@@amandab8433 yeah that would be interesting. In most of these videos there’s young sassy traveller girls in the backgrounds who show no intention of marrying young, but I wonder if the culture gets to them and they change their minds. I wonder if some of the girls that do get married young also felt the same way when they were kids. Traveller culture is so fascinating to me.

It's like the gypsies elsewhere, called Sinti and Roma. They deliberately marry off their daughters at a young age (talk about 14 ...) so they are bound in marriage, with little children, before they can develop a mind of their own, and become strong enough to protect their independance.
It's a way of imprisoning them. They know it, but feel helpless to do anything about it. If the marriage is unhappy, and they are beaten, they still can't get out, because they have absolutely no education, can't read or write, and wouldn't be able to support themselves (let alone their children) financially. So they remain trapped, and often beaten for their whole life.
Others call it culture, I call it oppression.

I have worked the 12 hour days and I have kids and at least with a job you know there is an end to the day. Being a housewife that is not an option and it is even more true when you have kids until about age 4 the will need you 24 hours a day. That's just the kids the men don't know how to do any of the house hold work they can't even do there own laundry let alone cook, clean and take care of kids all at the same time. I have 4 kids and I love my kids but if you asked be what was easier working long days with an hour drive each way or staying home with my kids working was way easier than staying home with my kids. That was almost 36 years ago, and our marriage is stronger now than ever! We only knew each other a total of 7 months before marrying. I knew he was the one for me, and he knew I was the one for him. We are dedicated to each other and to God. That's the key. I hope these youngsters are still going strong, and the little sister is only married if she is ready!

@@julianokleby1448 Congratulations on your wonderful marriage. We will celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary, and our 35 anniversary of being together this April and June. I'm aware of the tradition of teen marriages in the Gypsy/Traveler community. Statistically in the US teen marriages are 48% more likely to end in divorce in the first ten years, as apposed to only 10% for those who marry after the age of 25. The numbers are similar in the UK. I've looked into the success rates of the marriages for the teen couples on these shows, and there is a very high rate of divorce in the first five years. Mostly due to spousal abuse. While the shows are entertaining to watch, and we all hope for the best for the couples, unfortunately most don't end well. Also that most of the young women have no education beyond the 8th grade or high school they end up back with their families, which is wonderful that they have that to fall back on.

Maybe it's not traditionally elegant, and even what some might call tacky, but by God, they're FUN! To be truly "tacky" you have to take yourself seriously and believe you're not tacky--but these families are enjoying their "tackiness" and having a lot of fun with it, loving the bright colors and attention. They're saying, We're over the Top, we're deliberately tacky and we Love it, this is who we are....and that's amazing and wonderful. Edited to also say, I think it's amazing that the bride and others have no issue with All the women being over the top. No one is whinging about how a bridesmaid or cousin or mom wore a dress that tried to compete with the Bride. hi this is what writes on wikipedia about them:
"Irish Travellers (Irish: an lucht siúil, meaning the walking people), also known as Pavees or Mincéirs[3] (Shelta: Mincéirí)[4] are a traditionally peripatetic indigenous[5] ethno-cultural group originating in Ireland"
      and
"The Romani, also spelled Romany or Rromani and colloquially known as the Roma , are an ethnic group of Indo-Aryan origin who traditionally lived a nomadic, itinerant lifestyle. Linguistic and genetic evidence suggests that the Romani originated in the Indian subcontinent, in particular the region of present-day Rajasthan"@@Nai7547

All these girls are so nice, they genuenly seem like really kind and warm people. On top of that almost all of them are children. I can't believe a 16-year old child is getting married. How can a parent let their kid marry at such a young age? I feel like ever since they were little these girls were taught that their only worth something as brides, and super you at that. Ina is like almost 10 years younger that me in this video. but she looks and gives off this vibe like she's older than me. And i need to say this again, all of them really seem like great girls. Such a shame they were brought up as literally a "market meat". I don't believe every Traveller Woman is and was happy with her marriage and yet they still put their girls into the same situation. Often times the grooms are like 10 or more years older than girls. If you look at this like that: a 16 year old with a 26-30 year old. Doesn't it sound like pedophilia? On top of that Ina talking about the wedding day being the last time a girl is free - that's just fucking sick and very sad. I have mixed feelings. She kinda seems happy, but she's also really sad. I kinda feel like this wedding is the doing of her uncle and then her parents, because of "honour". IDK people can say what they want, but no one in the universe is able to convince me this is culture. This is a system comfortable for men, who just want to use their strenght to literally take advantage of children and women in general. For me that's sick. Even more sick than what is happening to women overall. And also it's scary that even those super young boys are taught such shit baisically

Having seen many of these episodes, I'm struck by how beautiful the girls and women are. But it never seems to translate to the men. The way the women in this family look, I'd expect the men and boys to look like Elvis, but nope.
What I don't understand with these dresses, is why they choose dresses that hurt, that they can't walk, dance, or even get into the car with. Also, in the days when women actually wore dresses that were heavy with material, hoops and petticoats, they wore layers between themselves and the shapewear and outer garments. This took away direct pressure and contact with the skin. Why wouldn't modern dressmakers understand this concept?

The times I thought I was in love as a teenager and even young twenty something were with people so ill matched to who I am in my thirties… I couldn’t imagine living in a culture where I probably would have jumped at the chance to marry one of those guys at a young age. I would be so unhappy now. Luckily, my parents have always pushed me and my siblings to spend time being single, getting to know ourselves, working on improving ourselves, and living life before getting into a serious relationship. I come from the opposite influence of cultures where people marry young. There was a strong influence to not even seriously date until it least mid twenties.
