I'm pretty new to all things art related... just took up watercolor 18 months ago. Slowly but surely, I'm adding other media. This has been an excellent video...never noticed what kind of markers I've been buying and using! You are an excellent teacher... and such a talent! Thank you 😊 from a California Gramma ❤️
Thanks so much, Ann! I appreciate all your kind words ~ it really means a lot! 🥰 I'm so happy to hear that this video has been useful to you! It's great that you're exploring art and trying out different media. Enjoy!! 😃🎨
Welcome to the world of art. What was it like when you realized you could so artists projects? How long have you been practicing? I'm just curious. I have been drawing and coloring since I was a toddler. I started with color pencils and crayons and didn't get access to paint till middle school art class, well other than finger painting in Kindergarten. I may not be new but there's always new media and new techniques to learn. 🤗❤️👍🏽💯
I personally prefer waterbased markers (ZIG brushmarker), each color is a large variety of that hue dependent on the amount of water dilution you add with a waterbrush. In my experience waterbased markers last longer a piece even when each marker stands for about 5 shades of alcohol markers, you are only diluting the available color. It makes it easy to oversee all markers in one go and takes in much less space. I use 2 types of paper: Strathmore Bristol Smooth (300 gsm) and Canson Montval watercolor paper ( 2 types 200 gsm + 300 gsm) no warping problems with 300 gsm.
This had all the main questions I had covered in place and thank you so much for the specific brand reviews too! The explanations were so easy to follow along with too
I like drawing with my nieces. I give them the Crayola while I use the sharpies. 😎 I never really thought of upgrading to the next level. Interesting video, thank you!
Hi. I have really been enoying watching your videos. I found them because I searched about Posca markers. Do you ever paint with acrylics? If you do, I would love to see a vid on that subject like techniques and such. Thanks for sharing your insights and your vids are so nice and colourful! :) -Sarah
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, Sarah! 💖 I've been painting with acrylics for over 20 years, and recently I started thinking about doing some acrylic painting videos, so your comment came at just the right time! 😊 It's great to hear that you would be interested! 🎨
I wanted to have a 101 class about alcohol markers vs water based one. I learned all info I need for my first purchase in 20 minutes. Great, simple and content-focus video. Amazing job, thanks !
Thank you for a great video! I just wish it was longer, I am a bit hungry for knowledge, you might say. 😊 I will be buying copic markers and their paper, to start my own marker-journey. Thank you again!
Glad my video was helpful to you! 💖 I have an Alcohol Markers playlist on my channel, if you want more tips and time-lapses for using alcohol markers: ruclips.net/p/PLZXVzBg3N_uytIU1WgxuZhaigSFrl724W Have fun on your alcohol marker journey!! 😃🎨🌟
Great video! Thanks for the very helpful info. I am narrowing down a couple purchases right now on Amazon thanks to this very informative video. I also added a couple of your coloring books to my Art Supplies wish list and saved your web site as well as following you across your socials.
I’m taking art classes and joined the art club. I’m pretty new to art and I just need some nice cheap stuff to start learning. The few art classes I’ve had have been very fun and this was extremely useful, thanks 🎉
You are amazing, Thaneeya! 😍 I want to create a mandala bookmark as a gift to a friend, and I decided to make it with markers. I have done some art work before but never with markers. Your video (and now videos, because I will keep watching them for tips) it is incredible and so, so helpful! Thank you so much! Sending you lots of love and smiles ☺💘
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment! 🥰 I'm so happy that my video was helpful to you. Your mandala bookmark idea sounds like a lovely gift for your friend! Happy Art-Making!! 😃🎨
Thanks for the help :) I had some alcohol markers, but didn't like them quite. Wanted to try some other alcohol markers, but didn't know which ones. Now I know way more about alcohol markers, pluss what to buy. Wants to try either copics or ohohu. Thanks again for the help:)
Hi Thaneeya! Excellent introductory video. I've been using markers for a while, so I'm familiar with the information here. This is a great video for anyone new to art markers; well done. Thanks too for the links to the different markers. :)
Thank you so much for your positive feedback! It means a lot. 🥰 I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video even though you're already familiar with markers! 😃
Ive been using kingart pro twin tip watercolor markers. They have a brush tip on one side and a bullet tip on the other. Basically a cheap version of tombow. My only complaint is they dont blend as well as tombow markers do.
