i have the same car, black on black interior and everything and the same issue soo much so that the peeling looks exactly like mine. Bought a dash on ebay and have been scouring the internet for about 6 months for a detailed video and you delivered. Thank thank thank you.
Thanks for detailed video! Wtf, why hasn't bmw have a recall on this. Mine is slowly starting to peel from up top. I heard from many other bmw owners on other forums with similar issues. There should be a class action lawsuit bc of this issue.
Very informative video. Thank you for sharing. Question, I have x5 f15 with leather dashboard, my leather not cracked but kind of peeled off in some spots, do you think is it possible to remove windshield and kind of glue it back from the front without taking everything off? What is your opinion?
Well, it’s a difficult question to answer without seeing the condition that it is in. But I wouldn’t recommend applying glue because that material shrivels up and becomes hard. It would be difficult to properly lay flat and there will be a gap as it won’t cover the same space anymore. Since the fix isn’t guaranteed I wouldn’t risk damaging the windshield this way.
This is one of the best videos for this type of work. Well done! One Question. Is there anything you recommend replacing while the dash is out? You know, like... Since you're in there, kind of a thing?
Thank you I appreciate that. Most of the things in the dash are replaced if broken. But things I would suggest looking at to see how it’s going off the top of my head are. 1.looking at your center console area for any liquid spills that could of got into the ACSM (airbag control module) with the battery disconnected it is safe to remove the connectors and check for any corrosion inside the connector. 2. If your windshield was recently replaced and you have a wind noise coming through. The repairing company should fix this if it does happen but you can get a good look at the glue and see if there is any missed spots and add some if needed to block the noise. You can also check if the expanding foam tape was replaced. This can also cause a wind noise and in some cases be added during this service. Most G series BMW cars take two strips of expanding foam tape. 3. There is a drain for the evaporator you can look at if you have a water leak. A sweet smell can indicate a coolant leak (usually blue in color for BMW coolant) so a heater core may be leaking. If there is no color and only a moldy smell is present chances are it can be an mis aligned drain. If the leak is closer to the front door areas I would look for clogged water drains in the sunroof or missing lower clips in the door panels. Hope this helps!
This is the first video ever that I comment and like… you are very detailed and informative. I can absolutely remove my dashboard without any hesitation. (In a side note, I wish you didn’t fast forwarded the end when you removed all the screws as it would have been great to know exactly where the rest of the screws are located). Overall, awesome video. Thank you so much for taking the time to record it and for sharing it with us. Much appreciated!
@@friendlymechanic9778 How many hours did you work to remove and install the dashboard. i mean the time without the leather work. thanks in advance and greetings from the Austria Alps!
Would you consider doing another one if I bring the car to you? The video is thorough but a little intimidating for me to do it myself. I'll pay fairly🙂
@friendlymechanic9778 I understand... Thanks. Is there anyway to elaborate a little on the airbag removal? Will I be pushing in and out, or front to back?
It’s pushing in on a spring. This is very difficult if it’s your first time since it’s all by feel. Just be very careful if attempting this these airbags aren’t cheap.
This video was extremely informational and exactly what I was looking for. My 2016 750i head unit went bad and my goal is to do the job my self. You seem to know everything about these cars and I was wondering if you think there’s anything else I should know before taking on this job?
Okay nice, when removing the frame. Detach the connector from the BDC, you don’t need to remove all the wiring from the frame. Let me know if you need some guidance on that.
Hello Thank you for the video, I have the same problem with my car. My question is about the heads-up display, is there anything special that needs to be done to remove that. I didn't see anything on your video about that, Anyway, thanks again. I'm going to take the time to get this done as well.
Nothing special with the heads up display. If all you are going to do is remove the dash to get the leather fixed you actually don’t need to disconnect or remove it.
Excellent video. Very thorough explanation with great close up video. I have the merino leather dash in my 2021 X5M. Is the peeling leather a thing I'll have to look forward to if I keep the car long enough?
If it is exposed to direct sunlight for long periods or time it can happen. There are things you can do to help prevent it. Park in a garage when possible. If you park in direct sunlight using a sun deflector on the windshield will help. Don’t use any chemicals or armor all wipes on the dash. Just a microfiber cloth and water to clean. I would also keep a close eye on the leather while your X5 is in warranty. At the first sign of any peeling take it in to have it taken care of.
Trying to look for a junkyard where I can find a 2016 BMW 750ix complete dash. Do you have any recommendations? I do not want to buy a new one one that come from wrecked one will work as long as the dash is in good condition
Hmmm that may be hard to find. It would have to be one with all the same features and not to mention the condition of the one find might not be great. If you’re willing to remove two dashes. I would consider just removing yours and finding an upholstery shop to re-new the leather. That way it will last longer.
I don’t have a shop unfortunately maybe in the future that could be a possibility. But I will say it only needs to be worth it to you. It’s your car and you look at it everyday, if the cost to get it fixed works for you I would say go for it.
This G12 only had one battery, it was not equipped with an auxiliary battery. I did disconnect the battery. It is safer to do so since I was working the airbag system.
The expansion valve is located in the engine bay at the firewall. The Ac line should line up with the expansion valve easily. If you can’t aim it. Remove the center E4 stud that holds the 10mm and that should make things easier.
@@friendlymechanic9778 can u tell me if line is bolted in somewhere on the bottom cause it feels like if I had more wiggle room I can get it back on...(I replaced evap core).... so trying to put it all back together.... ur video on the dash was very helpful 👌
If you’re talking about the AC line needing more wiggle room then yes towards the bottom under the DME there are clips and fasteners that can be removed to give more wiggle room. It’s a lot of work. I have a video on the 7 series playlist removing the upper coolant hose. You can skip ahead to the part where I remove the DME and see if that is the space you’re looking for to give more wiggle room. Feel free to send me photos on instagram to better see what you are dealing with.
@@friendlymechanic9778 Thanks for your help and when I removed the DME i was able to get AC lines to move freely and connect to the expansion valve easly.... but now that I have it all button up the car will not start ... seems like it is not getting fuel but i checked and it is so it is not firing ... could that have anything to do with removing the DME?
I would make sure every connector is properly snapped into place and secure. Nothing loose. Is the car completely dead or does something turn on? Lights on the dash?
Great Video! My 7 series has the same issue. Do you have contact information? I see others have commented and are interested in getting you to fix similar issues, however you state that you don't have a shop. I am perplexed, within the video, you mentioned the owner had saved a significant owner of money for the dash replacement of only $500. This would lead me to believe you offer your services for others. I thought of another possibility is to remove the windshield and apply adhesive to the leather. What are your thoughts? I appreciate if you can provide further contact info i.e email, etc.. Thank you for taking the time to read my comment.
Best way to contact me is through RUclips comments or instagram for private messages. The owner did save money having me do the work but the cars I post videos on are family and close friends. I do my work on my driveway and can only work on one car at a time. I would love to be able to help as many people as possible but I just don’t have space for it. I wouldn’t recommend removing the windshield and applying adhesive as the leather shrinks and becomes stiff. It’s hard to move around and form it back to its original place. I’m not sure how bad yours is but the car I worked on this was absolutely not an option and a complete leather replacement was the only option.
You know it's a bmw thing when you have to start in the backseat to remove the dash ;0.. thx for another great video.
😂 i never actually thought about that. Good point.
