    Early in the morning on November 21, 2011, two hot shot intermodal trains 20Q and 24K both race eastbound from Harrisburg, PA to Morrisville, PA making one heck of a heart racing sight. Both trains are about 1.5 miles in length, and basically start and end at the same time! Also note the defect detectors in the beginning of the video: tracks one and two announce simultaneously!
    I woke up that morning, and just happen to decide to take a look at ATCS and noticed 2 trains lined east on opposite tracks all the way from Millards (MP 93.5) to Wyomissing Jct. (MP 61), with no opposing westbound traffic anywhere in sight. The leading train, 20Q (with NS 9878 and NS 9022), on track one, ended up being told to wait for 24K to go first at Wyomissing Jct., evidently, 24K is higher priority, and when the 24K crew heard dispatcher telling 20Q that he would stop, they said, "We just like looking at your engines." For those of you who don't know, Wyomissing Jct. is where the Harrisburg Line either enters Reading (which is not possible for 90% of trains because of height restrictions) or temporarily diverges into a single connecting track which leads to the wye at Dunkle where one track heads northeast toward the Reading Line to Allentown and New York City and the other heads southeast to rejoin the Harrisburg Line to Philadelphia. Therefore, one train has to hold a Wyomissing Jct. for the other to pass through the wye before continuing. In this case, both trains were headed to Morrisville Yard, boy, they sure had their hands full!

      I think that the Dispatcher or someone would have a say and who would stop. Also whoever is responsible for safe operations will be looking very carefully at any time speed recordings. That's IMHO.

      The Fate of Slate Had a situation where I was leaving second on a all stop local, a buddy had the express train that skipped half the stops I had to make. He got into San Jose from San Francisco before me, I fact passed me going north at Santa Clara, I still had to stop in San Nose, discharge passengers, change ends and do air test. The dispatcher, a friend said he was running me up the #2, Grandpa, my buddy was on the #1 as there was no other southbound traffic that evening. My buddy had a good 10 minutes on me, but I caught up with, and passed him waving as I went by. When I got into SF, I secured my train, changed ends and we were walking to our cars from the depot when Grandpa comes around the final curve into SF, I grabbed the conductors radio and asked him “what took you so long”, lol.
      To this day, it’s been 15yrs, that story still gets told. So we sorta joke about who’s the faster engineer, I don’t run trains anymore, but the stories live on.
      I was on a light power move, we were running side by side with a UP local, recall my conductor handing the UP engineer a bag of donuts we bought earlier up the line when we stopped for donuts.

      They race for pink slips. How do I know? My dad and I were railfanning at Fostoria about 20 years ago and over the scanner we heard one engineer ask the other if they wanted to race for pink slips. They were both stopped waiting for a CSX train to clear the diamond, so they had started from a dead stop.

    That’s really good dispatching here. I’m guessing the dispatcher knew both trains were about the same lengths and decided to run them side-by-side so it would minimize delays for the westbounds.

    • @DivergantStories
      @DivergantStories Год назад +2

      Bro needs millions in raises for this lol

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 11 месяцев назад

      Huh? If you want to run trains both eastbound and westbound, you minimize delay by using one track for eastbound and one for westbound. Running two eastbounds in parallel blocks both lines and means you can't run any westbound trains at all. Running two eastbounds one behind the other blocks only one line and allows as many westbound trains as you want to run on the other line.

    • @MatthewSmith-cv7op
      @MatthewSmith-cv7op 11 месяцев назад

      But what if there are no westbounds nearby? Silly to hold one eastbound and wait and clear.

    • @MegaBrokenstar
      @MegaBrokenstar 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@beeble2003you’re assuming this track is doubled along its whole length, and it probably isn’t. Most likely these tracks either merge or fork a few miles down the line. Not too many mainlines are multi-track along the full length these days. Running these trains side-by-side and then either single-file or separating them along different lines allows this section to become clear at roughly the same time the first of these two trains clears it, reducing some other train’s wait.

    • @beeble2003
      @beeble2003 11 месяцев назад

      @@MegaBrokenstar Good point, but I don't think that works, either. Suppose that trains are running at V miles per hour, and have to be kept D miles apart when they're on the same track.
      Suppose the trains are on the same track. After the first train exits the double track, we have to wait for the second train to cover D miles plus its own length before the double track is clear. The train is traveling at V mph throughout that time.
      Now, suppose the trains are running parallel. At the end of the double track, one of them has to stop. It then has to wait for the moving train to travel D miles to establish the safety gap before it can even start. Then, the waiting train begins to accelerate from a standstill. In contrast, if it had been running behind the first train, it would have been travelling at full speed from that point. So parallel running takes longer to clear the double track than running one behind the other.

    • @OliversElevators
      @OliversElevators 4 года назад +2

      Sean Riley the defect detectors can be heard at the start of the video over the radio saying “Norfolk Southern milepost 79.9...” and then announcing the track number and if the train has any defects. A defect detector checks the train for any defects or problems as it goes past it and reports them over the railway’s radio. You can hear it say “no defects”, although the second one is harder to hear over the extremely loud horns. They don’t have anything to do with the train horns, they just check the train for defects and reports any problems it finds.

    And almost exactly the same in length and duration as far as the amount of cars!
    Only thing that would have made it slightly the little bit better was if both of the engines were exactly side by side almost as if they were drag racing!
    But as both of them ended, it looked like they were both side by side at the end so I guess one end of the spectrum versus the other 😊😊
    Most likely a once in a lifetime experience! Glad you were there and thank you for sharing :-)

    1- The outside train passed first, if the one on the inside was first then the other one would be invisible.
    2- Their pace was relatively high, a rare sight for freight trains.
    3- They ended at the same time!

      At first the second train appeared to be going a bit faster as they came around the corner. It's possible the engineer in both trains adjusted the speeds of their engines to match each other. Very cool either way.

    Nice catch! Norfolk Southern getting it done. I see them often at the Intermodal yard in Wylie Tx. I always look over at their side track that parallels Hwy 78 to see what kind of motive power they have waiting. Usually NS Dash 9's and some KCS southern belles. Not sure which ones though as they're partially obscured behind trees a few acres away. :(
