phew, who is in for some 20 minutes marker realness 😘 in case you dont understand everything I say (due to heavy german accent for example 😆), you can turn on the subtitles. There you can also find all the copic numbers I used during the tutorial :) Let me know if you have suggestions for other topics I should cover :D
Thank you for the subtitles, since english is not my native lenguage, it helps a lot! You are the best teacher, i've have, keep being awesome! love your art!
Honestly it's easyest for me to understand your "german accent" compared to the british accent that one of my english teacher had (he had a very pronunced british accent and i understood nothing in class . In your videos i usually understand 90% that what you are saying so i think it's good )
I only have the cheapest touch markers with no brush tip so can't use most of the described techniques >< but I think I'll try the bleaching-with-blender trick, it looks cool and kinda...magical?
As a person who prefers to work and learn efficiently, this video is PERFECT. This was basically all the info that I needed about the Copics in just 1 video, without making any explanation unnecessarily long. These 20 min of video are gold.
An update from my previous comment - I actually went to the shops today and bought a pack of 500 sheets of printer paper for $4 AUD. That’s very cheap for that much paper. And when I tried it out, it worked surprisingly well. The ink didn’t bleed through the paper as much as I thought it would. Of course it does bleed a little bit since its just ordinary printer paper, but it’s still pretty easy to work with. The colours blend together so much easier. With blending card I had to work harder with the blending, with printer paper it only takes a few strokes for it to work as I want it to. Now I’ll be saving so much money!
Your medium guides are some of my favourites. They're both informative and simple and you can tell that you're well practiced in the mediums you cover. I always feel like I learned something.
It was suprising to know you used just regular copy paper! With the bleeding and thing. The only paper I found that could handle markers and never bleed was rendr, its abit up there in prices (I think $12? For their medium sized sketchbook) but I found any paper that doesn't bleed after the 20th time of going over the layers is pretty worth it.
Hydrangeyes I think it really depends on the technique that you are using. With his method you actually want the colors to bleed so he actually can use printer paper :3
I actually think he was using card stock. If you look at when he holds it up (I dunno the time stamp) it’s quite stiff. card stock still bleeds like printer paper, but won’t tear as easily. It’s also cheep. For five bucks you can get 300 sheets. Of course, I could be completely wrong. But I have used card stock with my markers and it works really well. I highly recommend it.
Well on the package it is saying that it is printer paper "perfekt für den Druck von Text und Grafik". Which means "perfect for printing text and grafics" and another big thing is that literally the Heading is saying Papier 90g and well 90g is really just a little bit thicker than cheap printer paper, [80g]. But yeah I heard that the Hammermill Cardstock should be really good. Edit: If you are talking about the paper at 6:18 then it is actually watercolor paper, cardstock is much much smoother than the paper he showed there.
I've been considering getting a set of Ciaos and decided to watch some RUclips videos to see what all the fuss was all about. Watching you do that illustration convinced me that I should get some. Thank you for the information and inspiration!
Your copic technique and end results are really breathtaking ! But If have to say that printer paper and marker paper are not the only 2 options for copic and alcohol markers works. For lots of blending and layering I suggest Bristol paper or Manga paper (like the Deleter BK). They are thicker and smoother than printer paper and because they are less porous they prevent bleeding (so wayyy less cleanup involved ). I also love to mix colored pencils with copics.
Iv been using Promarkers for about 3 years now, only recently brought my first copics but I only used them a hand full of times and I always wondered how people achieve such a smooth airbrush effect on skin, and now I know lol My drawings are full body so I can't get so much detail even if I do figure it out myself but thanks for the tips! :3 Also other alternative markers: Spectrum Noir (expensive), Chameleon (Expensive because of gradient feature, can make literally any colour combo and they blend beautifully) and Touchfive (Cheap as chips and perfectly good for beginners with at least 168 colours)
Thank you for this video, it’s so helpful! My husband surprised me with a large set of Copics and as my first copic experience I want to make sure I handle them with care
I've been using markers for a few years now and yet watching this gave me so many new ideas for what I could do with my art and how I can use them! This was very informative and inspiring and a real pleasure to watch!
