Hot Shot & Calf Working - Part 2

- I feel like I needed to put the hot shot in the title and/or thumbnail since most of the video that's what I'm holding in my hand which allows me to do a better job of forcing the calves up the alley. It would be a VERY long day if it wasn't for this handy tool.
I felt like I needed a small segment to tell people how I'm not constantly zapping these calves and how it's only used as a last resort when they won't push forward. It is a very short zap.
Anyways, here is part 2 of the Cow Sorting a Calf Working. What makes these working pens difficult is you can't narrow or widen the alley. It's built to a set width that is wide enough for cow to move through and that means wide enough for calves to turn around. That's where the hot shot really helps in this situation.

I know this is an older video I just started watching our videos on you tube. Growing up on a farm i loved watching the cows. My dad and his boss rounding them all up, tagging their ears and everything. I'm from Illinois, my cousin in Tennessee hit me with a hot stick when I was younger. All can say is I love my cousin, and a hot stick will make you jump! HaHa
Good to see someone not overusing the tool. It’s a necessity but some people get carried away.
I think he's on the button a little more than he thinks he is. You can hear it the motor running even when he's using scare sounds. Over all, no he's not on it all the time. He's a lot nicer with it than most would be. I know the sound, I have one.
Not a necessity. Especially not if you have a well-trained dog. I've been to dairy farms that rely on a shock stick to get everything done, and even without one in your hand, the cows start stressing whenever you look at them, like you're coming to get them. Definitely not the low-stress or humane way to go.

Another great video Farm guy. With those calves being different sizes do you keep the bulls with the cows year round or is the smaller calves late calves? Don't you just hate it when a calf turns around in the lane? That can be so aggravating. Good job bud.
Dwight Harber yes, that’s correct. The right way would be to pull the bulls off but at this place we tend to keep the bulls on them year round and when it comes time to wean, if a calf is too small it will just stay till the next go around.
My family grows cotton and raise angus cattle. It’s a lot of work, but it’s rewarding when things go good. It’s stressful though, always worried about the weather. Worried there’s no rain, then worrying it’s raining to much. We had a cow give birth in the creek this year. Found the calf it had drowned. Knew something was wrong cause the mamma had come to the gate raising all kinds of hell.

Do you have a video of the charolais bull you use? Reason being your charolais cross calves look a bit plainer than charolais cross calves we have in ireland
matthewdfk I might have a video with some of them in it but not really one featuring just the Charolais bulls. Wish I did. Hmmm like they look more Charolais than cross vs what you have over there in Ireland?

matthewdfk sorry just saw your replies. For some reason it didn’t tag me and notify me but yeah those are some dang good looking bulls. Show bulls at that, gotta remember it’s the cows too. We don’t turn show bulls and cows out on rough pasture like this though!

We are looking into getting one because we have a aggressive Brangus show heifer. She is good when she is on the halter, but if she is free it’s game on! Would you recommend this for aggressive cattle?
I wouldn’t recommend it for a show heifer. It’s mainly to move them along in situations where you need it. I think it would only make her more feisty instead of a gold behavioral thing.

@@TheFarmGuy We are trying to figure things out with her she is a really good cow when she wants to be. It’s almost like she is bipolar, but this pregnant momma needs to stop jumping fences every time she gets a wild hair up her butt!

I was reading through the comments, and the guy that said you shouldn't use it and wanted to argue his point....well, sometimes you need a tool to get the job done. Don't have cattle, in fact I AM a vegan, but I have 7 big dogs and I own a Hot Shot just in case I gotta break up a fight, which Seldom happens, but if it does, I won't be getting bit in the finger again. I used it last time there was an attitude problem btwn dogs(one likes to be a B*). Barely touched her w it and haven't had a problem since. Sometimes I carry it around as a 🧐👉🐕reminder...she remembers🤔

Nice! They do have their spot and I 100% agree that they should not be overused and/or abused but there’s no doubt the tool can be used for a purpose.

Just worked black angus today first time ever working cattle and I wish I had a hotshot. The sorting sticks even with a couple pretty hard whacks still didn’t motivate the pissed off moms when we were trying to run them up the shoot. I have a ton of respect for guys that work cattle on a regular basis.

For me and my cattle, I don't use a hot shot... It just makes them harder to get into the pen and into the squeeze chute.. Just my thoughts lol

@@TheFarmGuy I know that some people do and I have worked with them, and have been kicked and ran over.... I just can't bring myself to use one. I don't know if that is a bad thing or not? But I can't have my dad or brother being run over.
Moonlight X Fox we don’t use them to get kicked or ran over lol. We use them to speed up the process and move them where we want. Sometimes you run into a stubborn bull or something that just won’t go on a trailer but once the hot shot comes in to play, he will move.

@@TheFarmGuy i think the true power is in your raspberry blowing abilities. Man, having worked an office all my life I could get behind a day of annoying cows with fart sounds.
Never seen this method used on Dr Pol on animal planet and he does a lot of pregnancy checks. This looks just cruel. They are so conditioned to fear that thing, that they are jumping on each other. What kind of dog do you think you'd have if you used that on him. He would be deathly afraid of you. That is physical and psychological abuse of an animal.
That's the whole of animal farming in general.
Not saying your wrong in how your handling your heard, but there is an easier way...
We gave up on shock sticks about 15 years ago. Never use them anymore. Don't need to. Tried them and got same results as you. Forcing cattle into places that they are not comfortable going into is the problem. Its all about handling. And training...
Work your cattle. Run them through the chutes but don't do anything to them. Just hold each one for a minute or two before releasing. Work them often with no trauma and they will follow you anywhere.
They are a herd animal. They always follow their leader. If you lead them, they will follow. You can take them anywhere, different pasture, into the trailer, to slaughter. They don't know but they will follow you if you train them, it just takes time and effort on your part. Less stress on the animal and less work on your part. Win win.
Colorado Mike I sort of agree but the time and effort that would go into that would be tremendous. We got this crew all sorted and worked within 4 hours the other day. We only lot these cattle here twice a year.
I generally do not leave negative comments, but since cattle farming is how I make my living I felt the need to do so. This is what gives cattle producers a bad name. I handle cattle all the time. I realize that you are not zapping them every time you touch one of them with the "hot shot". I do not own a "hot shot". You need to learn some basic cattle handling skills.
Marc Kimbrell tell me exactly how it gives cattle producers a bad name? What’s the bad part? I think every cattle producer should own a “hot shot.” Even the ones that have gentle cattle. For example, if you have a trailer load full of cows and one of them gets down and can’t get up, the hot shot comes in very handy to “make” that cow get up and could save her life. Many more examples I could say but I generally don’t like to get involved in the back and forth argumentative comments but when one tells me I need to learn basic cattle handling skills, I must do so. I can only imagine how much longer this job would have taken if it weren’t for the hot shot.
Quicker job means less stress on both parties and out of the near 100° heat index.
@@TheFarmGuy You should try watching the news. You should also look up Ron Gill from Texas A & M, cattle handling expert. With just "good" cattle handling skills the job would have gone faster.
Marc Kimbrell guess I’m watching the wrong news. Trust me, I’d much rather do it without the need of the hotshot but I’d wear myself out trying to push them up to the chute without one. You still haven’t explained which part of my cattle handling skills were bad or what was done wrong.

Pretty crazy to call someone out to tell them they’re bad at something and can’t advise them on what’s wrong or what they should do different.
Take some advice from a guy whose future wife asked what a shocker was - I showed her. Still paying for it 39 years later.😎😎😎
