The most EPIC train race you'll ever see! Amtrak vs. BNSF in Ottumwa, IA 12/9/14

- I've seen something like this before, but never this perfect, and was left speechless! On December 9th, 2014, I went to the Amtrak station in Ottumwa to see the eastbound California Zephyr arrive. BNSF was having the train pull into the station on Main track #1, due to freight trains up the line already running on main track #2. This was so Amtrak could overtake all the freights before crossing over to #2 again, the normal track for eastbounds. This also allowed BNSF to keep running the freights through Ottumwa on main #2. I'd already heard an eastbound freight get a track warrant to head east, and knew it would be approaching soon. Before it showed up, Amtrak came into view, and stopped at the IC&E RRX crossover (in the distance at the opening of the video) to get its warrant. Just as they finished copying it, the freight train rounded the bend, and the show began. As you'll see, the freight train on main #2 approaches, followed by Amtrak on main #1. Amtrak is quite a ways behind but catches up as it accelerates towards the station. Practically hitting Gateway Drive at the same time, Amtrak gets caught up to the freight as they're neck-and-neck, passing my camera almost perfectly. Of course Amtrak had to stop, so the freight train won the "race", but only by a nose!

I was a dispatcher for UP, one time I had two intermodal trains neck and neck for 110 miles through the Arizona desert. Would have loved someone to have got that on video.

My mind cannot comprehend having two trains travelling neck and neck like that for such a distance. I am amazed but also befuddled how on earth that happened. There just wasn't any opposing traffic for that long? Amazing.

That Amtrak train is the California Zephyr, which runs from Chicago to Oakland/San Francisco. After leaving Illinois it runs through the southern half of Iowa and on to Omaha, Denver, Salt Lake City, Reno, and finally San Fran... 😀
Nice! Always good if there's room between the tracks to set up the tripod, I've gotten train-race situations before, but from the side of double tracks, where the Amtrak comes up the far side of the freight and can't be seen -- oof, just dying to get in a little track walking these days, and set up some interesting shots!
That was EPIC!!!!!!!!!! I like how it looked like both trains split off in 2 directions, coming at you, wish I could get that here

It's a great shot from a video perspective, but honestly it happens all the time. At least on 2 occasions I've seen it with my own eyes. Riding across Canada outside Jasper we raced trains for a good amount of time. Now if I do this trip every 5 years imagine how many times this really does happen? I've also seen 2 freights do this at Welland Canal once they got a clear signal when the bridge went down on a double track mainline. Honestly with that title I expected something I've never seen. My son is 9, and he has never seen it. But for this 40 something seen it twice already, and several videos on RUclips in the past as well.

You're welcome! There's two routes: the California Zephyr (shown in this video) stops in Burlington, Mt Pleasant, Ottumwa, Osceola, Creston, and Omaha. The Southwest Chief skirts the lower southeast corner of Iowa with a stop in Ft Madison.
I wonder how come the Amtrak engine had it's bottom lights flashing where bnsf didn't.

+Robert Wicker I just crossed the first track (the one on the right) and walked down the middle platform at the station. There's a pedestrian crossover right in front of the station to get to the middle platform.