Many people don’t know this, but my mom who was a fashion designer taught me how to use copic colorless blenders. Don’t use the blenders on top, instead start with it. Use it all over the area and then while it is still wet, layer the colors on top of it.
Oh man, this is so great. I tend to do the majority of my art digitally, but when I doodle in my sketchbook (for fun, practice and experimentation), markers and colored pencils are my favorites to work with. It used to be watercolors on top of outliners, but over time I kept gravitating to markers. I'm at a point where I'm considering investing into alcohol markers, or if I find out that water based ones can make nice gentle shading effects too, I'll get all the ZIGs ever xD (I love those). But, just, wow. I never realized how smoooth and beautiful marker art can look like! This is so great, I'm so excited!!!
This guy is just amazing. This purplish hue he uses in the hair and face is something I wouldn’t have thought of doing myself but I love the effect of it. I also really like the colors of the eyes! Note that the white part of the eyes is not white!
Thank you for teaching about blender! I drew a lot of time with markers and month ago got copics for my birthday, now i'll try to include these tips and improve, thank you!^^
Cooler Guide! :)
Thank you so much! This was a long awaited video, but it was totally worth it! I especially love how you really slow down and take it step-by-step, even including the marker numbers. You don't have to worry about your accent! I think you communicate beautiful! Thanks for all your hard work!
Fantastic tutorial. I learned so many ways to use the colorless blender because of you!! And I'm with you - I'm not a huge fan of the hard nibs myself. I've been slowly transitioning to Copics!
I also preferred the sketch\drawing paper rather than special paper for markers. But more I like to use kraft or tan toned paper for drawing with markers and pencils. It gives good effects.
That’s interesting you leave the spaces blank with the white bits (like towered the edge of the face and down the neck). Because I use a lot of colors, and blending, the colors would bleed too much so I just take a white liner (like white comic ink pot) with the itty bitty brush and highlight in the end.
YOU ARE SO AWESOME!! I watched the whole video and it’s like woah even tho i just have like 11 markers and can’t blend like this but i love this and I’m gonna try and use every single tip when I buy more shades! ^_^
I just got 22 tombow ABT markers and I’m in love!!! I never liked the chisel tips on copic markers so the tombow was a great alternate! The tombow has a wonderful flexible brush tip, and a awesome fine nip for bullet journaling, outlining, and such! Plus they’re only 3.29!
Basically I’m broke but using copic sketch grays plus skin tones with colored pencils can work pretty dang good at least in my experiences so far. Also of note though I’m creating on tan paper so that might have something to do with it.
Wirklich informatives und anschauliches Video ^^! Ich finde es unfassbar toll von dir, dass Du Dir die Mühe machst in den Videos auf Englisch zu sprechen, damit es mehr Leute verstehen können =).
Thank you for this informative video! Regarding inks, I've found that fountain pen inks, which are water based, deal with alcohol markers pretty well. Acrylics and other inks that contain different solvents or additives don't work so well. I've tried with some colored inks like herbin and diamine and they do fine as well
Great tutorial, I know this was 6 years ago but still wanted to comment on the Copic airbrush system since I am a 3D Print model painter/artist, honestly, you will get just about the same results with just using the acrylic paints on an airbrush, You don't necessarily need to buy a mini compressor, many airbrushes already come with handy chargeable air compressors that you can attach to the airbrush and is way cheaper than buying a whole compressor, especially if you are a beginner, hope it helps someone.
I don't know why I'm crying (in my heart)watching this video. This video has very good information and very nice illustration. I didn't know how to use markers, but I want to learn.
I just ordered some copics today and while I knew most of this stuff, some of it was really useful. I especially liked the way you colored the hair. I'm definitely trying that next time.
If you would have told me before today that printer paper makes good marker paper... I guess I have to give it a shot 😨 thank you for this extensive video, I've been really wondering how to really get tight blending in with these markers. My mind is blown!!!
Wow, you're legitimately one of the first other guys i've seen have this art style, i see it mostly other with my female peers and friends, and random people on the internet. I like you, art is nice, nice accent, imma subscribe.
