Easy to figure out they doing that just so they get married at early age, after they married off they dress up more modestly, don't work but procreate as many children as they possibly can, that is the life of gypsies. I would like to know more who earns the money and how here or they just all on walfare?
I love how when they asked him what he liked about her all he could say was that she cooked and cleaned for him. Didn't say she was pretty or smart just shows why he's really marrying her.
So if he said it was her beauty (which fades) that he found attractive, you’d be happy with that? I’m sure he was attracted to be tbh. Women marry men for resources in our modern culture, so I’m not sure what the issue is.
Its absolutely heart-wrenching to think about all the sexual assault these girls go thru. Cheyenne tryingnto convince herself that what happened made me cry. Hell I was 22 when I got married, to a old religion catholic family I was even informed that my place was in the kitchen & taking care of the family. Which still gives me the chills; to be told "Im happy if my husband is happy, and if he strays that's just him getting what he needs" It broke my heart, and after he turned violent everyone turned a blind eye. @@noriceflynn1727 Not trying to sound rude, but it is good to know not all travelers are like that. Then again, you can't always believe what you see online. I admit I was very astounded when I saw that girls get married at such a young age and the boys grabbing the girls. I won't speak badly of something I don't know, I can always voice my opinion, that I think it can be terrifying to just get grabbed and dragged away by a random boy/stranger (in case you don't know them, I presume you don't all know eachother?) And of course missing out on a lot of experiences, one get as you get older than 16. And I admit, I sometimes wonder if the girls miss school?... As far as I have learned from the show, there are a few girls who choose not to get married and 'break the cycle' for a lack of better words. However, I do want to know if they choose to do that, "breaking the cycle", do the girls get shunned? Or are there groups of travelers who respect their decision? I am honestly curious. One half of me is faszinated with the culture, the other is furious about a community that only allows/offers women an identity as pretty princess, womb and housekeeper. That is all their identeties are allowed to be.
I feel the same especially since it seems that in certain areas it's also the norm with Mormons and JWs and Evangelicals with similar ridiculous attitudes...
and the way they are taught to dance from so young. They are pure girls but the way they are taught to dress and dance is the complete opposite. It's all set up for the men, clearly.
I bet the DV in these communities is awful. It’s the same in any communities that has very rigid roles about what makes men and women different. I don’t mind traditional roles (if both are happy) and there is mutual respect, love and commitment. It’s the foundation on which all else is built. I also think they’re too young to understand this level of dedication to each other.

Your parents sound lovely. It's good to hear your daddy let you choose how you wanted to live your life, which is rare in your culture. But I hate how others judge others for the way they live. Just a quick question. Do people judge you when they learn of your heritage, even though you've been brought up more "modern"? I hope not, as there is absolutely nothing wrong with the culture you are part of. Others just don't like what they don't understand.
So if a guy wants a girls number he gets to essentially kidnap her, hold her hostage and even go as far as breaking her arm? What happened to just asking for it? I know this is an old one because Josie and Swanley are divorced with a kid and Cheyenne is married with 2 kids and her husband (Josie’s brother) went to prison for armed robbery and attempted kidnapping on some poor lady in broad daylight. These people talk about how they’re discriminated against yet they’re incredibly judgmental of "country" people and very rude towards them.
Im not blaming them right now 2022 the English government wanna push through a law saying if u dont move, they can take your home. Which will destroy a lifestyle and put pressure on housing. They get accused of leaving rubbish but need permits for dumps and if there being moved on won't have time to move the rubbish. Drinking red bull all day, eating unhealthy foods etc. these are certainly not traditional travellers no matter what they may say. They have made their own traditions. My family are Romani/English travellers. (Family’s from both sides married into each-other.) My family are extremely old fashioned and very into their spirituality like tarot cards, rune stones, crystals, fortune telling and witchcraft. I feel sometimes ashamed to tell people where my family are from because they then jump to conclusions and assume we are like what you see on TV. When that really isn’t the case! My family used to live on a site until early 2000s and then move into houses, last person to live on our site was my grandad who died in 2018. Now my cousin and her baby have moved into a shalley there also with a distant relative in a caravan to keep it ours, rest of the plot is rented out to people. We would own horses and dogs back in the day, As usual. But never would women wear the kinds of things you see in these modern day “travellers”. Our clothing was more bohemian with bangles, head scarfs and beautiful patterned dresses that were not showing cleavage and belly’s and under bum. I do feel our culture has been corrupted in a way by this new modern day aesthetic of what a traveler should be. And the beautiful vardos (wagons) we would own which had beautiful patterns and gold outlining with those beautiful painted shutters for the windows. Its such a shame to hardly see them around anymore.. 😔 Please do not think we are all like what is being portrayed on tv! 🙏🏻

