in price. Good review.
I like this vehicle. good looking and does the job it was built to do well. the only reason I wouldn't buy it is for my purposes the bed is too short and, I'm not a fan of 4 Cyl engines.
That's what they say and they won't be able to fix it till the 2023s. I've never used Android auto so I may not miss it. Still has Bluetooth connectivity and wireless charging.
i seen this vehicle in pictures at the chevy dealer, but really didn't pay much attention who was going to make it, and i thought wow now thats a very sharp looking vehicle, this was a few yrs back and here iam looking at it now woww, i think Hyundai will be successful with this vehicle, i believe the timing is right this time around and plus we needed a drastic new design with these vehicle and hyundai had the courage to do it they pulled out all the stops and for broke, lol God willing iam thinkin of really buying one i have a full size truck but would be nice to have this as a second vehicle.
Well, larger Hyundai dealers are getting in a few at a time, and right on cue, they are jacking up the prices claiming demand reasons. My wife has been waiting eagerly for it’s release, and now her dream vehicle has become monetarily unattainable. What a letdown, but not surprised. Price gouging should be against the law!
I would suggest calling around to other dealers outside your area. I was able to find quite a few dealers she did not charge what is called, ADM, which is additional dealer markup. Order whatever you want and then wait for your perfect vehicle to arrive. It may take longer than expected but at least you’ll get what you want
My Dealership in Richmond Va Refuses to do that! They sale on line too ! West Broad Hyundai ask for Tim ! They also gave me very good trade almost what I paid 3 years ago new ! I had a Kia soul turbo plus/ GT
These small pickups are very popular in many parts of Asia. VW, Peugeot, Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ford, and Toyota have always sold compact pickups abroad.
Lauren, I worry about the durability of the DCT and turbo with towing heavy loads. Thinking that there will be lots of burnt clutch packs with the DCT... Excellent review as always 👏
That's a good point but hopefully the NA/torque converter trans is chosen here, despite less torque. Watching channels like thus gives you car smarts, maybe ALL salesmen should subscribe too💡😇🤔
@@klasseact6663 Problem with choosing the NA 2.5L and 8spd TC Auto is the towing capacity diminishes. For the full 5K lb towing capacity, you have to opt for the upper trims with the 2.5T and DCT.
@@wbwayne8887 well my buddy and I were talking about this yesterday and concluded that Hyundai did plenty of testing of the drivetrain pulling weight. Full size with virtually no options. Maverick also less features, less payload, less towing. Better fuel efficiency though. That's about it. 40 grand is not that expensive considering inflation and the market.
They don't have production for it. It's only being built in Alabama where they expect to build less Sonatas and Elantra due to reduced demand in sedans...
Is there a Santa Cruise hybrid coming out? If so 50 mpg would sell like crazy the Maverick hybrid gets 42 mpg? The Santa Cruise looks definitely better.
Looks WAAAAAY better than the Maverick❗ Speaking of that, why does Ford have such a problem coming up with NEW names for NEW cars (Mach-e, Lightning and Maverick) I'm pretty sure I read/heard somewhere the T-bird name was trademarked🤔 Great review Lauren as always👍👍

I have $1,000 deposit on the $70,000 rivian that I won't be pulling the trigger on. Makes the Santa Cruz look inexpensive. Also the rivian is about 10 in wider which makes it a much more difficult vehicle to get around in. I might just get this one instead. My local dealer here in Colorado said he's getting nine vehicles in sometime in September and five are already reserved.
Every reviewer keeps talking about the resemblance to the Tucson. I have NO interest in the Tucson nor do I care one little bit about the "Easter Eggs! BFD to both. That said, I am planing on buying one.
It's illegal in California to hang anything in the front windshield except in the left lower area. Looks like the camera is obstructing the line of sight while driving.
Wow, that camera mount on the windshield right in from you! I've never seen a reviewer do that. Completely unsafe; not just for you but those around you on a windy road. Even the bulk of it (suction cups) appear to be right in you line of sight.
Is 2” much bigger? I don’t think so. Ford hasn’t released fuel economy numbers for the non hybrid yet. But yes the base Maverick is cheaper and gets more MPG.
@@willie9397 not sure where you got that from. ask all the ford 2.0 ecoboost owners whose head gaskets failed. then, ask all the focus owners who sued over cvt failures. and, best of all, hyundai does not use takata grenades, err, airbags.

