  • Two trains meet at Richland on the Norfolk Southern Harrisburg Line, but a motorist failed to remained stopped for the red signal and smashes through the crossing gate coming back down on the other side of the crossing. There are some closer shots of the broken gate at the end of the video.

    While waiting for the 94M stone train to come east with a trio of GP38 locomotives, westbound intermodal train 21M came into frame while the camera was rolling. The much anticipated 94M was struggling to make track speed on wet rail with a heavy train (they are not in full throttle for good reason) with only 6000 horse-power for a 6000-6500 ton train from the quarry at Annville. The guy in the white pick-up truck found out the hard why it is always a good idea to wait for the gates to go up completely at a double-track mainline. That was the second time in the same month that exact crossing gate was broken by a vehicle.
    21M: NS Dash-9-44CW's 9497, 9317, and 9411
    94M: NS GP38-2 5070 (former high-hood, new admiral cab), NS GP38-3 5827 (rebuilt GP50), and NS GP38-2 5304.

    The gates should have stayed down, unless the train is in a far distance. That second train was pretty close for the gates to rise. And that's why you should wait until the gates are "completely" up and the lights have stopped. Now if that train was going any faster, the gates would have stayed down.

    • @rl1401
      @rl1401 7 лет назад +11

      The gates have to be fully up, as soon as the gates are in this position, the flashing lights stop. If a train hits the block before the gates are fully up, they will start down like we saw here. When fully up, the lights will start flashing and a couple of seconds later, then the gates will start down.
      At least in California, you shall not drive under gates and have to wait for the lights to stop flashing. Almost every driver, including police don’t follow the law.

    This is actually quite a common problem with all gates when trains meet and people being impatient doesn't help either. One day over 20 years ago I was watching trains at the 1st street crossing in Sutersville, PA while waiting for my dad to finish up his bike ride on the bike trail and I watched the same thing happened except the gates went up and they did not come back down although the red lights kept blinking luckily this was at a time of day when traffic was lite and no cars were there. Oh and when highrailers or the MOW crew comes through on their vehicles which don't make the gates go down it's a show of confusion and frustration in it's self. Also a car got hit at the 1st crossing in Sutersville a couple weeks ago while trying to beat a train on track 2 the car ended up on it's roof on track 1.

      +xray606 There was only one cycle in this video and it ended with the lights going off. A few feet of gate opening legally means nothing to drivers. There is nothing to be divided about, the law already states what to do in this situation.

    • @OofBerry1
      @OofBerry1 4 года назад +1

      Sethmonton Dashcam there’s a reason why there are gates and not just a light. Fair enough that the law states he should of waited to fully open but the gates should of stayed down with the train that close (then he wouldn’t of drove). I mean what’s the point of having the gates if they open and go straight down with the train that close as it just gives a false impression that it’s clear to the drivers.

There's plenty of videos that show people not wanting to break it and getting into major trouble, so rather this than being in front of the train. Of course, waiting for the red lights to dim was even better...

While that certain doesn't mean he shouldn't bare the responsibility of what he did, I see no reason why causal observers on RUclips have to revert to such extreme and very derogatory name calling. There should be a minimum 30 second gap between the first and second activations, and if the train is positioned at such closeness that the second activation would occur within the 30 seconds, the 30 seconds would not happen and the first activation will continue until the second train has passed. Have they fixed the issue in the last 7 years?

    So, the motorist most definitely should've waited for the red lights to go out before even thinking about moving, but honestly, it might sound stupid but the driver did the right thing by smashing it and at least clearing the crossing.
    Sometimes when this happened in my country people who got themselves trapped between the gates decided they didn't want to damage their car by driving on and snapping the gate off, and as a result, got their car totaled because of the oncoming train that was on the track they were on (and since trains in The Netherlands can run a regular speed of about 86 miles per hour, though 74 is more common, it takes about 10 seconds from the point of gates down/getting stuck and getting hit by the train.)

    There should be some sort of law stating that a vehicle may not pass under the gate while flashing lights are activate. You’re basically running a red light. You MUST wait until the crossing is deactivated. If it does deactivate wait 10 seconds before crossing. Another train may be coming. In Texas, a train hit a K-9 vehicle because it went around the gate and the train hit it. Don’t let that be you. You don’t know how fast that train could be coming. Especially on a curve. You obviously can’t see around it. So don’t take a chance

    I can see both sides to the arguments in the comments. It was kind of dumb luck mixed with a small amount of driver error. The fact of the matter is, it is the law that you cannot cross the tracks until the lights are off and the gates are up and deactivated. However, the block sensors should be modified so that things such as this won't happen. Not hating, just trying to be the voice of reason.

    So, did you call the NS police desk and report the broken gate (the emergency phone number on the little blue sign on the light pole)? That would be called a "partial activation failure", because it's only part of the crossing gates that are malfunctioning or broken, not the entire system. Following crews would have to stop and flag the crossing until it's fixed. I used to be a CSX engineer and watched a semi-tractor/trailer rig just plow through the gates in front of me on Washington Blvd. in Baltimore on the Mt. Clare branch because we were only doing 10 mph and they didn't wan to wait for us to clear. Snapped it off like a twig.

    • @CentralPennRailProductions

      The stone train crew saw what happened and reported it. Trains had to stop and flag, I filmed once, but removed the video because the crew member reached out to me and did not want to appear on RUclips and I always respect that, especially in a day an age where management watches their every move. Anyway, a signal maintainer showed up later in the afternoon and fixed it.

That's why crossing gates are built to bend and break in case of situations like that. If they weren't, the driver would've had a bad day, if you know what I mean.

    Aren't the lights the most important part of a full-service (signs, gates, block circuit, etc.) crossing?

    Awful! That driver needs to be cited and the railroad file a claim with his insurance! That’s why lots of places have laws where you are not supposed to cross until the signals completely deactivate!

    In my state, the rail crossings to start to lift until the lights are done flashing. Seems like the fault of the crossing mechanism. The driver *could* have stopped. But shouldn't have. hopefully he pulled into that parking lot and called 9-11.
