This is absolutely incredible. I've literally never seen an interview with an automotive CEO which didn't feel like a presser, and here we have Ineos CEO sitting down for an hour-long grilling, and IMO killing it. Lynn Calder you are a legend! Awesome podcast episode!

I have a Grenadier and absolutely love it. It is my daily driver but it also spends a fair amount of time in the Eastern Sierra, San Bernardino mountains, and Southern Utah. This is a special car.
Lynn is the perfect person to be at the helm of Ineos Automotive. She is so impressive.

I have Two and a Quartermaster on Order. Sold two 200 series Land Cruisers, 2013 and 2021, both well modified winches and aux fuel tanks. I just assume throw rocks at the Land Cruisers, even the 2021 I swore I would never sell. No issues, Zero, none! Great off road and extremely comfortable, economical (comparatively speaking) and good performance on 450 mile freeway slog to Seattle 75-80 MPH over 19 MPG.

What an amazing CEO! She’s whip smart, logical and has a great sense of humor.
It’s no wonder that those of us that own a Grenadier are so happy with them. You can see everyone at Ineos really believes in the product and it’s not just a number for them.
I wish INEOS and Lynn all the best of luck !

She’s a Superstar loved how she came back at the “your an energy CEO” point from Matt! That was a great episode what a refreshing change from the last few months. The only facepalm was when Matt had to clarify “I’m a cat guy” 🤦‍♂️

Jim Radcliffe must be a great boss. Because to have a CEO to communicate so relaxed and open in a podcast is refreshing. And she gives a great representation of an ex energy company CEO. Because I image people in American think of Dick Channey or Jeff skilling. Scots make great leaders we always punch well above our weight. Scotlands biggest export is not whiskey as many people think. It’s brains 🧠

    00:00 - intro
00:56 - “We have fans?” - the TST fanbase cold open and how Lynn Calder’s day has been going
02:25 - INEOS is an interesting car company and where did it come from?
14:04 - how did Lynn get to CEO of INEOS? And what’s the hardest part (besides supply chain)?
    22:16 - why BMW engines?
24:08 - what’s INEOS’ biggest sales market? How many sales would Lynn be happy making?
31:08 - is customization/personalization something that INEOS customers are asking for? Is the analog nature of the interior a requirement from being able to use the switchgear with gloves?
37:58 - is there anything about buying engines from BMW that limits/constrains you in some way?
    Patreon questions:
40:22 - do you think the typical INEOS customer uses it as a daily driver? And as the Grenadier iterates over time would you want to make it more luxurious or more conventional to meet that demand?
43:33 - great work on making the Grenadier such a low-key “if you know you know” vehicle; how hard was that to keep it low-key and not go over the top with badges and logos? Was there a temptation to put logos all over it?
    44:28 - any plans for a two-door?
46:55 - what is the flaw in EVs that INEOS seeks to correct and what makes your approach different from other OEMs?
52:50 - does INEOS hope the Grenadier will gain the same following as Land Rover has where in 30+ years people will be restoring/restomodding it to cope with whatever that modern world is?
54:37 - plans to make an AMG/M competitor performance model?
55:30 - besides the US, what are your next two biggest markets?
56:15 - (something about US availability of the Quartermaster)
56:52 - while in town, what LA things will Lynn do?
    58:38 - outro

I have now driven 30,000 miles in my April 2023 Grenadier; it's been a fabulous replacement for 1989/1991 LR Defenders. My only complaint is the lack of the official workshop manual, which was promised from the start but 15 months later there is no clue how it might be delivered. The early publicity suggested something close to an "open source" solution, but that does not seem to have survived the IP lawyers. dealer interests and self importance by minor players. I'm keeping my powder dry, but a trip to consumer law is not out of the question.

In April 2020 the new Land Rover defender was introduced to the public in the James Bond Movie "No Time to Die" which showed off the Extreme Abilities of the Defender 110 model , therefore Mrs Calder should consider "Donating a number of Ineos Grenadier Quartermasters to a Action Film Production Company " that would show off the Extreme capability of the Grenadier to a Wider Worldwide Audience

It's a pleasure listening to Lynn Calder, makes me want to submit my CV to work for Ineos. Policymakers in the EU should pay more attention to people in the industry when making decisions to ban ICE engines. It infuriates me when I hear people with no experience or industry knowledge making decisions which will have a huge impact on people's lives.