I giggled all through my vows because we’d been together 8 years and everyone was staring at us like we were doing a play with these solemn, crying, earnest faces like it was some super serious ceremony-we’re aetheists throwing a big party nothing was going to change in our relationship!! At one point I set my husband off too crossing my eyes (it was near the end of the ceremony and I was getting bored of standing all silent and proper) and the priest almost went 😂 This social construct that weddings should be serious is just that, let them love how they love-it’s their day!
These girls are more in love with getting married and having the perfect wedding dress to outdo everyone else. Most don't seem to excited about the actual marriage and who they are marrying. I give it a year at most ... plus a kid, then divorce followed by another wedding ,or 2!
Thats not how they do it they only marry once even if they get divorced there is no second and third wedding they can get back with the same person but no one new thats not what they do
I think they know going into it that the actual being married part isn't much fun for the wife. They've watched what their mothers go through. I can't blame them for wanting one extra-special day to look back on during the hard times.

I think its terrible how the people are conditioned to believe all this. That it's fine to be sexually harassed and assaulted. The fact hat they think it's normal for boys to grab them and attack them until they get a kiss is just disgusting.
They raise their men to be wife beaters and criminals and their women to be servants and child raisers. Very sad. This isn’t what most traditional travellers are about at all from what I’ve seen. Some are like this but have long forgotten the real traditions. Many old time gypsys were good hardworking people with high morals and high standards of home keeping. Not like these scallys who steal and lie and rip people off, grab and abuse women, and the women who dress like prostetutes and beat up pregnant women. Shameful to say the least.

Nice friend, she left her there, when she clearly wanted help, but by the look of her face, I can tell that she was jealous of her! Because none of the boys make a move on her.
In the US, I've seen them walk through a grocery store opening packages and eating, then putting them back. Or carrying around fruit eating it without paying for it. Once couple paid for a candy bar but left a trail of open packages behind. My best friend in junior high was a gypsy. He told me we couldn't date because he'd been betrothed at birth to a girl in our class. They really did get married after graduation. His mother was a palm reader. She's had a sign out front of a building for over 30 years. His father was a roofer. He was too at 14. He spread tar on roofs. I can't vouch for their honesty, but some would show up at people's driveways, ask for money in advance to resurface the drive, then never return. Thievery and trickery has been the way of the gypsy's I've known personally.
26:05 ok I can’t b the only one who thinks this is just utterly bizarre. I mean the whole thing kind of is. But these babies partying it up in the limo really threw me for a damn loop even more

This is how they control their girls. Having deprived them of an education, forcing them to leave school early to learn to be obedient wives, they can only get them to comply by promising a fairytale wedding as something to look forward to. Therefore the parents spend a lifetime saving for weddings, baptisms & communion
This is a dumb question but since they often move into caravans after the wedding (even if they eventually move into a house to send their kids to school), where do they store their wedding dresses?
I just can't believe that this docu is about the real gypsys... cause nothing is traditional. Maybe some stuff like traveling but the big weddings dresses...
I had my cheek bone shattered by a traveller because I wouldn’t kiss him after a night out, boy did he hit me and spun me around it happened but I got up and fought him and he left me alone after a while for my bravery
The one person that impressed me the most was “John Boy” he’s such a caring loving and protective big brother to his younger sister. When the little girl becomes of age to marry, if John Boy doesn’t approve of the boyfriend, she’s not getting married, if the husband breaks her heart John Boy will rock n rumble to make things right.
How absolutely horrible! A brother has no business to decide for his sister!! I am disgusted by your sexism! Nothing worse than a woman with the mindset of a slave.
Culture must be respected, but to refuse any chance of progression is worrying. The grabbing thing, I understand travelers are mainly patriarchal but that is traumatic for the girls. And it's instilling dangerous ideals in young boys heads. Respect, preserve and learn from culture, don't let it halt your progress. As the world moves forward so must we.
@@emilywright3454 no she went to prison when she first started her baby clothes business because she was still claiming benefits while working. That was many years before this show.
The weddings that these people throw are the true definition of “valuing the wedding more than the marriage.” They spend loads of money on these trashy, tacky weddings and wedding dresses and put so much thought and effort into the wedding only for most of these couples to divorce within five years of marriage. Sad and ridiculous. Maybe more of their thoughts, time, and other resources should go towards the actual marriage and then the marriages might have a better chance of lasting. Just a thought.
So nobodys gonna talk about The Irish Travellers that had their sons first communion outfit as a fictional African Prince? But they dont like to mix with other breeds? The math aint mathin’

