Such an interesting question: does it matter or not to you if your marker art fades over time? That would depend…. My marker art is typically intended for stage/costume design sketches which, aren’t necessarily needed after the production is completely built. However, productions that become part of a repertoire will require future rebuilds either in part or whole. To ensure the original sketches remain useful for this, one must include additional color references that support the integrity of the pallet. Textile swatches tend are typically protected from the light, but they can get separated from the sketch over the long term, therefore labeling the artwork with Pantone reference numbers is a good idea.

what did u do that they fadded so much, I use to own bunch of W&N markers in 2017 and painted wth them but they didn't fade at all

I can smell the video because I'm actually coloring with my own crayons this morning.

When I want to layer different Crayola Crayons to get shadows, I let my first section of color rest for a little while, and color each section and let those sections rest too.

Ahah! So there are pigment markers, that's what I wasn't sure about. I usually use copics for linework or under painting back when I used brush pens, although I prefer Kuratake brush pens myself. My pigment medium of choice is either soft pastel or charcoal.

Oil painters , acrylic artists and watercolor artists have to be careful about what pigments they use because there are certain pigments that will also fade. We call those pigments fugitive pigments.

can we talk about the environmental footprint of these too? there's a lot of cheap brands now that don't offer refills and is sold in groups of 60+ colours which might not all be used up. the low price is tempting for beginners as they're STILL wayyy cheaper than 12 copics. but the amount of plastic generated and wasted, for something that won't even last breaks my heart

That's why I've switched over from alcohol markers to watercolor and gouache. (Note on gouache: for lightfastness you want *artist* gouache, since some *designer* gouache--like alcohol markers--were initially meant for reproducible illustrations rather than originally displayed art, and so didnt prioritize lightfastness)

Drawing circles isn't easy 😅 for me

My take is that it almost sounds like alcohol markers were created for the digital age. If you want to preserve the original color, it's almost like you should make sure to scan the art and have original copies somewhere. I'd keep the original art with the date on it to show that I am the original artist of the art. Stealing and AI is just so problematic these days. The longer the fade, the more you can prove your ownership.
