It's really REALLY impressive to engineer a car "out of nothing" as a first try, and get it so good.
Hat's off to the engineers !

    • @MrOst-fm4rj
      @MrOst-fm4rj Месяц назад +5

To be honest this car is engineered by the same company that builds the G Wagon, arguably one of the best SUVs ever made.
And they chose good reputable parts, B58/57 (best petrol and diesel powertrain available in the 250-400ho category), ZF8, best auto trans for the last 15 years, Carrara Axles, overkill tractor stuff, Tremec geared transfer case, etc.
This is what you get when you choose to build a tough 70k~100k SUV. Everything else has compromises, either luxury/comfort or lack of budget.

The founder of the Grenadier is a big fan and owner of the old LR Defenders. The Grenadier was not developed from nothing, it was developed from all the negative and bad features and qualities of an old Defender!

As a UK owner of a 2 seat IG van for 17 months, think your about right. Software switches you need to reset and learn. But it's the most capable standard truck you can probably buy. I use mine for work as a fencing and forestry contractor. It's better than my old defender 130.
Apparently they are thinking of producing the Quartermaster on factory portals and there would be room for an under slung tank. It's good to see you looking at different vehicles, keeps the channel fresh.

@stevegreen101 but if produced by Ineos then you hope you would be covered by some warranty. Surely they would not warrant a modified vehicle unless it was an approved conversion, like say for example Pedders are for Isuzu, or Artic Trucks? Sorry I am not familiar with LeTech.

This is pretty spot on and a good honest review based on actual experience, in quite a few different environments. We should do one at some point! We’re currently on a 5-year trip in a Grenadier across the world towing a Patriot X3, which we live in. We set off from London in mid-July 2023 with our two young kids and we’re approaching 50000km. At least 70% of our journey has been off-road... top job Ronny! 👍

Best view of the Grenny so far. I’m up to 48,000km in mine now. I pretty much agree with your findings. I love mine and wouldn’t swap it for anything, except maybe the Quartermaster although I think the rear legroom in the QM is not quite as good as the waggon, and I have almost 3 teenagers. My only gripes are the lack of a workshop manual which was promised at launch. Come on INEOS, it’s been 2 years now! The lack of a fault code reader that can clear codes and reset service intervals is also a gripe. I guess this will come, the demand is there! I recently serviced mine myself and had to go back to the dealer anyway to get the service interval reset.. not good. Overall I’m delighted with is though.

Mr. Dahl I can’t tell you how overjoyed and maybe even a little relieved by this final assessment because your opinion on these matters is one that can’t be ignored, unlike some who borrowed a Grenadier for a weekend, mainly because I have two in the Garage and a quartermaster on order. I sold two well modified 200 series Land Cruisers, 2013 and 2021 that i just assume throw rocks at before Grenadier ownership that I swore I would never sell.

Yes, I was an early adopter. Yes, she still brings a smile to my face every time I driver her. Yes, resetting switches is a bit annoying, but at least it's only a couple of switches. You don't have to go through various menus to get to settings. As someone that nearly bought (another) Toyota, I absolutely agree with your sentiments around what you would need to add to a 76 to bring it to the same kit level as the Grenadier, and I still love how easy she makes rough ground to drive.
So how long until we see you with a Quartermaster cab chassis and Norweld tray? 😉

Great objective review Ronny - I’m quite sure without prompting from Ineos…Great vehicle!
Almost embryonic of the petrol Ineos , is my ‘98 110 defender with (SA) 2,8i BMW petrol engine tweaked up to 180kW . 60km/h at 3600 rpm in low ratio (peak kW) and 75km/h at 4200 rpm (peak torque) which makes it really good in sand (can rev happily to 5500/6000rpm max 175km/h). Fitted a Detroit Trutrac rear LSD and low level fuel and water tanks - to make 120l and 100l respectively. Best consumption 11 l/100km @ 120 km/h. 200 000km mostly bush from Cape Town to Zambia and everywhere in between. Worst consumption 17l/100km into headwind with roof tent on. Average 13-14l/100km
Solo only, with a satellite phone which I only used to say hi to the kids. 1 clutch renewed in etosha at 170 000km. (PS not an oil leak ever).
I think Ineos has got it really good barring the awkward fuel mods….