Take in account that she is like 5' tall, for people vertically challenged most car seats are not very comfortable 🤷♂️ As far as Maverick comparison, Santa Cruz has better seats and in general it has higher quality interior
Lots of reviews of both these vehicles and when taken in totality there is no clear winner so it comes down to what you like. For me the Maverick wins out in key areas like better mileage, more usable bed, and price. The Maverick kills it in the looks department, I don't care for the wacky Subie Bratt look. I didn't like it when I was a kid and still don't. It's a stretch to call either one fuel efficient in non hybrid form! 19/27 MPG? Get real that is full size truck territory. The Maverick hybrid will win over plenty of small car buyers with its price point and MPG nobody can touch it right now, and its worth pointing out the Maverick hybrid system and transmission is highly regarded. Its a good thing for Hyundai Ford doesn't offer the Maverick in AWD (yet). I test drove a Maverick (lowly XL AWD) and the build quality was impressive in my opinion. I especially liked the hard plastic but durable and attractive interior. Save the polystyrene foam and glued on wood accents for others. My only complaint about the Maverick is its not made in the USA! But heck can you blame them? I'm sure they don't have diversity managers educated in gender studies down there.
Curious about the click bait title of your video that asks a question that can't be answered without driving a Maverick? Sad that I had to give the video a view from the deceiving title just to give a thumbs down. Maybe next time do an actual review of the 2 trucks from actual experience with both instead of pretending you did with a deceiving video title.
Just on the paper though, Santa Cruz seems a lot better. Based on just observation of the RUclips reviews so far, Maverick is the one to get if you want base trim due to the MPG it gets, Santa Cruz is the one to get if you want top of the tier trim for its tech and load of features that come along with it.
It amazes me that you give good ratings on optional equipment but then would you give it a poor rating for the base model. As usual, customer beware that the manufacture bleeds you dry in America.
We put in a deposit to be early in the queue. Then yesterday went to see the car in a showroom. The Santa Cruz. It is SMALLER than any of these reviewers are revealing, there is NO BACK SEAT. The bed is not big enough for a 4x8 sheet wide or long. And the hype and skinny deliveries are driving dealership markups to absurd levels. Skip this one folks. Get a Honda Ridgeline instead.

Thumbs down if you saw how ridiculously long this post is, laughed, and moved on without reading it.
Great input, thanks for adding that.
Look at the Ranger and others. Agreed
The larger infotainment does not have wireless android auto/carplay, only the base 8" screen does.

