- NS train H74, a local running on Norfolk Southern's "Portland Secondary" line was on its way to Portland Pennsylvania when, while passing through Bangor PA, a semi pulls into the right of way and gets struck on its passenger side front end. The train was traveling at track speed, (30 mph) and the engineer engaged the E-Brake moments before the collision. Although it was carrying 67 loaded cars, it came to a quick stop due to the steep track gradient they were traveling up through the town. Nobody was injured, and no fuels/chemicals were leaked during the crash. After the train was inspected and continued on, Fast Lane wreckers were called in to tow away the battered Peterbilt and the loaded wood mulch trailer.

YESS!! pisses me off when they do that every time. Kudos to the canera man for keeping it up
Yes, you have one job to do... get that footage!
I think we can all agree: that train has bloody amazing brakes.
The ability of a train to stop depends on the type of braking used, and its speed and mass. Heavy trains take longer to stop. They can be heavy because they're longer or because they're full of cargo or both.
There was a guy that committed suicide on the tracks where I work. The train stopped as quickly if not faster than this one. It took them 3 hours to investigate the accident. CSX railroad police came out and had the engineer test the horns, lights and bell even though they knew it was a suicide. It was terrible, the guy was crossing the tracks with a friend when the train was coming. At the last second he suddenly turned around and ran onto the tracks and was struck.
*mojorisen74* See 10:15.
also take into contrast if carmen replaced brake shoes (they could be fresh) and looks like there is some newer cars there too.
Train brakes are very effective. A mile long train booking 65mph will take a nearly mile to stop in full emergency, the whole train length. A car travelling on a highway at the same speed could take 12-15 times the length of the car itself. Which has the best braking ability?
As a truck driver in training... **NOTE TO SELF** never challenge RR crossing...
DUELLY NOTED!!
I would NEVER challenge a crossing anyway... one time. Driving my car, approaching a crossing, lights and gate were dead on my approach doing road speed. I was about 10 or so feet from it, about the distance I would be if a light turned yellow and I would continue going, I was approaching the crossing and the lights began to activate, so I stepped on gas and notice the locomotive about 50 ft from passing with head lights flashing. Another car went through at the same time separate lane as I. After passing watching my mirrors, I was about a quarter mile past the RR crossing when train passed. That was the closest I ever came to challenging a RR crossing gate actively moving, and I was too close to try safely stopping, that I was better to proceed anyway.
Only other instance, driving a Motorcoach bus in previous job, came to complete stop at RR crossing as legally required, doing a RR stop and Look (CDL mandates for bus drivers), about 20 feet down tracks, a train not moving, one headlight solid none blinking, gate nor crossing lights inactive, when I stopped. I waited 10 seconds unsure what to do, could tell it wasn't moving yet (must been parked in an industrial space), so i proceeded through crossing, still no change in lights after i crossed. Got about half mile up. Came to stop at red light stoplight, and I seen in mirrors the crossing guard and lights were active, but I got a green light and proceeded to drive, never saw the train cross.
All that to explain... if your in a car and you happen to approach a RR crossing when it fleshly becomes active, you have maybe at most 15 seconds before train actually crosses. If your in a car which can take off quickly, you MIGHT be ok challenging that timing, I HIGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT DO SO!! I know learning to drive trucks, it takes about 15 seconds or more from a stopped position to pull out in cross traffic and speed up to road speed, as were taught to look for 15 second gaps in traffic in order to pull out. If your a truck driver approaching and stopping at RR tracks actively stopping traffic, even if you do not see the train yet, YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME TO take off and clear the tracks once they are active...
That driver clearly made a mistake!!
Compared to the semi tractor, freight locomotives are impressively massive. Doesn’t even budge. No joke. Thanks for posting. Great catch
No shit. 10.5 tons vs 216 tons. Remember, the loco needs all that weight to keep its wheels from slipping while the engines put down the forces into the rails needed to pull miles-long trains.
If only there was a device with bells, whistles and lights yelling that a train is coming. 🤔

In the years when I was in law enforcement, I always, always, was told by driver of the vehicle hit, the crossing signals were not operating when the accident occurred. One fool even told me the train crew came to the crossing and turned the signals on! Of course, I always charged the person who was hit by the train. The best one was right after a hurricane, one of the inspectors for an electric company was hit on the tracks at an unguarded crossing. He said the train was not blowing its whistle. Another inspector arrived to say he had been talking to the other inspector, heard a train horn, then the connection was lost.

1:21 that’s actually a pretty nice painting of Timmy turner
Honestly, I hate graffiti on basically anything else than the free spray-walls in my country, but if they would spray paint something like that on something, at least it would be more fun than some kind of tag that only the graffiti-world gets... (or just spray painting a cuss word on a carriage).
Iris I agree I hate it on train cars especially
@@green_bay_cheesehead1248 Some vandals spray painted the side of a whole 4 carriages counting passenger train in silver when it was stationed at a station waiting for service the next day (having all trains divert back to a depot is not something viable on the crowded rail network of The Netherlands).
They only painted one side, the other was still left in the normal colors, but it was absolutely ridiculous.
1:21 that's the sound he makes when taking a dump.
Did you ever film H26 on its way from Lancaster to Coatesville?
Great location! And timing! Congrats!
wow that truck looked almost new........ what a shame
Fuck him. He's an idiot!
Brand new Pete.
*was brand new :)
What do you mean "almost new"?
Eh just throw a new hood steering bar and a new axel it will be new again
Really surprised at how quickly the train stopped, coal trains in my neck of the woods would take a solid mile to get stopped because of the weight.
Per the description, it seems that it managed to slow down much faster than usual thanks for the steep gradient.
That train had three of those GE units and not many cars .
@@tommyhaynes9157 pretty sure the first two were EMD SD70's and the third was a GE Dash 9.
Also depends on how fast you running
Trains stopped quickly when collision occurs the brakes apply much quickly when a train derails or colliding like ABS
Woah...
Can I use crash scene in my train compilation video credit to you in video & link of this video in description will be given
6:24 I thought that tow truck was for the train.
The train car that stops in front of your camera reads "TKO" irony at its best
It's like look at me I won I have bunch of supply to handle
Best comment yet!
Triple knock out
Engineer: this stupid S.O.B
Conductor: mannnnnn
Nice videography!! Well done.
Semi: I'm the best thing to happen to cargo!
Train: Are you sure about that?
*crash*