Great! I use a different brand of markers but I learned quite a few things here. Again! Qua paper: at the moment I deliberately choose paper that bleeds a lot. But that's really a choice that I make now for my art needs this. It's so nice to do all kinds of experiments with all the materials we have on hand. Thanks for this outstanding tutorial!
Your video has given me more practical and useful advice than all the other copic videos I've watched, I'm simply amazed ❤ especially the lineart, I've been having that issue whenever I used my copic markers. Would love to see more tips and tricks!
Thank you so much for this lesson! I started using copic markers a couple of years back, and they've been my favourite medium since. This was very helpful, and definitely had some new techniques I'll be looking forward to trying out!
WHERE WAS THIS WHEN I NEEDED IT A WEEK AGO???????? In all seriousness, thank you for making this video. It’s really easy to follow and covers the basics well
Copic makes wonderful non coated marker paper that is smooth but not reflective. I've got two sketchbooks with it! It doesn't bleed through to the next sheet of paper, too!
Thank you ! It's a good video For the alcohol marker cheaper than copics, I tested touch marker and graph'it marker. I like the graph'it but they are 2 sort, one with a nip like promarker (I don't like it, i prefer the copic's brush nip) and one with a brush nip like copics ! But In my experience, the nip is fragil but they are replacement nip for sale. When you want to test alcohol marker, I advise to test with graph'it (or other "cheap" marker) before copics, because if finally you don't like this technique you have lost a lot of money :( And the marker all use alcohol so you can use graph'it and copic in the same drawing, so if you like this technique, your first "cheap" marker aren't lost ! (I hope my english isn't so bad, I'm french)
I've always loved the look of going from dark to light with alcohol based markers. I've found that it always stains the tips of the lighter marker though. I kind of bleed the lighter marker right after to minimize the affect of the stain, but it still leaves a bit of a discoloration when I use it next. I won't stop trying to find a solution that isn't buying new markers even though I. know it's inevitable given the way physical mediums work.
all my alcohol-based markers are secondhand from Value Village and my lineart pens are black gel pens from the dollar store, and I've never had the smudging issue, which wow makes me feel pretty lucky. I haven't used the markers over pencil before (I like to sketch with pen) so thank you for the blender-dabbing tip in case I do! that's so smart. all the tips are great and useful but my other fave is about the marker paper, seeing as I just use an old sketchbook I bought in high school. not a fan of how the marker paper looks so now I can save $$$ not buying it to test out, keep living my best thrift life
I personally like to use cardstock for blending! I can get a pack of 30 sheets for £1 and it can really hold its ink. The only downside really is trying to control the bleeding since it does get a little out of hand sometimes.
I use the winsor and Newton brush markers and the odd copic ciao for unavailable colours like skin tones and browns ect (the odd one being because they are more expensive )but I find they preform quite similarly and I feel like I have More control with the winsor and Newton ones although that’s probably because I’m used to them 😅 Also thanks for the tip with the hair it looks so cool and I’m definitely gonna have to try it out
Unglaublich interessantes und detailliertes Video ♥ Vielen Dank für den hervorragenden Einblick. Ich freue mich schon, wenn meine Copics endlich ankommen :D
Your voice is nice, would be great for a chill podcast kind of thing. I like how you're not super loud and overexcited like a lot of RUclipsrs. Keep up the good work, friend! :)
A trick you can do if you want to color heavy sketches that will smudge or if the line-work is done in colored pencils, is to use the markers on the backside of the paper using a light-table of some sort. Use non-marker paper or do the line art on the coated side. This will deplete ink really fast though.
Love the tips! I speak German too but not too well just what I can remember from when I was little I grew up in Schweinfurt. I have people at the travel center I work at asking me where I am from all the time. Most common is Cincinnati but they do have a big Oktoberfest there. Mines a odd mix of German British and the lack of accent from Indiana. Currently I have gotten into markers I run out of skin tone fast though.
