What a helpful video! Thank you for all the great information. I am brand new at this. When I color, I get bleeding along the black line and feathering beyond it. I’m using memento black ink which is supposed to be good for alcohol markers. I’ve used Bristol smooth paper or Ninah’s 100 pound. What am I doing wrong? Thanks so much!
Happy it's helpful! That's a great question!
I'll definitely have to do a video on this and experiment, because I've hit this issue as well. Personally, when I use india ink it seems to create enough of a bleed barrier. You could also try switcing up your paper to something that is specifically designed for markers.
Anybody got any thoughts?
Me, a broke beginner artist who does way more digital art than traditional:
*this is useful information right here*
"broke" Markers and paper are a lot cheaper than a tablet and software my buddy. Well off people love to make themselves seem destitute for some reason.
@soupyschitz secondhand wacom intuos prices: hover about £10 - £30
softwares range a lot but there's lots of free software and a popular software (clip studio) i got for a one off purchase of £25 on sale and its £20 a year on another device
copic markers cost my dad £100+ when he got a set for me on my birthday some time ago. Idk how copic prices are now but there are many ways to be a cheap digital artist too, ur making this a massive non issue
I had NO IDEA about the Copic numbers. You've officially blown my mind 🤯 Thank You! Twas an awesome video, full of value (heh)
You can get some at Tuesday morning for dirt cheap and they work just as well.
I’m slowly replacing my offbrand alcohol markers with copics
Same

Yeah I just saw the price for these things I'm going for the regulars first
Soon!
This is one of the best beginners guide for copic markers I've seen. It was very easy to follow and not over explained. Thank you so much.
Oh my goodness pupper chilling in the chair in the background looks so happy, cozy and content. Doodle tutorials and happy puppers? YES.
Jen J my neighbor got a new pupper yesterday and I got to name her. Her name is Oreo. Since you like doggies I felt like sharing. Btw she tried to follow me out when so was leaving my neighbor’s apartment last night. I am doggo magnet!
I've never owned Copic Markers before, but I'm planning to get some soon! Thanks for making this video, Mary
Natsuki you should. Ohuhus are a good alternative for beginners ( you can refill them with Copic inks once you find colors that match close enough ).
Me too
Thank you for explaining the number system...I never knew what they meant!
The rainbow kitty is so flipping cute!
Love your fun energy...made the color coding and numbering of alcohol markers SO much fun!!! What a way to brighten a Sat. morning for many of your viewers. Thank you for the clear explanation, tutorial. 😁💜
I’ve got a couple of questions.
1.what paper do you use/recommend?
2.what do you do your line art with and do you let it dry and for how long?
3. When you blend do the darker colours get on the lighter markers?(like you said some people make them kiss or something and does that ever come out?)
Not sure if you still wondering or not.
But I personally like
- Bristols papers (they are thick and smooth!)
- X-Press It Blending card is another good one (not every store have them, so best bet is Amazon)
- Kent Papers (good for beginners, Daiso one is good and cheap!)
- Sketchbook papers (Personally love maruman, but there’s many other good ones too)
- Watercolour paper (not cheap and it drains your ink faster and not the best for your markers tip, but i like the finished look, as it has some texture to it too)
P.S: Always put a paper or something on the back of the page you are colouring just in case they bleed through!
2. Depends on what you use, as well as the paper. But i normally left it overnight or 30+ minutes. (Watercolour need longer time)
There’s many lineart pen like micron, copic, staedtler, etc. Do try a bunch and see which one you like! (I use copic as I feel the micron tips easily bend if you are the type to push hard on the tip, staedler is okay, but not that much variation)
3. Some darker colour like dark grey do “stain” the light (mainly pastel) colour tip if you use the light colour on top or to blend the dark colour. But no worries, just use the tip on some papers and they will be gone after a few stroke (even if the tip is still darkish)
Copic also sell replacement nibs if needed!
OH MY GOD!!!! MARY!!! FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS COPICS AND ART!!! I stand the true art queen. ❤️👏🏼

First ever artist that actually makes good tutorials! Thank god!
Thank you, this has helped decide to invest in copics a bit at a time but best to start off slowly
Why is Mary so talented AND beautiful?!?
Been watching tutorials for like an hour and this was the most helpful. Thanks!
What paper do you use? I imagine typical copy paper, for instance, would just get torn up. Was that bristol? Thanks so much!
D'OH!!! I NEVER MENTIONED PAPER!
In this video I am using a 100lb drawing paper. I also like to use Bristol board, vellum and marker paper. With marker paper there is usually more of a smooth finish to the surface and so the pigments take longer to settle. This gives you more unique blending opportunities. Marker paper also will not drink up as much of the ink so your final colors are usually more vibrant.
Alcohol markers also don't chew up the paper like water-based markers do! I've used copics (and other alcohol markers too) on copy paper with no issue. It doesn't seem to blend quite as nicely and bleeds like crazy, but you -can- do it. Just be sure to put something behind it to catch the inevitable bleeding.
On that note, I'm also pretty sure you can clean up ink on your desk and such with rubbing alcohol if it's not too rough of a surface, but that depends a lot on what you're trying to clean exactly.
I agree. I have some watercolor markers, which I love but they just eat through the paper!
Hello i would like to ask if the marker can be used at 180 gsm? I want to buy the Berkeley, can someone tell me if its okay? I'll buy it tomorrow huhu so need asap answer or tips
Oh wow
I always wondered what those codes meant, thank you for explaining! Awesome video!

Mary has such beautiful hands. I found it incredible I haven't noticed that before, it's been years I am a subscriber!
I’ve been using Copics ( and other alcohol markers ) fir a few years now and I never knew you could mix flesh tones in. The way you did with that cat. I’ve seen it done with face undertones ( a light purple grey though ) on people but never straight up blended. Mind blown!
Great intro to copic markers! I'm a newbie to these markers!! Thanks
Yay! I'm happy it's been helpful! Best of luck and joy on your creative journey

Simple guide but it helped that you talked all the way through it lol, very descriptive
Also you have a lovely house, it makes a nice background
Mary, I just wanted to say I think you're beautiful :) I love the way you present to camera and just your personality all together.
This is EXACTLY what I need in my life rn not gonna lie.
Just got the flesh tones and bold tones. Now for the 72 set A
I used to be so obsessed with these markers, I think I got like ~40 of them at home. But I started pharmacy school like 3 years ago and I haven't touched them since.
Do you have any suggestions on the type of paper to use if you don't have marker or Bristol paper? I was wondering if posterboard is okay?
Beautiful video!
May I ask the type of paper you have used to create such smooth transitions?
Thank you!
Wow, thanks for teaching me about alcohol markers Mary. Excited to get started. They are very expensive. Where do you find refill ink?
My 10 year old would really like to color in a version of your outlined animals you drew. Would you be willing to share a blank of what it looked like before adding the marker? I have some knock-off Copic markers (which I realize are not as good as the brand name), but my son is very into art and I want to support his habit as much as possible. Thought it was worth asking you about. And as mentioned below - I learned a lot from you - especially about the numbers an their meaning as well! Thank you for the informative video.
What pen or marker did you use to outline the cat like not the Copic but the black thing surrounding the cat I’m a beginner so I don’t know anything
My brain fried during the intro! Thank you for that
I live to serve