Thank you, this was very helpful! I use water based markers as I mostly use them for adult colouring books (most of which are double sided). I'd like to start making my own art but I never know what to draw and it always turns out worse than I expect. I think I like the idea of making my own art more than actually doing it. I'd love to try alcohol markers but it's hard to find single-sided colouring books with good quality paper and I don't want to waste my money if I won't use them much (like I have with other art supplies)
Glad my video was helpful to you! 💖 If you have a printer, then you can choose the type of paper that you print onto. Card stock is a fairly cheap option that can handle alcohol markers well. I've also used alcohol markers in my own coloring books (which are single-sided), but I always remove the page from the book first (so the ink won't bleed onto the page underneath). I'm also careful not to flood the paper with too much ink, or the colors will feather out too much. If you can find a cheap set of alcohol markers, they might be worth a try! 😊🎨
My age 71yr old I just started yesterday on my first coloring book I'm just useing my grandsons markers I got from tesco just been looking for a hobby because I have stopped going to the gym I also have sharpies but haven't tried them yet the tesco markers are better for coloring biggest area I'm still in the trial and error area just now before I think about getting better markers but to be honest I'm not much good no matter what markers I use
Congrats on starting your first coloring book! 🎨 It's great that you're trying new things and I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it! 😃 I enjoy using Sharpies, they're definitely worth a try! 😊
I like to color mandalas coloring books. I use gel pens to color it or coloring pencils lately in stopped coloring. I found this video searching for markers for my mom and end up watching for me 😂 not I want to color in markers and watch your whole video 😂 I usually never watch all the videos 😂. I like your video and info!! THANK YOU
Thank you for this informative video. My niece is in her teens and loves drawing and colouring. She definitely wants to continue her passion for art so I had gotten her a colouring book she can use these types of markers to expand her skills. I am considering either alcohol or water-based markers but unsure of what would be best for her to begin using and grow from there. Any recommendations?
Glad to hear my video was helpful to you! 😃 I'd suggest asking your niece was types of markers she'd prefer. If she has favorite artists she follows on social media, she might want to use the same markers that they do. In general, alcohol markers are very popular these days, so set of inexpensive alcohol markers is probably a safe bet! 🌟
Hello! I haven't done that myself so I can't speak from experience... I don't know if the Copic nibs would fit into Ohuhu markers, because different brands often have different dimensions. Ohuhu makes their own replacement brush nibs now so you could try those (I don't know if they offer replacement fine nibs yet). Good luck with it! 😊
I know some level of this info but I'm not very experienced with markers. Growing up, I didn't like how paper would shred or bleeds would tear the paper. I learned about different paper pounds on accident when a teacher that noticed I loved to draw and paint bought me a mixed media paper sketchbook as I graduated high school. In school art classes in there was always none bleed through acrylic or pastels or juat pencil art, so we used thin white paper on a roll. When I started watching anime, specifically Hayao Miyazaki's Totoro as a preteen and others as I grew into the fascination of scene and character making skills, I was inspired to work on my illustration skills for books and story making. I aim to get more skills practice to help my art look less 2D with different media than graphite. I did lot of pencil and charcoal art because it seemed to be more of a challenge for artist to make it look realistic without color. I found your channel on a website when I looked up Copic and the differences in the ones I plannned to buy on Amazon. Thanks for your hard work 🤗❤️👍🏽💯
Thanks for your comment! 😃 I'm glad my info about markers has been useful to you as you research the different options. I've been so inspired by Miyazaki's work as well. Wishing you all the best on your creative journey!! 🎨🌟
Thank you for this! A lot of good information. I never thought of blending water based markers with a wet brush (as long as the paper is meant for wet media). Have you used Spectrum Noir markers? That is the brand I'm currently using. SO glad you have a YT channel now 😃🥳🎉
So glad this video was helpful to you, Diane! Thank you for letting me know! 😊 If you have water-based markers, you should definitely try using a wet brush with them, because the effects can be quite beautiful. 😍 I did have a few Spectrum Noir Tri-Blend markers a few years ago, but haven't tried their other kinds of markers. They do seem like a good brand! I liked the Tri-Blends but they were kind of chunky for my small fingers, so I didn't use them much. 🤣 I tend to prefer the oval-shaped barrels because they're more comfortable for me. Thank you so much for your comment! 💖

One factor to keep in mind is that the more colors you have, the more smooth blends you can make. So it's better to get a bigger set if you can afford it, although starting with 48 or 60 colors can still give you a good sense of what it's like to use the markers. Then later you can buy more colors if you really like using them. Hope this helps! 😃

What about watercolour markers?
Hi there! Watercolor markers are water-based 😊
Aren’t acrylic markers better?
Acrylic markers are waterbased markers with acrylic ink or paint providing the colour rather than dye.
To me bleed thru is the worst thing, maybe I just need to invest in some better paper
Ohuhu makes a bleedproof marker paper that you could try. There's also Crescent Rendr paper, but it has a slight bluish/grayish tone that mutes the marker colors a little. I've been pretty happy with the Ohuhu Bleedproof marker paper overall! 😃