From my perspective the marketable point of different is the complete lack of clutter in the interior. Drive a Gladiator at 60mps on the highway and find and activate aux switch number 3 with going off the road and killing yourself. I have a quartermaster configured at $112,000 which I’ll never be able to buy but it’s fun to watch the brand go forward.

If only INEOS can sort out their customer service. As an owner of an '89 110 swapped 300tdi, and '22 110, I was most excited. So excited I was one of the first reservation holders.
Then they updated their system, asked everyone that had reserved in the past two years to re-enter the their info for the new system. There was no mention of the queue being dropped and everyone losing their spot to the new order of reservations placed. I didn't rush it, and got screwed. Reached out to support and they told me I was a liar haha! Cancelled then and there. Forums shared my sentiment. New people were happy though!
They have a ways to go but I remain hopeful. I love both of my rigs but a 10 year old g wagen remains the better option than the INEOS atm.

Go test a Ineos for 48 hours and then tell me you prefer a 2014 rust pit G wagon , don’t get me started on G wagon suspension and steering . Grens light years ahead although very similar technology . I daily drive my Fieldmaster and it’s on Eibach 2.5” lift with 34’s. Don’t millions of people daily drive Wranglers in the US and even put Rubber Duckies on their dashboard? I think the Grenadier is better in every way but same idea…am I missing something?

I've seen a bunch of Grenadiers in the UAE and that's saying something, considering you could just buy a LC300 like everyone else for about the same price (and those really hold their value).

In my country new LC250 (diesel only, btw) and the Grenadier are not that much different in price. But I've yet to see both of them on the road.

On Harry's Garage video where he reviews it, the comments are full of people who say they have the old Defender and can't imagine paying $75k for a car that replicates that experience. It'll be interesting to see how it does sales wise.

I switched from a 2015 end of line defender to an IG. Its more expensive but its over engineered and will last longer. So, the cost over ownership period is not so bad.

Harry's original video was rubbish (I love his video's normally) and at the time he was a Landrover consultant. His new one on the Quartermaster is much better and he acknowledges that he made some mistakes on the original one.

Finally a Defender with lockers just make them standard, a second hand one may be used at a farm. And the portal axles another great idea.
She light up about driving a V8 one, daa, make that too. Uhh I now realise why she didn't tell what engine, because it's the bmw superior the AMG V8 600hp

They're too expensive here in NZ and their sales teams are car saleman ring ins,not 4WD specialists.
I have been waiting for a follow up call since showing serious interest at our 4wd show in August.
My dedicated hunting wagon is a 2014 defender 110 double cab and i would change to Ineos if they were cheaper.

INEOS are discovering why LR went upmarket with the Defender, the market for an old school 4x4 is incredible small. In the UK farmers have long since moved to double cab pickups, the Army still use the Defender and will replace them with something more bespoke. Why spend 70k on an Ineos when there are 10s of thousands of the real deal for significantly less money🤷‍♂️
You can buy a Grenadier with a huge discount because it’s the only way they can sell them.
5 years tops and Jim will have got bored and pulled the plug.
They promised cheap and built in the UK, they delivered neither.

Land Rover sold over 114,000 new Defenders world wide, just in 2023, which is close to being their best selling model in a year ever, only the Discovery Sport in 2017 managed more. They've currently sold over 350k new Defenders in total. Ineos have built around 20,000 Grenadiers and UK sales are really, really small, sales for 2024 up until Sept were just 400. So I'm not sure there's a BIG market for the old Defender or the Grenadier. I guess the question for Ineos is will the size of that niche be big enough to survive?

  • @jamesmichael5475

I test drove the Grenadier, it is impressive, the steering takes a bit of getting used to, and the turning radius is awful. The lack of sound deadening insulation and components isn't that noticeable at slower speeds, but when traveling on the highway, exceeding 50 mph, the in-cabin noise levels became exceedingly intrusive. The lack of power seats on what can be a 98K vehicle as i speced is absurd. The Defender can be rinsed down and it has power seats, so the excuse that they didn't want to short the electrical system when rinsing the vehicle down, is ridiculous on its face, as engineers should have been able to sufficient engineer protection of the wring.