Laovaan, this is easily the best marker tutorial I have ever seen, and I have seen quite a few. I would consider myself somewhat experienced with markers, but I still learned a great deal from this guide. I was very surprised to find out you get those great blends on non-coated paper. I have always used marker paper or at least very smooth paper, apparently that was a bit of a mistake. In fact I was just looking into coating watercolour paper with clear gesso to give it a barrier. I still wonder how that will turn out, but it looks like I may be better off without the gesso after all. I have also thought about getting that airbrush a few times, but decided against it as I have a normal airbrush and the inks can be used with that too, albeit less easily. But looking at your work, your regular blending is so close to the gradients of the airbrush, I think I would usually just prefer to do without airbrushing altogether. Wonderful tutorial, many thanks!
i love it. so many new things i learnt from this vid! i really love copic. hopefully one day i can use both copic and watercolour (copic is expensive. cannot afford colouring large area with it)
When it comes to the accuracy of colours, I suggest you draw a line on paper then tape a small part to the end of your pen, so you don't have to keep testing it out.
phew, who is in for some 20 minutes marker realness 😘
in case you dont understand everything I say (due to heavy german accent for example 😆), you can turn on the subtitles. There you can also find all the copic numbers I used during the tutorial :)
Let me know if you have suggestions for other topics I should cover :D
I have been in 1hour and 37 min of copic videos v:
You should do a tutorial or a video of tips for realistic watercolor paintings. :3
Thank you for the subtitles, since english is not my native lenguage, it helps a lot! You are the best teacher, i've have, keep being awesome! love your art!
Laovaan thank you so much for this lengthy guide!! ❤️
Honestly it's easyest for me to understand your "german accent" compared to the british accent that one of my english teacher had (he had a very pronunced british accent and i understood nothing in class . In your videos i usually understand 90% that what you are saying so i think it's good )
"Looks almost like a pokeball" best definition to draw pupils
I can't unsee it now
"I caught you at first sight" could be something a Pokémon lover would say to the other Pokémon lover they have a crush on
Personal opinion, but I think colouration is definetely your biggest 'forte', as it were 👏😁
Danke dir 😊🙏
Laovaan
😲
Woah you know german words
*really surprise
Aber Marcel, warum schreibst du denn in Englisch ?
Yukiji Nakamura laovaan ist deutsch
Ich schreib auch üblicherweise englisch, einfach weil das hier so standardsprache ist :D
Every single one of your medium classes is so gold and thorough and teaches me so much. Thanks so much!
Idk why I'm watching this - i don't even have markers
Sky Mikko lol me. same
I only have the cheapest touch markers with no brush tip so can't use most of the described techniques >< but I think I'll try the bleaching-with-blender trick, it looks cool and kinda...magical?
Me too dude XD
Sameeee
Lol me too....
As a person who prefers to work and learn efficiently, this video is PERFECT.
This was basically all the info that I needed about the Copics in just 1 video, without making any explanation unnecessarily long. These 20 min of video are gold.
The airbrush is a really cool way to "color" backgrounds and fill in large spaces.
6:38 uses the whole goddamn role xD
Stan B-Project I thought it was a sponge BAHHAHA💀💀💀
The alcohol marker video I've been searching for!!!
An update from my previous comment - I actually went to the shops today and bought a pack of 500 sheets of printer paper for $4 AUD. That’s very cheap for that much paper.
Aaaaand here go my "i-cant-draw-god-why-he-is-so-awesome" depression again.
oof i feel ya
You CAN draw. just keep going and don't give up. Also, there's no such thing as an ugly or crappy drawing.
@@winterr2916 lol what are you, an art therapist?
Don't give up!
Tajee I know how it feels
My 2 favorite things in one Chanel.

[Runo] ooooohhhhh Xd I see now~
I actually think he was using card stock. If you look at when he holds it up (I dunno the time stamp) it’s quite stiff. card stock still bleeds like printer paper, but won’t tear as easily. I really like the idea of adding orange and blue to give the hair a rainbow-like look! Never thought of that before!
I’m getting into copics and alcohol markers and this video is one of the best and most informative video!!
GRAPHMASTER sind echt gut. Das verblenden von zwei sehr unterschiedlichen Farben gelingt sehr soft.

i have been scouring the web for copic related tutorials lately and i have to say this is one of if not the best.

just absolutely breath-taking

Thanks you! I am just a baby beginner with markers and you are an inspiration!!