Really good review, thank you! Liked and subscribed.
Just got the same exact vehicle and gonna be cruising all over the state of Florida. Code name: Blue Iguana
Great review!
I have one on order but I would have loved to have seen this made from the Santa Fe platform 🤷♂️🤷♂️
I must say it looks really good.
i seen this vehicle in pictures at the chevy dealer, but really didn't pay much attention who was going to make it, and i thought wow now thats a very sharp looking vehicle, this was a few yrs back and here iam looking at it now woww, i think Hyundai will be successful with this vehicle, i believe the timing is right this time around and plus we needed a drastic new design with these vehicle and hyundai had the courage to do it they pulled out all the stops and for broke, lol God willing iam thinkin of really buying one i have a full size truck but would be nice to have this as a second vehicle.
It has hidden kool stuff too ! Like if it gets to Hot In the Car! It cracks the window to let the heat out !
I think this would be the perfect kind of vehicle for fiat and also VW to have a truck.
VW has tried in the past with little success.
These small pickups are very popular in many parts of Asia. VW, Peugeot, Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Ford, and Toyota have always sold compact pickups abroad.
@@midnight4109 well I think people love trucks so it could work.
@@midnight4109 well its a new day and to say that it wont work not would be silly.
@@neubauerjoseph whether it would "work" is a good question, whether any of those companies will try to sell a truck in the U.S. is a better one.
i doubt about crossover definitely nice compact truck. similar to subaru baja, ford maverick. good vehicle i like watching her turn.
for those who have a short memory this is a El Camino on steroids , Hyundai may have looked back and seen the El Camino and said hmmm.
Lauren, I worry about the durability of the DCT and turbo with towing heavy loads. Thinking that there will be lots of burnt clutch packs with the DCT... Excellent review as always 👏
That's a good point but hopefully the NA/torque converter trans is chosen here, despite less torque. Watching channels like thus gives you car smarts, maybe ALL salesmen should subscribe too💡😇🤔
@@klasseact6663
Problem with choosing the NA 2.5L and 8spd TC Auto is the towing capacity diminishes. For the full 5K lb towing capacity, you have to opt for the upper trims with the 2.5T and DCT.
@@wbwayne8887 well my buddy and I were talking about this yesterday and concluded that Hyundai did plenty of testing of the drivetrain pulling weight. I know the DCT isn't really the best for towing but maybe there's a tow mode where it doesn't shift quite as fast. Keep in mind this is an automated manual and as we all know there's been stick shift trucks in the past.
@@klasseact6663
Good point, and I hope you're right. If I pull the trigger on one, it won't be for at least 2 years, so I will have plenty of time to sit back and observe the early adopters of the Santa Cruz.
@@wbwayne8887 shouldn't have to wait that long as it's based off of the Tuscon, maybe a year. I'm sure your not going to push the vehicle past its limits and that's key here. I'm sure it can tow 2 jet ski's or ATV's and gear in the short bed, no problem. For alot of people THIS is going to be perfect👍👍
why is everyone comparing this to the Maverick, no vehicle on earth looks like this Santa Cruz. The rest of the trucks including the Maverick all look alike just the way it is, plus this is a El Camino on steroids for those who have a short memory Hyundai must have looked back at that El Camino and thought to themselves hmmmm.
They say they built this for the techies but us Retired folks Love it! I took it to our Car Club Cruz in (no pun ) it drew a nice crowd! Hyundai Own me big for Selling this Vehicle but I have been watching and waiting for 10 years now ! The one thing Hyundai needs to fix it the tow package is about $800.buck not including install cost ! The dealership usely charge $ 100 per hr. This ante no frinkin chump change! And after market is not to be found! I know I looked everywhere! That Sucks!
Too expensive . I can get a full size truck for that 45k+ price . Maverick priced 10k cheaper when loaded with the extras.
Full size with virtually no options.
Maverick also less features, less payload, less towing. Better fuel efficiency though. That's about it.
40 grand is not that expensive considering inflation and the market.
45k you must be in Canada ouch.
I like that i can change color in all modes as i have mine in RED in all modes
Those wheels spinning backwards though! 😲
It's a visual play on your eyes when the wheels rotate faster than the frames/second of the video

Nice vehicle.
Could be my next transportation, tired of driving large trucks.
Hyundai made a mistake selling it exclusively in NA, this would sell well in tropical countries.
They don't have production for it. It's only being built in Alabama where they expect to build less Sonatas and Elantra due to reduced demand in sedans...
Florida is a tropical country 😎
Is there a Santa Cruise hybrid coming out? If so 50 mpg would sell like crazy the Maverick hybrid gets 42 mpg? The Santa Cruise looks definitely better.
I didn't see a button to turn off the auto start/stop. Are you able to turn it off at all? Or does the vehicle not have it?
No auto start / stop.
42,000$?!?? For that I could buy an f150 half ton!! Thats ridiculous.
Hyundai won't call the Santa Cruz a truck.
But my State Register does!
Called a SAV SPORT ADVENTURE VEHICLE
Looks WAAAAAY better than the Maverick❗ Speaking of that, why does Ford have such a problem coming up with NEW names for NEW cars (Mach-e, Lightning and Maverick) I'm pretty sure I read/heard somewhere the T-bird name was trademarked🤔

Several websites indicate that Santa Cruz is currently the fastest selling vehicle in the US.
Not sure you can call it better than the Maverick. It costs $4k more, doesn't come close to 40mpg, and the bed only holds 660lbs max. It's based off an on-road SUV while the Mav is based off the Ford Bronco, an off-road machine.
Where's the spare tire?
Under the truck bed. I checked. It's there lol
Underneath
Dumm question. How can you have a scoring system with out something to compair with. I was follow along. My scoring would be much lower. Is there such a thing as a ten 10?