After 7,000 miles my top 5 things I like. 1. Insane off road capability. 2. Insane durability 3. Looks 4. Easy of modification 5. We only buy triple locker solid axle cars for our family. Dont like 1. ADAS nonsense 2. Software glitches such as fuel gauge and check engine lights ( need to get it in for software updates) 3. Buttons resetting off road, same as you. 4. Poorly thought out stock rock slider and access with no grab handle for driver 5. Honestly, this list is hard. Maybe steering on road? Not hard, just more tiring on long pavement trips. The reality is the Grenadier is not for a lot of people, as it is so specific case use. But for our family, its perfect.

Just remove the matt and cut the foot rest off and refit- it will feel totally more comfortable whilst driving.

I recently completed a 25,000km trip around northern Australia starting and finishing in Perth.
I did see a few Grenadiers around the cities but very few (almost none) in the more remote areas (Queensland/NT).
After watching this video I can only conclude that it is not the capability of the vehicle that makes it hard to use in these areas, but the range.
I think I saw some underbody shots of the grenadier and it all looked pretty packed in with little space to install a proper long range fuel tank.
The external tanks are a solution I guess, but as you said in the video they created extra work and personally I would not like the look of those things stuck on the outside.
I would also be concerned about them falling off or failing physically, which could lead to very serious consequences away from other refuelling options.

Unfortunately not true for the LC150. If it has KDSS - which most do have - then space restriction is very bad for the extra fuel tank. Only about 35L could be added and they cost still a lot to modify (around 4K Euros here in Europe) making it usually not worth the money unless you can install and vet it yourself.

I test drove one in London today. It was beautiful, I sat very high up, it was very comfortable and it felt like I imagine what driving a tank would feel. Two insurmountable obstacles for my were 1. The awful turning circle - surely this could be made tighter. 2. No satnav - what? With constantly changing road conditions all over the uk we need information on alternative routes all the time. And finally, there are some changes to the taxation of Chelsea tractors which are going to add many thousands of pounds to the cost of these beautiful vehicles. I loved the look, I loved the drive but those two problems made purchase impossible.

Apple car play is better than any satnav I have used. It’s always up to date and traffic data is live. Plus you can use any phone mapping app like Gaia gps. It works well.

you don't want sat nav built into your vehicle by the manufacturer. they rarely get updates and are obsolete quickly. far better off having an aftermarket stand alone one that's better from the start.

    • @pantoqwerty

Offroad vehicles don’t generally have tight turning circles and London is hardly the intended domain of this vehicle - LR Defender is what you’re after.

Sat Nav you can get when your phone is paired with the head unit. Steering can be adjusted, some owners have wound the limiting bolt on the diff to make it turn tighter.

I have a very heavily modified 4Runner, I am in the US and it’s our best option. I started building out the truck as soon as I purchased it new, this was the plan for it when I bought it. I still have to admit it is very scary to drill holes in the roof for lighting and power to a tent and power in from solar. I did it right with extremely good cable glands but there is no going back from this type of mod. The same goes for a raised air intake, I have no regrets but not having to do this would be awesome. The first rumblings about the Grenadier came to light just before I bought my truck I considered waiting but decided not to because it wasn’t even a sure thing at this time. Very glad I didn’t wait because the diesel ended up not being sold here. The fuel issue would be compounded with gas. Still a really cool truck but I will stick with my tried and true Toyotas. Cheers

We traded our Four Runner for a Grenadier. Light years ahead of a 4 Runner. Fuel range? I have only done one trip across multiple states off road, and did not have a jerry can mount or anything yet and went days. With long range tanks coming out, that can be fixed easily. The 4 runner, on the other hand has so many limitations and is hard to modify.

Not only large batteries. All the “safety tech” that are mandatory are adding more and more weight also.
In the case of the grenadier, the frame is just too massive (you would not believe how think the walls and the cross members are) also the axles are pretty heavy but also duty

Its everything the Land Rover Defender should have been to continue its legacy, instead of becoming a "Chelsea tractor". I am sure there are things we will see Ineos change and improve on as models get updated, but as a first car from a company that has never made a vehicle before - its awesome. Nice review Ronny.

lmao these comments. Do you know how many Defenders LR have been selling? They’ve absolutely knocked it out of the park with a very desirable and very capable 4WD that wouldn’t be the case if they had done what a few people say that it ‘it should have been’ otherwise. It’s cool that the Grenadier exists for people who love the old Defender to get something new but it’s completely ignorant to say that the Defender brand has somehow failed.

@ And do you know the percentage that have spent more than 3 weeks having major warranty repairs done - over 36% according to stats from JLR themselves. That really is not good for a vehicle like this.