Tragic and tacky. The little girl in her outlandish First Communion costume she could barely walk in had her peers laughing at her. That must have been embarrassing for her. As for all the other odd things associated with this community such as 'grabbing' and being forced to leave school at 11 years of age, it's shocking. No wonder the females are treated merely as chattels and servants; they know no better. Surely the parents should be fined for the latter. They seem to be wealthy regardless of their poor education, so you have to wonder where all their money is coming from, especially with the women not being allowed to work and their ginormous families they keep having. I don't believe for one moment that all their money is made by legitimate means. And why are all the males fighting with each other constantly? I reckon there'd be a fair amount of inbreeding if they rarely allow outsiders in.
A world where 15 year olds can dress very mature and possibly get kidnapped by boys/men yet has to save sex for marriage and live by traditional gender rules? I’m so confused yet so curious. And perhaps this is all misrepresented but the girls seem more interested or at least highly romanticize the wedding than actually being married.
@@ttintagel It’s actually possible for young girls to fantasize a life like that. If they’re expecting this perfect prince charming that will give to your needs regardless of his position in the marriage, they’d totally expect the least expected. That is possible and some people are fine with the way they live, I just don’t think these girls would like it with the way they are.

How do they finance that lifestyle? Like the weddings, the dresses and a 10 person trip to Lanzerote are no small expenses in my mind...
The husband's work and they live in RVs. In their community, they kind of pool their money like lots of other communities do to pay for the big stuff.