Thank you Laovaan! I've been struggling to blend colours with my markers and now I know why.
I recently got a copic set as a gift and this video REALLY helped me out! Thanks so much as usual
Wirklich informatives und anschauliches Video ^^! Ich finde es unfassbar toll von dir, dass Du Dir die Mühe machst in den Videos auf Englisch zu sprechen, damit es mehr Leute verstehen können =).
Excellent. I’ve used watercolor paper with copics, I think it works well. I’ll try the office paper!
i really loved the explanation, nice guiding, voice and talent. thanks for the video!
That hair trick was amazing
This video helped me out of a lot back in the day. Now I sent this to a relative that wants to use markers as well
Thank you for this informative video!

Very thorough video, very clear and excellent description of the techniques you’re using. Kudos!

Dude very professional video. Very descriptive, easy to understand, and enjoyable!
Your video has given me more practical and useful advice than all the other copic videos I've watched, I'm simply amazed ❤ especially the lineart, I've been having that issue whenever I used my copic markers. Would love to see more tips and tricks!
I just got copics for Christmas and I want to preserve them. You were a great help.
I feel so inadequate looking at your insanely Beautiful colouring and line art . I wish I was at your level
Thank you so much for this lesson! I started using copic markers a couple of years back, and they've been my favourite medium since. This was very helpful, and definitely had some new techniques I'll be looking forward to trying out!

I kind of bleed the lighter marker right after to minimize the affect of the stain, but it still leaves a bit of a discoloration when I use it next. I won't stop trying to find a solution that isn't buying new markers even though I. know it's inevitable given the way physical mediums work.
you can use children's blow markers to get the similar effect!! it's cheap and it's great for experimenting if you're a beginner)!
Just gotta say, I love your accent my dude
I CANT YOUR ACCENT IS ADORABLE
all my alcohol-based markers are secondhand from Value Village and my lineart pens are black gel pens from the dollar store, and I've never had the smudging issue, which wow makes me feel pretty lucky. I haven't used the markers over pencil before (I like to sketch with pen) so thank you for the blender-dabbing tip in case I do! that's so smart. all the tips are great and useful but my other fave is about the marker paper, seeing as I just use an old sketchbook I bought in high school. not a fan of how the marker paper looks so now I can save $$$ not buying it to test out, keep living my best thrift life
Dank deinem Video kann ich endlich richtig kolorieren. Bis jetzt das beste Video was ich zum Kolorieren gesehen habe👍
I literally can't get over how cute your avatar is omg
I personally like to use cardstock for blending! I can get a pack of 30 sheets for £1 and it can really hold its ink. The only downside really is trying to control the bleeding since it does get a little out of hand sometimes.
I use the winsor and Newton brush markers and the odd copic ciao for unavailable colours like skin tones and browns ect (the odd one being because they are more expensive )but I find they preform quite similarly and I feel like I have More control with the winsor and Newton ones although that’s probably because I’m used to them 😅
Also thanks for the tip with the hair it looks so cool and I’m definitely gonna have to try it out
Thanks so much! I always love how organized these videos are! :)
So helpful! I'll be watching this again in the future as my skills expand. Thank you!
Buying a preowned copic lot with these skintone colors! Cant wait to learn to shade like this
that was the most beautiful drawing I have ever seen
I love the look and feel the airbrush tool gives :O. Thank you for this video. I am a beginner user of copic markers so this was awesome lesson.
Why don't you give classes on skillshare? :D that'll be awesome!! ♥
We'd be satisfied with you uploading a video of you just talking about random stuff and doing nothing else since your voice is sooooo soothing!
凄い上手!!😳✨神絵師ですねっ!あなたの絵に惚れました!Berrygood!🙌💕💕
You have a good collection of markers
i love it. so many new things i learnt from this vid! i really love copic. hopefully one day i can use both copic and watercolour (copic is expensive. cannot afford colouring large area with it)
You’re so inspiring! Thank you for drawing the way you do
When it comes to the accuracy of colours, I suggest you draw a line on paper then tape a small part to the end of your pen, so you don't have to keep testing it out.