Problem is is that the maverick has this thing be on price by a long shot
Two different cars, maverick is a bare bone truck, while Santa Cruz is a luxury utility vehicle. Maverick has 19 percent of the features in Santa Cruz
@@suavemasky 19% of the features, that is silly. The XLT version has everything I want and I personally think it looks much better. The Santa Crus screams Subie Bratt. If you like that look great. The Santa Cruz has nothing to compare with the 43 MPG hybrid option, and the turbo engine gets 2-3 MPG better as well.
Really like this but wish it came with better colors.
A little disappointing that a vehicle that costs $42,000 doesn't have comfortable seating. Could definitely be a deal killer.
Anything is better than a Ford.

Can you get this truck without a sun roof?
Yes
Fun fact - the working name for this vehicle was the THREEcson
I have $1,000 deposit on the $70,000 rivian that I won't be pulling the trigger on. Makes the Santa Cruz look inexpensive. Also the rivian is about 10 in wider which makes it a much more difficult vehicle to get around in. I might just get this one instead. My local dealer here in Colorado said he's getting nine vehicles in sometime in September and five are already reserved.
Interesting, let us know what you decide to buy after your test drive.
I like Hyundai vehicles because they got the best warranty but 4 cylinder engine pick up truck can't haul anything except sponges.
Great point
Every reviewer keeps talking about the resemblance to the Tucson. I have NO interest in the Tucson nor do I care one little bit about the "Easter Eggs! BFD to both. That said, I am planing on buying one.
lol - you will like the Santa Cruz
Looks great but doesn't look like a pickup.
True. The brands are calling them compact pickups for urban millennials. 🤷🏻♀️
....is it better?.... not without a V6.....
It's illegal in California to hang anything in the front windshield except in the left lower area. Looks like the camera is obstructing the line of sight while driving.
Sorry I couldn’t finish watching. I can’t support a video that risks the safety of others by mounting a large camera mount in your line of site
I can do 100 mph on the freeway and it will look like 65 mph with those wheels ..... sweet !
Lol
Wow, that camera mount on the windshield right in from you! I've never seen a reviewer do that. Completely unsafe; not just for you but those around you on a windy road. Even the bulk of it (suction cups) appear to be right in you line of sight.
Maverick is much bigger and better fuel efficiency and better looking.
and cheaper.
in your dreams...save up your money for a repair fund. you will need it after that short warranty expires.
Is 2” much bigger? I don’t think so. Ford hasn’t released fuel economy numbers for the non hybrid yet. But yes the base Maverick is cheaper and gets more MPG.

@@CarCoachReports Not very comfortable? I might have to rethink my interest in the Santa Cruz. How do they compare to the Maverick? 🤔
She's full of it. Seats are very good in the SC.
Take in account that she is like 5' tall, for people vertically challenged most car seats are not very comfortable 🤷♂️
As far as Maverick comparison, Santa Cruz has better seats and in general it has higher quality interior
For reference, I am 5‘8“ tall
Not only that but then say they can't compare prices because Maverick prices aren't available smh
LOL. Look at how Porsche bleeds the whole world dry with their options. America doesn’t come close.
@@mavfan1 WOW...YOU HAD TO GO TO THAT EXPENSIVE BRAND TO FIND ANOTHER COUNTRIES GOUGER.
Fugly. Looks like someone ripped the rear roof line off of small SUV and called it a truck. Maverick looks like a truck, not a wreck.