Not for many people. Especially them.
You here your friend screaming your name and you still walk away Wtf is wrong with her the girl looked like she wanted to cry
And she ended up marrying that guy
Grabbing is an utterly disgraceful "tradition" and these poor young ladies dont even realise it 😢
26:05 ok I can’t b the only one who thinks this is just utterly bizarre. I mean the whole thing kind of is. But these babies partying it up in the limo really threw me for a damn loop even more
Watching a child of 15 being assaulted was messed up
Not like it matters, but those kids looked younger than her, lol.
That girl walking away as a girl was grabbed and clearly didn't want to be in that situation. Absolutely unacceptable
All I can think about is I’ve seen the episode of Cheyennes wedding and she’s such a sweet girl
she's by far the most well spoken respectful lady this shown has seen. she deserves better
She also looked very sad like she doesn't actually like the way it is poor girl married the boy grabbing her
So they call Indian/ Asians packis but if someone called them a pikey they would throw a fit… kmt double standards is crazy
Omg yes! I was like well Swanley is very racist
Super hypocritical considering Roma culture began in Pakistan/N.India.
My question is...who pays for this...and HOW?!...I kinda want to see the aftermath. TLC portrays this as so beautiful and lavish (like, who WOULDN'T want a wedding as lush as this?!)....living conditions are living in a fecken' trailer....I want to se the continuation of these circumstances ...This is OK?!...Someone give me insight, 'cause I ain't gettin' it.
This is how they control their girls. Having deprived them of an education, forcing them to leave school early to learn to be obedient wives, they can only get them to comply by promising a fairytale wedding as something to look forward to. Therefore the parents spend a lifetime saving for weddings, baptisms & communion
Grifting
Robbin' thievin', scamming social welfare, shoddy tarmac, robbing metal like lead and copper.... Knacker style
When that question arises it is usually due to something shady (not always but in these cases….)
More than likely TLC paid for it themselves just to get the privilege to record their social customs
This is a dumb question but since they often move into caravans after the wedding (even if they eventually move into a house to send their kids to school), where do they store their wedding dresses?
Just as a guess...they'd get sold or taken apart.
Don’t cry girlie.. you’re not leaving your family forever.. you will be back with children once the shine wears off.
"She can fight for herself." As soon as she said my name I would've bodied that dude.
I just can't believe that this docu is about the real gypsys... cause nothing is traditional. Maybe some stuff like traveling but the big weddings dresses...
“He’s gonna be the AFRICAN prince” excuse me
The children make their own way to church ⛪️ for their communion 😮! Where r the parents & adult supervision? 😳 its wild!
How can her friend just walk away when she is clearly uncomfortable and struggling...
They were having seizures all up on that dance floor 😂😂
Its called the "Rathkeale shake".
If she doesn’t know who Audrey Hepburn is then she’s too young for you lol
This is exactly what I was thinking lmao
I've just realised, throughout the years, Thelma has a cast or support on her wrist. She must have rsi or carple tunnel from making those dresses 😔
I believe she had carpel tunnel surgery at one point but I don't remember lol
She does but she can work she went to prison for benefit fraud due to it
@@emilywright3454 no she went to prison when she first started her baby clothes business because she was still claiming benefits while working.
Why not just put all this effort into going to Prom
@@JanGlow To go to Prom you need to finish school first ..... Like that is going to happen for the travellerettes
@@anthonyhassett true
I can't believe she asked who Audrey Hepburn is??? Lol... Breakfast at Tiffany's is a classic
This is fascinating but it infuriates me. I can’t believe a culture like this exists in the first world.
I literally made sure I could sit in my wedding gown before I bought it lol
Swanly changed into his wife beater before he even left reception! That’s dedicated
Your username is mighty appropriate here - up there with "Darwin Awards" 😂😂😂
The composure of the bride squawking her wedding vows was surpassed by her graceful gliding walk when exiting the church.
I love how they use Eddie Murphy's movie Coming to America as the template for their communion outfits that is awesome
So nobodys gonna talk about The Irish Travellers that had their sons first communion outfit as a fictional African Prince? But they dont like to mix with other breeds?
The math aint mathin’
When they said inspired by “coming to America” I had to give them all the side eye.
It’s apparently ok to steal from another culture, just not mix with it
I think they just like the movie.
This was like 20 years ago, people thought differently back then. I don't think anybody was trying to make fun of anybody or cultural appropriate or whatever. I think they genuinely like the look. Not offensive.
@samanthaparmley1386
TBH it doesn't sound like the actual being married part is much fun for the wife. Wouldn't be for me, anyway.
@@ttintagel It’s actually possible for young girls to fantasize a life like that. If they’re expecting this perfect prince charming that will give to your needs regardless of his position in the marriage, they’d totally expect the least expected.
The idea that if he loves you enough, him taking charge wouldn’t be an issue for her. That is possible and some people are fine with the way they live, I just don’t think these girls would like it with the way they are.
Yeah you have to beat off the potential rapists to prove your worth
I would never put someone’s culture down and truth be told I have much admiration for Travelers and Gypsies and their cultures and deep family roots. That being said WTF! The principal’s of the whole “grabbing” ritual is very F&$KED!! Teaching boys to grab a young girl and hurt her until she kisses you knowing that they said no and that their reputation will be tarnished because they were essentially for lack of a better word soft sexually assaulted is barbaric and pretty disgusting. To make matters worse (if that’s even possible) the girls think it’s acceptable and it means the boy likes you and what you want or think doesn’t matter because they don’t matter for anything but being a wife, mother, and maid. It makes me sad and I can understand why people look down at them and it’s a shame because there is a lot of beautiful traits to a traveler. Just my opinion.
It’s a shame that Cheyenne said she’s had “much worse grabs” in the past.
I LOVE this show and the people on this episode seemed so genuinely nice! the only thing outside of grabbing that I felt awkward about was when the guy referred to the asian wedding as p*** ...im very aware that travellers feel ostracised and that people can be racist towards them and call them slurs ...but the way this guy threw out a racist slur himself towards another minority community feels so wrong
That’s exactly I was thinking. There was no need to be racist.
They seemed quite nice if we ignore the racism, sexism, assault and homophobia displayed.
josie (mcfadyen) and swanley had at least one daughter together but got divorced a few years later as he was apparently abusive towards her. her family have been in the papers quite a lot for different things such as accusations of attacks and threatening behaviour
josies sister also got married but divorced later on and got caught trying to smuggle a mobile phone to her ex-boyfriend in jail by hiding it in her baby's nappy
cheyanne got married to john, the guy who grabbed her and they have 4 kids together
Josie went on to have 5 more kids with multiple men which I’m shocked about because I thought that was forbidden and John and Cheyenne are still together and have 4 kids and they look exactly the same like they didn’t age. Josie and John’s parents also got divorced and the little sister Barbara also divorced her husband.
